Girls fashion trends coming this Winter

By Charlotte Lane

Sweaters have always been a classic in my wardrobe, but this season beiges, whites, tans and cream sweaters are it.

These soft, warm tone colors are perfect to pair with any winter jacket. Thankfully, sweaters are a very versatile clothing item and are super easy to transition from fall to winter. They are also really easy to accessorize. So investing in one now would be in your best interest.

Surprise surprise, the iconic 80’s plaid blazer look is back!

Bet you never thought about wearing these anywhere except to an interview but look where we are now…

Plaid blazers are making a comeback and every boss woman should have one in her closet. They can dress up any outfit, and can be paired with jeans or trousers. Not to mention, they are extremely comfortable and forgiving.

Whether you have a busy day ahead or just wanna look cute, try out wearing a blazer! I guarantee you’ll fall in love.

This is no surprise but the “lazy look” is here for women. Personally, this is my go to style because it’s so comfortable.

I’m happy to throw the skinny jean craze away in favor of loose fit, classic jeans. Jeans can be worn on any day of the week with a simple tee shirt or sweater. Definitely expect to get great wear out of these this winter.

Last year’s trend of the jogger is dead but it brought comfy sweats on to the racks. This winter bet on staying warm and comfy in school/the workplace, while still looking “acceptable”.

Chelsea boots have been in for some time now, but I truly think they are going to hit the spotlight this year. These boots are super practical but perfect for any winter outfit. The easy slip on boots will keep your feet warm on long walks and blend in well at school or the workplace.

If the typical Chelsea boot isn’t really your style, you can definitely bet your money on some snakeskin boots.

Honestly, when the animal print style was booming I wasn’t really in love with it. But these subtle snakeskin boots will make you feel like a million bucks as well as keeping you warm throughout the cold months.

Now get out there! And use this as a foundation and have fun with your fashion.

‘Joker’ review

Joker was released a month ago and has already become an icon to film history. It has made over 300 million in the U.S and even more in other countries. Joker has now been titled as the highest grossing film, with its rating, of all time.

Joker takes place in 1981 and is about a man by the name of Arthur Fleck, who is played by Joaquin Phoenix. Arthur suffers serious depression issues and problems with constantly laughing. He has a passion for playing as a party clown.

Many people see Arthur as a freak and often will poke fun at him, or even beat him on the street. Arthur takes care of his mother in his small apartment while he’s not at work.

When a coworker of his gives him a gun, his entire life changes and he soon starts doing things to people that causes debates and havoc around the city. He dresses as a clown which is seen as an icon around the city of Gotham.

When I first saw this movie, I was instantly impressed by the uncomfortable camera angles and blurred backgrounds; it really fit for the unsettling and eerie feeling to the movie. The film’s awkward feeling fit very well for the movie but often would get a little consistent and would get a little awkward in a bad way and drew out the scene for too long. Other than that, most awkward moments were fitting.

I believe that the acting in the movie couldn’t have been better. Joaquin Phoenix really made you believe he was psychotic human being. The side actors were also very talented and something that really stuck out to me, was the reactions to certain things that occurred to the film. Such as when a person was killed, they would respond in a way that would make you feel uncomfortable and feel like it was almost real.

This film also sets a very high message to real life. Whether it’s debates, the economy, or the way people are treated these days. It kind of makes you think about how awful individuals can be to each other.

Overall, I believe that this movie deserves the love it has been getting and I’d give it a solid 9/10

4 places in Minnesota to visit this winter

I think that all Minnesotans can agree that our winters are cold.

But, there are two kinds of Minnesotans during the winter: those who embrace the cold, and those who don’t. This article is a list of activities to do this winter to bring out the inner, cold, Minnesotan within you.

1) Lake Superior Ice caves

The Lake Superior Ice caves are a truly amazing place to visit this winter.

It’s an amazing experience that has been around for a billion years. People say you can’t imagine the beauty of it until you see it for yourself. The caves are in a rural section of the coastline and there is a 1 mile hike across the frozen coast to reach them.

When you arrive, you can wander inside the caves and admire the pink, deep blue, white, and glass-like icicles that surround you from left to right, and above. In certain parts you can slide down little hills of ice and crawl inside concaves that are nothing like you’ve ever seen before.

It’s best to visit sooner rather than later, because of climate change not allowing this amazing event to occur every year. Although you might want to dress warm if you do go. Very warm.

2) Roseville Oval

The Roseville oval is a huge outdoor skating rink for hockey players, figure skaters, and just about anyone regardless of their skill level at skating. The Roseville oval is unique because of its size and is definitely a place to spend one of your cold days this winter.

 3) Keg and Case Market

Another way to enjoy your Minnesota winter, without having to deal with the cold, is to visit the Keg and Case Marketplace on West 7th Street, in Saint Paul.

This market is very unique and doesn’t offer what your normal farmer’s market would. The stores here vary from, bubble tea and homemade cotton candy, to a mushroom farm and pottery.

It’s a very warm, fun, and cozy atmosphere. Once you go, you’ll just want to keep coming back.

4) Saint Paul Winter Carnival

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is an event, more of a tradition, that has been happening in Minnesota for a little over a hundred and fifty years! This carnival consists of ice sculptures, ice themed games, food trucks, vendors, and the classic Vulcans Vs King Boreas parade/ battle to determine if we will have a long winter or spring is on its way.

Overall, these are fun, entertaining, and unique places to visit in Minnesota this winter. You’re sure to be amazed with all of them, and to be surrounded with Minnesota culture.

Positive mindset

A positive mindset isn’t something you can easily achieve in one day or overnight. It’s also not something that will stay constant. Every person has their ups and downs. With a better mindset, however, you’re bound to have more ups than downs. Or, you’ll be able to switch your downs to ups.

Always thinking positive can be hard sometimes. It’s something you sort of have to memorize in your brain. You train it to think happy when something bad in your life is happening. For example, when I’m stressed with school work I try not to get angry or frustrated because that won’t help me. Instead I think of ways to manage my time and I set goals for myself to finish the work.

There is so much you can do to help grow your brain into a positive mindset. Starting your day off right is key. How you make up and spend your time in the morning could affect your whole mood for the day. Some good morning tips can be eating a good breakfast, getting in a light workout, meditation, or music you enjoy. Some people have their alarm set to songs they love so that the first thing they hear makes them happy.

In the morning it’s also nice to just takes a few minutes and meditate. You can sit and think about your daily goals and remind yourself how you’ll approach things and your day.

There are a lot of things you can do during the day too. You can try to focus on the things that make/are making you happy. Do your best to not let little situations or things make you upset. Anything could switch up your mood. It’s always best to try to see the bright side of things or see them from a different perspective. During the day, it’s also a good goal to remember to smile, say “hi” to people, give compliments, and overall be nice.

During the night, before you go to bed, is a great time to recap on your day. A good idea is to keep a journal of your thoughts, where you can share everything you’re feeling. Some ideas to help recap on your day is to share three new things you appreciate in your life everyday. You can also share three things that made you happy everyday, and explain one of your favorite moments of that day. Doing this can help you focus on the good things that happened instead of the bad.

Everyone has their own ways of looking at things. People can have different ways of staying positive. These were just some tips and ideas on how you can go about your day. Doing this for one day may make you feel better for a short time. But doing things like this constantly will make you feel better for a long term.

Joining a sport

Joining a sport, especially at school, can be nerve-racking but brings many bonuses. If you’re contemplating whether you should or not, read the following benefits that may help you to decide.

  1. Feel more connected to the school. Joining a sport may make you feel closer to the school. Not to mention how being part of a team, representing Highland Park, will hopefully help you to perceive school as more of a positive thing too. It is not a lifetime commitment and only lasts a matter of weeks. It’s not about being the best, but instead applying yourself and enjoying whatever you choose to do.
  2. Meet new people. Meeting new people is definitely a big part of joining a sport in general. The bonus of meeting them through a sport is sharing similar hobbies and interests. For many people, meeting people on a sports team is the easiest way to connect and share a friendship with because you are all part of one team. You all will likely share one common goal to work hard and get better at the skills, or times, you want to achieve during the season.
  3. It’s all just for fun and the experience. Lastly, and personally, a very important reminder is that joining a school sport is to have fun. It is not supposed to be something you feel like you have to do because it is all just for your own enjoyment. It is okay to feel nervous about putting yourself out there and doing something you enjoy, because you are worried that you are not considered good enough. There are little to no limitations in joining a school sport for a reason.

So, please consider some of these reasons if one of the sports coming up intrigues your interest. Also, keep in mind that this may be your only one of the few times you are able to participate in a school sport, so just try it out and hopefully you will have no regrets in the end!

Math team at HPSH

The Math team at Highland is mainly directed by Mr. O’Connell and Mr. Anderson. The Math team meets every Monday and Wednesday at 3:15-4:15 in Mr. O’Connell’s room on the second floor, room: 2305. The season typically goes from early October to early March.

In Math team there are four different “events.” “Events” are the different sections of math that you can try and compete in. There is Event A, Event B, Event C, and Event D. The content in these events change after every meet.

During practice, on Mondays and Wednesdays, you get your events and snacks as well. You must choose two events that you would like to compete in. There is also always at least one teaching. The teachings are on what you will most likely need to know when it comes to the questions that will show up in the events.

Practice on these events is done by completing the different events that were given in the past years. There is one given each year of each event section.

You get 12 minutes to complete each event. This time limit is used during both practice and the actual meets. During a meet, you get 12 minutes to complete each event. You also get scratch paper that you may use to solve the problems. There are typically 4 problems on each event.

Each meet is typically around 2 hours. The meets take place in other SPPS schools, and you get meal tickets that get you food. For food there is usually pizza and pop. There is a bus that takes you to the other school and a bus that takes you back to Highland.

In order to join the math team there is a fee of $35. Math team gives you a chance to enhance your knowledge on math, meet new people, go to other schools, and it looks great on college resumes, so why not give it a try!

‘Coraline’ review

Button eyes and spiderwebs, Coraline is full of the stuff of nightmares.

Coraline was originally a novella written by Neil Gaiman, published all the way back in 2002. It quickly won many awards, which may I say, it deserved. In 2009 it was adapted into a stop motion film by Laika, which also appears to be quite well received.

And in this one occasion, the movie may be just as good as the book.

Coraline is about a young girl, called Coraline, who has just moved to a new house. She feels as though her parents don’t pay enough attention to her, and she’s slightly ignored, not to mention bored. Then, she finds a small door in her house, which was originally boarded up, but suddenly one night, it is not. It leads Coraline to a fantastical world with two other parents and all the stuff she could ever want. But her other mother has more plans than just trying to make Coraline happy, and Coraline must fight not only for her own life, but also her parents’, to get out of the other mother’s world.

The book and the movie do have some differences though, the movie spends much more time exploring the world and characters, while the book is very fast paced.

The book and movie are listed as horror, so while they are aimed at children, they are also full of ghoulish imagery. For example, the scene in the movie with Misses Forcible and Spink; trust me, you do not want to know that scene.

Neil Gaiman is also the author of novels such as American Gods, Good Omens, Anansi Boys, and more.

Laika, the studio that made the movie, also has made other movies such as Paranorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, and recently Missing Link.

I cannot recommend Coraline high enough. The book is short and a fun read, and I could rewatch the movie over and over again. If you are looking for a spooky movie to watch after Halloween, or just a fun time, Coraline is a must-see.

Homicides in St. Paul

In the city of St. Paul, there have been 28 homicides in only one year. This is the most homicides in a decade. The two shooters on Sunday evening, November 10th, brought the tally up by 2. During the month of September, there were only 9 shootings.

The mayor of St. Paul has had enough and called a public meeting to discuss public safety.

Recently, there has been a shooting that happened the 2nd week of November, on Maryland Ave and Hazelwood St. A person was shot and it was reported at around 5pm. When the police came to the scene, one of the men was dead and the other one was injured badly,

Another shooting happened in the Highland neighborhood, which is St. Paul’s 27th case. A man was shot in a car and the woman with him was injured as well. It happened on a Friday morning and is being investigated immediately.

There were 2 shootings that happened this past Wednesday, November 6th. The first one involved a senior football player from Henry Sibley. The second one was a gas station situation that involved a U.S Marshal.

The first guy, Da’Qwan Jones-Morris, was accidentally shot by his friend and one person said that it didn’t look like they were fighting. The police were questioning people but there were no arrests made.

The second one happened on 7th St and Kittson St when a U.S. Marshall shot an armed man who was trying to kill a car full of people.

The Star Tribune recorded another recent shooting that just happened this past weekend as well, which is St. Paul’s 30th shooting. This happened on Rice St and Wayzata St at around 5pm.

The city of St. Paul is planning on having a meeting to talk about the shootings and the violence. If this continues it may beat the 1992 record which saw 34 shootings.

John Witherspoon passed away at the age of 77

On October 29, actor and comedian John Witherspoon, who starred in countless movies and many TV shows, for over the past 4 decades, died at his home at the age of 77 from a heart attack.

The family of John Witherspoon released a statement to the media saying:

“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working man in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77.” The family continued the statement by saying, “We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal,’ but he was a huge deal to us.”

John Witherspoon was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1942. He later began his career as an entertainer and became a stand up comedian in the 1970’s. Just a few years after, he made his first television debut by appearing in shows including a detective series called Barnaby Jones.

Despite his roles in shows, in 1995, John Witherspoon arguably starred in his most known, and iconic role, in the comedy film, Friday starring Chris Tucker and Ice Cube. In this movie he played the role of Ice Cube’s dad. He continued to play his dad for the rest of its sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next.

Ice Cube and many other celebrities that worked with, or were close with, John Witherspoon spoke about his death over social media. “I’m devastated over the passing of John Witherspoon, Life won’t be as funny without him.” Ice Cube wrote on Twitter.

Another huge role John Witherspoon also played was the character, John “Pops” Williams, in the hit show The Wayans Bros, where he also played a father figure. “I’m sad. Broken. Hurt… yet extremely grateful to God that I got to spend 5 years of my life working with one of the funniest sweetest wisest humblest loving men,” Marlon Wayans, who played the son of John Witherspoon on The Wayans Bros, wrote on Instagram.

Many other celebrities including Regina King, Edie Murphy, Chris Tucker, and countless others sent their condolences and reminiscing about the times they shared with John Witherspoon.

John Witherspoon is survived by his wife and two sons.
