Congratulations Annie Conzet and Micah Mather!

Congratulations to Annie Conzet (12) and Micah Mather (11) for being featured as Pioneer Press high school athletes of the week! Annie was featured for volleyball and Micah for cross country. Below are the write-ups of each from the article. We are so proud. Thanks for being all-star representatives of Highland!

ANNIE CONZET

School: Highland Park

Sport: Volleyball

Year: Senior

The Scots rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat Johnson in the first round of the Class 2A-Section 4 playoffs and then defeated Holy Angels in another five-set match. Conzet had 76 assists, 19 digs, 1 ace and a 92 percent serving percentage.

MICAH MATHER

School: Highland Park

Sport: Cross Country

Year: Junior

He was third in the Class 2A-Section 4 meet, matching his school record with a 5,000-meter time of 16 minutes, 5 seconds at Les Bolstad Golf Course. This season, he won the Blaine Invitational and St. Francis Invitational. Next up is Saturday’s state meet in Northfield.

Highland Students Named PiPress High School Athletes of the Week!

This week, three Highland students were named High School Athletes of the Week, by the Pioneer Press. Sophomore Erin Moening for cross country, junior Emilia Czapiewska for volleyball, and senior Molly McMahon for volleyball.

From the article:

“The outside hitters led the Scots (19-4) to victories over Como Park and Central to wrap up a 12-0 season in the St. Paul City Conference. Highland Park won 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 over Como Park and 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 over Central. Czapiewska had four aces, 17 kills, four digs and four solo blocks in the two matches, and McMahon had six aces, 11 kills, six digs and two solo blocks.”

“She won the St. Paul City Conference meet with a time of 16 minutes, 16.8 seconds on the 4,000-meter course at Como Park Golf Course, leading the Scots to the team championship for the third consecutive season.” (Erin Moening)

Girls tennis season recap

Last year’s HPSH Girls Tennis Varsity and JV Teams

The girls tennis team had a great season this year, even though three of the starting varsity players were injured and out for most of the season. Our season started out with captain’s practices during the last week of July and will be finished as of Thursday 10/9.

Our season is almost finished, but we still have two more major events left! First is the individual sections at the University of Minnesota. It’s a competition where two singles players and two doubles teams from each school get to skip a day of school and compete. This year from Highland, Anja Savic (10), Leah Barrett (12), Sabrina Hang (11), and Katie Tennis (11) will be competing for the doubles teams. Emma Dombrow (11) and Preianna Swenson (12) will be the two singles players that are competing. Besides being a very fun opportunity, after the matches the players and Coaches go out to BDubs to eat wings and have some team bonding time.

Besides the individual sections, we also have our final end of the year banquet at Olive Garden in honor of a great season. At the banquet, varsity letters will be given out to the players, and recognition certificates will be given out to the JV players as well. We will also give our final thanks to our two great captains this year, Sabrina Hang (11) and Leah Barrett (12). They had great team spirit and without their leadership the team would not have bonded together as well.

Next Year’s Season: If you, or anyone you know, is interested in joining the tennis team, I would highly recommend it! There is always room for anyone who wants to play, and it is a very fun sport with lots of friendly teammates. If you would like to join or have any questions, contact Mr. Shaw or any of the varsity players. Hopefully we will get some new girls next year!

!Fantasy fitness: Revolutionizing Highland cross country

!Fantasy Fitness was a website/platform created by current Highland junior Tate Bosler back in the summer of 2012. Brad Moening, a staff member at Highland, created the overall concept years prior. Tate took the next step to bring it onto the web. It’s an aerobic training/exercise game played each summer by the Highland Cross Country team, as well as alumni of the team, coaches, parents, and a group of Highland staff members. About 80 people played last year, the second season of the game. The game lasts 10 weeks – 70 days – from the last week of school to the first day of practice (the team’s summer training season).

During the game athletes try to score as many points as possible. Athletes score points by performing aerobic exercise – running, biking, swimming, rollerskiing, and hiking all count for different amounts of points. They then go to the game’s website, ifantasyfitness.com, to post their records. Records get posted onto a leaderboard (http://www.ifantasyfitness.com/leaderboard/?season=2014&disp=a) that is publicly viewable. You win if you score the most points, run the most miles, or if you are on the team with the most points. All players are drafted onto teams, led by upperclassmen, at the start of the game – this year’s Draft is Wednesday, May 28 right after school. It will take place in room 3303. Cross country runners and participants need to register by Wednesday, May 28 at noon. The official competition dates are June 2 to August 10 2014.

Using his skills in web development, Bosler created a platform that will continue to have an impact not only on the Highland Cross Country team but other sports teams at Highland for years to come. “I developed the original version (in 2012) from scratch. I am maintaining it year after year but this is my last year running it. Coach Moening will take over mid-summer and into next year.”

This wrestling season so far has been pretty exciting. Of course it has had its ups and downs, but one thing that has made it exciting is the athleticism of our wrestlers!

We have 4 freshman wrestling this year: Desmond, Zack, Antonio, and David. These freshman are pretty tough and have proved that they should be on our team. They also show a lot of resilience against stronger, smarter and older wrestlers. It’s pretty fun to see when our 1st year freshmen wrestle like the older, more experienced wrestlers.

Our sophomores have a strong core as well, with 8 of total wrestlers, and 5 of them starters. It’s a better younger squad. Our sophomores are Dean, Ethan, Jeff, Jake, Bluhmy, Jack, Qadre, Andy, Ger, Jeff, and John.

Now, our juniors are 2 really stronger competitors: Billy and Steven. These two wrestlers are really experienced and talented.

Then we have our senior, me, Chris. So far this season I’ve seen tons of improvement and have really enjoyed working with this group of athletes. I also look forward to wrestling at Como Park tonight at 7 p.m.

Saint Paul School Board Recognizes Conference Champions

Three Highland Park teams were honored for their conference wins at the Saint Paul School Board meeting on Tuesday, November 12. The girls’ varsity soccer team and the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams were recognized. Having three teams representing Highland Park at the ceremony is an outstanding accomplishment for the school and for all the students who worked to get there. Every student received a medal, was named in front of an audience, and shook hands with members of the School Board.

Principal Winston Tucker and Athletic Director Nancy Galligan were present to support the teams. Valeria Silva, the superintendent, congratulated team members and even stepped in for a photo with the girls’ cross country team!

Elowyn Pfeiffer, the Girls’ Soccer Team Captain and a runner for the Girls’ Cross Country Team, said in regards to soccer: “I’m very proud because everyone tried their hardest every single game and I think that’s why we took conference, because everyone was giving it their all.” In regards to cross country, Elowyn said: “Everybody worked really hard every practice, starting in the summer; the work they put in got us here.”

The event was publicized on a live stream by the Saint Paul Public School website.

Adapted Soccer – Highland (H) vs. Humboldt (V)

Yesterday’s game against Humboldt was a game not to be missed. The HPSH Adaptive Soccer team beat Humboldt 9-2. It was an exciting game which was enjoyed by all. The HPSH Friendship Club organized a group to attend the game and cheer for the Scots. They made posters and along with their enthusiasm, really made the game extra special. Congratulations to the Adaptive Soccer team for their win!

Varsity Volleyball – Highland (H) vs. SPA (V)

Wednesday night’s Girls Varsity Volleyball game vs. the SPA Spartans was the last game of the season for this year’s Lady Scots. Going into the game, both teams were closely ranked so a suspenseful game was to be expected. Many of the games were close, however the SPA Spartans prevailed in the end, advancing in Sections.

Head Coach of the Varsity Volleyball Team, Coach Kramer, shared her thoughts with us regarding the game and the season as a whole: “We played well as a team last night and stayed positive and continued to work hard point for point. We walked away with heads held high knowing we had a great season with a record of 17-8.”

As always, the Highland school spirit was incredibly apparent in the stands. Members of the C-Squad and JV Volleyball teams were there to support the players as well as other HPSH students, staff, parents, and community members. Once again, Ethan Aune (10) lead the HPSH Student section in various cheers, keeping the Highland spirit alive and well.

Even though Highland didn’t win, everyone couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of the Highland Girls Varsity Volleyball team. Their dedication and genuine love of the sport was always apparent from a spectators point of view. Congratulations to the Lady Scots Varsity Volleyball team for a fantastic season:

Varsity Volleyball – Highland (H) vs. Como (V)

Tuesday night’s volleyball game in the Highland gym was an event full of team spirit and fan pride. The Lady Scots Varsity team were up against the Como Cougars for a final game that determined conference position. Lots of fans were in attendance as well as parents, community members, other HPSH staff members, and the HPSH band. There was quite the crowd.

Around 6:55, Coach Kramer and the rest of the team gathered on the gym floor to honor seniors Emma Muter, Lydia Thompson, Edith Kamau, and Chelsi Her by presenting them with handmade blankets made by the rest of the team, as well as sharing kind words about each departing senior. It was a great way to send them off and to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments as members of the team.

After the honoring of the seniors, the long awaited event happened: the throwing of the candy. As each player was introduced, they would throw candy into the stands. It was much enjoyed by all, except if you were hit by an unexpected flying morsel, in which case… well, it could have be worse.

After all the introduction procedure, it was time for the game to start. The Lady Scots got off to a great start, but it was clear from the beginning that Como was going to put up a fight. The first game was close, however Highland pulled it off, scoring 25-23 to win the first game.

Moving into the second game, the team seemed energized, fired up, and ready to go. After Como made it clear that they weren’t going down without a fight, the Lady Scots knew they had to step up their game. After lots of intense back and forth, Como ended up winning the second game 25-22.

At this point, the crowd knew that since a team has to win three games, we would be there for at least another two games. Sophomore Ethan Aune took it upon himself to be the “cheer master” for the Highland student section. He did a phenomenal job. Highland student fans were in some serious need of some cheer organization so it was so awesome when Ethan stood up and took charge. Very well done.

Following the second game, the Lady Scots fought for revenge and succeeded by winning the third game with a score of 26-24. This win seemed to give Como the energy to ramp up their strength and to do everything they could to try to pull of a win. One notable part of the game was Sinead O’Duffy of Como’s extremely unique serve that had previously never been seen by many. It sure was interesting to observe. Como’s increased strength, along with the introduction of a seemingly power serve, lead Como to victory with a 25-13 win.

The fifth and final game fast approached. This was the deciding game to see which team would win the series of games that evening. On the fifth and final game, a team is only required to reach a 15 point threshold before being officially declared the winner. The Lady Scots put up an excellent effort but in the end, Como prevailed 15-7.

Despite the loss, everyone agreed that it was a great evening. The fabulous team oriented dynamic always displayed by the players and parents is truly amazing, even after a heartbreaking loss. As always, the Highland fans remained positive and continued to show their endless pride and passion for fellow scots. After every high stakes sports game, there’s always many tweets that describe an appreciation for the family like dynamic among the student body at Highland. That couldn’t of been more apparent last night. #ScotsNation always and forever.
