BTS comeback

BTA are now releasing a new album, which means they have a whole new concept for this. All of the members dyed their hair black, because the concept is supposed to be a dark one.

So far, they have released two teaser trailers, the first one was released on May 14th, with over 9 million views. The second trailer was more recent, May 16th, with over 8 million views already.

This concept is different than usual, Last Comeback was pure and soft, and this is more dark. They also released a video of the member Taehyung having a solo song called “Singularity.” This got a lot of attention because it was our first look into what’s to come.

They are also preparing for a tour around the world, like usual, the tickets are already sold out almost everywhere due to the smaller venues they picked. They limited some fans by only allowing people 16 and over into the pit. Soon, they will release more tour dates, but for now everything is sold out in America.

The new album, Love Yourself Tear, is basically a continuous part, with their last album being Love Yourself Her. There will be a third album since they both have 4 versions. Love Yourself Her, Covering Love, and Love Yourself Tear with Your. The next album is Covering Self.

Love Yourself Tear was released May 18th, and so was the music video of their title track, “Fake Love.” The idea of the music video is that all love is fake; that there’s no such thing as love. The music video is also linked to their older videos, meaning it has references for the fans to theorize about.
This album has 11 tracks:

1. “Intro: Singularity”
2. “Fake Love”
3. “전하지 못한 진심” (feat. Steve Aoki)
4. “134340”
5. “낙원”
6. “Love Maze”
7. “Magic Shop”
8. “Airplane pt. 2”
9. “Anpanman”
10. “So What”
11. “Outro: Tear”

This list was released early, to get fans excited, along with member RM stating his favorite song. This time, there was no break in the album, usually there is a skit, or one track where it’s not a song.

Overall, I like the concept of this album; they are kind of going back to their older concepts in a way, but making it better. It has been awhile since we’ve seen them with dark hair like this, and fans are very happy about it.

NCT album

The group NCT relesed a new album called empathy, with a total of 14 songs distributed between 3 groups within NCT. The track list is:

INTRO: Neo Got My Back
BOSS – NCT U
Baby Don’t Stop – NCT U
GO – NCT DREAM
TOUCH – NCT 127
YESTODAY – NCT U
Black on Black
Timeless (텐데…) – NCT U
The 7th Sense (일곱 번째 감각 (第七感)) – NCT U
WITHOUT YOU – NCT U
WITHOUT YOU (Chinese Ver.) – NCT U
Dream In A Dream (梦中梦 (몽중몽)) – NCT U / Ten
OUTRO: VISION
YESTODAY (Extended Ver.) (Bonus Track)

A few of the songs were released early with music videos, those being: “The 7th Sense” by NCT U, “Boss” by NCT U, and “Baby Don’t Stop” sung by Ten and Taeyong. This comeback also introduced 3 new members Jungwoo, Kun, and Lucas, making the member total 18. They will continuously add members as NCT is a constantly expanding group. They are still releasing music videos for the songs they have already put out.

Because the group is always expanding, they have multiple groups within the group, these include: NCT 127, NCT U, and NCT Dream.

They put out the music video “Touch,” by NCT 127, with a very different concept than what NCT usually goes for, so it was surprising. NCT most of the time goes for an edgy concept, but this time it was really soft with them playing tug-at-war and smiling a lot! The music video “Go” for NCT Dream was also a different concept, making this a very good album because of all the changes. They have made NCT Dream more mature and adventurous. Another song they made was “Yestoday,” mainly sang by Taeyong, but this music video is really new and not a lot of information has been released by them about it.

The album is released for sale, and it includes 2 different versions, Reality and Dream version. These different versions basically give more options to the fans; a lot of groups do this so fans don’t have to just have one option. These albums provide a lot of content for fans, and they come with a poster, photo book, cd, photo card or multiple photo cards, etc.

Harry Styles “Medicine”

Harry Styles recently started his 2018 tour, which was to be more inclusive with the people that wanted to go, considering that his tour last year, 2017, was small venues only, in limited locations.

During his concerts, he sings his whole album, and adds in a few extra songs. Last year, he sang songs like “The Chain,” and songs from his group One Direction. This time, he has released two songs that have never been heard; he wrote them when he was writing his album, but they were cut from it.

My personal favorite is “Medicine.” It is a really fun and upbeat song that also gets slow in some parts. This song has caused a lot of talk about it. First off, the song is amazing. People are mad that it was cut from the album and he hasn’t released a studio version. Then, there’s the lyrics. They were analyzed because the song was live and it’s kind of difficult to hear them clearly. Harry Styles basically came out as bisexual in the song by saying “the boys and girls are in, I mess around with him, and I’m ok with it.”

Many news websites, and all over social media, have people talking about Harry, and his lyrics. His fans are really glad that people finally see that he’s bisexual, as we have known/guessed for years. He has been open about it in the past, giving hints, but never saying it straightforward. In an interview he was asked if gender matters when he’s dating, and he said it didn’t matter to him personally; people skipped over this. Harry is now out. He knew what he was doing when he sang this song live, and I’m really happy for him.

Holland

There is a new idol in South Korea, and his name is Holland. He is the first gay kpop idol. He has recently debuted with the song “Nederland,” and the main idea he has said was to make kids feel comfortable with themselves. However, this music video is rated with 19+ age restriction because it features a gay couple/kiss. He is still an openly gay kpop idol, living in South Korea, even with all the backlash he has received about the music video and himself.

Many people are fans of Holland now. He is a clear role model for being true to himself, and the fans are proud of him for staying so strong throughout this whole thing. Holland said in an interview that when he came out to his friends, he thought that things would be fine. They were all in middle school at the time and he told just his close friends. But they were untrustworthy because they thought it was disgusting and told everyone in school. Holland ended up being a serious victim of bullying and was really depressed.

Now that he is in the music industry, he has to do everything by himself; nobody in the music industry so far wants to work with a gay man in South Korea. So, Holland does all of his song making and promoting. He has said that his main goal is to stay true to himself and to make others feel included and accepted; he just wants to make people happy with his music. Holland has received so much positive feedback, considering he had to promote for himself, and many people are saying they are proud of him and that they feel more represented.

BTS at the AMAS

BTS was announced to perform at the AMAS on November 3rd, (the AMAS were on November 19th) and the fans were excited about it. People that are fans of BTS were absolutely freaking out about the fact that BTS is the first K-Pop group performing at the American Music Awards, which is a really big deal considering they would be making a mark in the history of performances, making the awards more inclusive with different music types. BTS was one of the last acts going on, and they actually put them on to perform towards the end, because they were expecting a lot of people watching the AMAS just to see their performance.

The whole time during the AMAS the cameras kept going to BTS to get their reactions to the other performers; showing them on screen a lot. Many celebrities were very excited to see BTS perform, and they posted about how they met BTS and how they are now fans of them. People were really supportive of BTS and were hyping them up often, which made them feel really included, considering they had to travel to America and only one of the members speaks fluent English.

The performances at the AMAS were pretty good, but in my opinion BTS was really well done. They sang their newest hit “DNA,” and danced the choreography that they did in their music video. The audience, I could tell, was blown away by the fact that they danced and sang at the same time, because most of the other performers just stood around and sang, or sat down. The fan chants were actually so loud that they had to mute them out on the TV while BTS performed. I can tell people really liked it, especially Ansel Elgort, he was talking about them a lot. The camera went to him while BTS was singing and he was holding his phone up recording them with a really big smile on his face and now all the fans are relating to him.

BTS fashion

BTS is probably my favorite music group right now, and I’ve noticed that pretty much whatever they do they dress up (nicely) in some sort of way. I love their style so much, honestly, that I believe they are fashion icons. They don’t pay attention to masculine or feminine standards of clothing; BTS wears whatever suits them, and it is so great to see them wearing things you don’t often see men wearing. For one of their most popular photo shoots (for their album Wings), they wore a lot of colors, patterns, and textures of clothing. An example is of the member Suga, he was wearing a silk pink suit with a knit white sweater, which you could say is not the most masculine, and I think that is important. It’s not just photo shoots where their clothes stand out, because that’s somewhat expected to wear something unusual and different, but they are seen out in public wearing things like this as well.

Another thing they do, that is pretty uncommon in fashion, is the fact that they dye their hair very often. They don’t just dye their hair blonde or brown, but colors ranging from orange to mint green and so on. I think it’s really cool seeing them not only with their outfits, but the fact that they dye their hair and then style their outfits to go with their hair color. This is just truely iconic.

BTS have a great fashion sense, and that’s why I love them. I love the fact that they go to the airport, and instead of wearing comfortable casual clothing, they dress up! BTS member Jin actually wore a suit in the airport, which I mean is pretty common for people in business, but they all dressed up like that, (not in a suit but layers and such with accessories). They can just be out in public and they wear basically the same things you would see them wear in photo shoots.

BTS “Love Yourself: Her” album review

BTS is a South Korean boy band that is popular all over the world (internationally famous), and recently they released a new album Love Yourself: Her on September 18, 2017, by Big Hit Entertainment. This album has a total of 9 tracks (not including hidden song “Sea”). This was their comeback album, which also came with a performance of them singing while dancing specific choreography for the songs.

The songs they put on their newest album are:

1. Intro: Serendipity
2. DNA
3. Best of Me
4. Dimples
5. Pied Piper
6. Skit: Billboard Music Awards Speech
7. Mic Drop
8. Go Rather Than Worrying (Go Go)
9. Outro: Her

“Serendipity” is a solo song sung by Jimin; he even has a music video made for it with over 37 million views on YouTube.

“DNA” is the most popular song on the album, sung by all the members of BTS, and they made a very colorful, energetic, and beautiful music video for it that has over 134 million views. It was #1 on iTunes in over 29 countries. They also released teaser trailers for the music video, which were very popular trending videos on YouTube for awhile.

“Skit: Billboard Music Awards Speech” is a 1:47 speech they gave while receiving their Billboard Music Award, which was received by them in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 21, 2017. BTS was so grateful that they won this award, they traveled all the way from Korea to America to go to the Billboard Music Awards just because they were nominated. You could tell they were very happy about the outcome of them winning.

“Mic Drop” is a song sung mainly by the rappers of the group: Jhope, Suga, and Rap Monster. This is a very popular song on their album, because of its strong hip hop influence, which is very different than the rest of the album. It still fits in though. Rapper “Rap Monster” (or Namjoon) has revealed in an interview that this song was inspired by former president Barak Obama’s mic drop after his speech. (This song has been rumored to have a music video coming soon)

Gender roles

by: Ali Limback and Eddie López

The definition of gender roles (according to Google) is basically a set norm of what each gender is supposed to be/act/look like.

The typical norm for guys is to be fit, act very tough, and be interested in sports. Guys can also be intrested in other things besides sports, like video games, and more. Most of the time when guys find things of interest, that are typically “girly” things, they get excluded. Often, since they are not intrested in the same thing as most guys, they find the person weird, so they call them names like “fag” or “queer.”

The typical norm for girls is to be super social, very dainty, with no muscle, and very much into their looks. It’s not the usual to have short hair because that’s a “boys hairstyle.”

A good example of exposing people to non “normal” looks is through celebrities and their fashion choices. Honestly, it is more socially acceptable for a girl to wear “boys” clothes than the other way around. That is why I chose to focus on male celebrity

fashion choices.

Harry Styles has recently been wearing outfits that don’t fit into the standards of normal masculine fashion. He has been seen wearing a lot of woman’s clothing (like blouses) and colors men wouldn’t typically wear. We personally think that it’s great to see someone so high in the music industry (a lot of people look up to him) wearing what he wants to wear, and showing people that we can mix fashion, and there’s not a set gender in clothing. A lot of people are being really great about his recent change in fashion and supporting him through it all.

From Glee, the character, Kurt Hummel, was known for his fashion choices. He was bullied and called very rude things because of what he wore because he was different. He was definitely a character to look up to because even through all the bulling, he did not change his fashion choices because of what other people said. It ended up great in the end because he got such a great job in fashion, and he never gave up on himself.
