HPSH 2015 footballl

In his interview head coach David Zeitchick told the Pioneer Press “I don’t know what kind of football they play in the Tri-Metro, but we showed them what the City Conference is all about.”

After a win of 49-23. Highland’s senior quarterback and football captain Charles Klug completed 7 of 11 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns.

When asked about the 2015-16 Varsity football team coach Zeitchick said “The key right now is to share the ball and for the players to know there is no one star of the team. We have a tight nit group of boys that have worked very hard all through the summer.”

Both the coaches and the players have come into this season with more intensity ready to play and ready to win. Senior Quarterback Charles Klug said  “We need to come to every game ready to play as if we were playing Central.”

The 2015 Varsity football team has become more of a show than the past few years (tailgaiting, cheerleading, more enthusiastic fans) which makes it a lot more fun for the players and also a lot more fun for the fans.

All of our senior captains believe we have a strong chance of going undefeated for the rest of the season and making it to state. If you were going to choose one year to go to games this would be your year!

Volleyball

After a 2014 campaign that led to a conference title and a deep run into the section playoffs, the Highland Park Scots girls volleyball team is once again slated to put together another successful 2015 season. After a 4-0 start that included wins against Sibley and fellow St Paul City conference foe Johnson, the Scots entered the weekend with momentum as they attended the Visitation Invitational Tournament.

They started their tournament run against St. Louis Park, and defeated them in convincing fashion 2-1. Next they faced the team that would give them trouble throughout the entire tournament, the Academy of Holy Angels. Highland battled hard in the first set, but would ultimately end up losing to Holy Angels 2-1. Although it was a tough loss the girls were not out of the tournament yet, and next they had to face conference rival Como Park. This matchup provided one of the most entertaining games of the tournament. After dropping the first set to Co
mo, the team fought strong during the 2nd set and forced it to go into extra games and eventually pulled off a 30-28 win, and would then go on to win the 3rd set. Following anther 2-1 victory of Robbinsdale Armstrong, the girls found themselves matched up again against Holy Angels in the 1st place game. After dropping the first set in extra games 27-25, they were able to win the 2nd set 25-22 and force a 3rd game for all the marbles. The team would eventually lose the 3rd set 15-10 for their 2nd loss of the tournament to Holy Angels, and settle for 2nd place.

The team has received very good play from senior captain and Division 1 commit Emilia Czapiewska. She currently is leading the team in scoring and provides a threat in front of the net. They have also received very nice play at the setter position from sisters Cassandra and Maddy Krois. The sister duo leads the team in assists. Another player to look out for is Junior Maria Nelson, who is putting up nice scoring numbers, as well as Junior Lucia Calatayud, who keeps the opposing team on their toes with her nice serve game.

Highland Park has entered a contest with Car2Go to win 10,000 for our athletic program. Many students participated by tweeting, “#Car2GoScots” which enters our school in the contest for a chance win. Highland Park is the only Saint Paul school that is getting involved with the contest, so make sure to Tweet or Instagram that hashtag to increase our chances of winning! The football team loves the turnout of fans and school spirit at the games! They still encourage everyone to come for an even bigger student section. Go Scots!

Wanderlust

Hundreds of organizations deport thousands of students to virtually any country of thier choosing for weeks at a time to engulf them in the foreign traditions and cultures they would otherwise be partially ignorant to. Organizations such as AFS, Youth For Understanding, CIEE, and countless others send off high school students to their country of interest. Countries from Japan to the United Kingdom, and Australia to Ireland. Although we learn about foreign cultures in our human geography class or our language class, it’s not the same as being where the text book is depicting.

Studying abroad has caught the eye of thousands of students, specifically three times as many students since 1995. In the 2012-13 school year, as many as 289,408 students packed their bags to surround themselves in what they’ve only read in text books.

How did these almost 300,000 students get connected with programs abroad? With countless organizations and amazing reviews it couldn’t have been hard. One could simply type “exchange student organizations” and 37,400,000 results will appear in 0.32 seconds. And in just a few minutes you could exchange your social norms for a few weeks (or a school year) for an experience of a lifetime.

FRESHMAN

2019

Welcome Freshman!

Heres a few tips from a senior who wishes she would have listened a little better. When becoming a freshman you have to become more independent and don’t always have someone holding your hand telling you to show up to school or do your homework and in that case you’re going to need to balance your activities with your homework, stay organized, and ask when needed. I know that because you don’t constantly have a teacher down your throat screaming at you to do your homework you might not seem so pressured to do it, but seriously staying home for an hour or two to finish up an essay or project before going out with friends will be well worth it on graduation day.

You should definitely balance your activities, job, hanging out with friends, and homework out. Always make sure you have time to get your assignments done before taking on more obstacles.

Also always ask for assignments or notes when you’re gone for a day, the teachers aren’t going to come up to you and tell you what you missed, you’re going to be expected to fend for yourself, stay in touch with what’s going on in all of your classes and buying a planner helps so much.

Doing all these things will create so much LESS stress as graduation comes up, and trust me it’s going to come fast. Barely making it is not worth being lazy or telling yourself you’ll have time later, get what you need to done and you’ll also appreciate your spare time so much more.

Good luck!

Depending on the amount of people that are being served, you decide how much you think you will need to serve this recipe.

First, cut the apples in half vertically.

Then, with a deep spoon, hollow out the center so that there is no longer a core.

After, melt the caramel at a low temperature and pour into the hollowed apple until full.

Then let the apple halves sit in the fridge for about 30 mins or until the caramel has hardened.

Get organized with CORNELL NOTES!!!

“Organize, don’t agonize.” -Nancy Pelosi.

As high school students, we need to take notes in class everyday, especially in math, science, and history. I find myself so confused when looking back at notes to study for exams, hunting through a mass of information using the typical bullet point format for notes. That is why I would recommend every single student to make use of Cornell notes! This style of note taking makes it easier to organize and distinguish certain information from one another under a single topic. Just take a peek at the left hand column and you would be able to identify the topic you’re searching for. Not only does the spacing makes your notes look clean, but it can also be personalized to your own liking.

Cornell notes are very efficient, so why aren’t more people wanting to use it? Well, it could be the fact that some people are too lazy to make two simple lines on their piece of paper, or possibly traumatized by teachers forcing them to

take notes this way. All that you would really need to draw is one horizontal line on the first line of the paper to separate the notes from the main title, and then a vertical line about 2 inches from the left side of the paper. To make it more interesting, you could also try creating dotted lines, curvy swirls, or funky waves to separate out the sections. This left section of the paper is used to list different smaller headings related to the main topic. When taking notes on a story, I would often times just label the headings based the name of chapters, or the headings they have already provided for you.

Try playing around with different fonts, or use a wide range of colored pens to differentiate between the headings. Nothing could ever go wrong with being so colorful! According to FastCompany.com, color coding your notes can make you a more efficient thinker. Not only does it help you map out your mind, but it also stimulates your inner creativity. Colors will make your notes come alive, compared to looking at monotonous granite text and scribbles on the infinite bright blue lines. However, you should not go overboard with this, for these will be notes so you can study, and not become distracted by your extreme art expressions

Here is how you should take Cornell notes:

  1. First of all, it is most important to always write your name and date on the upper right hand corner, just in case your paper rips out of your notebook and you lose it.
  2. Using either a college ruled lined paper or plain white paper, draw a vertical line down the paper, about two inches wide from the left edge of the paper. You could carry around a ruler to do this, but it would work either way using any sort of straight edge too.
  3. Next make labels by writing the title on the first line of the paper, making sure it is written in a larger font compared to your regular handwriting to distinguish between notes and titles.
  4. On the left column section, write the different headings appropriate to the key concept to what you are taking notes on.
  5. On the large right hand section, take brief notes corresponding to the appropriate heading. Try paraphrasing important information in your own words, based on the way you best understand things. **Remember, these are your own notes you will use to study for tests and quizzes, so make sure you know what you’re writing. This sections is also available for tiny sketches and drawings related to your topic (hence, another opportunity to unleash your beautiful artistic skills!)
  6. After you completely finish writing your last bullet point, draw a line underneath it and label this bottom section “SUMMARY”. Write down the main ideas of what you have learned about the topic and includes some questions you still have for the teacher.

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the new school year, and welcome back to another year of the HPSH Plaid Line newspaper.

Something new that’s exciting this year is we finally have a designated Newspaper/Journalism class here at Highland Park Senior High School. The class is held everyday in 4th hour in Room 2205, and is taught by Ms. Lingofelt. Right now, about 21 students are enrolled, which provides us with a great opportunity to produce more content and to get a more well rounded perspective on events happening around the school.

Also new this year: we have a new Co-Editor. Junior Abby Thompson has been selected as the new Co-Editor to serve alongside me this year.

Here’s to a great year!

James Farnsworth

Co-Editor, HPSH Plaid Line
