The rise and fall of ‘Fortnite’

By Jafar Abdi

‘Fortnite’ is a battle royale made by Epic Games initially released as a survival game back in July of 2017. Seeing as how expensive the game was and how unoriginal it was, no one was really playing it until 2 months later, on September 26th, 2017, when it was rebranded as a free to play battle royale game. But it didn’t skyrocket immediately to become the game that we all know it as today; its peak came when  Epic Games released its 3rd season in February of 2018.

This was probably the most influence a game had on a generation, there were celebrities like Drake and Travis Scott streaming with the games biggest creators on Twitch like Ninja and Dr. Lupo. The game had reached the top of the mountain. The servers were crashing because there were too many people playing the game. People were wearing clothes with ‘Fortnite’ characters on it, and everyone at school was talking about ‘Fortnite’. It was all ‘Fortnite’ and would be all ‘Fortnite’ for the next year.

The game just kept getting better and there were more players each day, but its downfall would come on August 1st, of 2019, when Epic came out with its 10th season, “Season X”. With the new update it brought lots of new aspects and different items to the game and most of which were not received well by the players. This is when people started complaining about how unbalanced things were, the developers were not listening, and the numbers took a massive nose dive.

For the next couple of years, more and more people stopped playing the game and people thought that would be it. The numbers were still great for a video game but it was nowhere near what it once was.

But then on November 3rd, of 2023, the makers of the game finally listened after so long and they released “Fortnite: Season OG”. This was the highest the numbers of players had ever been, the game was exactly like it was 5 years prior, and the game was flourishing. Everything was back to how it was and people who had long ago stopped playing started up again. It was the biggest comeback a game had made and it was great again.

‘Leave the World Behind’

By: Stephanie Benitez Caballero

*Warning: This article contains spoilers

The movie ‘Leave the World Behind’ came out in 2023 on Netflix. It’s directed by Sam Esmail and produced by former first lady Michelle Obama and former president Barack Obama.

In the movie we are introduced to the Stanford family, a family of four, with Amanda and Clay as the parents and Rose and Archie as the children. Amanda books an Airbnb for her family to get away from the city and their work for a weekend. While on the way to the Airbnb the family starts to lose internet connection on all their devices. Rose, the youngest, complains about this as she is currently enamored with a show called ‘Friends’.

When at the Airbnb the family puts away their stuff and decides to head to the beach, and while at the beach Rose notices that a boat is slowly heading towards their direction. She points it out to her parents but they do not mind it. Not until later, when the boat is nearly at the beach, do the parents realize that the boat isn’t going to turn, making them panic and run away from the boat. The family decides to go back to their Airbnb. Once back at the Airbnb the family notices that the signal to the internet is completely gone, including on their TVs.

Later that night, George and Ruth show up at the Airbnb; we learn later that these are the owners of the house. They ask the Stanford family if they can stay there as they do not feel safe going anywhere else that isn’t their home. The Stanford family is skeptical about them being the owners so they ask them to prove it, which they do by opening the alcohol cabinets. They end up staying the night against Amanda’s wishes.

The next morning something goes up on the TV, a map of the US with a caption “Cyber Attack Across The Country” this sends the families into a bit of a chaos. During the day a lot of strange things happen to the families, loud ringing noises that hurt them occur, deers begin to show up more often and act weirdly, and Archie gets a bite from a deer tick which leads to him getting Lyme disease.

The families are now on the second day of being isolated together in the house, the Stanford family gets impatient and decides to try to go back to the city but while on the way to the city they encounter that the roads are blocked off by a bunch of cars. They quickly realize that the cars are self driving Tesla cars and that they are purposely rushing into one another. The family drives back to where they were staying as they find no other way back to the city.

The next day, Archie wakes up and starts to bleed from his mouth, and he starts to pull his teeth out. This was caused by the tick he got bitten from. In a panic, Clay, the father, tries to go out into town again to find some medicine for his child.

While out, the roads are empty and he believes to be alone, until he bumps into a Hispanic lady that only speaks Spanish. In a hurry, she tries to explain to him that she needs to get back home and that there’s planes in the sky dropping red papers. This makes Clay paranoid and leaves her behind.

Slowly approaching in the background we see the plane the lady was talking about, dropping thousands of red papers. Clay goes back and shows the paper to the others. It’s in Arabic, making them believe that the Arabs are the ones attacking them.

Rose disappears, so Ruth and Amanda go out to search for her while Clay and George try to go out with Archie to find medicine to treat the Lyme disease. They get to one of the closest houses and the owner tells them to back away because he couldn’t help them. He threatens them at gunpoint but they beg him to help them as they know he has the things need to save Archie. He gives in and supplies them with the medication.

The neighbor gives them so much information on everything going on, saying that he believes that it isn’t the Arabs attacking them, that the outside world is trying to confuse them and mess with them so that people will attack each other in confusion. He also lets them know one of the nearby houses has an underground base with many supplies and safety for all of them.

We cut to a scene of a house, a window broken. We see Rose inside eating what looks like a feast of junk food. Rose goes down to the basement where she finds an underground bunker, the one mentioned by the neighbor. Alone, Rose finds a DVD of the show Friends’, forgetting her family she sits down and smiles as she gets to watch the last episode of ‘Friends’.

I really liked this movie. I feel as if the trailer doesn’t spoil much but also gives a bit of context on what the movie will be about. I thought I knew what was going to happen but every moment new information and things came up. I think it’s a very realistic thing that would happen if the US were to get attacked. Some things weren’t explained further, such as who really created the attack, but I think that really adds to the movie.

I also really enjoyed the ending. I personally think that the last clip was to represent how in bad situations, that happen in the world, humans will always naturally turn to entertain themselves to distract them or make them forget about the world around them. I would rate this movie a 10/10.

Christmas cookie list

Books that are being adapted

By: Abisola Dosunmu

2023 ends with an astonishing array of on screen adaptations. From ‘Red White Royal Blue’ to ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ (both of which I’ve done articles for) there were certainly a lot of fan favorites coming to the screen this year. In 2024 there are even more adaptions coming.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’:

Image created with Hotpot AI

The story starts off with the protagonist, Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy with ADHD and dyslexia and an incurable talent of being kicked out of every school he attends, discovering he’s a ‘demigod’ (half god and half human). This leads to his entering the world of Greek Gods and Goddesses, dangerous quests, and having to remember all the various myths surrounding them. Thrown into this world with only a pen, his best friend turned satyr, and a know-it-all girl he can’t stop fighting with, he’s tasked with finding and returning Zeus’s master lightning bolt to prove himself innocent because everyone thinks he stole it. That’s tough.

What we know about the series:

It’s coming out on the 20th of December, so as of right now, you can watch it. It’s released on Disney+ AND Hulu, according to information that was confirmed by Rick Riordan himself on December 14th (only the first episode will be released on Hulu whilst Disney+ will get the full first two episodes). Walker Scobell will be playing Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries plays Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri plays the dynamic Grover. The show is set to have an eight episode season. Season two hasn’t been green-lit yet.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Image created with Hotpot AI

‘Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe’ is a coming of age LGBTQ+ story. Set in the year 1987, Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Dante Quintana are both Mexican American teenagers who quickly become  inseparable. They learn and grow from each other while sharing journeys of self-discovery as they explore their teenage-hood, growing up, their identities, sexualities, and relationships.

It’s available on Hulu and Amazon and the movie was released on September 8, 2023. Max Pelayo plays Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Reese Gonzales plays Dante Quintana.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

The live action was announced in September 2018, with a cast including Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Daniel Dae Kim. The series is set to release on February 22, 2024 on Netflix and just like ‘Percy Jackson’, will consist of a season with eight episodes.

Artist Statement:

I drew this because I loved the design of the characters of a manga called ‘Berserk’. This one specifically I thought it would be perfect for the white and black pencil coloring. This character has a dark image on him so it matches well for the dark tone.

I also wanted to try something new and something out of my comfort zone so I drew this and it came out how I wanted it to be. I enjoyed the process and the final result and would loved to do something like this again.

‘Pink Tape’ album review

By: Judah Gregory

‘Pink Tape’ is Lil Uzi Verts most recent album released in 2023 and was Lil Uzis first album in three years. The album had mix reviews on release and his attempt at rock on this album is what gets the most critique, but with all the hype surrounding it, it would make it to 1# on Billboard’s Hot Two Hundred. The album has 10 tracks so I’ll be giving my short review on them and rank the album overall.

“Flooded the Face” is the opening track and has a cosmic sounding beat and sounds fine with vocals since this is him rapping and not attempting rock on this song. I think this is why it got good reviews, but overall the track was okay.

“Doors” this song is Uzis first attempt at rock on this album and it sucked overall in my opinion. His voice doesn’t really sound hard metal like anyways and this is his first try, so for it it’s not the worst attempt he could have made at this point in the album, but it gets worse.

“Aye” this song would feature the rapper Travis Scott and this would be a pretty good song on the album; I think because of the Travis feature. Uzi would actually play this song in concerts and Travis would want to make a verse on the song once he heard it. Overall, this track is pretty good for the album.

“Crush Em” previously known as “Own Age” through the series of snippets, is the 4th track on ‘Pink Tape’. The song had a really weird beat to follow it up like a futuristic retro beat, and sorta felt like a 90’s song, and with Uzis more high pitched voice it kinda fit with it. The song isn’t it for me but I could see how some people would like it

“Amped” is the fifth track from Lil Uzi Vert; the track was briefly previewed at the beginning of the album’s trailer. On this song, Uzi keeps it simple which I like since it’s not him trying to mix beats. This song I liked for its overall feel and can put you in a good mood.

“X2” is the 6th track on ‘Pink Tape’ by Lil Uzi Vert. It’s upbeat and bouncy and was produced by Ken Carson and Clif Shayne, two Opium signees under Uzi, This song had a lot of hype since he made it on an Instagram Live that I was on too, so it was cool to listen to this song. The feature of Ken Carson, I think, made this song better.

“Died and Came Back” this song is just weird and bad in my opinion. Here he was yelling about his money and things and with the rock music mixed with other beats, it just didn’t sound good. This song was bad, with just too much in it.

“Spin Again” this song would have a chaotic beat but would fit with Uzi, and the vocals in the song would also feature an Ice Spice lyric which would get him in trouble with his own girlfriend. Overall, the song is one of the best of the album in my opinion, and it is one of the most popular.

“I Gotta” this track was teased by Uzi in an Insta Live as usual. This song would be produced by Ken Carson again so this would have a good beat and would flow well with the song lyrics. This would speak on Uzi’s need to still make music after taking a long break.

“Shardai” the last track on this album would be produced by John Ross, and the vocals that Uzi used that weren’t rock were good for this song. In this song he would talk about another girl that he was in love with and his feelings for her at that time. For a closing song it was a strong way to end the album.

Overall, this album is a 6 out of 10 with it having some strong songs like “Shardai” and “X2” but its rock songs bring down the album to that 6.

Seasonal Recipes: Peanut butter blossoms

By; Austin Bailey-Zimmerman

In honor of Christmas time which just passed, I decided to bake these delicious peanut butter blossoms. They were so easy and fun to make, and I even decided to double the recipe because I enjoyed them so much!

I made these with my grandmother and my mom. It’s a family tradition for us to make these every Christmas. We have had this recipe in our family for a very long time, and I am glad because they make my mouth water every time.

I have these cookies as dessert, with some hot tea, or just as a snack. They are perfect bite-sized cookies, and the savory peanut butter cookie is paired perfectly with the sweet chocolate kiss on top. The outside of the cookie is crunchy, and surrounded by sugar, and the inside is soft and chewy. I have enjoyed these so much, so I shared them with the rest of my family and friends. You can do the same with this recipe! Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1⁄2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1⁄2 cup butter, softened
  • 1egg
  • 1 1⁄2 cups flour
  • 3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1⁄4 cup sugar
  • 1 Bag of Hershey’s kisses milk chocolate candies, unwrapped

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the sugars, peanut butter, butter and egg with an electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with a spoon, until well blended.
  3. Stir in flour, baking soda and baking powder until dough forms.
  4. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in additional granulated sugar.
  5. On ungreased cookie sheets, place the balls about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 8-10 mins or until edges are light golden brown.
  7. Immediately press 1 milk chocolate candy into the center of each cookie.
  8. Remove from cookie sheets to a cooling rack. (Put in freezer to cool faster)
  9. Enjoy!

Kind things to say to someone who’s upset

By: Chloe Rocha

In life people will experience many different kinds of emotions, they may have their ups and downs. Sometimes when they are down it can be hard to find the right words to say to them. I myself have been on both ends of this situation. When you find yourself upset about something, sometimes there is a specific set of words that you really need to hear at that moment. Those words can vary from person to person, there isn’t a set sentence that can make everything better. But on the other side of the situation, when you see someone upset, people can tend to freeze up and not know what to say. This article is a guide to help you find the right words.

If they are struggling with depression it can be hard to identify that. Here are some common signs and characteristics of depression:

  • Feelings of hopelessness.
  • Negative thoughts; this can include about yourself or the world.
  • Difficulty doing regular and daily activities.
  • Sleep or appetite problems

Here are four things you can say that might help more than you expect:

‘It’s okay to not feel okay’
It can be common for a person to feel like something is wrong with them for feeling a certain way. That’s why saying “it’s okay to not feel okay” can reassure them in their feelings.

‘Your not alone’
When experiencing feelings of sadness, the person may feel as though they are alone or as though they should isolate themselves from others. Just those three words can help someone feel very loved and cared for.

‘I’m here for you, no matter what’
If your friend or a loved one is feeling like a burden or unworthy, saying this can help remind them that you’re going to be there for them, not only when things are bad, but for the good as well.

‘Help is available’
When someone feels hopeless, it becomes hard to see the good things, or that things can get better. There are many treatments for people who need it, so reminding them when they aren’t able to think straight can help clear their mind and make a huge difference.

According to Healthline, at least 21 million Americans have or are experiencing depression. If you or someone you know or love is a part of the statistics, there are many resources available to help.

A helpline that you can text is 741-741, text HOME and an automated message will be sent right away as they are assigning someone to your text message.

If you would prefer to call the national suicide hotline it is 988.

‘Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’: Movie review

By: Abisola Dosunmu

Image created with Hotpot AI

‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, is a prequel to the four-part ‘Hunger Games’ movie franchise that’s set “64 years before Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen ever drew breath”, which means there are several serious changes. The known antagonist, Coriolanus Snow, who was played by Donald Sutherland in the previous movie, is now an 18-year-old kid played by actor Tom Blyth. Actress Rachel Zegler replaces Jennifer Lawrence as the female protagonist and plays one of the vital main characters, Lucy Gray Baird.

The movie was authored by Suzanne Collins and, like the ‘Hunger Games’, centers on a fight to the death/survival-of-the-fittest type reality show that only leaves one victor. For context, the games were invented as a punishment by the Capitol of Panem as payback to the 12 districts who dared to rebel against the Capitol. Every year on a specific day since that, a boy and a girl, relatively in their teens, are chosen from each district to fight to the death in a televised gladiator event.

Lucy as a character is already shown throughout the movie to be a different character to Katniss. She, like the title of the movie, is a songbird with a guitar and in a traveling band called the Covey. Strangely enough, the movie isn’t told from her point of view but from the younger Snow struggling to make it back to the top after losing everything. Lucy is his way back to that life, so he takes advantage of it and with that, the Hunger Games begin. Without giving away spoilers, I’m just going to say it gets pretty predictable from there.

So, what did I think of the movie? Well, it’s been a long time since I watched and read the ‘Hunger Games’, so basing it off of that it’s a refreshing and new take. It was interesting seeing young Snow and his motivations and aspirations and how the Capitol was the same but different a few decades ago. The actors had a lot of chemistry and the only bad thing I would say about the movie was that there wasn’t a lot of screen time for a lot of characters to develop the way there was in the book, so some characters felt rushed and not properly fleshed out. All in all, I’d give this movie an 8/10.
