Ways to eliminate distractions

It’s finally the start of a new quarter, and hence the perfect opportunity to change your work ethic to shape your study skills from the start, rather than waiting until the last minute to beg your teacher to bump up your grade since you’re only 0.01 percent away from a B. This year, teachers have been emphasizing their resentment towards students who don’t take the initiative to do their best in class from the start. Change your lazy habits now and show your teacher that you’re capable of being responsible.

Seniors, it is especially important for you to get on your teachers’ good side early on so that they will be more than happy to write you a letter of recommendation when you need it. Starting out strong at the beginning of the quarter will definitely motivate you to continue succeeding. Learning how to balance school assignments with home life will simplify your life, you will not have to face the giant snowball effect of work build-up at the end of the quarter, and you are less likely to have cold bitter feelings towards your teachers.

  • Have a bowl of snacks placed right next to you. Nibbling on simple repetitive snacks like peanuts and chips will both prevent hunger from distracting your work momentum and also the repetitive gestures and chewing actions will keep you in the zone longer. You are also less likely to notice the tediousness of your work until you finish the snack. Some good foods that supposedly makes you smarter? Blueberries, spinach, dark chocolate, and fish.
  • Remove all electronic distractions, and only consider using them for educational use. Studies have shown that listening to music may also help the brain, and a little of something in the background will make you less likely to think you’re not only doing homework. Try listening to natural sounds like rain or birds chirping.
  • Sleep is a crucial factor in our ability to succeed, therefore you should get at least eight hours of it every night, instead of waiting until 11pm to complete your internal assessments. FYI: Trying to maintain focus and doing homework while you’re sleepy and tired is the same as focusing while intoxicated.
  • Take 5-10 minute breaks in between assignments. Now is the time to check your phone or stretch, because overworking your brain over a long span of time is not a healthy practice. Even when pulling an all nighter on the assignment due the next morning, still take the five minute break every hour and so.
  • Occasionally changing your methods of studying will help keep your mind focused. Change is good! A good way to educationally make use of your iPad is to download the Quizlet app used to make digital flashcard. Quizlet also offers various activities to help you memorize information using the flashcards you created. It’s easy, simple and fun!
  • Create a comfortable learning environment. Whether it’s your kitchen counter or your couch, make sure you surround yourself with all of the learning materials needed. Bring everything from a bag of pencils and pens, highlighters, textbooks, notebooks, and you may as well bring your backpack too. If having doubts about whether you need that one book, bring it with you anyways.
  • Use a planner. Even though our school does not provide students with one, it is a wise choice to invest in a planner. You don’t even have to spend much on it. You can get a small planner at Walmart for only $5, nothing fancy. Even a mini note pad would work.

And lastly, believing in yourself is a significant tool to boost your confidence. Make goals to become a better person, even if you think you’re already perfect. Instead of just sitting there, staring out into space, make use of every bit of time you have to complete work in school so you don’t have to run into the problem of laziness at home.

Boys hockey update

The Highland Park boys hockey team lost their first game of the season, Saturday, November 21st, against Simley 1 to 4. With the devastating loss still fresh in their minds, I decided to go interview some of the players on the team.

The first player I interviewed was Lee Froelich. I asked Lee what he thought about the unfortunate defeat out in the ice. He replied, “I felt bad about me and my team losing but I feel like our loss was a great learning experience.”

One other player I interviewed was Jacob Boje. I asked him what could he have done better, and he said, “There could have been better communication between the team and we need to work on it at our practice more often.”

Upcoming opponents include:

Minnetonka

Grand Rapids

Park of Cottage Grove

Apple Valley

Benilde-St. Margaret’s

Duluth Marshall

Please come out and support the team!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is that time of year that you can come together and spend time with family, eat good food, and relax. I always remember going to my grandma’s house and helping in the kitchen and then sitting down at the table that was set so beautifully. Spending time with mom, dad, aunts, uncles, grandma, and grandpa. It is one of my favorites holidays. I love to spend time with family and relax. Knowing how much Thanksgiving means to me, I decided to ask a few people what they thought about Thanksgiving.

Darron Chapmen

I asked Mr. Chapmen the following questions:

What are you thankful for? Being the age that he is. He didn’t want to comment on his age.

What do you do for Thanksgiving? “Eat a lot of food when visiting with relatives.”

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? “It’s when family gets together and sits down and eats a good meal and talks about things that pertain to family.”

Andrea Dickinson

Ms. Dickinson, my school counselor, was asked:

What do you do for Thanksgiving? “Get together with family.”

What are some traditions you do every year? “Eat food tried to go out for a walk.”

What are you thankful for? “Heath ,family and spend time with family.”

John Edwards

I asked a student in my class the following:

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? “Sit down with the family and eat and talk about about how thankful we are for each other and how we appreciate each other.”

What do you do for Thanksgiving? “Eat with his family.”

What are you thankful for? “I’m thankful for having a good family.”

Tationna McGee

Another student in my class was asked:

What do you do for Thanksgiving? “Gather  with family and play game and hang out.”

What does Thanksgiving mean to you and what are you thankful for? “Giving thanks to people in your family and being thankful for what I have.”

Purchasing “cat snakes”

I have heard several people discuss getting a new pet recently. I own 3 ferrets and whenever that topic comes up I hear people say “I want to own a ferret one day.” Ferrets are a great animal to own, as long as you can provide everything you need for them.

Ferrets can get a little tricky. They can be messy, stinky, curious, expensive, and sometimes even mean. I have found that the female ferrets seem to be a little more vicious than the males, but by all means do not have these animals around children, even if it seems like the sweetest animal you have ever met. They do have teeth and claws. The children and the animals do not know better. There have been several incidents where parents have had their infants around ferrets and it never, NEVER ends well for the child.

Ferrets will cost you a decent amount of money. You’re going to need to pay for a decently sized cage, preferably multiple litter boxes, litter, ferret food, treats, toys, water dishes, and bedding. Ferrets also require vet visits. It is necessary to get them their rabies and distemper shot, after the first year they will need at least one visit a year. Also, keep in mind, ferrets can catch sickness such as the flu when you are sick, so be careful when holding them when you don’t feel your best.

A ferret’s diet is very simple. They are carnivores, so their diet consists of meat. High in protein, high in energy and low in fiber. Marshall’s Ferrets is a large company that Petco gets their ferrets and other products through. It is a ferret mill that hasn’t had the best reviews on how they treat their ferrets when they are in their fosilities, and also in the products that they sell. Many people purchase a ferret and think ferret food would be the best option for them. I know that’s what I thought, but this is why you should do a lot of research before purchasing an animal. Cats and ferrets have similar nutritional needs. Most high quality kitten foods are better for ferrets than some common ferret foods. A great substitute would be WELLNESS core kitten food. Why wouldn’t you want to feed your ferrets Marshall ferret food? Well, like I said, ferrets are CARNIVORES, strict carnivores and Marshall’s food has a lot of harmful ingredients for these picky creatures. One ingredients in this product is corn, do NOT feed your ferrets vegtebles or fruits. A ferret can live off of Marshall’s ferret food but will not have the longest or healthiest life span (they should live about eight years), they will also be more prone to illnesses.

Buy ferrets in bunches, and learn about the place you’re purchasing them from. Many people purchase ferrets from Petco and do not know that those ferrets come from a ferret mill, and that could also be a result in aggression or health issues. Ferrets consist of a lot, a lot, a lot of attention and I cannot stress this enough.

Do not purchase a ferret without a large time span of researching and thinking about this purchase. A ferret will sleep when they are not being held/played with, just because they are sleeping doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wake them up and play with them. Wake them up! Play with them! At ANY time, they love it. Not having a cage for your ferret and letting them out all day to play is the most ideal thing to do for them, but it is not always the safest, such as in cases where houses may have holes that lead to basements or outside, places that have a lot of cords out, or multiple things you do not want your ferret to get into. Having your ferret out of the cage for four hours a day is the minimum you should be playing with them (especially without a second ferret).

I do not recommend having a ferret if you do not purchase two. They love cuddling, wrestling, and playing with each other. There will be days where you do not have much time to spend with your ferret and those are the days you’re going to be glad you purchased a second because you don’t want a depressed animal, and if you’re okay with your animal not being at its happiest then you should not own one. Some people even say you should purchase three in case one dies and the one left can become HIGHLY depressed in that case. Although, do not purchase too many because vet bills can become intense and when you are not providing them with good health you might as well not have bought one in the first place.

Please, do not go out and purchase a ferret just because you think they’re cute one day – if that’s the case, then you’ll probably be trying to return them in the next two weeks or so.

Just keep in mind that I only went over a few basic key points to purchasing and owning a ferret. Going to Petco to learn all of your information isn’t always the best idea, so use your computer and do your own research. I’ve owned my ferrets for over a year and a half and I’m still learning.

These are amazing animals to own, and you will have a lot of fun with them, without a dull moment, but make sure you remember that this is a long term commitment as they can live eight years if taken care of properly.

Good luck!

Is MOA more concerned about money or people?

People are terrified to leave their houses on Black Friday considering all of the recent terrorist attacks. Mall management has sent out a email to all company managers located in the Mall of America stating that their has been NO recent threats for an attack.

I myself have talked to police officers located at the Mall of America about my concern because I will be working on Black Friday. They told me they have K-9 units working with them, the SWAT team, and they even have their own police station located in the Mall of America. They won’t only have mall cops located in the mall but they are bringing in others from all around Bloomington. Black Friday will be a busy day at the Mall of America, but they are saying they have never been more prepared and are on high security.

Although there has not been threats yet, this does not mean they are lowering their guard. Many people are saying the Mall of America is more concerned about making money rather than losing people, and want them to shut the mall down.

I for one do not believe it’s fair that mall employees are supposed to work on a day they do not feel safe, there is no concern of any threats being made but if you truly do not feel safe – stay home. It’s better to be safe then sorry. Have a safe, fun, and careful holiday weekend, and if you see anything suspicious report it.

Highland Park Cross Country Season Highlights

The Highland Park Cross Country team had an overall very successful season this year including: sending the top seven girls and seven boys of the team to city conference, being conference champions for both girls and boys, and winning against our rival Central!

Girls conference had a great outcome with Erin Moening coming in third place. Boys conference also had a good outcome with Michah Mather coming in second and Abram Donovan getting 5th. Michah Mather also won second during the sections race! The girls team unfortunately did not get into the top three but had three girls in the top thirty, Elizabeth Pearson, Erin Moening, and Anna Schmidt.

This year, the Highland Park Cross Country team sent two boys to state, Michah Mather and Abram Donovan, which has not happened in years, according to their coach Brad Moening. Michah Mather came back with amazing results coming in second place overall. Coach Brad Moening said, “This is one of the best performances we’ve had, we’ve only sent 4 people to state in the past 15 years so this was a big deal. I’m very proud of them.”

Another great mention, and thanks, to the cross country coach, Brad Moening, who was voted “Coach of the Year”. He said, “Being voted coach of the year really reflects how the kids have done and it’s really fun for them to be recognized as well.”

Congratulations Scots! We’re all very proud!

Movie review

I recently saw the new movie Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension at Theatres at Mall of America with my sister. The movie theatre was packed and we sat in the middle.

The beginning of the movie had a slow start like in the other ones. When I was watching the movie I got kinda bored because at times nothing was really happening. It is more interesting when you start seeing things move around and start getting scared.

The movie was about a man and his wife and daughter that are getting ready for Christmas in their new house. After moving in they come across an old camcorder. Later, the husband (Ryan) found out that the camcorder can record strange apparitions that you can’t see. Then, their daughter (Leila) starts talking to an imaginary friend and she starts acting strange. They then find themselves in a terrifying battle with a supernatural force.

Overall, it’s a good movie. On a scale from 1-10 I give it an 8.5 because of how it’s kind of  slow when the scary parts were not happening. Also, if you thought you were getting closure, you’ll be disappointed but overall it’s a great film.

I recommend this film to people who liked the previous Paranormal Activities movies, and like being scared.

Beats Music canceled

Word has spread that the popular Beats Music app is going to be discontinued on November 30th by Apple. Apple’s decision to discontinue the application was able to happen due to Android now offering Apple Music on the Android app market Google Play Store.

On November 30th, all Beats Music subscriptions will be cancelled, but until then, Beats is offering ways to move your preferences and picks to Apple Music. Apple is hoping for the subscribers of Beats Music to then transfer over to Apple Music following the discontinuation

In a document shared by the Beats Music website, http://www.beatsmusic.com,
Beats is no longer allowing new applicants, as well as asking previous subscribers to switch to Apple Music. Beats points out new and improved features to Apple music such as better music recommendations, along with the Beats 1 radio as well.

The Beats website is also offering help for a variety of topics such as offering resources for migrating from Beats Music to Apple Music on both Android and Apple products, unused balance questions, the costs of the service, ect
