College?

High school is coming to a rapid end, which means college is right around the corner for many seniors. However, for some students, graduation is a temporary, or permanent, end of their academic journey.

Earlier this month, many students declared where they’d be spending the next four years, however, there are others who do not have the intention of going to college. In today’s society, the value, and necessity, of education is considered extremely critical, which brings to question: What are the benefits of not going college, or taking a gap year?

The first obvious reason for not attending college is finance. Collegeraptor.com states that “Studies show that attendance of a private four-year college could cost up to $46,000, and the cost of attendance for a public four year could potentially cost up to 36 thousand.” It is no secret that college is expensive, and student debt can have a greater negative impact on your future then not having a degree. Also, “student debt is at an all-time high, higher than credit card debt” according to pbs.org. The financial burden and potential harm to your future finances, in terms of student debt, is a risk that students attending college must face. In addition to debt, the chances of finding a job post-graduation have decreased. According to an article on the University of Washington’s website, “approximately 50% of college students are unemployed or working in a position which does not require a degree.”

The college system seem to have become a system built to cheat students out of money: requiring young adults to take out large loans, that they are then later not able to pay off. The financial burden of college needs to be carefully examined, however, students who aren’t attending college, are relieved of this burden, which is a primary and major reason as to why to not attend college.

Another reason why students aren’t attending college is preparation. The lack of preparation, within the current education system, for the future evident. For Abdullaziz Munye, a current senior at Highland, preparation is a key factor in his decision to join the workforce. “The problem is that students are taught to work with their hands in school.”

Abdulaziz plans on working as an apprentice carpenter this fall. “I do plan on going to school in the future, however, as of right now, I want to chase my passion in carpentering.”

Abdullaziz continues to discuss the reason in which he came to his decision, along with the stigma that is placed on students who choose not to attend college. The argument is that college does not prepare us any more than high school does, although college provides us with a lot more spare time than high school. The majority of this spare time will be spent in libraries studying.

The constraints that college puts on building ourselves rather than becoming “corporate clones” are obvious. Students are going to college just to be able to add something on to their resume and find a job, but where is the passion? Why are we told that we will find ourselves during our college years if there isn’t any real chance of growth and development, and instead a rather high chance of having more student loans than job offers.

In an article for the Huffington Post, Michael Price writes “Spending 4+ years pursuing a college education in this day and age when the world is changing at the speed of light is not only silly, it’s absolute insanity! Since I dropped out of college and started my career half a decade before my peers, I’m 5 years ahead of the game, plus I have zero debt. No student loans for me.”

College has always been pressured as a necessity, however, it’s obvious in our day and age, that many people can be successful without a degree. Along with the fact that the college environment isn’t built for everyone. The concept of college is particular to each person, and some people want or need to go to college in order to pursue their dream. However, college shouldn’t be viewed as the only way to achieve success.

Senior Vs. Staff basketball game

The Senior vs. Staff basketball game took action on Friday, May 18th. This game was a way to keep the seniors and teachers blood flowing as we close off this school year! The game took place during 7th hour & before the game started, the senior side in the stands filled at a rapid rate. The seniors were guaranteed to win the basketball game to show the staff who’s boss and that’s what ended up happening.

Highland Park Senior High hosts an event called the Senior vs. Staff basketball game every year. It’s a moment for the students to show the staff who’s in charge and for the staff to show the seniors what they’re made of. With the help of the Senior Class Council, they helped organize the whole game. Each half was 16 minutes. There are a total of six teams with 5 people per team. Every few minutes there would be a rotation so everyone would be able to participate.

Since there were rotations, everyone had the opportunity to show what they could do, and to prove that the seniors rule the school.

After the first half ended, the Senior Class Council introduced a halftime shooting game that lasted 3 minutes. One team was on the left side of the court while the other was on the right. Each team consisted of six people and the team with the most points at the end of the 3 minutes would win. So, the Senior Class Council took some initiative and picked 6 random people from the stands, and as an audience we all sat back and cheered for everyone. People got some water and were ready to be put back in the game.

Some of the things people liked about the game were the different skills some of the players carried. People even admitted that the staff had skills too, and were surprised when some of the seniors were getting crossed.

With all the hard work each and every player put in, the game ended with the staff winning: 59 to 58. We asked one of the staff what they thought about the game and one replied with, “I think the scoreboard is cheating, we scored more points than that.”

This is one of the events people get excited for because it’s exhilarating to watch and it’s always fun to cheer for your favorite player. Although no team gets bragging rights, this game was a close one and everybody’s a winner. #ClassOf’18

‘How to Hang a Witch’ review

How to Hang a Witch is a fantasy book that is also connected to the real life history of the Salem witch trials. The main character, Samantha Mather, or Sam as she likes to be called, moves to Salem with her stepmother Vivian. Her father is in the hospital, in a coma, but no one knows what caused him to be in a coma.

Sam is descended from Cotton Mather who started the Salem witch trials, and is surprised when she meets “The Descendantswho are also connected to the trials, since their ancestors were of the accused witches. The Descendants are named Alice, Mary, and Susannah and they don’t like her at all, they even glare at her when they are in class.

In the book, Samantha deals with a curse that has killed members of both the witches families and her own family. In order to stop, and break the curse, she needs to figure out how it all started.

When she is looking around, she meets a classically  handsome looking boy who turns out to be the ghost of a boy who recently inhabited the house. Sam finds out that the ghost’s name is Elijah, and that he has a big connection to the curse that afflicts her and The Descendants.

The troubles start when it’s Sam’s first week in school, and she decides to offer pastries to her classmates to try and make new friends, just like her stepmother wanted. The class ends up getting sick and they blame her and her pastries, causing both the class and The Descendants to dislike her. This then leads the others to put Sam on the lists of suspects for all of the deaths going on. Sam later learns secrets about her past and even about close friends and family of hers that relate to her fate and the fate of  her father’s coma.

The author, Adriana Mather, is a real descendant of Cotton Mather who, like in the book, started the witch trials. She also descends from people who boarded and survived the Titanic. Adriana Mather usually uses her familie’s history in her writing; letting other people see through the eyes of her family to get a glimpse of their lives. Adriana Mather also has a second book, much like How To Hang A Witch. This second book of hers, has the same characters but has the plot of Sam being connected to the Titanic.

58 dead in border protests after US embassy in Israel relocated to Jerusalem

On Monday, May 14, according to Vox, Gaza had its bloodiest day since the 2014 war. In total, 58 Palestinians were killed, and over 1,200 were injured, by Israeli forces, at the border, during protests after American President Donald Trump’s relocation of the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The violence is a continuation of the 51-year-old conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians, in the region, over territory, immigration and related issues. Both groups want control of Jerusalem, with the Palestinians specifically wanting East Jerusalem, to be the capital of their future state. The Palestinians oppose the blockade on the border of Israel and want Palestinians to be able to return to Jerusalem, their homeland, which contains many monuments sacred to both groups. Throughout the conflict, the United States has been a staunch supporter of Israel and its control of Jerusalem. Israel, the United States, and the United Nations recognize Hamas, the current governing body of the Palestinian territory Gaza, as a terrorist organization.

The Guardian reported that President Trump first announced plans to relocate the embassy to Jerusalem in a short speech delivered last December, where he also recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He stated, “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.” Officials then claimed the transition would take at least three years, so it came as a shock to the international community when it took fewer than six months.

Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and his promise to move the embassy, were highly controversial, being widely condemned by US Allies including the UK and by Palestine and other Islamic states. The Israeli government, however, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called Monday a “glorious day,” praised Trump when he made the recognition and promise, and in May when he acted upon it. At the opening ceremony of the new embassy in Jerusalem, Washington ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, stated, optimistically, “Today’s historic event is attributed to the vision, courage, and moral clarity of one person to whom we owe an enormous and eternal debt of gratitude: President Donald J Trump” according to The New York Times.

The mood at the border was more chaotic, to say the least. The Guardian reports that protestors lit tires on fire to create “smoke screens” against Israeli snipers. They then rushed the fence, though none made it through, according to the Israeli military, which claimed, “The rioters are hurling firebombs and explosive devices towards the security fence and IDF forces, and are burning tires, throwing rocks and launching flaming objects in order to ignite fires in Israeli territory and harm IDF troops.” Hamas has encouraged and funded protests, and actively encouraged protestors at the border on May 14 to rush the fence over a loudspeaker. The violence raised the death toll of the recent protests to over 100.

Many have criticized Israel for their violent response to the protests. According to Real Clear Politics, Amnesty International called Israel’s actions “horrific” while senator Bernie Sanders said, “Instead of applauding Israel for its actions, Israel should be condemned. Israel has a right to security, but shooting unarmed protesters is not what it is about.” The White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah, however, only blamed Hamas saying, “We believe Hamas is responsible for these tragic deaths,” he told reporters. “Their rather cynical exploitation of the situation is what’s leading to these deaths and we want it stopped.”

With President Trump’s recent withdrawal of the United States from the Iran deal and now this, tensions are mounting in the Middle East. As Vox points out, Trump’s transference of the US embassy basically takes the idea of a Palestinian state off the table. Peace in the Middle East, the espoused goal of both Hamas and the Israeli government, seems far off.

Summer jobs for teens

By Piper Gallivan, Alivia Arredondo, and Alani Bayon

Summer is right around the corner, and if you want money to spend you’re going to need a job because you can’t rely on your parent’s money forever. A summer job is a great thing to have to teach responsibility, and to get money. Many people have the problem of finding where to work, or what to do, or finding a place that will hire them, so we hope to help you on your search for summer jobs with our ideas.

Lifeguard

Lifeguarding is a great summer job to have for many reasons. For example, your employers understand that you are (in most cases) also a student, so you are not required to work during the school year if you don’t want to, and you won’t be penalized for deciding not to work during the school year. Also, unlike some jobs, where you are required to be 16 or older, you can apply to be a lifeguard at only 15, however, you must be certified and have completed the lifeguard training class.

Lifeguarding is a serious job and you must be prepared to take on the responsibilities of being a lifeguard, but along with that comes the fun of being a lifeguard. Working for the city of St. Paul, lifeguards make between $11-$12 an hour, and depending on how many hours you work, you get a raise after a certain period of time.

Also, the lifeguard community is a good group because most everyone are friends, making it more likely you will enjoy the people you work with.

You are not only required to be a lifeguard, in fact you don’t even have to patrol the pool, being a lifeguard gives you other options for a job. For example, you can teach swim lessons, or a water aerobics class, and many more! Not only are these things fun, but they also pay better and require less hours. If you’re looking for an outside job where you can get a tan and go in the water lifeguarding is the way to go.

Nanny/Babysitter

Being a nanny (fancy way to say baby sitter) for the summer is a great and easy way to earn some money. During the summer, many parents don’t want to have to pay the fee to send their kids to daycare or summer camps while they are at work, so nannies are in high demand during the summer. Not only do you get paid well (especially if the family lives on Summit), but it can be a fun and easy job.

Often, you will make a connection with the kids, and get to do fun things with them as well. Although being a nanny is a big responsibility, it does have its perks. There is no age requirement and no taxes like with other jobs. Also, if you have access to a car, or a city bus, you can take the kids and yourself to do fun things like going to the mall, or zoo, or water park, etc. Becoming a nanny would be a great, easy, flexible job for any teen to have this summer.

Camp Counselor

Being a camp counselor is one of the many ways to earn money while having fun. Many kids go to camp every year and depending on the amount of kids they will need a counselor. There are many camps for many activities; for example, if you are into being out in the water Camp St. Croix is perfect, and if you enjoy farming and gardening Youth Farm is a perfect fit for you.

For this job, you must be very patient. Depending on your age group, little kids may take some time to do things, or understand things. You will also need to be responsible; you’re with a lot of kids and you must keep them safe. This is a great job for people who need money while having fun and improving their communication abilities.

Sports Coach

Being a coach over the summer is a great experience. If you are really involved in a sport this job is perfect for you. It’s even possible that you can get a workout at the same time. During the summer, a lot of people slack on their workout, or don’t even do one, but with this job it has you covered. You could teach any sport, it could be: baseball, soccer, basketball, gymnastics, or dance. Typically, if you’re a teen getting this job you will be working with little kids. Just like with the camp counseling job, you will need to be patient; not all people are born with a natural talent. A lot of people find this job very enjoyable because you get to do something you love.

Ice Cream Shop

There are many ice cream places around St. Paul that hire year round, and summer only, for teens. Many have the minimum age limit of 14, so they are one of the most accessible jobs for teens. Some of the most popular ones near the Highland area are Nelson’s, Grand Ole Creamery, Izzy’s, and Cold Front. They are all currently hiring St. Paul teens for May-September, and in some cases you can continue into the school year.

For these jobs, you will need to be available 7 days a week, morning through night, and not have any extended time periods off. They are looking for people with good customer service skills, the ability to work with all kinds of people, and the ability to handle money. Everyone loves ice cream, so why not work with it and get some for free? If you are interested, check their website or stop in and ask for an application.

State Fair

The Minnesota State Fair is a great way to spend your summer at Minnesota’s greatest event of the year. The technical age for working is 16, but if you apply individually with a vendor, they may hire younger people too. To apply, you have to complete a cover letter and resume, and then have a meeting in the registration office where you will be interviewed and led in the direction of jobs suitable for you.

You need to be available to work all 12 days of the fair, and during consistent times available. The specific skills required depend on the job, and there are many options. There are hundreds of food vendors, some in full restaurants, and some in just stands on the street. Some of the most recognizable vendors that hire teens are Sweet Martha’s and the Pronto Pup stand. The fair will start taking applications on June 16th, so get your resumes ready!!

Summer is a great time to get money before the stress of school comes back. The Twin Cities’ have a lot of great opportunities for jobs that are designated for teenagers, and many of them are really fun! Most places are hiring right now, so go get to applying!!

St. Croix Section 3AA Tru Team and Harding Relay Meet

By: Tray Garner and Mason Ferguson

Track Meet @ Saint Croix Lutheran Sections 3AA Tru Team

It was the section 3AA @ St. Croix meet, and the schools that attended were: St. Paul Johnson, Simley, St. Thomas Academy, South St. Paul, Hill-Murray, St. Paul Washington, Minneapolis Roosevelt, St. Paul Como, St. Croix Lutheran, and St. Paul Highland. It was a limited meet. There were only 2 people per event. The top 2 fastest runners, jumpers, throwers from each team were the ones who participated. The team with the most points, at the end of the meet, was going to state.

The Highland boy’s team almost came over on top. It was down to the last 3 events, and the Highland boys were in the lead, the St. Croix boys were in 2nd place, and the St. Thomas boys were in 3rd place.

In the last 3 events, Highland came in 3rd or 4th place, and St. Croix Lutheran took the lead by 24 points, and during the last event, St. Thomas also got in front of Highland, so that put the boys in 3rd place overall.

Relay meet @ Harding High School

The schools that attended this meet were: Highland, Harding, Central, Johnson, Washington, Cretin-Derham Hall, Humboldt, and Como. The Highland Park boy’s team was in first place.

The Highland park boy’s 4x100m dash first leg fell, and dropped the baton, handing it off to the 2nd leg. Highland was in last place, but ended the race in 3rd place.

The boys 4×100 relay team said that they were going to make it up in the 4x200m dash.

The 4×200 teams were with Central, Como, Harding, Johnson, Humboldt, Cretin, and Washington. The Highland boys made a comeback in the 4x200m relay by coming in first place over every team.

School hours

I personally think school hours should start around 8:30am. Often, when school starts earlier, the students tend to still be tired, and even may cause you to be sleep deprived. Being sleep deprived can be the cause for anxiety, depression, mood swings, eating disorders etc., which could lead to serious problems.

Being tired can make you less focused, which impacts your learning, and memory. People often are cranky when they’re tired, which could cause them to talk bad to a teacher or start problems with others. That causes disruptiveness in classrooms, and disturbs others learning.

When school starts at 7:30am, students that live further away from school have to wake up at 6:00am to get ready. A lot of the times, it’s still dark out at 6:00am, and walking to a bus stop when it’s still dark out could be dangerous.

Another example of why I think school should start at 8:30am is because teenagers usually need at least nine hours of sleep, so if they were to get up at 6:00am that would mean they would have to go to sleep at 9:00pm. Often, in high school, students have part time jobs in the afternoons, and some jobs tend to close at 10:00pm. However if it were to start around 8:30am students would be able to go to sleep at 10:00pm and not be as tired the next day for school.

The last reason I have for school starting later is because I think fewer people would miss the bus by sleeping in. Many kids arrive to school late because they’ve missed their bus. Students missing their bus can often mean they miss a class, or sometimes even a school day because they don’t have a ride. Overall, I think school starting at 8:30am would be best for students, and even the school staff.

The Senior Send-Off

The Senior Send-Off is an event that Highland Park Senior High School does every single year. This event takes place a week before the school year ends. This year’s send-off will be on, June 1st, during second period, in the gym.

During the send-off, the school shows a slide show of seniors, with pictures from their 4 years at school, and they also have a video where they have underclassmen give a goodbye speech to their senior siblings.

On the day of the send-off, the seniors also wear their senior class shirts, and they say goodbye to teachers and friends.

So, I decided to ask some students how they felt about the Senior Send-Off:

The first person I talked to was Brendan Vellenga, a senior, who explained, “I am going to miss both the soccer and tennis team, and also a select number of teachers.”

The second person I talked to was a junior who has a sister in the senior class, he told me that, “I am going to miss her because she was like counselor in school. She was also fun working with, and hope she has a great year in college.”

The third student I talked to was a senior name Sunthany Vang, who explained, “I am grateful for everyone who was there for me from freshman year till now, and teachers that made me learn a lot of stuff.” It was a long journey but she is happy that she is finally done with high school.

The fourth person I interviewed was Tsion Boke, who’s best friend is also a senior. She told me, “She has been my best friend from middle school and she has always help me with my school work, especially math, and she had always have my back. Now she leaving school I am going to miss her and I wish her the best of luck in college.”

After all my interviews, I came to realize that all these seniors have done different things for the school and their friends, in different kinds of ways, and I hope they have a good time in college.

Avengers: Infinity War review

Many people loved the beginning aspect of Infinity War; how it instantly introduces the antagonist of the entire movie at the start. This movie was so exciting that many people all over the world started to pre-order tickets almost a month before its actual release. Surprisingly, the directors of Avengers: Infinity War, Joe and Anthony Russo, had moved the release date from May 27th, to April 27th. This influenced many people that were already planning to go watch it, get the chance to watch it early.

The main antagonist is known as, Thanos (played/voiced by Josh Brolin), and he drives the main plot in the movie. This movie introduces an enemy to the Avengers that they have never faced before, and they are going to face hardships. Many characters in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) have grown accustomed to their role in the movies and are fan favorites.

Avengers: Infinity War, the third installment of Marvel’s Avengers series, and has been a blockbuster hit! After only a day of its release, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War had made over $10 million. Surprisingly enough, Infinity War had become the number one movie in the world, making, in total, over $600 million world-wide.

The total cost of making Infinity War was said to be around $300 – 400 million, which is said to make it the most expensive movie in the world. Because Marvel is now owned by Disney, Disney’s creative influence has been increased since they own both the Star Wars franchise and Marvel Studios. According to a box office website, Marvel stock had been down 2.8%, but after Infinity War it was raised to 3.2%. This demonstrates the amount of influence these movies have, in the way people all over the world show interest in movies that portray their childhood, or something they wished to see.

Personally, I loved the movie. I had watched the first movie, created by Marvel back in 2008, which was Iron Man. I loved the comics of Marvel and DC; they influenced my childhood, and to see people bring those characters, those ideas into a cinematic portal I personally love it.

The beginning of the movie was just shocking; to just see Thanos and the Black Order, overthrowing Thor and the Asgardians, that scene is forever engraved in my mind. The emotions put into that scene affected many fans, seeing important characters being killed off so easily and readily throughout the story amazed me.

The entirety of Thanos just made chills run down my spine, they made him as cool as he could be, the way John Brolin portrayed Thanos made me think of his voice when I would read the comics.

Even in the end of the movie, I personally didn’t think that the Russo brothers would make Thanos collect all six Infinity Stones in the first movie.

Overall, I’d give this movie a 9/10 rating. I wanted there to be more of an explanation to certain scenes, like the Red Skull, or the Soul Stone, all these pieces have little explaination behind them. I wanted more, but honestly this movie makes me think who is the bad guys, and who are the good guys, and makes me think of what the next Avengers movie will be.

Kanye West

According to The Hill’s article about Kanye West, West thinks that Africans that were brought to America as slaves were given a “choice” to become slaves. Kanye West was seen with President Trump and many people thought that he got his slavery comment from Trump. He created a controversy in the black community. He might have done this because he loves getting attention. On Wednesday, April 25, West tweeted “You don’t have to agree with trump but the mob can’t make me not love him.” Kanye lost millions of followers for tweeting positive things about Trump.

West was seen wearing a Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hat, and posted a picture on Twitter. He also made a statement that said, “Slavery was a choice.” This angered a lot of people to the point where his own wife called him out on Twitter to stop the nonsense. His friend, John Legend, reached out to him and told him that “Abraham Lincoln freed slaves and also helped them, and that he was Republican. And that Republicans were the ones who helped a black people back then.” And he ended the text with “Not trying to manipulate your freethought; Trying to inform you!” West tweeted a screenshot of the messages, and many people said that Legend genuinely was just trying to inform him and his fans on how the topic of slavery is really sensitive to many people. People thought it was low of West to post a private conversation with his friend on Twitter.

Many celebrities that idealized Kanye for his music and personality were very disappointed and hurt by his comments. According to a Nicki Swift article, singer Will.i.am said, “And when you’re a slave, you’re owned,” he said. “You don’t choose if you’re owned… That statement is one of the most ignorant statement that anybody who came from the hood could ever say about their ancestors, that slavery is a choice”. Will.i.am reacted to Kanye’s comment because his great-great-grandmother was a slave. He believed that slavery wasn’t a choice, and Kanye was wrong to say that it was. Another celebrity that spoke about Kanye’s comment was the singer Eve. She said, “You want to be a free thinker, you want to be thought provoking, you cannot have these ideas without facts to back them up. Slavery is a fact. Slavery is part of our history… We are still feeling the effects of slavery within our community, within our culture. It hurts me”. Eve spoke about how slavery still affects the black community to this day, and couldn’t have been a choice.

Kanye West doesn’t know that the comments he made on slavery, and supporting Trump, caused him his followers on Twitter, and hurt his career. He just thought he was expressing his opinion, which he was but, it caused really bad tension between him and the black community because what he said was not true. Also, many African Americans saw him as a role model, so for them to hear Kanye say those comments really hurt them.
