Inktober 2018

No, I did not misspell October.

Inktober is a month long drawing challenge that takes place during October. The challenge is to fully complete one ink drawing every day from October 1st through the 31st. The challenge was created by Jake Parker back in 2009 to help artists develop their skills and get in the habit of drawing every day. There aren’t many rules, just draw and complete a full piece every day, and upload it onto Instagram or any social media platform.

Some people wonder why Inktober is a challenge. Why not just draw every day? What makes Inktober more challenging than “drawing every day” is that you must fully complete the drawing. Personally I draw every day, but most commonly the drawings are just sketches, and not inked and completed pieces.

How do you come up with an idea every day? On the official Inktober website there is a prompt list. The first prompt list was created in 2016. Each year the prompts change, although I have noticed many of the prompts tend to be fall/Halloween themed. There is a different prompt for every day, and although most people follow these prompts it is never required. Some groups also make alternative prompt lists. Feel free to come up with your own ideas, or only follow your favorite prompts!

Now, you’re probably thinking I’m crazy right now. Thirty one days of drawing? If a whole month is too much for you, people also do a “half-marathon” (One drawing every other day) or a “5k” (One drawing a week). There is also some confusion about which art supplies to use. Originally, the challenge was to do just black and white ink. Now, people do color as well, but the official rules suggest limiting the amount of color that you use to one or a few colors. People have also done calligraphy, lettering, watercolors, and more. If you do decide to participate this year (It’s not to late!) or in the future, just remember that you are the artist – do this challenge to help yourself and have fun!

What happened with TellTale Games

The gaming company TellTale started up in October of 2004, and nearly 14 years later, they shut down. But why? Were they not making good sales? Were they in the middle of a huge controversy? Did the employees stop caring? Well, here’s where you find out.

TellTale started off small, and it wasn’t until a crisp April day in 2012 that TellTale truly got its start with their game, The Walking Dead. The first season of their game boasted five episodes, and by November it was all complete. It received huge praise, winning over eighty awards. It topped the sales chart for Xbox, and when I say pretty much everyone played it, I mean it.

The Walking Dead started an era. An era of choice-driven games. In TellTale’s series, you, the player, can choose what to say and how to act. You are in charge of your relationships with others, who dies, who lives, and how well your group survives.

But is that true? TellTale tells the player in the beginning “Your choices matter,” but is that a lie? Sadly, pretty much. Sure, you have choices, you can make someone hate you, and you can even sacrifice someone to save another. But it doesn’t matter.

In the game you have to choose between two people to save. Doug and Carly. You would think that whoever you save would change the game. That these two characters will start a new storyline, and the game will change depending on who lives, and who dies. But no matter you save, they die soon later anyway, leaving the game unchanged. It creates an illusion of choice.

Sure, if TellTale’s games were only one of a few choice-based games then maybe nobody would have minded. The problem is that The Walking Dead became so popular that game companies realized they could make massive profit from those types of games. And why play a game that tricks you into believing that your choices matter when you can play a game where they actually do matter?

A good comparison is between TellTale’s The Walking Dead, and Quantic Dream‘s Detroit: Become Human. In the latter game, you can see a map at the end of every episode or section you play. You can see what choices you made, and the different branches of choices that you didn’t. There are tons of endings and small details that differ depending on what you, the player, chose.

So really, TellTale started an era in the gaming world, but it was their eventual downfall. The games being created to capitalize on the popularity of that genre were better than the one that started it all.

But I’m sure you’re thinking “That can’t be the only reason! Just because their games didn’t have real choices!” And you’re right. So let’s look at the next reason why TellTale couldn’t keep afloat.

Employees were generally unhappy. Many worked long hours, and the management was toxic. There was barely any organization. Nobody really kept track of what was going on. The management stopped interacting with their staff, and that meant less morale.

As TellTale got more popular, the more they made games. Soon they started working on multiple games at once. Instead of choosing developers to stick to one game, they rotated developers. This made the creation process to be more sloppy, and many workers didn’t understand this decision.

There wasn’t even any proper schedule. Rewrites and improvoments of the game were asked very last minute. Employees say that it was a constant barrage of work with no break, six day work weeks, with about 18 hours for each of those days. New developers couldn’t handle it, and the older ones were not putting in all their effort.

Eventually, TellTale couldn’t handle the stress. It collapsed under its own foundation.

Over 200 workers were laid off without severance, many took to Twitter to say not to work extreme overtime for a company that, in the end, will not care about you.

Many other game companies told these employees that they could always come and work them. At least there’s a silver lining to the storm clouds.

It is unknown if TellTale will continue the final season of The Walking Dead. The episodes are set to release in November and December, and their MineCraft Netflix series will be finished.

Why is social media addictive?

By: Mateo Barrera

In recent years, social media has become increasingly more popular, with almost everyone having access to an electronic device. Because of almost everyone having an electronic, it’s really easy to get social media apps such as Instagram and Facebook because they are free.

Social media is an access point for people to get recognition from people that they know and people that they haven’t even met. But not only that, it also gives people opportunities to share their opinions to other people. Due to this, people have created a sort of addictive habit to go onto social media constantly to check others’ posts and their own.

According to an article on The Huffington Post, the psychological reasoning behind the addiction is because  “Social media engagement has been found to trigger three key networks in the brain – the ‘mentalizing network’, the ‘the self-referential cognition network’ and the ‘reward network.’”

The use of the mentalizing network is important because one of the sections of your brain that is being used in the mentalizing network, the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, is used to basically help us judge how people are, through looking at them, and “has been the reason we exist today.” So, the use of this section of your brain is super important.

The self referencing section of your brain is used because on social media a lot of the time you are talking about yourself, so it is clear to see why it is used.

The reward network of your brain is triggered during the use of social media because the people who post on the platforms get a sense of reward from their friends and other people liking the things that they have posted. This feeling is a lot stronger when you are a teenager because one of the sections of your brain connected with the reward system, the nucleus accumbens area, is connected to “exaggerated” feelings of pain and pleasure. And this is why it is a lot more common for teenagers to use social media than adults, or at least feel more feelings towards the things that they post.

BTS ‘Love Yourself’ tour

The time has come again for BTS to gear up for another successful world tour. BigHit, BTS’s label, announced their upcoming world tour on April 26, 2018. The initial number of shows were 7 in Asia, 15 in North America, 7 in Europe and 29 in total, but BigHit revealed on July 30, 2018 that they’ve added 4 more shows to the Japanese leg of the tour, making it 33 total shows.

So far, they’ve had 12 shows in Seoul, Los Angeles, Oakland, Fort Worth, and Hamilton. All of their shows have been sold out. They performed at the Seoul Olympic Stadium, with 90,000 people in attendance. In their North America locations, they’ve performed at the Staples Center, Oracle Arena, Fort Worth Convention Center, and the First Ontario Centre, and had 164,000 attended in total.

BigHit has announced that BTS will be performing at Citi Field Stadium in New York. Tickets sold out in 20 minutes making them the first Korean artists to have a concert in a U.S. stadium.

For the European Leg of the tour, BTS will be visiting London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris. The London dates sold out in two minutes, and the Berlin shows sold out in nine minutes. BigHit has revealed that all 100,000 tickets for their European leg have been sold out.

With almost every show sold out, new locations and concerts are in high demand. BTS will most likely be adding more events to their tour, so the ARMY (BTS’s fan base) should be on the lookout for additional tickets and concerts.

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ review

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has just hit it’s 13th season, bringing it closer and closer to being the longest running live-action sitcom. The premiere for this season, titled “The Gang Makes Paddy’s Great Again,” has recently aired, and it was…just okay.

The first notable difference in this season is the absence of Dennis (Glenn Howerton). In the season 12 finale, Dennis left to North Dakota, so he could be a father to his son. This was because Howerton was doing another show, and didn’t know if he could do Sunny along with it. He had been there since the first season, offering angry outbursts and a chin chiseled by the gods themselves, it was sad to see him go.

His replacement was Cindy, played by Mindy Kaling (her most notable role being Kelly Kapoor from The Office). In Sunny, Kaling plays a manipulative women, who knows how to get Paddy’s more customers through lies and, well, manipulation. We first see her speaking to a crowd in Paddy’s, explaining how welcoming the gang had been, and that it is a great bar for people of all religions, sexuality, and gender.

As soon as her speech is over we cut to the back office, where Cindy explains that they finally got the “liberal crowd” for Paddy’s. It was a fake speech meant to entice the left to Paddy’s, so they could have more customers. The gang thanks her, and we learn that next they’ll be going for the conservatives by “Making Paddy’s Great Again.”

We cut to Mac’s apartment. This is where Mac decides to unveil his new abs, so it looks like we’ve come a long way from season seven’s “Fat Mac.” We then learn that Mac also bought a Dennis look-alike doll, that really creeps out the rest of the gang. This doll is what turns the episode from a political satire to a whole new plot.

Cindy eventually shows up, and explains her whole plan, and tells Mac to get rid of the doll. But he doesn’t. When the gang gets ready to do the plan, it seems to be perfectly fine. Dee is beautiful, Frank can play the tuba, Mac and Charlie have wonderfully decorated “Liberal Tears” signs for the right-wingers.

But the plan falls apart when the Dennis doll gets in their heads. The gang swears they can the hear the doll talking to them, saying everything that Dennis would say. This confuses Cindy, and of course makes her angry as it is making her plan fall apart. Dee ruins her make-up, Charlie and Mac ruin the signs, and Frank can no longer play the tuba. Everything is destroyed due to this doll, and therefore, because of Dennis.

Which is why, when Dennis comes back, Cindy gets so upset. It’s understandable, he ruined her plans and constantly bashes the gang, but he’s a part of them. That’s why it’s also so understandable that the gang lets him back in.

Dennis returns in a creepy fashion, which is very true to his character. The gang is talking about the doll, when all of a sudden we hear it talk. Well, we think we do. The camera actually pans right, revealing real life Dennis standing there accompanied with a jumpscare sound effect.

Dennis makes his remarks, Cindy argues that they shouldn’t let him in the gang, but they do. She leaves in a huff, and the episode ends with the original gang all back together. Dennis asks Mac if he’s gained weight, and we cut to the credits.

So, overall the episode felt very…forced. Of course, this could have been on purpose because Mindy Kaling was forced into the group as a replacement for Dennis, and the creators made the show feel like how the gang felt. But it doesn’t help that there were few laughs, and the sound quality didn’t seem to be the best.

It’s a good episode, it did it’s job, but I also don’t think it was at it’s best. Hopefully, the rest of the season does go above and beyond as Sunny is shown it is be able to do.

Travel tips!

10 Helpful Travel Tips

Have you ever left something really important at home while leaving for vacation, or not have enough room in your suitcase for clothes? Here are some useful travel tips to help you out.

1. Pack Light

Take half the clothes you think you will need…you won’t need as much as you think. Write down a list of essentials, cut it in half, and then only pack that!

2. Don’t fold your clothes flat, roll them in your suitcase

Do you ever run out of space while packing clothes? Instead of folding your clothes so they are flat, roll them, and you will see this method gives you so much more space.

3. Always have a backup plan.

It’s important to have a backup plan as we all tend to mess up sometimes. You could forget renting a rental car, but you thought you did. You could get lost while exploring, or not have any WiFi to call anyone. Traveling is a lot of work, don’t think to yourself that nothing will go wrong, because that’s just not true.

4. Plan ahead

Book flights and hotels 2-3 months in advance in case they end up getting booked. Also, it’s a lot cheaper if you don’t wait until the last minute.

5. Be prepared for the worst

Like I said, you never know what’s going to happen. Pack a flashlight and a basic first aid kit just in case. You or someone else could get hurt or the power could go out.

6. Be patient

Traveling takes a lot of time, especially in the airport. Those security lines are the longest, but just stay cool you’ll get there. There’s no need to rush, it won’t make you go any faster.

7. On travel days get everywhere early

As I said, the airport security lines are so long so you’ll need to plan out how long you think it will take to get through them, and when your flight is. It’s better to be there a little early and sit, then miss your flight because of a long line.

8. Don’t fall for the scam!!

Travel scams are very common in famous places, that’s how some people get their money. Be cautious of people coming up to you and offering you something for money. Since you’re not familiar to the area you could think it’s not a scam and makes sense, but don’t fall for it because it most likely is!

9. Check the weather ahead

Wherever you are going it’s most likely the weather is different, so check the weather ahead of time. This will help you to know what clothes you’ll need, like if you need a jacket and boots or tank top and shorts. Then you won’t freeze or be to hot.

10. Finally, wear sunscreen

This only applies to those traveling in the tropic areas and places where the sun can hurt you. It’s so important to wear sunscreen, most of us think it’s no big deal. The sun does so much damage to your skin if not protected from it, so do your skin a favor and wear sunscreen you don’t want melanoma.

Why are books usually better than their movie

By: Mateo Barrera

The movie version of a book usually is made after the book has had major success. This has happened to many books including the Harry Potter series, the Percy Jackson series, and the Maze Runner series to name a few.  All of these movies have been super successful, take Harry Potter for example, which grossed 7.7 billion dollars in 2012, after The Deathly Hallows Part 2 came out. However, a lot of movie versions of books don’t quite meet the expectations of the people who read the book. Here are some of the reasons that cause that.

The characters and their actors

One of the major parts of books is giving the basic description of a character, but also letting readers imagine how the characters look. However, an actor can’t always look exactly like the character in the book. For this reason readers will often believe that the movie will be an inaccurate representation of their favorite characters.

They change the original story

In some movies they change the original story to something else, add new things that never happened in the book, or cut scenes from the original story. This can either be good or bad, but in some cases it is bad. It’s bad because sometimes people want to see their favorite scenes from a book put onto the big screen, but then it turns out it has been cut out of the movie entirely. Sometimes when they add or cut things it creates plot holes in the story.

Characters thoughts

Probably the biggest reason for a book being better is the inclusion of a character’s thoughts. Books include thoughts to make characters’ actions make more sense, add extra detail to a character’s feelings or emotions, and also to make the story continue without just missing a bunch of important things. But in a movie, the inclusion of a character’s thoughts never really happens because it can ruin the pace of a movie and the mood, and make a movie really dull and boring. Because of this, you can really only tell a character’s emotions and feelings from their facial expressions, body language, and how they speak. This makes it hard to tell how a character is truly feeling.

All of these reasons usually end up making the original book better than their movie counterparts.

Top 5 fascinating things you didn’t know about ‘High School Musical’

According to TheTHINGS.com, there are 15 things about High School Musical that were hidden 10 years ago, and some fun facts you didn’t know. Here are the 5 things from the list that I felt were the most interesting, but for the entire list, click on this link: https://www.thethings.com/15-things-you-never-knew-about-high-school-musical/

  1. The movie wasn’t supposed to be called High School Musical. The title was just a placeholder because they weren’t sure what to name it, but they kept the name at the end of finishing up the first movie.
  2. Zac Efron didn’t sing Troy’s singing parts in the first movie. The sweet vocals from the first movie came from Drew Seeley who auditioned for Troy’s character. Seeley sang songs like “What I’ve Been Looking For” and “Get’cha Head In The Game” but Efron, the one who played Troy, sang parts of “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free”. The reason why Efron barely sang most of the songs was because his voice was too low for the parts. But in the next 2 movies, Efron was given all of the singing parts because his natural voice could work well.
  3. The snow at the beginning of the movie was actually potatoes. So when Troy and Gabriella first met, it was New Year’s Eve and snowing. It has been proven that it wasn’t snowing, and that it was flakes of potatoes after all. This wasn’t the first food product replaced as the real thing; in Pirates of the Caribbean, they used chocolate powder instead of dirt.
  4. Sharpay’s pink locker still exists since “High School Musical” used a real school to film the movie. The school they used in the show is real and is still operating today. The school is called East High, and it’s located in Salt Lake City, Utah, but what is fascinating is that Sharpay’s iconic pink locker is still there, and any student can have that locker each year.
  5. High School Musical 4 is coming out very soon, but there isn’t an exact date. This movie will be more about East High vs. West High and new characters may appear. One of them is Sharpay and Ryan’s cousin Campbell. Also, it is said that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens will, or will not, be on the same set. But it’ll still be interesting just like the last 3 movies.

Tokyo Sushi

Tokyo Sushi is an all you can eat restaurant that won’t break your bank. This sushi place has been talked about amongst many of our friends so we wanted to see if it was really worth it.

Tokyo Sushi hasn’t been around for very long, but they’ve already made such good business with their fair price, and good quality food. The restaurant itself is very dim lighted, almost calming and intimate. The interior design is far from traditional; it has a very modern, sleek look to it, having a very dark color scheme including: black, grey, and brown. The place is very spacious, I would say, with a majority of the seats being booths. It’s the perfect place for a date night with your significant other, or even a night out with your friends.

Now, since this is an all you can eat place, you can always order as much as you want, making sure to eat your money’s worth. They have many choices including, nigiri, sashimi, rice bowls, tempura, and much, much more.

Tokyo Sushi is a great place for people who have not tried sushi and want to try it. The restaurant has so many choices that are appealing to first timers, such as the spicy salmon hand roll, which is almost like a taco and very savory.

It’s best to have a side dish such as a rice bowl as well, so you can have something to eat on the side that is not raw or fishy, in case you don’t like the sushi you have previously eaten.

Eating sushi at first is a little surprising and intimidating if you aren’t used to the flavors, and especially if you haven’t had raw fish before. Because of this, it is best to stick to the simple rolls. The recommended sushi to try depends on if you have had fish before, and if you like it. If you have had fish before, then trying some salmon, or another fish that isn’t too extreme with taste, will help you adjust. Who knows, you may end up liking sushi.

If you haven’t had fish or don’t really like it, then it’s recommended that you try something very simple such as shrimp, or try the handrolls since the handrolls don’t just come with raw fish, but have many other foods in them as well. But, when you go to try new sushi, or to try it for the first time, it’s best to go with people who know about sushi, or just be a daredevil and do it with people who haven’t, and see how it goes.

Some of the things we ordered were eel fried rice, seafood udon, beef don, squid teriyaki, and eel nigiri. I have eaten sushi before and it is one of my favorite foods, so I already knew what to order. Our friend who tried it out for the first time had a few difficulties, like figuring out what to order and asking what certain foods were. When our food came, she was afraid to try them out.

I think first timers should try out small pieces first and go on from there. As someone who loves seafood, I can eat just about anything with fish, but those who aren’t used to the taste of fish should try out easy and non exotic food first. It was fun seeing my friend’s reactions to the food, and hearing her thoughts on how they tasted. If you haven’t tried sushi before, you should totally give it a try.

Album review: Pusha-T – DAYTONA

Since 2013’s My Name Is My Name, one has had the sense that Pusha-T is a genius rapper who has not been allowed adequate freedom as a solo artist. Of course, we know of his genius from his early days in Clipse, when he and his brother No Malice reinvented gangsta rap music with the Neptunes-produced Lord Willin’ and Hell Hath No Fury. But, since then, as a solo artist, Pusha-T has only shown flashes of the potential that he first showed as one half of Clipse in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the most notable of these being the Kanye West-produced “Numbers on the Board,” a mini-masterpiece which demonstrated the crucial fact that Pusha-T requires minimalist production to thrive. His cold elocution, deviously arrogant persona and dark ex-dealer rhymes are always painfully out-of-place on pop-rap anthems.

2015’s King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude was in many ways an improvement upon My Name Is My Name. So is DAYTONA, Pusha-T’s most recent venture, upon Darkest Before Dawn, and for the very same reasons; less bloated production, fewer appearances from second-rate GOOD Music artists like The-Dream, more experimentation, and an even shorter runtime. DAYTONA runs a meager 7 tracks and lasts hardly 21 minutes, but it accomplishes far more than any of the 90-plus-minute megamixes currently offered by Migos, Rae Sremmurd, and the like. Wholly produced by Kanye West, at least half of the credit is due to him. DAYTONA is an album of seven “Numbers on the Boards’s,” and it only further solidifies West’s reputation as the most innovative and important popular musician of the 21st century.

The album opens with “If You Know You Know,” a skeletal banger reminiscent of Yeezus which quickly explodes into ecstatic synths like “Father Stretch My Hands” on The Life of Pablo. “The Games We Play” and “Santeria” are darkly Latin-flavored beats based on guitar licks. The latter features a Spanish R&B interlude that goes over surprisingly well.

“Come Back Baby” is the hardest track on DAYTONA, with three verses consisting solely of a swelling bass-line and two hooks sampling The Mighty Hannibal’s “The Truth Shall Make You Free” without alterations. “What Would Meek Do?” is a conversation between Pusha-T and West about current drama over an eerie, energetic beat. What does Kanye have to say? “Poop, scoop! Whoop! Whoopty-whoop!” among other things. Suffice it to say, it goes over far better than West’s own “Ye vs. the People” with T.I., or “Lift Yourself,” for that matter.

DAYTONA closes with “Infrared,” which is proving to be the album’s most impactful track. Pusha-T brutalizes Drake, Lil Wayne and other enemies while simultaneously solidifying his reputation as the godlike gangster he’s claimed to be since “Dirty Money” in 2006. “The lyric pennin’ equal the Trumps winnin’ / The bigger question is how the Russians did it / It was written like Nas, but it came from Quentin.” “The only rapper sold more dope than me was Eazy-E / How could you ever right these wrongs / When you don’t even write your songs?” Drake was so offended that he fired back with the similarly excellent “Duppy Freestyle.” One can only hope this beef will produce more excellent tracks.

The only track on DAYTONA that feels slightly out-of-place is the slower and more luxuriant “Hard Piano.” Rick Ross offers one of his best verses, but the song still feels irredeemably unfinished. The “Maybach music” samples are delightful, but the “Santo Domingo” hook is utterly absurd and out-of-date; it sounds like a bad reject from the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sessions.

DAYTONA is the type of rap album Pusha-T (and the world) needs. It is brief, (though maybe too brief), raw (though maybe too raw), and experimental. Even the album cover, supposedly changed at the last moment to a photograph of the late Whitney Houston’s bathroom, is bold. Apparently, DAYTONA is simply the much-awaited King Push renamed for artistic reasons. If not, I hope that that album (or whatever Pusha’s next may be) will only continue the trend of more experimentation and individuality begun here. DAYTONA shows, finally and categorically, that Pusha-T is still capable of making a masterpiece in the contemporary era, if he can only work with his producers to polish his sound for a bigger and more substantial piece. Its success bodes well for Kanye West’s own next album, which contains seven tracks also and is supposedly out June 1st.
