Highland Park Showcase: 2017

Showcase is an open house for students from other schools to come see Highland. If any students were interested in Highland, this open house gives them an opportunity to come and learn more about Highland, its staff, classes, offerings, and The IB program in a more in depth way.

This year’s showcase was on Thursday, January 11th, 2017 from 6:00- 8:00 pm. Anybody was welcome to come, and the turn out wasn’t bad. The first level of the auditorium was almost full with around 200 -300 people there to get to know about Highland.

A variety of after school clubs and activities had boards at the showcase to advertise themselves. Some of the activities and clubs represented included: Robotics, ULA, Newspaper, Yearbook, FFA, Link Crew, Math Team, Chess Club and Anime Club.

During the showcase, the Highland Park Jazz Band preformed. They played 3 different songs during the showcase drawing in a crowd. The Jazz Band has been practicing since late September or early October and they sounded really good.

A lot of people interested in Highland went to the Showcase on Thursday. Hopefully they left with a lot more information about Highland, and a better feel overall of the schools atmosphere.

Shawn Mendes tour

18 year old singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes is one of the biggest singers today as he has had two of his singles reached the Top 20 on Billboard’s Top 100 and Radio Charts.

Shawn got his start after posting a 6 second video on the app, “Vine,” of him singing an acoustic version of Justin Beibers “As Long As You Love Me” on July of 2012. Overnight he got over 100,00 likes and his follower count kept increasing. His fan base grew quickly over a course of a couple of months as he was on Vine, YouTube and Twitter.

When he began posting videos on YouTube, he posted himself doing covers and also posted videos teaching people how to play the guitar. According to an interview he did with The Telegraph UK he claims that, “If you look on YouTube and see some of my first covers you will hear that I did not sound good.” Regardless, he continued to post covers and improve his singing. Now, according to cheat sheet.com, he has over 3.5 million followers on Vine, 2.4 million on Twitter, over a million ‘likes’ on Facebook, and over a million subscribers on YouTube.

Shawn signed with Island Records in June of 2014. He released a 4 song EP, The Shawn Mendes EP which reached No. 1 on iTunes in 37 minutes. He then released his first album, Handwritten on April 14th, 2015, which later on reached No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 chart.

After releasing his sophomore album, Illuminate he has announced his first ever headlining arena world tour for the spring-summer of 2017! According to the website z90.com, his tour will start on April 27th, in the U.K, and will end on August 23rd, in Boston, MA with many more dates yet to be announced in North America and globally.

His newest album, Illuminate, includes his latest hit single “Treat You Better” which has reached the top 10 on both of Billboard’s Hot 100 and Radio Songs chart. Again, according to z90.com, this is Shawn’s second top 10 single on the Hot 100 after “Stitches” reached #4 last year.

Russian hacking

Russian involvement in, and hacking of, the U.S. democratic election has been a major topic during this past presidential election. Many, including trusted and renowned news groups such as CNN, MSNBC, NBC, as well as other politicians, have speculated whether or not Russia had a role, on any level, in the election.

On page 11 of the “US Intelligence Report” on Russia’s involvement with the previous election states, in bold lettering: “Putin Ordered Campaign To Influence US Election.”

This report was put together by top intelligence officials who testified in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee about the issue and their report. The opening sentence of the main report says, “We assess with high confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election, the consistent goals of which were to undermine public faith of the US democratic system, denigrate US secretary Hillary Clinton, ad harm her elect-ability and potential presidency.”

President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly disputed the allegation of Russian hacking, resulting in a direct impact of the outcome of the election. Trump has said, “They have no idea if it’s Russia or China or somebody. It could be somebody sitting in a bed some place,” with  “they” referring to the US intelligence Agency.

Trump, however, did briefly acknowledge the possibility of Russian involvement by saying, “it could be Russia” that hacked Democrats. “I don’t really think it is, but who knows? I don’t know either. They don’t know and I don’t know.”

However, they, the various intelligence agencies do know. We, the informed people know. Russia did work to try to impact the US election. “The General Staff’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) probably began cyber operations aimed at the US election by March 2016. We assess that the GRU operations resulted in the compromise of the personal email accounts of Democratic Party Officials and political figures.” It is safe to assume that the GRU is not a “morbidly obese fourteen year old sitting in their bed,” which was previously hypothesized by the future US President, Donald J. Trump.

The report goes on to say, “Russian Intelligence accessed elements of multiple state or local electoral boards. Since early 2014, Russian intelligence has researched US electoral processes and related technology and equipment.”

The intelligence report also seems to anticipate that this will not be the only time Russia will try impact the US elections. “We assess Moscow will apply lessons learned from its campaign aimed at the US presidential election to future influence efforts in the United States and worldwide, including against US allies and their election processes. We assess the Russian intelligence services would have seen their election influence campaign at least a qualified success because of their perceived ability to impact public discussion.”

It is this writer’s opinion that Russia attempted to hack, impact, and manipulate the outcome of the 2016 US Presidential election, which has been clearly stated in the US Intelligence Report. It is so clearly, blatantly stated, that anybody, with the unfortunate exception of the future US president, is capable of understanding. Russia may not have been successful, but the mere idea of them being able to have the tools, and means, to manipulate the American democratic system is frightening. It is something we need to be aware of; something we need to know how to prevent.

Carrie Fisher’s life and legacy

With the recent passing of Carrie Fisher, everyone should take a look back at her life achievements. She suffered a heart attack on December 27, 2016, but she will be remembered for years for all she did. Carrie Fisher was most known for her role in Star Wars as Princess Leia, but that was not nearly all that she did. She was an established author who wrote many books as well as a screenplay for her most well known book, Postcards From the Edge.

She made her film debut in the 1975 film Shampoo, and 2 years later starred in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.  This movie kicked her successful career off, and her acting performance gave her many future jobs.

Carrie wasn’t the only famous person in her family. Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, was a very well known actress and singer. She unfortunately passed away, only one day after her daughter, following a severe stroke.

Fisher wasn’t only known for her accomplishments on screen. She publicly came out as someone who suffers from Bipolar disorder, a mental condition that causes major mood shifts very regularly. She also has said she suffered from drug addiction, even admitting she used cocaine during the filming of the Empire Strikes Back. Because of her openness, she was seen as a role model to those who have been through, or are going though, these things.

Carrie’s legacy will be remembered for many years to come; she was a motivation to many – young and old alike.

Four Seasons field trip

Students at Highland Park Senior High (HPSH) were given a chance to spend the day with Four Seasons Elementary 4th graders on January 6th, 2017. Students that went on the field trip were from the school’s Newspaper and AVID classes.

When the students arrived at Four Seasons, they were instructed to put their belongings on the back wall of the gym. Every student was given a name tag and a button to show they were students from HPSH. The students were there to be “helpers” to the youth group leaders that were in charge for the day.

After checking in with everyone, the youth group leaders came and had the students stand in a circle. There were three leaders: Sebastian, Vanessa, and Sesay. While two of the leaders were setting up, the third taught the students what to do when the 4th graders arrived in the gym.

When the 4th graders arrived, the high school students paired up and went to choose a number for their small group. My partner and I chose number “4.” Every 4th grader with a number “4” by their name tag was in our small group. We met up near one of the walls of the gym and sat in a circle.

In our small group, we had around eight 4th graders. We went around the circle introducing ourselves. After that, we were ordered to follow the instructions on the back of the sheet of paper we were given. We talked about what were some of the bad things that happen at school. We listed them all. The one that came up the most was “spreading rumors around the school.” We then talked about ways to end these bad behaviors in school.

Soon after, everyone gathered up again and to play a few games with the leaders and other groups. The games played were: Ships Ahoy, Train Dance, and many more. After playing the games, we had story time. Sebastian told us stories about when he was faced with bullying and when he saw people being bullied. The stories were great and full of lessons.

After a while, we were sent back to our small groups and then talked some more. Lunch time came after the small group talk. We had to sit by our small groups for lunch. After lunch, we played a game kind of like Charades. Our group tried, but we only got 8 points.

Once the games were over, after lunch, everyone went back to the front and listened to the youth leaders. Everyone got up and we danced and danced, and at around 1:15, it was time to leave. The trip was fun; everyone seemed to enjoy the retreat.

Every 4th grader had a great time with us (hopefully). The kids really enjoyed the leaders, though some seemed to like them more than others.

Hopefully, we will get the chance to go go back next year to help with the students and upcoming retreats.

Trump vs. Streep

The Golden Globe Awards is a ceremony where the most esteemed actors and actresses are recognized for their work. This year Meryl Streep, a well known actress, was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. While stepping onto the stage and quieting the crowd, Streep had a few things to say to our soon to be president, Donald Trump. She spoke of the comment Trump made when he imitated a mentally disabled reporter, and how she felt it was absolutely unacceptable. Although Streep’s speech wasn’t the longest ever given, many of the other people attending the ceremony were nearly in tears or gazing in awe.

When she went up to give her speech many things happened: she started out by saying how thankful she was for the award, she then moved on to name many actors, and actresses, then she listed where they were from, and explained that if we take out all the foreigners from Hollywood then we wouldn’t have anything entertaining, art filled, or even meaningful.

Streep then went on to say how we have let someone who is insensitive, and not speaking for the greater good, into our most cherished and honored seat of our country. She talked about how having our president elect making fun of disabled people makes Americans feel ashamed and hurt.

Meryl Streep was standing up for America, and then got dragged under the bus by that very same president elect for exercising her first amendment rights.

When he heard what Streep had to say about him, our president elect, Donald Trump, went to Twitter to share his opinions on the actress. He went on to call her a “Hillary flunky who lost big,” as well as “overrated.”

The Internet was enraged by his comments, with many pointing out how unprofessional it was. An international hashtag regarding the feud was started: #ThingsTrumpThinksAreOverrated. Many disagreed with his statement and went to Twitter to share their opinions. The tag was filled with tweets agreeing with Streep’s statement against Trump’s controversial and hateful comments.

Even though Streep had her supporters, there were still many people who agreed with Trump and defended the comments he made. For example, Tomi Lahren, an online video host for TheBlaze had multiple comments for Streep. Lahren called the people at the ceremony an “Overrated collection of liberals” and “Out of touch with the rest of America.” Many others along with Lahren sided with Trump and began to bash Streep.

Whatever your views are, we hope we can all get along under the new president.

Start times: How it will effect more than just high school

Sleep deprivation. It’s a chronic health problem that’s affecting adolescents today, and to some, it all comes down to having to wake up as early as 5 a.m., just to get ready for school. Everyone knows school starts way too early and it’s been told time and time again that students need more sleep. Lately, school systems have been proposing to have high schools start at a later time, but here’s the catch: often times, this means that elementary school students have to start a lot earlier.

Research done by the National Sleep Foundation has shown time and time again that teens who start school at around 8:00 a.m. or earlier have a higher risk of not performing well in school, than those who start at around 9:00 a.m. If districts were to go forward with this change in start times, it would possibly mean a big change for elementary school students.

One of the biggest concerns parents and the districts have for their elementary students is time management and transportation. Some parents who have to work overnight, and don’t get home until 7:00 a.m., or get up in the early morning hours of the day to get to work, are concerned they won’t be able to supervise their child as they get ready, or be able to drive their child to school on time.

Most districts use the same busses to drop off their high school and elementary students, but if start time changes goes forward, it means the districts would probably have to hire more busses to take the younger children to school, otherwise, earlier school start times for elementary students would have to take effect.

If elementary schools were to start earlier, that means they would get out earlier than usual as well. As stated before, some parents have work during those hours so were would young students go during that time? After school activities would be an option for some, which could help out in the long run, but for the high school students, starting at a later time could lead to fewer or no after school activities.

It’s a debate to surely never end, but the biggest question here is really:

Is it worth it to have high school students start at a later time?

Dealing with the cold

Minnesota is having one of the coldest winters of any state in the U.S. This means residents from all over the state have to prepare to face the cold in order to get wherever they are going. Students are especially affected by the cold because they have to commute to and from school every week-day. We asked students of Highland Park Senior High how they deal with the cold inside or outside.

A common response from students was to wear lots of layers. Ranging from jackets, sweatshirts, and blankets students said they wore whatever they could to stay warm traveling to and from school.

At home, some students said that the best cure for the cold was a warm blanket and a hot beverage. One student said, “I deal with the cold by bundling up, then I go home to drink hot chocolate, or tea, then watch a movie occasionally.”

Some students were pros when it came to the cold, and didn’t feel like it was something to deal with. “ The school is warm, so I don’t worry about the cold before I go to school,” one student said. “ I don’t wimp out, and go outside without fear,” another student exclaimed. Cold doesn’t seem to bother these people which is a trait most wish they could have.

Some students, however, simply are not coping with the cold at all. Despite living in Minnesota, some people just do not get along well with frigid weather. One 10th grader said, “I don’t deal with the cold. I get frostbite.” Another senior student said, “I just look forward to getting back indoors.” It seems some of us Minnesotans can barely make it through each winter alive and well.

So far, this winter has been very cold, and there has been quite a lot of time with temps below zero. But, we are looking towards a warmer few weeks coming up, and spring is coming right around the corner.

Highland (post) holiday movie picks

Everyone knows that Christmas movies are a clear indication that the holidays are truly here. Out of curiosity, we wanted to know what movies Highland favors. We distributed a survey asking students to pick their favorite film out of these five choices: The Polar Express, The Grinch, Home Alone, A Christmas Carol, and Elf. Christmas movies are a great way to spend the holidays and this was the perfect kick off to winter break!

When we surveyed our classes, the results came back, and without a doubt the family classic Home Alone was the favorite Christmas movie. Most people wrote that they liked it because it was funny and entertaining. They said things like:

“It shows that mischief can be mixed with love. True loyalty lies in the heart.”

“It is a funny movie and is great for the family.”

“Because it’s funny and entertaining”

As for the other movies, there were a fair amount of votes for Elf and The Grinch. But it is easy to understand why most of them picked Home Alone. We love all of these great Christmas movies and any one of them could have been the top choice for our Highland community.

Based on our survey’s outcome, Home Alone was deemed the winner as the best Christmas movie of the five given. The movie has always been labelled by many as a Christmas essential, and we here at Highland would have to agree. If you’re looking for a light-hearted family film to get over the holidays, or anytime, Home Alone is a perfect choice.

Possible schedule changes for 2017-2018 school year

The Saint Paul Public School Board is considering changing the schedule layout for the 2017-2018 school year. The board thinks that by changing the number of periods we have each day, and/or changing to trimesters, we as a district can save a significant amount of money per year. Here are some of the options the school board is considering.

  • Having a 5 period days over trimesters instead of semesters.
  • Having a 6 period day with 55 minute periods in semesters
  • Keeping a 7 period day with 47 minute periods in semesters
  • Having an alternating block schedule, “A days & B days”, with 4 periods of 75 minutes each period, in semesters.

Switching over to trimesters could have some benefits but also some complications. Trimesters would allow students to take more classes each year than they would under a 6 period day with semesters. Students could join a support class without risking graduation credits. Some complications with trimesters include a harder schedule to create. Also, any schedule change of the student may have multiple complications as counselors would have to schedule students 3 times per year instead of 2. Trimesters also would allow students to transition more often per year, so that could be good or bad depending on the student.

image2I asked 3 students their opinions on the possible schedule changes and they all had something a little different to say. Cecilia Velazco, a Sophmore, said she would like A days and B days “because it would be different everyday. I wouldn’t get bored all the time.” David Ramirez, a Junior, thinks “Having only 4 period days would get to be boring. Teachers can barely keep student attention how it is now. I cant imagine staying engaged all 75 minutes.” Mayte Rodriguez disagrees, she says “Having 5 period days would be nice. It would allow more time for teachers to thoroughly explain material.  And it might make our homework load lighter”.

Despite your feelings about the schedule change posibilities, in the 2017-2018 school year, it looks like we won’t have a 7 period day with quarters.
