Things you shouldn’t say to people with mental illness

Mental health has been a hot topic recently, and there are many ways that people view those who suffer from mental illness. The most common mental health problems are: depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Whether you know it or not, some of the things you say to people with these disorders can cause more harm than good. Here are the most common things that are said that don’t really help people who suffer from mental illness feel any better.

In response to learning someone has depression: “You should try yoga”, “Have you tried happy thoughts?”, “But you have nothing to be depressed about.”

The issue with suggesting physical activities like hiking or yoga is that depression, especially that which is caused by a chemical imbalance, isn’t that easy to get rid of. It’s not simply feeling sad or blue; it is feeling so hopeless or worthless that the simple tasks of everyday life become challenging, and even waking up can become hard. Depression is not always situational, which is caused by deeply stressful occurences in life, but sometimes is clinical, that which is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain.

The best way to get rid of situational depression is getting rid of the stressor(s) in your life.

“You don’t look schizophrenic.”

This kind of goes for all mental illnesses.

Of course someone isn’t going to look like they have a mental illness, since mental illness is internal. You wouldn’t say to someone with heart disease that they don’t look like they have a heart disease.

Using “triggered” to describe someone who is upset.

Now, bear with me, because some of you may just think “You’re being too sensitive!”, but the word “triggered” is actually a word used in mental health rehabilitation circles. It’s used commonly in therapy for people who have experienced traumatic events including, but not limited to: sexual assault, abuse, and fighting in wars. Triggers can be certain words, smells, sights, or sounds. When people hear, see, or smell these certain things it will make the individual vividly remember their trauma. Triggers are common in people who suffer from PTSD.

In the case of sexual assault or abuse, triggers can be strange in the eyes of the person who is not afflicted, but that doesn’t make a trigger any less real for the afflicted person. There is no approved list for things that cause people to vividly remember traumatic experiences, since everyone’s brain makes connections differently.

“He can’t make up his mind! He’s so bipolar!” Or anything like that.

Bipolar episodes are not anything like common belief. Bipolar episodes can last up to months with one feeling manic and/or depressed. The switch between the two feelings is not within seconds like commonly believed. So, when you say this, you are trivializing, and minimalizing, a debilitating disorder to just being indecisive.

In response to anxiety: “Just stop being anxious!”

Wow, I’m cured. Do I even need to explain this? Anxiety can’t be controlled like this. No mental illness can be controlled. If it were, don’t you think people who suffer from it would just stop being mentally ill?

“I don’t believe in mental illness.”

Ok, good for you? That doesn’t change the fact that I’m definitely mentally ill. In fact that’s only proved to me that I can’t trust you enough to be able to talk about my mental illness.

“You’re just making it up for attention!”

When you say this to someone you are essentially telling them “I don’t value your feelings enough to believe that you’re actually going through a major problem that affects a majority of the populous, so I’m just going to assume you want attention.”

Trust me, in the case of depression, the last thing depressed people want is to feel like their depression is causing a burden on someone.

As someone who suffers from depression, the treatment of people with mental illness is a very important to me. All I’m asking for is a bit of empathy and understanding. How hard is it to be a decent person?

If you are experiencing any symptoms of mental illness, please contact a doctor, counselor, or adult you trust.

STRANGER THINGS 2

By : Eddie Lopez

The new Stranger Things season 2 debuted on October 27th, and the fans are going crazy! The new season has broken records; placing, once again, first, on the most viewed TV series on Netflix, with the premier being viewed by 15.8 million people. For perspective, that’s about ⅓ of ALL Netflix subscribers that were watching, and it’s what the season deserves.

Stranger Things 2 has delivered exactly what fans have been asking for in a sequel. The same 80’s sci-fi vibe, and all the traits we all loved were brought back for the new installment. Exploring everything we were left questioning in the last season; like more of Eleven’s backstory (SPOILER ALERT: yes, she’s alive!). And tying up the ends from the last season’s epic cliffhanger. So, if you haven’t watched it yet, then…Go. Watch. It.

It’s been over a week since season 2 was released, which is a fair enough time to finish the 9 episodes, so spoilers ahead!!!!

The new season comes with new characters, who add, yet keep, the same feel we all loved from season 1. It also introduces a new villain, the Mind Flare, aka – Shadow Monster, which taunts Will in his nightmarish visions of the Upside Down. The Upside Down is also explored in more depth, explaining more of how it works and why it is there. It also brings back the lovable gang of middle schoolers, Mike, Lucas, Will, and Dustin. There is also more exploring of their families and personal lives.

The story stays in Hawkins, Indiana, whilst also having a stand alone episode in the city of Chicago. It follows Eleven in search of her long lost sister, who had also been kidnapped and experimented on by Dr. Brenner in Hawkins National Laboratory. Although her sister Kali is left untouched by the story, and only seems to be brought into the show as a way for Eleven to let her anger out, she also teaches Eleven how to control her powers and her angry past. Fans are already anxious to see what the producers do with her in the upcoming seasons, but for now, Kali is left forgotten.

Although there were many small things left unfinished, like Eleven’s mom’s story, her sister, and Max’s past, fans are very satisfied with the ending of this season; leaving mostly everything solved and happy. Yet, something still lurks in the sky of the upside down, the MIND FLARE!

It is revealed that they indeed did not quite defeat the Shadow Monster and it is still lurking in the Upside Down. I guess we’ll have to wait till season 3 next year.

Starbucks new Zombie Frappuccino

The Zombie Frappuccino is a blended beverage that’s more “treated than trick” with delicious apple and caramel flavors. It has a green body made with Frappuccino cream, infused with flavors of tart apple and caramel, and topped with a pink whipped cream “Brian” and a red mocha drizzle.

The intentionally disgusting looking drink had been available in all Starbucks stores, in both the United States and Canada, and this is not even the first year that Starbucks has served a Halloween themed drink. You could pari your drink with mummy cake pops, or Day of the Dead cookies which the store also has for purchase.

According to some of the Starbucks workers I asked, they said the point of the drink was to scare customers, especially the early morning Frappuccino lovers. Some of the customers I also asked, told me that they didn’t liked it, and that it tasted like gas, while others told me that they really liked it, and though it was very sweet, the bitterness of the mocha syrup, and the creaminess of the Frappuccino base helped balance things out.

Starbucks started their Halloween offerings in 2014, when they introduced a limited edition Frankenstein’s Frappuccino, and in 2015/2016 it served the vampire inspired Frappula Frappuccino. The Frappuccinos usually start appearing on Oct 26 – 31.

As for me, the first time I heard about the Frappuccino, I was at work, and one of my coworkers asked me if I had tasted the new Starbucks. I told her no, and she was like “don’t try to taste it” because it made her to feel bad. But I wanted to try it, and it was good, and I liked it. I also encouged my friends to try it, some of them liked it, and some said it had too much sugar, but it was still good though.

I hope you guys try it, and share how you felt about it, and about how it tasted.

BTS “Love Yourself: Her” album review

BTS is a South Korean boy band that is popular all over the world (internationally famous), and recently they released a new album Love Yourself: Her on September 18, 2017, by Big Hit Entertainment. This album has a total of 9 tracks (not including hidden song “Sea”). This was their comeback album, which also came with a performance of them singing while dancing specific choreography for the songs.

The songs they put on their newest album are:

1. Intro: Serendipity
2. DNA
3. Best of Me
4. Dimples
5. Pied Piper
6. Skit: Billboard Music Awards Speech
7. Mic Drop
8. Go Rather Than Worrying (Go Go)
9. Outro: Her

“Serendipity” is a solo song sung by Jimin; he even has a music video made for it with over 37 million views on YouTube.

“DNA” is the most popular song on the album, sung by all the members of BTS, and they made a very colorful, energetic, and beautiful music video for it that has over 134 million views. It was #1 on iTunes in over 29 countries. They also released teaser trailers for the music video, which were very popular trending videos on YouTube for awhile.

“Skit: Billboard Music Awards Speech” is a 1:47 speech they gave while receiving their Billboard Music Award, which was received by them in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 21, 2017. BTS was so grateful that they won this award, they traveled all the way from Korea to America to go to the Billboard Music Awards just because they were nominated. You could tell they were very happy about the outcome of them winning.

“Mic Drop” is a song sung mainly by the rappers of the group: Jhope, Suga, and Rap Monster. This is a very popular song on their album, because of its strong hip hop influence, which is very different than the rest of the album. It still fits in though. Rapper “Rap Monster” (or Namjoon) has revealed in an interview that this song was inspired by former president Barak Obama’s mic drop after his speech. (This song has been rumored to have a music video coming soon)

Healthy lifestyle

Transitioning from the summer and into the fall is pretty hard for a couple of reasons including: 1. work starts for many adults, 2. starting a new school year is hard for kids. But there are some ways to break out of bad old habitats, and start doing things the healthy way!

I know you’ve heard this a lot from doctors, teachers, friends, and even your parents: drink a lot of water. It’s good for you, when you’re sleeping you don’t drink any water and your body is in need of water. So, drinking a glass right when you wake up is good; it gives you energy to actually get up and get your day started.

Eat some breakfast before you leave the house; it doesn’t have to be a big meal just a smoothie or a granola bar would do.

OK, maybe you’re not a morning person. You can crank on some music, and that will stop your feelings of tiredness. Well, don’t just stand there, dance to the music! This isn’t only fun, but it could count as exercising too. Then go to school/work as happy, and energetic as possible.

It’s understandable that it’s hard for many people to start a healthy lifestyle, because most people are busy with life. But putting some effort into changing your lifestyle is all that you need. After coming back from school/work, try to exercise for at least 30 minutes; yes, that’s right, only 30 minutes.

If you really don’t feel like exercising, then try to eat a healthy meal, by a healthy meal we mean – watch out for the amount of calories it contains, and also how much carbs are in it. According to the Human Department of Health and Human Services “Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity, your diet can help you to reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of chronic diseases.”

So, leading a healthy lifestyle is not only good for your physical features, and your self-esteem, but it also reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Examples of chronic diseases are: arthritis, heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. We hope this information helps you start to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Weather Review: October and things to look for in November

This year, October set the records for warmest and wettest, of the year, in the Upper Midwest region. October was unusually wet this year, and according to Southeast Regional Climate data, about 20 cities had set a new record of having the wettest October. Only 6 cities reported that October was the coldest month. Some of those cities included: Idaho Falls; Pocatello; and Laramie, Wyoming. Hurricane Nate, along the coast of the Gulf, also consider contributed to southern states having their wettest month as well. In Watertown, New York, because of the continuous rain, it is consider the wettest month.

November is the final month of hurricane season. Though hurricanes, tornadoes, and windstorms are still possible, many cities are now getting snow. Early November and late October have a long history of intense storms, especially in the Midwest region, according to Weather.com. The low pressure of the wind can cause strong winds which damage trees and create power outages. On October 24 of this year, the strong winds caused many power lines to go down in northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

It also caused huge waves so there was some flooding near the coast up north. There is especially lots of flooding during this time around the Lake Superior shore. The storms caused a huge hazard for boats. In November 1975, one of the biggest storms going through Minnesota caused a boat to sink in Lake Superior.

One of things to watch out for in November is the severe thunderstorms which can leads to tornadoes or hail storm. Last November, there were about 3 dozen storms that hit the South. There is the lake-snow band to watch out for as well if you are near Lake Superior. According to the Weather Channel, the definition of lake-snow band is a weather phenomenon when cold air picks up moisture and heat while passing over a warmer lake. It causes the lake to freeze over until the moisture and heat is lost.

Bombing in Mogadishu

According to the New York Times, more than 270 people were killed, and hundreds were wounded, in a double truck bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia. This happened on October 15, 2017. Senator Abshir claimed that it is one of the most deadliest incident since the 90’s.

Security officials believe that this was caused by a Somali terrorist group, and that they created the bomb. According to the Guardian website, one of the security officials has said that the explosives has been hidden under rice, sugar, and other goods in the truck. They were about 4 miles away from Mogadishu. The bomb then exploded near a hotel on a busy street, which caused many people to die, and wrecked buildings.

Also according to the Guardian website, a woman named Zainab Sharif lost her husband in the bombing, and she said that she lost everything they had. Another woman, named Muna Haj, said that she lost her son during the bombing, and she said that her son doesn’t deserve to die right now, and that the killer deserves to get punished. So many women lost their loved ones and want to know who started the bombing. The group killed innocent civilians and children too.

Many Somali people protested against this and want justice. Many people, including Somali people here in the U.S., are donating money to their families and to the Somali government.

MLB World Series 2017

Unlike last year’s World Series, the 2017 World Series isn’t such a heartbreaker, once in a lifetime event, with a team who hasn’t made a World Series in 100+ years. This year’s World Series includes the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros. The Dodgers finished with a regular season record of 104 wins and 58 loses and a .642 winning percentage. The Astros finished with a regular season record of 101 wins and 61 loses and a .623 winning percentage.

At the end of the regular season, and going into the playoffs, the Dodgers and the Astros both were being looked at as teams that could go to the World Series. The Dodgers having the best record in the MLB, and the Astros having the third behind the Cleveland Indians; they both were contenders for the final game.

The Dodgers played the Arizona Diamondbacks, and won their series in three games 3-0. Then they matched up against the Chicago Cubs for five games, and won the series 4-1.

The Astros played the Boston Red Sox for four games, and won the series 3-1. They next played the New York Yankees for seven nail biting games, but came out with the series victory to play the Dodgers in the World Series.

In the first game of the World Series, the Dodgers took a 3-1 win riding behind pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who pitched a total of seven innings, had 11 strikeouts, three hits allowed, and only a single run allowed.

In game 2, the Astros came out with a 7-6 win and were able to hold on through the 11th inning, and set a record for most home runs hit in a World Series game (which was seven, but after game two it became eight).

Game 3 was a less dramatic game, with the Astros winning a crowd loving game, 5-3 over the Dodgers.

Game 4 was a better game for the Dodgers, with a 6-1 lead in the ninth inning that lead to a 6-2 win over the Astros.

Game 5 of the series was a hard battle for both teams. The game lasted almost 6 hours, and was the most watched telecast since Super Bowl LI in February. It went back and forth with the game tied in the 7th, to the Astros up in the 9th 9-12, to a tie game in the 9th at 12-12. But at last, the Astros came around to win with a final score of 13-12.

Game 6 had the Astros up 3-2 in the series and the Dodgers needed to win to force a game 7. The Dodgers were ready to bring everything they had to bring one last game home, and bring a World Series home to Los Angeles. Game 6 was a pitchers battle, and it all came down to the pitchers being able to throw strikes and make plays. In the 7th inning, the score was 3-1, and the Dodgers were looking clear for the win if they can hold on. The Dodgers ended up holding on and forcing a game 7 to decide it all.

In game 7, the Astros won the final game in an easy 6-1 win. The Astros are now your 2017 World Series champs, and all us MLB fans are looking forward to next year’s season.
