Recap on the Met Gala

The Met Gala as always, left us shooked as celebrities served looks that we weren’t prepared for. This has undoubtedly been a year to remember, as many celebs walked the red carpet in stunning outfits. The theme of this years Met Gala was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Let’s just take a trip back and relive some of the most beautiful outfits that walked the carpet this year.

Without a doubt, you can always count on Rihanna to faithfully execute any Met Gala; she really hit the crowd with a thunderbolt as she went matched the theme and as always looked fierce and sexy. She wore Maison Margiela by John Galliano, however, the highlight of this extravagant piece is definitely the Vatican papal tiara, which was studded with 18,000 diamonds. Rihanna came to shut the show down, which she did effortlessly.

WOW! The Versace dress with detailed sequins and metal work shoulders and arms left everyone amazed. Zendaya resembled the Catholic Saint, Joan of Arc. The beautiful metal dress compliments not only her golden complexion but also her dark red hair and strong smoky makeup. Altogether, Zendaya walked the carpet in high fashion and with one of the most literal outfits of the night.

It is no surprise that Solange came to shut the show down. Wearing an Iris Van Herpen dress, complemented with a bottle of communion wine. The doo-rag and the halo were what really shut the Internet down. Doo-rags have become a cultural phenomenon, which was what really shocked the crowd with this look.

Cardi B

Nothing says “heavenly body” more than a pregnant woman. Cardi B wore a pearl and jewel-studded gown designed by Moschino. The look was accompanied by a separate tailpiece, and one of the best headpieces seen all night.

Lena Writhe

Lena came to the Met to literally make a statement. A sophisticated look, but outrageously stunning. Wearing a black and white suit, paired with a bright LGBT flag. This is just yet another look that will be remembered for ages. We could all take a page from Lena Writhe’s book, next time you want to make a statement, you should wear it!

Although there were plenty of other amazing looks, these are just a few of the celebrities who deliberately came to shut the show down, and also matched the theme of this year’s Met Gala exactly, except Lena Writhe of course, who clearly deserves her own Met Gala theme.

Young male thinking, looking at blackboard – Just add your text

High school is coming to a rapid end, which means college is right around the corner for many seniors. However, for some students, graduation is a temporary, or permanent, end of their academic journey.

Earlier this month, many students declared where they’d be spending the next four years, however, there are others who do not have the intention of going to college. In today’s society, the value, and necessity, of education is considered extremely critical, which brings to question: What are the benefits of not going college, or taking a gap year?

The first obvious reason for not attending college is finance. states that “Studies show that attendance of a private four-year college could cost up to $46,000, and the cost of attendance for a public four year could potentially cost up to 36 thousand.” It is no secret that college is expensive, and student debt can have a greater negative impact on your future then not having a degree. Also, “student debt is at an all-time high, higher than credit card debt” according to The financial burden and potential harm to your future finances, in terms of student debt, is a risk that students attending college must face. In addition to debt, the chances of finding a job post-graduation have decreased. According to an article on the University of Washington’s website, “approximately 50% of college students are unemployed or working in a position which does not require a degree.”

The college system seem to have become a system built to cheat students out of money: requiring young adults to take out large loans, that they are then later not able to pay off. The financial burden of college needs to be carefully examined, however, students who aren’t attending college, are relieved of this burden, which is a primary and major reason as to why to not attend college.

Another reason why students aren’t attending college is preparation. The lack of preparation, within the current education system, for the future evident. For Abdullaziz Munye, a current senior at Highland, preparation is a key factor in his decision to join the workforce. “The problem is that students are taught to work with their hands in school.”

Abdulaziz plans on working as an apprentice carpenter this fall. “I do plan on going to school in the future, however, as of right now, I want to chase my passion in carpentering.”

Abdullaziz continues to discuss the reason in which he came to his decision, along with the stigma that is placed on students who choose not to attend college. The argument is that college does not prepare us any more than high school does, although college provides us with a lot more spare time than high school. The majority of this spare time will be spent in libraries studying.

The constraints that college puts on building ourselves rather than becoming “corporate clones” are obvious. Students are going to college just to be able to add something on to their resume and find a job, but where is the passion? Why are we told that we will find ourselves during our college years if there isn’t any real chance of growth and development, and instead a rather high chance of having more student loans than job offers.

In an article for the Huffington Post, Michael Price writes “Spending 4+ years pursuing a college education in this day and age when the world is changing at the speed of light is not only silly, it’s absolute insanity! Since I dropped out of college and started my career half a decade before my peers, I’m 5 years ahead of the game, plus I have zero debt. No student loans for me.”

College has always been pressured as a necessity, however, it’s obvious in our day and age, that many people can be successful without a degree. Along with the fact that the college environment isn’t built for everyone. The concept of college is particular to each person, and some people want or need to go to college in order to pursue their dream. However, college shouldn’t be viewed as the only way to achieve success.

The 4-1-1 on prom

Prom is right around the corner and everyone’s anxiety has surpassed capacity. Whether this is your first or second time going to prom, this article will: provide a few helpful tips you need to know for prom, hopefully ease your anxiety, and put some common misconceptions to rest.

First and foremost, comfortable shoes are a MUST!

This goes for everyone, but mainly the ladies. You’re going to be dancing a ton, and you don’t want to cramp your style and not be able to show off those moves. Wearing comfortable shoes is essential to prevent you from having a stressful and painful evening.

Eat before coming to prom

Make sure not to overstuff yourself, but do remember to eat before coming to the event. There is no open buffet. In terms of snacks, there will be cookies, cheese, crackers, and more snacks. You want to make sure that you aren’t overeating before you start dancing for hours, but you also don’t want to go hungry for the night.

Just have FUN!

Don’t stress out about getting everything right, prom is not a wedding. You don’t want to over plan and not have prom live up to your expectations. Try to enjoy the moment and not control it! Dance with your friends and eat a crazy amount of cheese!

It is perfectly fine to not have a date!

This goes back to over planning the perfect night with the perfect date. Truthfully, the majority of the people who have dates are already couples, therefore, you shouldn’t stress and just go with your friends! Going with a friend is not lame; it will only increase the amount of fun you will be having. Think of the prom pictures!

Common misconceptions of prom

Prom is nothing like the movies. First of all, in terms of prom king and queen, everyone has an equal chance of winning, everyone is Blair Waldorf and Nate Archibald. Highland uses a vote system, therefore, literally any senior could win.

Another misconception is that prom is all fancy slow dancing. FALSE! Prom is fun, full of excitement and no one is that uptight. It’s all about having fun and looking great.

All-in-all, don’t over stress about making prom the perfect night because you’ll forget that it is meant to be a night of fun with your friends!

On March 9th, police arrived at a home in Hayden Heights to discover the body of 18-year-old Eileen Viveros-Vargas. Officers had found Viveros-Vargas shot in the head and her unborn child had died with her as well. Viveros-Vargas was apparently five months pregnant at the time of her death.

Eileen’s boyfriend, Luis Isaac Chacon-Villeda, was arrested on suspicion of murder, as well as a charge of fifth-degree drug possession. Police had found several bags of marijuana, a handgun, as well as 2,000 dollars in cash in the bedroom that Eileen Vargas was found.

The family confirmed that the couple had been together for two years.

Luis Isaac Chacon-Villeda, with no previous criminal record, made his first court appearance on the drug charges. Chacon-Villeda had confessed to owning the marijuana, and .22 caliber handgun, that was found at the scene. He also admitted to dealing marijuana in his neighborhood.

Chacon-Villeda is being held at Ramsey County jail as police are further investigating the death of Viveros-Vargas, with another court hearing scheduled on March 27th.

Eileen Viveros-Vargas was a student at Highland Middle school, and was a former associate of many of our students.

“I met Eileen when we were in middle school; it was 7th or 8th grade. I remember her as an outgoing and caring person; she was nice to everyone,” said Aricela Rueda, a current senior. Although she did not keep in contact with Eileen after their transition to high school, she explained how shocked she was to hear about the tragedy of Eileen’s death, saying, “I couldn’t believe it, she was gone. What shocked me the most was finding out that her boyfriend could be responsible for it.”

The emotional and difficult response received from Aricela was not the only one. Many students took to social media to express their shock, over the death of Eileen Viveros-Vargas, over the last couple of days.

In an interview, Karla Alarcon, a current junior, and cousin to Eileen, in response to the news of Eileen’s death said, “I was very shocked, and I felt like it was a dream I would wake up from and it would be over, but soon realized it was not and it was like I had been stabbed in the heart.”

Best-looking Marvel actors and actresses

Movie theaters are being filled with, what seems like, a new Marvel movie every month, with Deadpool 2, The Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and The Wasp, being released this year.

This is also shown in her personal life as she is an activist, and has founded a non-profit organization called Love Our Girls. (image taken from: wiki/Robert_Downey,_Jr.)

In a TMZ article, Robert Downey Jr.’s looks were put under a microscope to determine whether they were a result of money well spent or good genes. Either way, it’s undeniable that the 50-year-old actor steals the show with his great looks. This is another case of looks getting better with age. Speaking of age, Downey Jr. recently announced that he’ll soon be retiring from Iron Man. Fortunately, this won’t have an effect on how sexy he is, however, some of you Iron Man fans might be disappointed.

How to: Finish your senior year strong

The end of our last year of high school is slowly coming to an end. It’s no surprise that the majority of the seniors have been hit with a mild case of “senioritis.” After four long years, it’s definitely time to say goodbye to high school. Here are some simple steps you can follow to help you feel motivated to finish the year strong.

Step #1: Keep your eye on the prize

Picture yourself walking across the stage and receiving your diploma for your four years of hard work. Graduation is not far away, and for those excited for college, the gap is quickly shortening, but there is no need to panic. Whether your goal is graduation, college, or just summer, you need to keep your eye on the prize. The biggest challenge during senior year is finding motivation. By remembering what your goal is, and how soon you’ll be there, you’ll find the excitement and energy needed to complete the year strongly.

Step #2: Failure to plan, is planning to fail

Senior year is by far the most important year of high school; falling behind is not an option. Although, all four years are crucial toward your academic future, you want to make sure that you’re completing your senior year with strong grades rather than barely getting by. Also, make sure that you do not overcompensate, balancing out school with extracurriculars, and/or a job is extremely difficult, don’t bite off more than you can chew folks! The goal here is to be able to complete all your activities and school work, while still having enough time to yourself.

Step #3: Have fun

Reward yourself for working hard, attend events e.g. Prom, senior field trip, senior lock-in. Having events, or activities to look forward to, can help you pass the time between now and graduation. It can also motivate you to get through the days. It’s highly recommended that you not only attend these events, but also to make as many memories as you possibly can before we close this chapter in your life.

Step #4: Use your resources

Highland is filled with resources, and it’s your job to make sure that you are exploring all these opportunities while you still have time. Make sure to stay connected to your counselor, and stay informed on what you need in order to graduate. Also, while you’re busy staying connected to your advisors and teacher, make sure to stay connected to your peers as well, because they’re also living through this experience. You can use your peers as resources to help you with your school work; study dates are such an easy and fun way to spend time while learning.

Ultimately, it’s your senior year and you want to make sure you make the most of it. You’ve worked so hard for this, and you deserve it; continue to give yourself small rewards for overcoming the challenges throughout this year. For those seniors continuing to higher education, use this time to practice locking in those good habits and self-motivation. Get a jump start on better study habits or organization, because you’ll definitely need it for college.
