Taylor Swift Debut Album

By: Rose Ramadan and Thea Berg

This article, which examines one of the greatest musicians to exist, will discuss Taylor Swift, her least-listened to album, as well as the details and opinions around it.

Taylor Swift’s debut album, which has 780 million Spotify streams, has received the least attention. That is around 4.3 billion fewer streams than the Taylor Swift album with the highest listening volume which is her album ‘Lover’. Even though other albums have a lot more streams, this is not surprising.

Taylor’s debut album, which is also her first, doesn’t contain many hits or the most well-known songs. This album was also one of her only country ones. The most played song, “Our Song,” was a huge hit in the late 2000s but is now virtually unknown to listeners of contemporary music. This album consists of 11 songs and is a total of 40 minutes long. Each song is around 3 minutes long.

In 2004, at age 14, Taylor Swift signed a music publishing deal with Sony/ATV, which made her the youngest signer in the company’s history.

In 2006, she then signed with Big Machine Records and she scored her first top 40 with the song “Tim McGraw”.

Taylor Swift moved to Nashville Tennessee when she was 14 years old which led her to release her debut album 2 years later. She released ‘Debut’ on October 24, 2006, when she was 16 years old.

Liz Rose, an experienced song writer co-wrote 7 out of the 11 songs on the debut album. Her first hit-single that was released on ‘Debut’ – “Tim McGraw” – was one of the songs co-written with Liz Rose.

Taylor Swift did not go on an individual tour with her debut album, but she went on a 6-month country music radio tour in 2006, and she was an opener during 2006-2007. She opened for other country music artists and she became more well known. She was an opening act for Rascal Flatts in 2006, George Strait in 2007, Kenny Chesney in 2007, Brad Paisley in 2007–08, and she opened for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s joint tour in 2007.

The song “Tim McGraw “ is about a personal experience from when she dated a senior in high school during her freshman year. Once he moved away, she was inspired to write it. The song was funny and cute to him, but not to his new girlfriend who wasn’t necessarily a fan of Taylor. This song means a lot to Taylor which is why she made it the first track on her album.

On this album, a lot of the other tracks spoke to different listeners. Many feature lyrics that are profoundly moving, such as “Tied Together with A Smile.” Many listeners may give into their pain thanks to this song, which eliminates the need for them to pretend their troubles don’t exist. This song may touch the emotions of many listeners and maybe alter the way they perceive their own reality.

“Mary’s Song (Oh My My My)” is a wonderful song and love story about two lovers growing up together, getting married, and taking place in a country setting. Many listeners believe that it is the most underrated song on this album. It is well regarded and a really pleasant listen. The song is worth listening to and might even engage you in her music, especially her country music.

‘Taylor Swift’ was a sleeper success in the United States. It debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart, dated November 11, 2006, and within the first-week had sales of 40,000 copies.

Though we covered this album on a small-scale, there are still many more songs that are highly praised by fans and listened to everyday. This album, though her least listened to album, is one of the cutest and most underrated albums in the history of Taylor Swift lyrics.

YDSC 2022 Nationals story

By: Joseph Nelson

Tearing a remote control drone around a series of obstacles in a race against the best pilots in the nation can be pretty nerve-wracking. Now imagine those obstacles are the accumulated Golden Gloves, Cy Youngs, and Silver Sluggers of the two-time World Series Champion Minnesota Twins.

That was the scene May 1st, 2022, at Truly On Deck – the elite clubhouse fan space at the Twins’ Target Field. Drone racing. At a baseball stadium?

The Youth Drone Sports Championships was pleased to have the Twins host their second annual National Championships, featuring 19 of the nation’s most elite drone pilots, under the age of 18, facing off head to head. It is a brand new sport taking shape and making history amid the trophies of one of our nation’s oldest.

These young pilots came from all across America to fly against the best of the best with their drones. Nationals was the place to be to make a name for yourself in this very young and growing sport, with everyone flying for the title of 2022 National Champion.

But how did we get here? How did this young sport come to be? And how do you race drones?

First-person-view (FPV) drone racing is the child of video gaming. Pilots put on goggles that connect to a camera centered on the drone allowing them to see what their drone sees. These drones aren’t bigger than a deck of cards and weigh no more than one ounce, making them agile enough to rip around race courses like a hummingbird. Imagine getting to be one of the pilots in ‘Star Wars’ attacking the Death Star, but doing so safely indoors without fear of injury.

Apple Valley hosted the first ever YDSC event in 2019 (before it was called the YDSC). The home flyers faced St. Louis Park in the first ever Minnesota State High School Drone Racing Tournament, which saw tiny drones built by students pushed to their limits on a course through Apple Valley High School’s expansive atrium. St. Louis Park soared to the first ever state team title, while Apple Valley 11th grader Andrew Martin (pilot name “AND E”) was crowned the first individual state champion.

Continuing to pivot with the pandemic, the YDSC added pilots around the country all competing online in the simulator. When vaccines made in-real-life (IRL) racing possible again, they held their first National Championship event at the Mall of America in June of 2021 where Apple Valley sophomore Cody “Viper” Anderson narrowly beat senior Haven “Vanadium” Gurka from Phoenix, Arizona to become the YDSC’s first national individual champion.

Fast forward to Spring 2022 with new stars emerging in a combined season of simulator and IRL racing. Apple Valley senior Brock “BRO F” Martin won the simulator individual crown and then followed in his older brother Andrew’s flight path, taking the latest Minnesota State individual title, racing through the big gym at Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield.

YDSC 2022 Nationals Story

That set up the YDSC’s return to Target Field for their 2nd Annual National Championships event, again made possible by the innovators at NCAT who support all of the STEM skill building happening in this exciting new tech sport.

At the end of the bracket, four pilots remained, Reigning National Champion Cody “Viper” Anderson (11th grade), his Apple Valley teammate Brock “BRO F” Martin (12th grade), Lakeville North’s Jack “Happy” Postlewaite (9th grade) and Joe “Boomer” Nelson from St. Paul Highland Park (10th grade).

When the rotors stopped turning, Viper retained his YDSC national title, outflying Happy who finished strong in second. Boomer followed close behind in third, and BRO F was fourth after experiencing technical difficulties that drone pilots know all too well.

Viper will be flying to keep the national crown, only he has worn, for one more year before he is bumped up to the collegiate level. That’s where his teammate BRO F is headed to fly with his brother AND E. Meanwhile, Boomer and Happy and a cast of other contenders will be aiming for Viper like Vader chasing Skywalker.

Do AIs tell of generated tales?

By: Hoaseng Thao

What began with curiosity and a little boredom, ended with hundreds of texts and paths being generated by Artificial Intelligence all because of a single prompt being entered. A couple of weeks ago, from the date of this article, I found myself bored out of my mind as I had little to no homework given to me. One day, while scrolling through YouTube I found a video of a YouTuber and his friend interacting with an AI, but the most interesting thing about their interaction was that they were playing out a story generated by a prompt they wrote for the AI to understand. My curiosity got the better of me and I decided that I might as well try this AI thing out.

I scoured the internet in search of an AI chatbot that was free to use, but in reality I just typed in “AI Chatbot Free” on the google search bar. After a few minutes searching for an AI chatbot, I found a website called Beta.Character.AI, a website where people created their own AI chatbot for anyone to use for free. One thing that caught my eye with this website was the large variety of AI chatbots that you can choose from: you can choose to talk to historical people like George Washington or Napoleon, you can also interact with video game characters like Master Chief from the ‘HALO’ series or Mario from Nintendo, etc. There are no limits to what you can do on this website.

I have two examples of what you can do with an AI chatbot. The first example is me playing as a fictional country I created in @monkeys’s ‘country simulator’ chatbot. The second example is me chasing a pigeon in @Button_Quail-22’s pigeon chatbot.

I decided to begin my journey with @monkeys’s country simulator, I started the story of my fictional country with the text:

My fictional country is called the Federal States of the Ustovan Union, we are covering the Kamchatka Peninsula. My population is 10 million people and we are using the dollar as our currency. We are a democracy that has been created after the fall of the Soviet Union. The year is 2000, Chechnya was annexed back into Russia and it looks like we’re next.

Immediately after I entered the prompt, I was told by the AI that it seems like Russia was looking to annex my country. This was a big deal, so as a democratic country I decided to ask my people their opinion of Russia’s aggression towards us. The AI wrote back to me that the people were worried about an invasion but the AI also told me that the Russians delivered a letter saying that my country will be “annexed in 4 days”. I responded back to the Russians saying “get off my peninsula”, they responded with “an army of 300,000 soldiers at my border”.

The next few minutes of my story was me trying to defend my country while repeatedly asking for foreign aid, the foreign aid never came. After a few minutes I had fended off a major attack. I was later told that the United Nations was asking for permission for an intervention, one that I accepted immediately. The UN intervened and my country lives for another day.

After saving my country from being annexed, I decided to take a slow approach to AI by talking to @Button_Quail-22’s pigeon bot. I wanted to make this experience a bit comedic so I decided to write down the prompt: “I chased the pigeon because it stole my hat”.

As I chased the winged rat it began to mock me at every turn. One time I had chased the pigeon towards a tall building where the pigeon flew to the top of the building before saying I can’t reach them, so, in a fit of anger I decided to grab a pair of plungers and climb up the building, but as I climbed up the building the pigeon, pooped on my face.

This story would soon become the start of the Pigeon War, a war where I am constantly harassed by a pigeon every time I enter the park. I would win some battles and the pigeon would win some, but in the end there were no winners and I had to sign a peace treaty with the winged rat.

In the end, I had a blast generating these stories with the AI chatbots because there were no limits to what you write down for the AI. If you are bored out of your mind and need something to write about, I think it’s best to look into beta.character.ai if you are bored out of your mind or want to experience talking to AI for the first time.

If you want to try out the AI chatbots of beta.character.ai, please visit the official AI chatbot website: https://beta.character.ai/

What to do over spring break

By: G. Johnson

Spring break is approaching fast and a lot of us are looking for something to do. This year spring break is April 1st to April 9th. We go back on Monday the 10th. That’s 9 days of break this year.

A lot of people don’t know what to do over break since it’s usually still cold, but I think it’s a great time to be productive and also have fun. If you’re looking for something productive to do you can clean, catch up on school work, or go through your closet and get rid of things you don’t need. This is good because you are cleaning and getting ready for summer – which is actually closer than we all think. Some other productive things you can do is work extra hours if you have a job. This would be great because you would make some extra money over the break.

If you’re looking for something fun to do over spring break here’s some ideas. You could, of course, hang out with your friends or family, cook or bake something, go on a day trip somewhere, go to the mall with friends, go for a walk or even do some winter activities for the last time like sledding, skating or skiing.

If you’re looking for something more spring friendly you could get outside, go for a hike by the river or walk around one of the nearby lakes. The weather might be a bit cold but it will be nice to be outside after the long winter.

If you’re looking for some indoor activities you could always rewatch your favorite TV show or movie, or watch a new one.

All of these things will hopefully help you have an enjoyable and fun spring break. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a good spring break!

Who I would cast for the upcoming movie: ‘It Ends With Us’

By: Mya Olson – Williams

As many book lovers know, an announcement was recently made about the cast list for the film adaption of Colleen Hoover’s popular novel, ‘It Ends With Us’. It’s caused lots of controversy and received much criticism. Casted as the main characters, Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid, are Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. Although both are great actors, here’s who I would cast for the main roles, as well as the others.

Lily Bloom – Elle Fanning

Lily Bloom has an innocent, sweet, and delicate character. Elle Fanning shows that in her appearance and voice. Lily is a natural redhead and also quite young in the book. Elle is extremely close in age, just one year older. If the actress playing Lily was older, that could change people’s perception of the plot and character development. Elle also looks amazing with red hair, so much so that it looks very natural. Although Blake pulls off the new hair color, you can tell that it’s dyed.

Ryle Kincaid – Theo James

In the novel, Ryle comes off as this intimidating, powerful, and uptight guy. Theo James has a defined resting face that can almost give you chills. He has a soft and sweet smile, but also a straight face that makes me a little bit uneasy. That’s how I imagine Ryle to be, someone with deceiving looks. I bet Justin Baldoni can totally play his character, but he looks super sweet and gentle, somewhat unlike Ryle.

Atlas Corrigan – Dylan Minnette

Atlas Corrigan is the definition of a gentleman. He cares about his loved ones very much, and protects them with everything he can. Dylan usually plays sweet and innocent characters in movies and TV shows, which is why I think he’d fit Atlas’ character perfectly. He’s really good at wearing his heart on his sleeve while acting, and that’s one of the most important things needed from the actor who plays Atlas.

Allysa – Sarah Hyland

Allysa is your stereotypical fun, outgoing, gossip loving, supportive best friend. She’s always encouraging Lily to do what’s best for herself and have fun at the same time. I wanted to find an actress who resembles my vision of what Allysa looks like in my head, and she is exactly that. Sarah Hyland looks just like she’s fun and confident, like Allysa.

Marshal – Joel Courtney

Marshal is super funny and sweet. He’s the guy who makes you laugh when you need it after a rough chapter in the book. Joel Courtney is the exact same way in the movie ‘The Kissing Booth’. He plays a great friend and a fun, loving guy, which I think is absolutely perfect for Marshal’s character.

Although I’m sure everyone casted for this movie was chosen for a reason, these are who I imagine as a cast for the main characters. I can’t wait for the real cast list to come out, and see if the movie does justice to the book!

If you are worried about potential allergen in Girl Scout cookies, or have other questions about the ingredients of Girl Scout cookies, you can go to GirlScoutsRV.org where you can find more details on the ingredients of Girlscout cookies.

The money from Girl Scout cookie sales goes to the troop you buy the cookies from, and funds all of their activities for the rest of the year until the next cookie season. This money is what allows Girl Scouts to do fun activities like horseback riding, arts and crafts, skiing, attending engineering workshops, and more. The money they get from cookie sales allows Girl Scouts to learn and experience more things without having to worry about the cost of things like equipment, or activities.

This year’s Girl Scout cookie season goes from February 17th to March 26th, so if you want to buy cookies make sure to keep an eye out for cookie booths, or head online to buy yourself a few boxes of cookies.

Teapot tips

By: Violet Hirman

In the past, tea was a reason to get-together daily, and was a huge part of so many cultures. Today, it still is for some. But a lot of knowledge and practice has faded into the background, obscuring the countless medicinal and mood-boosting benefits of tea.

Studies have shown that the majority of Americans don’t own a teapot or kettle, and that those who do don’t use them daily. Caffeinated coffee has taken the country by storm and replaced tea as the staple energy drink. There are several replacements for coffee in the tea industry that offer a natural energizing alternative.

One word. Matcha.

Matcha can be found on its own for making smoothies and drinks, even baked into pastries. It’s also a common ingredient in generic green tea, which you can find cheap at any grocery store.

Now, most people don’t like it because of the bitter aftertaste, but it’s easily sweetened with a little bit of honey.

Some other teas containing caffeine are chai tea (my favorite), black tea (also known as English Breakfast tea), white tea, purple tea, and oolong tea.

Natural energy isn’t the only benefit of tea, however. Chamomile, for example, is great for a restful sleep, and you can drink a cup before bed to help with sleep quality. Peppermint tea is helpful in easing stomach aches and digestion, and the Echinacea flower can be made into tea to shield against colds and fevers.

Tea ingredients can—and often are—combined with others possessing similar qualities to make an herbal mix, which can help to amplify their uses and benefits. For example, an herbal tea mixture of sarsaparilla, burdock, stinging nettle, and dandelion can help to clear up acne from the inside out. Topical mixtures and compresses can also be made from these ingredients and applied externally for the same use.

Certain herbal mixtures shouldn’t be taken too often or for too long, and by no means should they replace the presence of any medicine provided by a doctor, but they have their benefits and can certainly be used to ease the nerves.

It’s possible to grow and harvest many ingredients in your backyard to make your own herbal teas. But keep in mind that it’s a delicate practice, and it’s greatly recommended to talk to a local botanist or herbologist to get helpful tips and advice.

The benefits of tea are endless, and their medicinal qualities are bountiful. Next time you see a kettle in a store, consider making a simple cup of tea.

Roblox game reviews

By: Sophie Johnson & Biftu Osman

Roblox is a video game platform with hundreds of mini games and millions of users daily. Since this is an interest of ours, we decided to play a few games and rate them.

The first game we will be reviewing is “Survive the Killer”. This is a thrilling game where one person is randomly chosen to be the killer. The rest of the players have a mission to hide from the killer, help to save other players, and make it out of the round alive.

This is one of our personal favorite games on the Roblox app. It has a gripping element that keeps players on their toes and it also has a horror element to it.

In this game, there is a timer at the top of the screen and once the timer gets down to one more minute, the exits open. At this point, the killer can see where all the players are and it is their last chance to kill any of the players who they haven’t found yet. It is a race to the finish and either you win or the killer wins.

We rate this game a 10/10 because it is very exciting and fun.

“Natural Disaster” is another game where players are put in a simulation where they have to survive a natural disaster. Some of the disasters include acid rain, tornados, floods, fires, and volcanoes. The game announces which of the disasters will happen and the disaster begins soon after.

Players have the task of surviving and have limited health. If the health declines all the way and reaches zero, the player will be eliminated from the round. The way to win is by surviving the whole round and escaping to safety from the natural disaster.

This game is exciting because the players don’t know which disaster will come when the round starts and they have to figure out different ways to survive based on the disaster.

We would rate this game an 8/10 because some of the rounds are easier than others and you don’t have to do much to win, and we wish it was a bit more challenging.

Another game we are reviewing is “Hungry Nora”. This game is based off of the characters in the show ‘Dora the Explorer’, just under different names. In this game, the player’s goal is to collect the money from the characters and return to the safe zone without the characters catching you.

This game is thrilling because as soon as you take the money from one of the characters, they start chasing after you.

We rate this game a 7/10 because it is a simple game and is easy to understand, but other than collecting money, there is not really another point.

“Flee the Facility” is a Roblox game that was largely influenced by a different video game: “Dead by Daylight”. It’s one of the platform’s most played games since its creation in 2017. The main goal is for survivors to escape a map while evading the Beast, who captures and freezes the survivors into Freeze Pods.

To escape, the Survivors must hack a specific set of computers to unlock the Exit Doors. If a survivor is kidnapped by the Beast, the other survivors in the game can free them from the pods before the timer runs out and they’re completely frozen.

Once a round ends, the players are rewarded with XP or experience points at the end of each round, which can be used to purchase crates which provide alternative skins for hammers and jewels.

We would rate this game a 10/10 because we really enjoyed how intense it was and liked how it kept us on our feet.

The next game we’re going to review is “Rainbow Friends”. This is a multiplayer horror game consisting of 5 chapters. The first chapter opens with a group of players going on a field trip to an amusement park. The bus veers off the path and crashes when an unidentified person flips the directional sign. The players are then hauled away and sent to a mysterious facility, where they must gather items every night while evading the monsters that dwell there.

The players who have made it through each of the five nights are brought back to a safe room and given a 30 second debrief period before the next chapter.

We would rate this game an 8/10 because it was enjoyable but we wish it was more difficult to make it through each night.

The last game we are going to review is “Adopt Me”. This is a role-playing game in which you can design a home and raise a family.

When the game was first released, you could start off as either a parent or a child and then build your family from there. Since then, the game has changed and improved, and its main focus is now the role of a pet owner who can trade pets with other players.

Since its debut in 2017, this game has consistently ranked among the most played on Roblox.

We would rate this game a 2/10 because it doesn’t cater to our interests in games, but we would understand why younger children enjoy playing it.

‘Manifest’

By: Jessica Garcia Saligan

Introduction

A good show to recommend if you like watching Drama and Supernatural shows is ‘Manifest’, there’s 4 seasons.

There’s a group of people that get on a plane and next thing you know, once they get off, passengers think it has been only a few hours but in reality it’s been 5 years.

Each season has around 10-16 episodes and each episode is 42 minutes long. ‘Manifest’ starts off with the airport offering people to give up their seats for an amount of money, the only thing is that they will arrive later.

The group of passengers and crew of the commercial airline get on a plane; 828. The flight starts off like a normal flight and all of a sudden a storm appears. At first it was only a little turbulence but that’s when a really big storm hit and made the plane start to shake and started going all over the place. The plane lost signal and couldn’t get anyone on the line.

After a little while they finally made a stop at this one airline and that’s when the whole plane was surrounded by cops, news, and and even the government. All the passengers were all confused on why the plane was surrounded and that’s when the governor tells them that they have been missing since April 7th, 2013, and when they returned, it’s November 4th, 2018. They had been missing for 5 years and were presumed dead.

A few of the passengers have a little voice in their head that tells them to do something where they are at, when they try to ignore it the voice gets louder and louder, and that makes them follow what the voice is telling them. But the voices are somehow connected with the investigation the passengers are doing.

Throughout the episodes, and the season, a few passengers try to figure out what happened to them, to see if it was set up by the government like an experiment.

If you want to find out more, you can watch the show on Netflix.

JS The Bean Factory recommendation

By: Calla Fragassi & Mackenzie Malek

The Bean Factory is a small coffee shop located in St. Paul, just off of Randolph. The name JS, or Just Steves, comes from the owner Steve who established the shop in 2001 and now runs the independently owned, local coffee shop and roastery.

Now that you know a little bit about The Bean Factory, let’s take you inside.

The menu is filled with a large variety of drinks, from different coffees to Italian sodas. We can’t forget about the choice of pastries such as donuts and croissants. They also sell a selection of local art, skin and body care products, as well as some of their own merchandise, such as hats and sweatshirts.

The Bean Factory, hence the name, produces their own coffee beans, so you will be guaranteed to have a fresh cup every time. They serve three different coffees daily; one decaf and two regular coffees from different countries. If you don’t find your favorite coffee on the menu, they will make you an individual cup of coffee at their brew bar. Just ask and they will brew it for you!

They are also able to make accommodations or changes to any drink you want to suit you. The Bean Factory offers a punch card where once you buy nine drinks, you get the tenth one free for a drink of your choice. They also offer seasonal drinks like apple cider, pumpkin flavored drinks, and more.

JS is very environmentally friendly, having all compostable lids, cups, straws, and napkins!

Some of our favorite things to get at the Bean Factory are an iced chai latte or a blended mocha for on the go! If we have a bit of time to sit and study or catch up we either get hot chocolate or Steve’s double smoky coffee. If you’re planning on sitting in, you can get your drink in a JS coffee mug, or if you’re on the go you can get one of their compostable cups.

When the temperature is warming up there are outdoor seating options along with the inside seating all year long. The outside patio has an overhead shelter and is decorated with festive lights. If you are lucky enough you will get to hear some local live music that plays at JS every once in a while.

JS is right between the Macalester Groveland and Highland Park neighborhoods, which is a very welcoming community. Welcoming communities build connections between newcomers and long-term residents by strengthening relationships, and communicating shared values. Along with the community itself, the staff is very friendly and inviting.

In 2019-2020, a new Starbucks was supposed to be built on the corner of Randolph and Snelling Ave, but the community expressed their opinions on the new building and how it would take away business for The Bean Factory. After a communal vote was held, the project was moved down to the corner of Snelling and Stanford Ave which is far enough away that the small coffee shop was able to keep their business and their customers.

Their mission is to serve the community by bringing only the best coffees, roasted to perfection. They are dedicated to providing their customers with the highest quality coffee beans from a variety of different countries. The Bean Factory has also been very thoughtful to the HPSH community as they are one of our hockey team’s silver sponsors this year! They have continuously supported the team and our players throughout the season, and we cannot wait for the partnership to grow!

After many visits to the bean factory and getting to know the friendly staff and welcoming community, trying the variety of drinks and food, buying the merchandise, and getting to enjoy the local coffee shop feel, JS has become one of our favorite places, because of all it has to offer.
