Dthang Gz singles ranked

By: Judah Gregory

Daniel Collins, also known as Dthang Gz, is a Dominican American rapper from the Bronx, New York and is 20. He would make his first studio track in 2020 with his single “Caution” and has released 12 official songs. Until now, with him getting over 10 million views on just one video, he is one of the biggest rappers from New York and I’ll be ranking his official studio songs 1 through 10 from worst to best.

10# LIKE to start the list off “Like” is the number ten on this list; the reason being that this wouldn’t really be the high energy track he’s used to producing. With the changes in him rapping fast how he usually is, and it slowing down in this song , it isn’t bad. And the addition of Bando to the song was good, but not what I’m used to from him, so it’s placed here.

9# Wilding 4 Respect I liked the song but the reason it would be placed so low is because of Dthang only getting a few lines that I think were overshadowed by the other collaborators on the song. Face mob and Kay hound with their parts in the song having a better sound to them and just fit with their style more than his on the track.

8# Smooth Criminal this song would just be bad considering that it wasn’t a Dthang original song, but still being posted under his singles still makes it count. But Ace0 the collaborating rapper would use a lot of auto tune in the song that made his voice sound robotic and it just didn’t sound good in the song. But for Dthang, he would do fine just because he was on for the last 20 seconds, so him barely being in it and it just being bad is why it’s low.

7# Opponent The track opponent would be produced by ShoBeatz who would remix a popular beat which is a trend in New York rap. I liked in this song that he would come on the song matching the flow of it well, and even though it’s considered to be one of his lower songs in the general view, I think it’s a good track only being this low because of its 1:46 run time.

6# Bunny Hop This song would have a very high energy beat and would gain Dthang someTik Tok attention with his Bunny Hop dance that he does in the music video; hence the title “Bunny Hop”. In this song he would also collaborate with the Drillys once. The song was added to its ranking and it also being his first million view video.

5# Scene Now to start the top 5, I chose “Scene” because of the sound of the song and I just like it in general. There’s not too much to say about it because it’s simple and still is a good song overall.

4# Play It Back Dthang would come to this track with him rapping on a melodic drill beat which shouldn’t go good together and sound weird but Dthang rapping on this song would actually be a good balance between the two. With his more child voice it would fit well with the song because of his flow on this song and it would highlight his rapping abilities good.

3# Caution This song being ranked at my number three, with this being his first single ever released is great. His rapping on the song would sound like he knew what he was doing on the beat and it would bring a new sound to the New York scene, with his new take on drill starting with this song so it’s all the way up here.

2# GGZ Box My second favorite, and favorite single single, from Dthang is this song he would freestyle over a great beat and it was produced by DameE who is a good producer in general. So, this was set up to be a favorite and is all the way up here.

1# Talk Facts The number one single for me has to be this song. He collabs with Bando and Tdot who both go hard on the song, and the beat would fit perfect with the song, and just hearing it is obvious that this is his best single. And it’s one of the most popular out because of the contents in it.

Leap years

By: M. Ahmadad

It’s 2024, meaning we get to have an extra day in February this year. February 29th only occurs once every 4 years, making it the leap day. This rare day has different types of traditions and superstitions surrounding it, so here are some beliefs and practices about the day that you may have heard of.

February 29th is sometimes called Ladies’ Privilege, which comes from an Irish legend about women having to deal with men being too slow to propose. So, Saint Bridget made a negotiation with Saint Patrick that once every 4 years, women would be allowed to propose to a man on the 29th. If he rejected, he’d have to financially compensate her.

Febuary 29th is considered to be an incredibly unlucky day in European superstitions, the Scots believed that those born on the 29th were doomed to be sickly and go through suffering, and Germans believed that leap years in general were entirely void of luck. In Greece, it’s also believed that the 29th is cursed, and those who got married during leap years would certainly divorce.

My own birthday is on Febuary 29th, but I don’t think I myself am a particularly unlucky person. I mean, I can remember a few weird things, like the odd increase in evil clown attacks in 2016, causing the president of the WCA (World Clown Association) to be upset because people were giving the nice clowns a bad reputation. In 2020, COVID was hitting the population and there were mandated quarantine and distancing, and now currently in 2024 there’s an approaching threat of a government shutdown.

But, to be fair, major events happen in many years so there’s no real proof these things are because of a leap year curse of sorts. I hope those reading this have a healthy and safe rest of 2024 and years to come.

‘The Lightning Thief’ review

By: Abisola Dosunmu

Image created wit Hotpot AI

The first two episodes of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ were pretty fun to watch, and I am really excited to review it.

The set looked really pretty. The cabins looked straight out of my imagination. They all looked big and majestic, especially Percy’s cabin. There are green fields filled with campers going about their day, restocking weapons or training. The show really does a good job of transporting you into Camp Half Blood.

Walker Scobell, playing the role Percy Jackson, immediately brings Percy to life with his quick to miss, frustrated remarks. Aryan Simhadri plays Grover and is as lovable as his book counterpart. Leah Jeffries also looks good being the youngest of the actors, but her acting and delivery was a little stiff starting off. Later in the episode I could see a marked improvement as she grew more comfortable with her lines. The rest of the cast looks good too, but there’s still a lot to improve on, and the acting was a little rusty the first two episodes. Hoping this will improve in later episodes as the actors get more used to their roles.

Finally, the writing in this show was pretty tight considering there was a lot of action to pack in a thirty to forty minute episode, which left no time for fluff or filler. Which meant a lot of the scenes we saw in the book had to be cut out, which saddened a lot of PJO fans. The episode progresses in a rapid fire way, being that we are given some quick exposition on Percy, quickly introduced to him and Grover, then jumped right into it with him learning more about the world of Greek mythology. The dialogue is, like I said, quick or you miss it (like a bunch of stuff in the episode) with Scobell delivering it in a dry or deadpan way, similar to the way he did in ‘The Adam Project’.

The thing that disappointed me the most is that we only get the barebones of exposition; there’s little to no filler. I get why, because the directors were only given a short amount of time to deliver important scenes, but it gives off this energy of desperately trying to shove a few chapters worth into one episode and that energy is very apparent. Season two hasn’t been green lit so that definitely adds to the pressure to pack everything in.

All in all, I’d give the series an eight out of ten. The newcomers watching the show won’t notice a difference at all, and it’s both a nod to the fans that read the book, and a welcome to the ones that haven’t and are just discovering PJO. I think the adaptation accomplished what it wanted to.

2024 Winter One Acts: Weekend one

By: Erin Moore

This weekend, Highland Park’s theatre department will be putting on their first of two weekends of Winter One Acts.

While Highland usually only has one weekend of five one acts, this year there will be two weekends: five shows the first weekend, and six shows during the second. The first weekend’s shows will be January 19th at 7pm, January 20th at 2pm, and January 20th at 7pm.

All performances will be at school in the auditorium. Tickets are priced at $5 for students and $10 for adults, which can be paid in check, cash, or card. Students of Nancy Michael get in free!

Winter one acts are short, student-directed plays, and a great way to begin participating in theatre, as casts are small, and there are more opportunities for both actors and tech crew.

This weekend, the one acts being put on are ‘Cut,’ ‘Who Killed Emma,’ ‘Super Dead Man,’ ‘Passing Strangers,’ and ‘Appropriate Audience Behavior’ in order of performance. The total show will be around two hours, with a short intermission between the third and fourth one acts, where audience members can purchase concessions or merchandise outside of the auditorium.

‘Cut’, the first one act of the evening is directed by seniors Ella Tjaden and Sophia Paske and written by Ed Monk. According to Playscripts.com, “A group of actors rehearses a play within a play within a play. As the plot complications multiply, the actors begin to forget who is playing whom and who is the real director — as opposed to the actor who is playing the director, or vice versa. Then they can’t seem to remember who they really are, as opposed to the people they are playing in any of the various scripts. Then things start to get confusing…”

‘Who Killed Emma,’ directed by Piper Crosby, Annika Getz, and Sally Norby, began as a short IB film, but has developed into a hilariously entertaining one act. True crime podcast hosts Rachel Day and Casey Williams have chosen the unsolved murder of highschooler Emma White as their focus for the newest episode of their podcast. Through interviews with those who knew Emma best, they slowly begin to unravel a case that has remained unsolved for a decade.

The next one act is ‘Super Dead Man,’ directed by Nora Abenth. “Comedy and awkward moments are the best combination. You wouldn’t want to miss that now, would you?” While it’s the shortest of the one acts, it’s the perfect show to end on before the show’s intermission.

‘Passing Strangers,’ written and directed by Finn Black and Dmitriy Mangal follows the stories of six strangers as they find themselves stuck waiting for a train together. They help each other deal with their conflicts and come to terms with truths they don’t want to accept. This show is a sweet example of how healthy friendships and familial relationships can change lives.

‘Appropriate Audience Behavior,’ directed by Leo DeWolfe and Ryan Mitchell and written by Ian McWethy, concludes the first weekend’s show. The directors described their one act as, “A comedy about a local theater’s production of ‘Hamlet’, which focuses on the shenanigans in the audience. From talking to chewing, they don’t seem to know the proper etiquette.”

Everyone involved in these one acts–actors, directors, stage managers, props department, set designers, costume department, etc–have worked incredibly hard to make these amazing shows what they are, but the audience is why the work is put in. If you find yourself interested and able to attend, seeing them this weekend is a great way to support the theatre department.

Next weekend, six other one acts will be performed at the same times as the shows this weekend. Next week, an article detailing their plots will be up if you’re interested in reading.

If you’re interested in being involved in future productions, ask someone directly involved in theatre, look at the hptheatrearts Instagram page for information, watch for posters with audition QR codes, or contact Nancy Michael directly for acting in the shows or being on tech crew.

‘¥$’ album rollout

By: Ricky Perez Cardoza

Kanye West for the past few years has been in controversy after controversy and has gone completely silent on most platforms because of his comments on Jewish people. This affected Kanye a lot and caused him to lose a lot of his fans and people in his life. He also lost multiple companies working with him, including his bank; all departed from him and he even had his art diploma taken away over the Jewish comments. He lost brands like Adidas, Gap, and Balenciaga and had a documentary about him canceled. This was back in late 2022 and now there hasn’t been much on Kanye because he chose to go completely silent for most of 2023.

This has left Kanye radio silent for the past 3 years in terms of music up until recently when we had big news for his upcoming album titled ‘Vultures’ which was originally ‘¥$’. This album rollout has been calmer than his last album rollout for ‘Donda’.

Ye and his best friend right now, Ty Dolla $ign, have been working on this album for approximately 5 months and even if that sounds like not enough time for a good-sounding Ye album, from what’s been previewed recently at his multiple listening parties, it’s all sounding really good and most importantly more finished than his last album ‘Donda 2’.

The album rollout started back in November when pictures of him surfaced it showed Ye working on the album in the desert with a unique environment and architecture. 6 days later, on November 22nd, he dropped his newest song under the name ¥$ called “Vultures”. The song wasn’t that well received and even had a questionable bar by Ye.

After this, Ye had multiple private listening parties where we imagined he previewed music from the album. Later, on December 8th, Ty Dolla $ign dropped the track list for the album and this is also when we knew the title wouldn’t be ‘¥$’ and instead was changed, or was always ‘Vultures’.

On the same day, a video of Ye was posted of him previewing the song “Everybody” which had a sample from the Backstreet Boys and showed the amazing production on it.

One day before the listening party he performed at a club and said that the album was gonna come out that Friday, December 15th, which never happened.

On December 12th, he held a public listening party with tickets costing $2000 in Miami where he previewed a lot of new music. He played a total of 7 songs at this listing party and gave us a lot of information on who would be on the album.

On December 15th, when the album was supposed to be released according to Ye himself, he also revealed that he still hasn’t cleared a verse by Nicki Minaj. She said on an Instagram livestream that she won’t have the verse cleared on the song “New Body” that was a song from way back in 2018 for his unreleased album ‘Yanhdi’. This tweet had everybody sure the album wasn’t gonna drop that night.

On December 16th, he held another listening party that was shut down quickly by authorities because Ye didn’t have the required licenses and permits to have the listening party at the arena. This quickly became a disaster for the people who paid $2000 and waited hours to hear Ye when he was late to the arena. He then had them go to his apartment and that’s where he held the listening party for a short time, and we got 2 new songs and extended snippets of other songs.

The most recent news we’ve had for his album was when his agent said that the album is gonna come out on New Year’s Eve, and also a new rant Ye had on Instagram where he took shots at a lot of people, and is too long to dissect, but responded to a lot of critics including Drake and of news outlets.

As of this time, the album is still not out.

Best Christmas food

By: Judah Gregory

With the holiday season wrapping up and us going back to the regular non-seasonal food, it would be a good idea to go over my personal top Christmas/Thanksgiving foods of this year.

7. Twice baked potatoes

With my number seven spot I chose twice baked potatoes because they are first off, my favorite form of potatoes other than French fries, but also that it is basically an oven stuffed potato but more crispy with the extra stuff that is usually put into it like bacon, chives, sour cream, and other things. It’s definitely one of my favorite Christmas foods.

6. Ham

Ham would be higher on my list if it was made honey glazed, typically but usually, the ham is smoked so it isn’t really the sweet flavor that I prefer on ham that’s made during Thanksgiving. I also liked smoked ham because of the salty flavor that’s already in it when it gets smoked.

5. Yams

One of my favorite sweet things over both the holidays are yams. Candied usually is how they are made, but this year we used lemon juice, orange juice and the zest for the yams that made them really good. We also make brown sugar bark that goes onto the yams to add another texture to them.

4. BBQ ribs

Usually, I wouldn’t put ribs on this list but since I had them for the first time this year, and they were really good, I decided to put these on my list. I don’t know how they were made specifically but ribs are just good in general.

3. Oxtails

Oxtails are definitely a top three on this list because of how they are made. Depending on how they are made they can come out way different, but marinating them for at least a day makes sure that they hold all the flavor, because you braise them in beef broth and water for at least an hour and a half before they are tender enough.

2. Lobster mac ‘n cheese

This is an easy second choice for me here because I like lobster and adding it to baked mac ‘n cheese is already going to make it better. Overall, it’s just easy to make and tastes great so it’s an easy two.

1. Brisket

For my number one it’s brisket since it can be used in so many different foods after it’s cooked. Usually, it’s made smoked but you can also grill a brisket as well. It takes a long time to cook so the meat comes out really tender and it has a good bark to it that adds a different, almost a little burnt, smokey flavor but isn’t bad.

‘ELF’ movie review

By: Cade Sullivan & Joey Briseno

‘Elf’, directed by Jon Favreau and released in 2003, has firmly established itself as a timeless holiday classic. Starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, this heartwarming comedy follows the story of a human, born and raised as an elf in the North Pole, who embarks on a journey to New York City to find his biological father.

At the center of the film is Will Ferrell’s endearing and charming performance as Buddy the Elf. Ferrell’s portrayal is excellent at infectious enthusiasm, capturing the essence of a silly, childlike man. His dedication to spreading Christmas cheer, combined with his larger-than-life personality, is the main comedic element of the movie and hits more often than it misses.

The film’s humor comes from the stark contrast between Buddy’s festive spirit and the harsh realism of New York City. Watching Buddy navigate the bustling streets of the city, his naïve yet charming attempts to embrace human culture, and his pure joy at discovering everyday experiences make for fun and quality entertainment.

Supporting performances, including James Caan as Walter Hobbs (Buddy’s biological father), Zooey Deschanel as love interest Jovie, and Bob Newhart as Papa Elf, contribute significantly to the film’s charm. Caan’s character undergoes massive character development, going from a work-focused individual to a father embracing the magic of Christmas. Deschanel brings warmth and dry wit to her character, Jovie, providing a romantic subplot that complements Buddy’s journey of self-discovery.

Visually, ‘Elf’ captures the essence of the holiday season with its vibrant and festive cinematography. The set designs and costumes, especially in the scenes set in the North Pole, are cute and deliver the feeling of holiday cheer. While the CGI may not impress or look as good as it once did, it is used sparingly and complements the practical sets well.

John Debney’s musical score shouldn’t be ignored either, as it elevates the film’s emotional beats and captures the essence of Christmas. From cheerful tunes to low-key melodies, the soundtrack complements the story, positively impacting the film by adding a sense of festivity through tunes.

While ‘Elf’ might follow some predictable tropes common in holiday films, its unique warmth and earnest delivery of positive themes resonated with us. The movie makes sure to drive home its themes, heavily emphasizing the importance of love, family, and embracing uniqueness. Its long-lasting popularity lies in its ability to cause laughter, make its viewers genuinely happy, and spread that unmistakable holiday feeling.

The film’s appeal lies in its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia while offering a fresh and heartwarming take on the holiday genre. Its feel-good factor makes it a go-to movie for families seeking a fun and joyful experience come Christmas time.

In the end, Elf’ stands tall, like its protagonist among his elf friends, as a heartwarming and uplifting holiday gem. Will Ferrell’s special performance, coupled with an endearing storyline, strong supporting cast, and great visuals, makes it a must-watch during the holiday season. Its ability to capture the magic of Christmas and deliver a message of joy and acceptance has secured its place as a beloved classic for generations to come. ‘Elf’ is a film that not only entertains but also manages to warm hearts with its universal themes.

Despite its comedic tone, it manages to deeply explore themes of acceptance, belonging, and the importance of embracing your true self. Buddy’s journey of self-discovery is one to root for, and it reminds audiences about the importance of staying true to your beliefs and finding joy in life’s simplest pleasures. 5/5 stars

Holiday Hershey’s Kiss flavors ranked

By: Natalia Gercheva & Persephone Pond

Have you noticed that when the holiday season rolls around, there is a much larger variety of Hershey’s Kiss flavors available? This article will go over the different kinds, and our opinions on which ones are the best.

The original Hershey’s Kisses are available year round, but they get special packages for the holiday season. There are 6 other holiday flavors that Hershey’s releases during this time of year, which are: Candy Cane, Sugar Cookie, Cookies and Cream, Cherry Cordial, Hot Cocoa, and Mint Truffle.

The original Hershey’s Kisses have the basic milk chocolate flavor, and are always a favorite among large crowds. The classic taste makes for a lovely treat. Candy Cane Hershey’s Kisses are a white chocolate based kiss with red stripes of candy cane flavoring, and little crunches of candy cane inside. These also seem to be a favorite, and are classics in many families for the holiday season. These are packaged with small candy canes on the wrappers.

Sugar Cookie kisses and Cookies and Cream kisses are both white chocolate based like candy cane, with different flavors. Sugar Cookie kisses have a sweet and artificial flavor of a sugar cookie with chunks of colorful cookie inside. Cookies and Cream has chunks of cookie that add a wonderful texture to the kiss. The Sugar Cookie wrappers are decorated with stars, hearts, Christmas trees and ornaments, and the Cookies and Cream kisses are packaged with wrappers decorated with small snowmen.

Cherry Cordial, Hot Cocoa, and Mint Truffle are the filled Hershey’s Kisses, and Mint Truffle has a dark chocolate base while the other two are both milk chocolate. Mint Truffle has a very strong taste and smell of mint, and the flavor between the creamy filling and the dark chocolate is a perfect balance. These wrappers are decorated with snowflakes. Hot Cocoa kisses have a creamy marshmallow filling that balances with the chocolate very nicely, and the wrappers are decorated with marshmallows. Cherry Cordial has a more runny filling, staying true to classic cordial cherry truffles. The smell and flavor is very strong cherry, but it’s a wonderful balance. These are decorated with small pictures of cherries.

Overall, these flavors are delicious, and help bring variety to Hershey Kisses during the holiday season. Our final ratings (with notes) are:

7. Sugar Cookie: 4/10
● Silly positive wrapper, crunchy bits not evenly distributed, love the crunch, too sweet and artificial

6. Original: 6.5/10
● Nothing special, basic wrapper

5. Cherry Cordial: 7.5/10
● Strong smell, not quite red, very overwhelming flavor

4. Candy Cane: 8/10
● LOVE the little crunchy bits, like the pattern, pretty and fun wrapper

3. Hot Cocoa: 8.5/10
● Nice simple wrapper, creamy filling, good ratio of filling to chocolate, maybe not the most distinct flavor

2. Cookies and Cream: 9/10
● Cute wrapper, stands out, good amount of crunch, flavor so yummy

1. Mint Truffle: 10/10
● Wrapper is cute, very distinct smell, darker chocolate elevates the mint flavoring, love the cream filling

We’re very aware others may not agree with these ratings, so we posted polls on Instagram and here is how the Highland Park community ranks the flavors:

7. Sugar Cookie
6. Cordial Cherry
5. Cookies & Cream
4. Hot Cocoa
3. Mint Truffle
2. Candy Cane
1. Original Milk Chocolate

This was a very fun experiment to lead, and figuring out our favorite holiday flavors was worth the time and effort. We hope our knowledge and opinions are valuable and we strongly recommend everyone to try these flavors if possible, but not Sugar Cookie since, as you can see, no one really likes Sugar Cookie.

‘Scythe’

By: Samson Belihu

*Warning: this article contains spoilers

To help better understand this review, it is important to know that in this book, they don’t say “kill” they say “glean”. For example, “Today I have chosen to glean you.”

‘Scythe’ is about a city in the future that is an advanced civilization,
and there’s an AI that is called “The Thundercloud” that is able to solve any problems in the world.

It is so advanced that any form of illness or injury can, and will be, cured. The AI has also stopped global warming, and world hunger. Its influence is so great that governments aren’t needed in this society, and this leads to overpopulation.

We are introduced to a group of people called “Scythes”. Scythes have one job, and it’s to stop overpopulation by gleaning people. Scythes are immortal, they also have the power to change their age and faces so they are not recognizable. To balance the power the Scythes have there are 10 commandments they must also follow or their powers will be rebuked.

People that are Scythes become Scythes by being chosen by another Scythe. Once they are chosen they can’t refuse. If they do refuse, their whole family, including the chosen person, gets gleaned.

The book introduces us to two teens, our main characters Citra and Rowan who are chosen to be Scythes by Scythe Faraday. At first they wanted to refuse because that would mean gleaning people, but when they remembered the consequences they had no choice but to accept and be apprentices for the role of Scythe.

That’s when we’re told “There can only be one Scythe!” Both are hesitant at first, but once their lives are on the line, they are determined to win no matter what it takes. That’s when they both are split up and are chosen by other Scythes.

Rowan’s teacher is called “Scythe Goddard”. Whether he is the evil main villain or not is controversial. Some say he’s doing what he has to and some say he’s gleaning more than he has to just for fun.

Citra’s monitor is Scythe Curie, a teacher determined to not be corrupt despite the jobs they have.

In the end, who’s going to win? Will it be Rowan, or will it be Citra? The only way to find out is by reading the book.

In my opinion, I recommend reading this book. It has a lot of suspense and mystery. Overall, I would give ‘Scythe’ a 9.2/10.
