What is ULA planning

By: Nereida Dominguez Remedios

Union Latina is a club where it represents Latin culture and also does fun activities and has fun performances.

Currently Union Latina (ULA) is preparing one of the two events that they host every year called Fiesta Latina.

Fiesta Latina is where grades 10-12 Spanish immersion classes choreograph dances so they can be shown during the last period of the day for students at the high school and some classes from the middle school. They also perform after school for the families and friends of the students, so they can see all the hard work they have done and effort they put into the performance .

Fiesta Latina shows all the different Latin cultures/dances and fun activities that Union Latina does every Wednesday after school.

During clubs/after school the board members give time for students to practice the fun activities and dances that are going to be performed.

Even though Fiesta Latina is a month away, the Spanish teachers are already letting the students choreograph and practice the dances that they are going to perform at the show.

During my experience of practicing, it is stressful but it is also super fun knowing that I’m able to show my culture, and different cultures similar to mine, during practice. I’m also able to see my friends and classmates have fun dancing and see everyone laugh and talk to each other.

During the after school performance there will be food trucks serving the most delicious food, and the performance will be at 5:30. During this time you are able to get your food and be able to get to your seat to watch the performance.

Everyone is welcome to watch the amazing performance Union Latina (ULA) will be presenting!

Fiesta Latina is on: April 17, with performances during 4th period and after school at 5:30.

How fashion icons have shaped style throughout the decades

By: Kate Tabor

The term fashion icon is used quite a lot, but what actually makes someone a fashion icon? Surely, everybody has their own opinion on what makes someone a fashion icon, but Google defines it as “a person whose unique and recognized style has a significant impact on fashion trends and culture…”.

Going off of that definition, my mind immediately goes to Marylin Monroe, one of the most popular and classic fashion icons of her day. Marylin Monroe broke barriers back in the 1950s, where fashion for women was often very restricted and modest. She created a whole new world of opportunities for how women present themselves to the world.

I’m sure at the time, Marylyn’s style was critiqued for its boldness just as much as it was praised, but she truly did shift women’s fashion in such a powerful way. It was the start of women being able to embrace their own body and femininity in what they wear. She’s classic, and her fashion marks a turning point for women in history.

Another woman that comes to my mind when talking about fashion icons is Princess Diana. Diana’s fashion is known for being simple and modern, but there’s also a bit of rebellion to it.  Being a part of the royal family, expectations were obviously set on how she dressed and presented herself, and she challenged that by wearing a pant-suit set once.

A lot of people still take inspiration from her looks, and admire her fashion for how she subtly gave messages through it. One of her most popular looks, known as the  “Revenge Dress” is often labeled that way due to how her husband, Prince Charles, confessed his infidelity on national TV the same night she wore the dress.

Both of these icons have changed women’s fashion since their times, but what about modern fashion icons?

Zendaya Coleman is one of today’s most influential fashion icons, and beloved by many. Even though she started as a Disney Channel star, Zendaya has moved on to much bigger things in her career, and is often always wowing critics and fans alike with her looks.

Zendaya is always making a statement with her fashion, and has even won the Council of Fashion Designers of Americas Fashion Icon Award. Her fashion sense is constantly changing and evolving, but one thing that I think makes it stand out more is that she doesn’t label it. Zendaya herself has stated that she doesn’t have a personal style, and I think that’s what makes it so good. She doesn’t put herself in a box of what fits her style and her look, she just wears what she wants, and it’s always amazing.

Girl Scout Cookies

We all know Girl Scout Cookies, and we all love them too. They’ve become a well known classic in the United States. They are available to be purchased in January through April every year, and without fail they are always in high demand. Every year, Girl Scouts sell approximately 200 million cookies to Americans, each box costing $6-7, and in total worth an estimated $800 million. It is the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world.

Aside from how much everyone loves buying the cookies, being a part of Girl Scouts is such a great thing for young girls. As of today, Girl Scouts of the United States has over 2 million members. Being a part of Girl Scouts helps young girls develop so many skills, like community engagement, confidence, leadership, and more. Selling Girl Scout Cookies provides great opportunities for practicing communication skills, managing money, and being part of a community.

Girl Scout Cookies were originally home baked by members with their moms, simply volunteering to be involved in the community. It wasn’t until a few years later, in 1917, when the first box of Girl Scout Cookies was sold. Ten years later, it became normalized for Girl Scouts to go door to door throughout a neighborhood to sell the cookies.

Nowadays, if you go out to a local grocery store during the spring, you’ll often see a Girl Scout Cookie booth. Typically a few young girls will be standing behind the booth while a few adults will be around for supervision as they sell out of cookies quickly.

Girl Scout Cookies remain very consistent. Especially by maintaining the consumers favorite flavors every year, like Caramel deLites, Thin mints, Adventurefuls, and my personal favorite, the Lemonades. Typically, you don’t see new flavors getting introduced.

Overall, Girl Scouts have made a huge impact across the United States in the past 100 years, and in a way, the cookies have brought so many people together. If you haven’t already gone out and bought a box, I highly recommend that you do! Not only would you receive a nice treat, you’d also be supporting the opportunities of so many young girls.

THE LAST FEELINGS

By: Christine Yang

Artist statement:

This artwork was made especially for a Personal Project. The artwork was created with the use of oil pastels, which I really enjoyed using and took me about 10 hours to finish.

I was really inspired by an oil paint artwork, “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh.

Even though I really want others to have their own interpretation of it, but for me, it’s about how a person you loved but they’re not in your life anymore, so you replay moments with them which makes you want to crave their presence. As you wait for them to return back into your life again, they’re slowly moving on, like fading away.

‘Prison Break’ review

By: Sasha Deans

*Warning: This review contains minor spoilers

I think ‘Prison Break’ is a great series that is definitely meant for people who enjoy more serious and intense shows. It’s not at all a fun and games type of show like something you’d see on Disney. Instead, it’s very realistic and maybe even scary realistic at times. There are also a lot of very sad and heartbreaking scenes that make you think about what really happens in high-security prisons.

The show does a good job of portraying the range of criminals in prison. Of course, the two brothers, Michael and Lincoln, have a unique story. But aside from them, you see inmates who have committed serious crimes like rape, murder, assassinations, and high-level theft. However, there are also people in there for lesser crimes, like carjackers. This variety makes the show very interesting because you get to learn each criminal’s backstory and why they ended up in prison.

One of the things I really love about Prison Break is how it shows the harsh reality of the American prison system. It makes you wonder what’s really going on in our government that we may not even know about. The show subtly reveals the dark side of the system, and it really opened my eyes to what could be happening behind closed doors.

Another huge theme in the show is the relationships between the characters. One of my favorites is the friendship between Michael and Sucre. They started off as cellmates in Season 1 but ended up becoming lifelong best friends who would do anything for each other. Their bond is really heartwarming to watch, especially considering the dark environment they’re in.

But the most powerful theme in the show is definitely family love. Michael spent most of his life resenting his brother Lincoln, but the moment Lincoln was sentenced to death, Michael did not hesitate to risk his entire life, career, and freedom to break his brother out of prison. It’s a perfect example of family over everything. You also see a similar bond between Lincoln and his son, LJ, who would do anything for each other.

I also really enjoyed the love stories in the show, like Sucre and Maricruz. Sucre literally escaped prison just to be with Maricruz and their daughter. Another powerful love story is Michael and Sara’s. Michael had to make extremely dangerous and life-threatening decisions just to protect Sara, showing how strong their love was.

The acting in Prison Break is absolutely amazing. It feels very realistic, and the suspense is heart-stopping. The show has a lot of action—like gunfights, car chases, aircraft escapes, bombs, and more. So, if you love high-action, intense shows, this is definitely one you need to watch.

Final Verdict:

I would give Prison Break a 5/5. It has everything—action, suspense, drama, romance, and shocking plot twists. It’s definitely not a lighthearted show, but if you enjoy a deep, serious, and realistic series, this is absolutely worth watching. It will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

You can watch on Netflix!

“X”

By: Daniel Kendle

“The accepted theory that the serpent is evil cannot be substantiated. It has long been viewed as the emblem of immortality. It is the symbol of reincarnation, or metempsychosis, because it annually sheds its skin…It was also believed that snakes swallowed themselves, and this resulted in their being considered emblematic of the Supreme Creator, who periodically reabsorbed His universe back into Himself.”

– Manly Palmer Hall

. . .

A small crowd had formed around the cutout, varying sizes of men and women clustered together, trying to peer at the thin figure. They chattered, a collection of the like-minded. Emrys watched them from across the convention hall.

The pop-up, a cheap plastic setup, was of some kind of video game character. He was clad in green, with metallic armor that segmented his arms from his chest, legs from thigh, and head from neck. A helmet rounded off the suit, giving off the impression of some kind of insect. In his hand was a sword – sword? Gun? Emrys couldn’t tell – that almost glowed, being a light blue with 2 separated, parallel blades. To the side, a small signpost read, “‘HALO: INFINITE 2: 2 INFINITE 2 HANDLE’ – COMING SOON TO GAMEPASS.”

Fans gawked; clearly, this character meant a great deal to each of them. A couple had pushed their stroller in a blitz to be first, where the pair were now taking photos of the pop-up with their baby, much to the ire of unamused attendees.

Emrys stroked his lanyard’s cloth, up and down, then back again. He felt the cool plastic, then warm weaving as he brushed his fingers over the letters “E3.” He was fairly anxious; his foot had fallen asleep despite constant tapping.

His brother was now 30 minutes late to arrive.

“Mr. Bach?” A curious voice came from behind him. Emrys turned to face an older man, somewhere in his 50’s. His hair was white, shirt, blue, and he wore a necklace similar to his, only with a gold trim. “I was told to expect your arrival for the tour.”

“Oh, uh,”  the boy said, quickly sneaking another look outside at cars and gulps, “yes, that’s me.”

“Wonderful. Please, if you’ll follow me – Microsoft’s conference will be beginning soon, and the rest of the group is getting…antsy.

Emrys nodded, and the man and boy started off toward the convention hall’s innards. The man’s sunken eyes occluded subtle thought, and Emrys ignored any attempt to vie for a conversation. They walked in silence, with the roar of surrounding guests replacing a dialogue.

            “…and we hope that, in today’s showcase, you’ll see the Power. The Power…” a green-shirted speaker said, “…of ‘X.’”

The thickly-packed crowd cheered. Lights flashed, then dimmed, and the stage was enveloped in dense smoke. Emrys and the other tour members smiled; this was it. The Microsoft presentation. It was E3 2037, and the company behind your favorite data encryption controversies was only moments away from announcing their newest console. The lights further dimmed, and a low murmur from the crowd became a raucous roar as the CEO of Microsoft, Mike Rosoph, strolled onstage. He gripped the microphone in one hand, pocketing the other. Clapping soon followed.

“Yes, yes, hello, my loyalists,” he chuckled, “and welcome to E3 2037. Haveth the dawn cometh soon?”

“Soon and well, master ‘Soph,” Emrys and the crowd repeated. They all did a gesture with their hands as if their digits were a game controller; a cult-like symbol.

”We here at So-er, Microsoft, have much to show y’all today. A fact indeed – as for Sony, well, that promise is merely a farce” The crowd laughed softly. Rosoph pulled out a clicker and clicked it a few times. See, using the clicker, he was able to catalyze his joke through audible response, letting the audience know when to laugh. See also the fact that Mike Rosoph was a narcissist.

“We’ve a good handful of exciting announcements for you chuckle-ducks. ‘DOOM: Song of the Damned,’ ‘Fallout 2020,’ and a new screenshot of the horses in ‘The Elder Scrolls VI,’” Rosoph said. Another cheer went up. It had been only months since a fan programmed ‘DOOM’ to run on a stretched piece of the muscle tissue of a pig; who knew what else the future had in store for the series?

“However,” Rosoph continued, “we also have, erm…another surprise in store. And hey, I suppose it’d be right to show y’all now, huh?” The crowd cheered again. The CEO pointed his now-glowing clicker at a black box hung above the stage. It began to descend, with more smoke wrapping around its edges.

“I ask this to everyone: do you have any guesses as to what this box means?”

A sea of heads turned. The cube was alien, really – it was so large, unlike anything they’d seen before. Murmurs spread, and a hand rose.

“Uh…er…a collaboration with N-Nintendo?” A lowly voice asked. Rosoph chuckled again, just as a trained sniper from the back of the auditorium readied a shot on the unfortunate man.

            BAM.

The CEO smiled tightly, brushing a bloody tooth aside with his shoe. He clasped his hands together.

“Unfortunately, no. Instead, the boys and I down in Silicon Valley have been tinkering around with some new space-age tech for you ruffians to fiddle with. What we have here today is, well, let’s just say a prototype for a soon-to-launch update for our Game Pass subscription.” The man shifted a bit in his spot during the last sentence.

The crowd roared. Rosoph clicked a couple times again, and the cube opened like a sideways music box. An even thicker, greener plume of smog seeped from the growing crack. A noxious stench wafted through the air.

“We all have hobbies, yes – and it just so happens that ours has its limitations. See, my team’s been trying to figure out how to best merge video games and reality together, to leave behind the screen, the VR headsets, all that jazz. And so, we here at Xbox Studios and Microsoft proudly present…Gamepass X.”

A shaded figure could now be seen from inside the box, seemingly tied up with rope and chains. It took Emrys a minute to adjust to the smoke, but once he did, he wished he could look away. He wished he could vomit.

            It was his brother.

A torpid knot in Emrys’ stomach curled, loosened, then curled again. The gamers around him paused in shock, then slowly began to clap. This spiraled; the applause evolved into a rhythmic clapping sensation. Rosoph clicked the clicker a final time, then threw it to an assistant offstage.

The boy began moving forward. He tried muscling his way to the front of the audience, now a standing mass that obscured most of the presentation.

“Do you want to see? Do you?!” Mike Rosoph screeched, electrifying the chorus before him. “See me, gods; be my acolyte!”

With that, the box closed around Emrys’ brother once again, with only a sliver of green light poking through. Screams echoed through the cube as the lights dimmed, and a spotlight remained on the shape, transfixed. People slowly quieted as the moans continued, until all remained in awe of the horror before them. Emrys was the only attendee still in motion, struggling towards the sight.

Ding! The cries stopped suddenly, and steam silently erupted from the box, unfurling once again. Emrys stopped in his tracks, startled. He was only a few feet away from the stage.

For a moment, everything stood still. The sun, the moon, and everything in between paused as onlookers watched the future turn and writhe. Then, a giant, green, raptorial leg reached high into the air, then slowly set back down onto the concrete below again. A skin-wrapped arm next, then a long, scythe-like tail. Visions of blood filled Emrys’ head as he began backing away.

Then, just before he turned to flee, he noticed a mark on the stretched skin of the newly-emerged bat-like wing.

            It was an X.

How to care for hedgehogs

By: Maya Song

Hedgehogs are considered to be exotic pets, thus the care for them needs to be understood before purchasing one. A pet hedgehog’s life span is usually 4-6 years but they can live up to over 8 years. Most hedgehogs are nocturnal so when you’re awake they’ll most likely be sleeping but there are a few species of hedgehogs that are diurnal.

Can hedgehogs even be house pets? While most of the United States thinks that is completely fine, the few states and areas that disagree are: Georgia, Hawaii, California, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and the five boroughs of New York City. Even though hedgehogs are not native to North America they have been becoming more popular as pets.

If you keep a pet hedgehog you need to make sure they have plenty of things to do to occupy themselves such as toys; items like balls, stuffed animals, and small cars are very common. Hedgehogs are naturally very curious animals and love to explore, so things like tunnels and tubes would also be a good idea. It must also be kept in mind that hedgehogs need exercise so a pet exercise wheel is highly recommended.

The hedgehog’s diet is very large so you need to be making sure everything you give your hedgehog is safe and healthy for them. A few examples of food for your hedgehog would be things like: cat food, dog food, meats, mice, insects, caterpillars, mealworms, earthworms, eggs, bananas, cherries, watermelon, fruit, berry, peaches, kiwi, vegetables, apple, broccoli, leafy greens, pears, and papaya. These foods are examples of what to feed your hedgehog on a daily basis. It is recommended that hedgehogs eat at least once a day with 3-4 teaspoons per serving.

If you choose to own a hedgehog you must be prepared in order to be successful. Making sure that the hedgehog has items to occupy itself with, food to eat, and making sure that it’s legal to own it should be considered. That being said, they are adorable, and worth the effort.

The history of Smokey the Bear

By: Grace Wright

Smokey the Bear started in 1941 in California because during World War II many of the able bodied men were off fighting. So, when wildfires started breaking out, there was no one to really fight against them; many communities had to fight them themselves or just let them burn. Protecting the national forests and other parts of the country became a big concern because many of these wildfires were damaging them.

People thought using this worry would help people find something else to focus on instead of the war and also that it would actually get people to help. So, they started the CFFP, Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention. They started posting different slogans like “Forest Fires Aid the Enemy” “Our Carelessness, Their Secret Weapon”. This helped people get motivated to help because they made it seem like the wildfires would make the US look weak, which would allow the war to come closer to home.

They did this for a while without a mascot until Disney came out with the movie ‘Bambi’. They got the rights to use the animal from the movie for a year to help their campaign. Once the year was up they would have to find a new animal. They soon decided that nothing would fit better than a bear. On August 9, 1944 Smokey the Bear was authorized by the Forest Service. They soon started making posters and his popularity became huge.

A couple of years later they soon had a real life Smokey the Bear mascot. During a wildfire in New Mexico a baby bear was found after getting burned in a tree. They took him to Santa Fe to hopefully recover. He soon took over the country and many people loved him. He went to the National Zoo in Washington D.C. to live until he died.

Smokey the Bear’s iconic saying “Remember only you can prevent wildfires” proved to be very useful. It stayed like this for a few decades until they found research that said that some wildfires actually are useful for certain types of forests, so they changed it to “Only you can prevent wildfires”.

Smokey the Bear is very popular to this day, you can find his saying pretty much anywhere. It is also very popular in smaller towns to have a sign that shows the fire hazard for the day and him standing with it. Overall, Smokey the Bear is a very iconic symbol and he did celebrate his 80th birthday in 2024.

Different kinds of hobbies

By: Fletcher Pike

Photo by Em Hopper on Pexels.com

To many, hobbies can be a fun way to express yourself by learning a new skill that gives you joy. However, you might not know where to start if you want to learn a new hobby. In this article, I will give you multiple examples of hobbies that you can try.

Art

Art is a popular kind of hobby that allows you to express your creative side. This can include things such as painting, sculpting, and drawing. Art can be a relaxing activity for anyone to try. Art comes in so many different forms, you can experiment with the different kinds of art that you can create. Art doesn’t always have to involve paint, ink, or lead. It also includes activities such as knitting, crocheting, or making jewelry. These are also great options if you don’t like the messier side of creating art.

Personally, I think that art is one of my favorite hobbies, and I love doing different kinds of artwork. I highly recommend this kind of hobby to anyone looking to explore their creative side.

Games

Though this hobby is a broad term, it can refer to both board games and video games. Learning a new type of game can be a fun hobby to do as it can help build strategic skills, or you can play completely for fun. Some board games include: chess, Battleship, checkers, or card games. I personally enjoy learning a lot of card games, as it can be fun to learn the different rules of the games. Video games have a nearly endless amount of different categories.

I recommend this kind of hobby to anyone wanting to incorporate their thinking and mental skills into their hobby more.

Sports

Sports is a very popular hobby, and is essentially available to everyone who wants to play. There are many different types of sports to choose from, but popular ones include: soccer, basketball, football, and baseball. Sports is a great hobby to try as there are many different kinds of sports to play, and it can help you stay physically active as well as being able to build communication skills with your teammates.

Music

Music is a great hobby to try, as learning to create or learn music can help improve several different skills. You can learn to play a new instrument, learn to sing, or even compose your own songs. Music is pretty similar to art in my opinion, as creating music itself can be interpreted as a form of art by combining creativity and emotion into the music.

Music is a fun hobby to try if you like listening to music or if you have ever wanted to sing or learn a new instrument.

Cooking / Baking

Creating food is a hobby that I highly recommend if you want to learn more about exploring the many different kinds of food.
