Climate change

Throughout history, the world’s climate has progressively changed. According to NASA, the earth has gone through seven cycles of glacial advancement and retreatment within the last 650,000 years. The cyclical event abruptly ended at the end of the last age, some 7,000 years ago, acting as a starting point for not only the modern climate era, but also of human civilization.

Satellites and other modern technologies are orbiting earth, and recording visual data regarding the world’s climate that enables scientists to observe the planet in a larger, holistic scale. Scientists have stated they’ve observed signals of climate change.

To further strengthen their hypothesis, scientists have drawn ice cores from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers to show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. These ice cores also show that in the past, large changes in climate have happened very quickly. According to these studies, scientists have concluded that, geologically-speaking, the climate changes we are experiencing now, have happened in tens of years, not in millions or even thousands, but within the last decade.Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snowfall in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades and that the snow is melting earlier in the year.

Much of the earth’s heat has been absorbed by the oceans. The top 700 meters, about 2,300 feet, of ocean have grown warmer by 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since the year 1969.

In response to the warming oceans, NASA’s Gravity and Recovery Climate Experiment show Greenland has lost as much as 60 cubic miles of ice per year between 2002 and 2006, and Antarctica has lost 36 cubic miles of ice between 2002 and 2005. In 2006, the AAAS, American Association for the Advancement of Science, reported, “The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society.”

Oceans also act as a sponge for carbon dioxide. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, 1712, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by 30 percent. This increase is the result of humans emitting significant doses of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, hence more carbon dioxide being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is rapidly increasing. The ocean is absorbing about 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year. The American Chemical Society stated in 2004, “Comprehensive scientific assessments of our current and potential future climates clearly indicate that climate change is real, largely attributable to emissions from human activities, and potentially a very serious problem.”

According to whitehouse.gov,  “The United States is leading global efforts to address the threat of climate change. Since 2005, the United States has reduced its total carbon pollution more than any other nation on Earth. Wind power has tripled, and energy from the sun has increased tenfold. President Obama has taken a series of common-sense steps to curb carbon pollution and other greenhouse gases through initiatives that drive energy efficiency, promote clean energy, and put in place the first-ever carbon pollution standards for power plants.” However, this progress may be halted or regressed due to president elect Donald Trump’s views and future actions on climate change, such as dismantling the Paris agreement, which is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, (UNFCCC), dealing with greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance starting in the year 2020.

Despite all the physical and scitenfic evidence of global climate change, 46% of the worlds population don’t believe global climate change is occurring. However, when given this evidence by NASA, and observing the visuals of the worlds climate, I find it hard to believe that anybody can believe current global climate change can be a hoax. According to pew research.org, “A global median of 51% say climate change is already harming people around the world, while another 28% believe it will do so in the next few years.”

Let’s not let our arrogance harm our neighbors and wild species that rely on the ocean, and other natural lands. Let’s combat this progressive regression of natural land masses and animals. To do so, we can use less energy; install a solar panel, turn the lights for other technologies off when they don’t have to be used, use energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs, recycle, reduce waste, etc. In a world of consumers, we’re not only consuming goods and products, but also the natural world around us.

HPSH Student Election 2016

On Tuesday, November 8th, we had our HPSH presidential election. 43 other Saint Paul Public Schools also participated in a mock election.

As students of HPSH, we were able to vote for more than just the presidential nominees. On the ballet, students voted for who they wanted to be President but also who they wanted to represent them as a U.S. Representative, State Representative, and State Senator along with a few other things including whether or not state politicians should set their own salaries.

All  students participated in the election. During students’ social studies classes, they were brought down to the library to sign in and fill out their ballets. The next day, during the afternoon announcements, they announced the school results. Hillary Clinton won the presidential election by 70%, Betty McCollum won as U.S. Representative, Dave Pinto won as State Representative and Richard Cohen won as State Senator. HPHS also voted no, they didn’t think state politicians should set their own salary.

Student elections in schools is a good way to get kids used to the voting process. It also helps them understand that voting is a privilege that we have as citizens of the United States. Next election, almost every Highland student, that is a Senior right now, will be able to officially vote.

Dakota Pipeline protest

About an hour south of Bismarck, North Dakota, protests against the production of a new oil pipeline through Native tribal land is being countered. Self-proclaimed “water protectors,” and supporters of the Standing Rock Tribe, have set up camp on the land that was acquitted to the tribe under a 19th-century treaty. Accompanying the the supporters on this land are police officers, decked out in riot gear, that have arrested a total of 117 protesters in the quiet state of North Dakota.

A month ago the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers applied for permits that would grant them access to install a pipeline across the Missouri River, which the Standing Rock Tribe stated to be a “high risk that culturally and historically significant sites will be damaged or destroyed.” They were also concerned about possible damage to the supply of drinking water.

According to the Huffington Post,  “The tribe asked for a temporary injunction against construction.” However, in early September, a federal judge denied the injunction, and ordered the construction to proceed.

This ruling sparked an outrage amongst tribal land conservationists, beginning a long protest. Now the protesters are requesting the entire construction of the $3.8 billion pipeline be stopped, and placed on a different route, rather than the original route, spanning from North Dakota to Illinois, carrying 500,00 barrels of crude oil a day.

Due to a significant number of pipeline-related incidents in recent years, the people living on this land are apprehensive about another pipeline being built on their sacred ground. Doug Hayes, a staff attorney at the Sierra Club told the Huffington Post, “These pipelines are often seeping or leaking in small places, and we don’t have any way to detect them. These are the types of concerns the tribes have, and they’re, frankly, very well-founded.”

As of Friday, November 4th, the U.S. department of Justice, the Department of the Army, and the Department of the Interior announced a “voluntary pause” on all construction within 20 miles of Lake Oahe, a lake the pipeline would be built under.

The joint statement from the departments states, “The Army will not authorize constructing the Dakota Access pipeline on Corps land bordering or under Lake Oahe until it can determine whether it will need to reconsider any of its previous decisions regarding the Lake Oahe site under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) or other federal laws…In the interim, we request that the pipeline company voluntarily pause all construction activity within 20 miles east or west of Lake Oahe.”

As of this writing, there is still a protest going on. Even though the government has issued the injunction around Lake Oahe, they have still not agreed to meet tribal demands.

Dia de los muertos (Day of the dead)

Halloween is something most of us look forward to in the fall. From the costumes, to trick or treating until midnight, or binge watching your favorite horror films until 3am. It’s a holiday celebrated around the world and in many different ways too. El dia de los muertos happens to be one of those celebrations, and it also happens to be one of the biggest celebrations in honoring the dead.

Celebrated from November 1st to November 2nd, El dia de los muertos has become one of the oldest Mexican traditions celebrated. Originally dating back to the Aztec Empire traditions, it’s a two day lively celebration that honors the dead with large festivals, lively celebrations, parties, food and drinks. The days are meant to honor loved ones who’ve passed. These days are known as All Souls Day and All Saints Day.

It is belived that at midnight on Halloween the gates of heaven open and awaken the deceased children (angelitos) and allow them to spend the entire day with their families during this time. Then on November 2nd the spirits of the adults wake up from their eternal sleep and come down to enjoy the festivities prepared for them. You’d often see skulls, skeletons, marigolds, traditional food and drinks on the people’s graves or on their alters to honor the dead. These offerings are believed to please the dead and in return bring their families luck.

Fall 2016 fashion trends

For those who like to keep “in style,” follow the trends, or are wondering what to get next time you go shopping, this article is for you. From fabric to footwear, the fashion is always changing with a few classic styles continuing to stay relevant from year to year. The colors of the changing leaves continue to be the ideal clothing colors for fall wear, with most bright colors being retired for the year.

Specifically, Fall 2016 is all about cool fabric, alternative streetwear with a twist, and some similar styles from last year – including faux fur and layering. Below you will find examples of the hottest fashion trends currently.

The Color Tan

Tan is in! Any shade, any piece of clothing, any accessory, the subtle color ironically adds a pop of color to a neutral, sleek look.

Bomber Jackets

Bomber Jackets are short, cropped, and typically zip-up or have buttons. Stores are selling them in a variety of colors and most that are in style now have a shiny/sheer quality to tie together the smooth style.

Knit Sweaters

They are making a comeback! In a variety of colors, patterns, and lengths, knit sweaters have been all over the runway. The revived style is now being paired with almost anything but specifically skirts or denim and thigh high suede boots.

Bodysuits

Bodysuits are the one of the biggest trends of the year. They are shirts/tanks/sweaters with a snap attachment underneath the crotch to keep the shirt in place and give a clean, tucked in look without having to re-tuck and fix lines/bulges every time you stand up like most regular shirts when tucked in.

Satin

Designers this year created a different take on satin. Originally used for things such as blouses, slips and robes, the material is being used for other items of clothing, including pants, to create a unique looks.

Knee/Thigh High Boots

Knee and thigh high boots are a fall essential, providing style and warmth. This year the material of boots are expanding to things like velvet and suede in a variety of colors. They are used to tie several looks together such as denim, dressed, oversized hoodies, and more.

Chokers

Chokers are making a comeback as well. From black fabric to diamond studded, chokers have made appearances at almost every red carpet this year. The make a statement and are a girl’s new favorite accessory.

Velvet Everything

Quite possibly the biggest fashion trend of 2016 is velvet. The eye catching fabric has been used to create any and every piece of clothing at accessory. It provides anything from a goth to chic vibe depending on what color it is and can be paired with other fabrics or accessories to give a dressed up or casual look.

TV shows

Are these T.V. shows worth the hype?

The X Files:

The X Files is a show that started in the 1993, and is still playing today. This T.V show is a sci-fi thriller that follows the lives of two FBI agents, Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. These two agents are best known for their work on cases that showed signs of non-human forces at play, aliens, god, monsters, ect. While agent Mulder was a strong believer in such forces, agent Scully had her doubts.

Now that you know what the show is about you may want to know is it really worth watching? Well we are here to tell you YES!! This show is definitely worth watching. In this show everything is real and committing crimes from God to werewolves to aliens to psychics and much more. The X Files brings to light many thing that you may or may not believe in; whether you do or don’t, in this show, it does exists, which is why it’s so good.

This show combines real world work like the FBI, with extraordinary phenomenons like shape shifters. The X Files is thrilling, funny and a bit steamy and romantic all at the same time. If you have never seen The X Files or are contemplating watching it, then our suggestion to you is GO FOR IT, you won’t be sorry and if you are, well then we don’t know what to tell you.

Another great thing about this show is that it has an abundance of seasons, so you won’t watch it super quickly. The X Files is a show that is 100% worth watching.

Scandal:

Scandal is another interesting show that began in the April of 2012. The show revolves around a character by the name of Olivia Pope. Pope is a former White House Communications Director who starts her own organization to solve the crises of the wealthy and well known. Olivia and her team of gladiators are so good at what they do that people hurry to them, before the police. Olivia can bury someone’s deepest secrets and ultimately solve any chaotic problem placed in her path.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this series is the dirty political vendettas among the people of Washington D.C., along with the continual backstabbing that comes with them. The series is undoubtedly alluring and quite addictive. If, and only if, you’re prepared for a road of enormous secrets and uncanny events, Scandal is the show to watch.

Gossip Girl:

As the show that gave actress Blake Lively her rise to fame, Gossip Girl (2007-2012) has gotten an array of reviews from its audience, and is labeled by many as a “must watch” show. The series centers on the socialites of the Upper East Side of New York, following the scandalous lives of Serena Van Der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Nate Arichbald, Dan Humphrey and fan-favorite Chuck Bass.

Going into the show, we expected plain, annoying rich kids arguing over popularity, but was greeted with a much different tale. We can’t reveal too much, but, the twists and turns make the seemingly boring plot interesting. With several different storylines regarding each character, it’s hard to get bored of the same old thing.

The comedy throughout, gives watchers a break from the intense hardships the group faces. We are into binge watching shows, as it takes a lot to keep us interested, but Gossip Girl had us staying up all night waiting for the next ambush. We would highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a Netflix binge session.

A.C.C. plans for Hmong New Year

Every year, Highland Park Senior High’s after school club Asian Culture Club (A.C.C.) has a tradition of showcasing Hmong New Year. The club creates performances to inform the audience about what Hmong New Year is like, and gives views of what Hmong culture is like overall. The whole showcase is mostly run by students. This year, the club is taking a new turn on what they usually do.

The positions for Hmong New Year is the same as every other year: there will be different emcees to inform what performance is up next, there will be a fashion show displaying different types of Hmong clothes that students own, there will be a song sung by a student in Hmong, and there will be a  traditional Hmong dance that will be performed by girls.

The new turn that A.C.C. is taking this year, is doing a play. Stepping out of their comfort zones, A.C.C. has decided to make a play informing the audience of why, and how, Hmong New Year is celebrated in a new and unique way.

A.C.C. has been preparing for Hmong New Year for a couple of months now. Groups are separated into doing their own thing for preparing. Dancers will go to dance practices and rehearsals. The decoration crew decorates the auditorium and makes flyers. The fashion show crew and tech crew have meetings to figure out how they will perform. Actors and actresses will figure out the script for the play. Each board member is in charged of each different group.

The showcase will be in the auditorium on November 17th, during 6th hour. If students want to watch the performance, they should inform their 6th hour teacher about the performance. Otherwise, anyone else is invited to go and support A.C.C. with their Hmong New Year showcase.

Highland Park Senior High School Student & Staff Experience

Ever since freshman year, I have learned many things about Highland Park Senior High and have met lots of teachers who work hard to provide the right education for all students of the school.

Highland Park Senior High has grown into a bigger and broader place for students of different ethnicities and cultures to come and be a part of a student body where you meet new people and experience all sorts of new things.

There are many teachers in the school that have been around for quite some time, and all of them work with the students to help them in any way be successful and confident in school.

I talked to one teacher who has been at Highland Park Senior High for nearly a decade

Kathryn Menke:

I am a teacher here at HPSH – I currently teach Health but have also taught Human Geo, World History and Health Careers. I have been teaching at HPSH approximately 10 years. I appreciate the community here at HPSH.  I admire the dedication, commitment, hard work, and willingness by staff, students, families, and administration to work together to create a strong, successful, and supportive environment here at HPSH for all.”

Students of Highland Park Senior High are very polite and friendly when meeting others, and lots of people meet mostly through the various clubs and activities Highland Park has to offer to its students. One thing that people suggest when in high school is to get involved

, and meet new people. For me, I have done just that because I have met lots of teachers who I get along with very well outside of class, and friends who I met during my freshman and sophomore year. I’ve been getting involved with many new things since freshman year like archery club, and FFA, and Robotics, etc.

As a junior, I have experienced many things at Highland Park Senior High, and I still have a lot to do before senior year, but I am glad to have been involved in lots of clubs and activities throughout my time so far in high school.

SPPS school start times

During a school board meeting on November 1st, of this year, the St. Paul Public School’s (SPPS) administration presented a plan to change the school start times of most secondary schools in the SPPS district. The current start times for most of the secondary schools in Saint Paul is 7:30 am. The proposed plan would change all secondary schools, who start at 7:30, to 8:30, an hour later. This would also result in the changing of end times at secondary schools from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

The board is scheduled to vote on the motion to change times on November 15th. This motion would take full effect in the 2018-19 school year. The change would have a large impact on students, teachers, and parents in the SPPS system.

This new system could have a few benefits. One advantage is that it could increase productivity, due to the fact that it would supposedly allow for more sleep for students. Studies show that when students get less than 8 hours of sleep, they have a much higher chance of developing depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Also, when students sleep for longer each night, they are much less likely to be involved in criminal behavior, or take part in the use of drugs. In theory, if the start time is moved back, students would have higher grades, they would have better mental and physical health, and would be more likely to make more logical decisions throughout the day.

As this motion proposes later start times for secondary schools, primary education would in fact see earlier start times. According to the SPPS website, most elementary schools are getting a reduction of start times by about an average amount of 45 min. Schools such as Horace Mann, Hamline Elementary, and Highland Park Elementary would have a school day from 7:45 am till 2:15 pm under this proposal. An issue that is presented by doing this would be family routines. With younger children getting out earlier than their older siblings from school, there might not be anyone to watch them if both parents work. While after school child care is available like EDL or Discovery Club in some schools, lots of families won’t be able to afford these necessities.

Another consequence of the start times changing is the end times changing too. With a lot of students who do after school activities that usually take about 2 hours, they would get home at 5:00 pm which is fairly late in the day. Getting home this late gives students less time to do their school work, which results in them staying up later. By changing these times, students truly get the same amount of sleep as they did before, but will feel more stress to finish their homework late at night.

This change in start times at HSPH has it’s advantages, but it also has many disadvantages as well. We will have to wait till November 15th when the board votes on the motion.

The Space Between Us review

We all love going to the movie theater to enjoy a good movie, some popcorn and spending time with people you like, even though you do have to be quiet during the movie. Evelyn, a couple of our friends, and I had the great opportunity of being able to see an advanced screening of The Space Between Us directed by Peter Chelsom.

This movie is about a boy named Gardener, who was born on Mars, who starts talking to a 16-year-old in Colorado named Tulsa. They have an online friendship until Gardner finally gets the chance to go to earth. While he is on his way to earth, he stops talking to Tulsa because there is no way to contact her. She thinks his story is crazy because she doesn’t believe he’s really from Mars.

Once they meet their connection only grows. While Gardener is having the time of his life on earth scientists discover that his organs can’t withstand the atmosphere and he has to go back to Mars. He and Tulsa are on the run from the scientists so he doesn’t have to go back.

While they are on the run from the scientists, they are also trying to find Gardener’s dad, because all he has of him is a picture, and his mom is dead.

“I really enjoyed the movie, it was romantic and cute. I also hated it because it made me cry!” said our friend Michael.

“I liked it because it showed how just because someone is completely different from you that doesn’t mean you just deny them.” said Manuel Perla.

Evelyn and I talked about our thoughts and we really enjoyed it. We both liked how you kinda knew what was going to happen, but it turned out to be something completely different, which was good. We both enjoyed the movie and we both cried.

Overall, we all really enjoyed this movie and would definitely recommend it to anyone! Make sure to check it out on December 16th 2016 when it’s out in all movie theaters.
