‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

By: Joseph Nelson

On May 5th, 2023, James Gunn ends one of his most successful trilogies. Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy started in 2014 when the group of misfits would take the theaters by storm, breaking their box office records of that year. The movie was so successful that we got to see a sequel 3 years later with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’. The sequel would go on to also break box office records and solidify ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as one of Hollywood’s best superhero movies.

6 years later, Marvel fans received dozens of content and movies that molds the plot for the third installment of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. The audience loved it! With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82% and a 95% from audience scores. James Gunn’s final send off of his 9 year Marvel project was the best work he has done for the Marvel franchise yet.

Many fans will claim that Marvels recent projects have been pretty meh. But after leaving the theater, those same fans will go on the internet to make videos and talk about how great of an emotional rollercoaster it was for them. Unlike many final Marvel installments, it is hard to find any criticism towards the film as the news filled their headlines with praises and put the film in the best light that they could.

It was truly shown on the big screen that he wanted to end the Guardians of the Galaxy on his own terms. When asked in an interview how he felt about his project finally sunsetting he said “[S]ad and proud.., But I feel like we did what we set out to do and I don’t think we could have done it much better than how we did it.”

Now, like many Marvel installments, just because the main series movies are over doesn’t mean that this will be the last time we will see these misfits on the big screen as Marvel has a tendency to include cameos in their main series films like the Avengers movies.

Overall, it was a bittersweet ending to the movie series that we have come to love and adore and it will be interesting to see what Marvel does next.

Star Nails review

By: Mae Skold

Star Nails is a nail salon in Eagan, Minnesota right outside of St. Paul. The business is family owned and operated and all of the employees are lovely.

You walk in and are immediately greeted at the front desk and helped by one of the various employees. They have a wonderful color selection you get to choose from right away.

Star Nails offers various services such as manicures, pedicures, acrylic sets, and more. The services are fast, and well done unlike other nail appointments that include a wait and a long time in the chair. Each worker is very talented and has a careful and thoughtful process. You can tell they all love what they do through the thought and care they put into their work. I have gotten acrylic nails in the past and the ones I got at Star Nails are by far the best.

In the back of the store they have comfortable spa chairs perfect for pedicures and foot massages. They also offer fun child services perfect for special occasions. They have a good employee or more for each service they offer so you know whatever spa treatment you choose it will be done right.

Perhaps the best part of this salon are its price points. Most acrylic sets come in at about $70-$80 but at Star Nails I paid $55 including a tip. Not only do their nails cost less than other places, the quality is much better so it’s a good deal all the way around. They also offer certain discounts to further lower the price such as a student discount and 10% off when paying in cash.

If you are in the Twin Cities area and looking for a cute nail salon and good nails on a budget, Star Nails should be your first choice.

What is NPR’s Tiny Desk?

By: Hannah Gliedman

History

Tiny Desk was created by Bob Boilen, a writer and music creator at NPR. At the time Bolien was a concert fanatic and was seeing 5 shows a night, every night for years.

In 2008 Bolien and a coworker, Stephen Thompson, a co-producer at NPR Music, attended a show featuring Laura Gibson, a small artist from Oregon. Boilen says “It was this awful bar — the speaker was pointing out the door, people were watching basketball games and cheering for their teams. [Laura] had a quiet voice, and we could barely hear her at all. Then an idea struck. Stephen jokingly said [to Gibson], ‘You should just come play in our office.’”

After a couple weeks Gibson came into play just at a desk with some microphones and a camera that was then put on to the fairly new, NPR YouTube channel. From there, NPR has invited hundreds of artists from all different fields of music: rap, pop, folk. Over time the segment has gained various recognitions and has multiple videos that have over 100 million views.

The Tiny Desk set up sometimes creates obstacles for artists, for others it causes no trouble. Because of its stripped back and authentic nature and sound, “There’s no hiding at Tiny Desk” says the sound producer at Tiny Desk, Niki Walker. Some bands like Wolf Alice and Big Thief have a hard time stripping back their music to fit the more acoustic mood. Other bands, especially jazz, like Moon Hooch says, “We didn’t have any trouble with the sound at Tiny Desk; we just went into subway mode.”

Greatest Of All Time

The most viewed Tiny Desk of all time is Dua Lipa’s at home concert which accumulated 107 million views in just 2 years. The video was part of the tiny desk concerts that were held during the pandemic, “at-home”, but because of the stripped back nature of the show it didn’t change much about the layout, if anything it gave the singer more room for electronics and instruments.

However; it’s widely considered that the best Tiny Desk of all time is Mac Miller’s. The concert was published in August of 2018 and has 101 million views. The performance came only a couple weeks before the singer’s untimely death. The set was the first time the artist performed tracks from his album, ‘Swimming’.

Other great performances on the Tiny Desk include Tyler, The Creator, who utilized the strippend back style of the show and performed with an emphasis on his background singers, The Cranberries, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Hozier, Adele, Lizzy MacAlpine, and many more.

Oromo people

By: Yumna Abajebel

The Oromo people are a native ethnic group from a region in Ethiopia called Oromia. They speak the language Oromo and are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. The majority of the people are Muslim and the other half is either Waaqeffannaa or Christians. Waaqeffannaa is an ethnic religion, they believe in Waaqa Gurr’ach. Which means ‘the black god’, meaning that their god is dark and mysterious and you cannot reach or see him.

The Oromo people also use a democratic system of governance. How it works is every eight nights, the Oromo people choose nine leaders that will remain in power for the next eight years.

The Oromo people are divided into two branches called Borana Oromo and Barento Oromo. Oromia contains 22 zones with different tribes.

The most common ones are Arsi zones and Bale zones. The Arsi zone is made up of 25 smaller cities and is bordered on the south by the Bale Zone. The Bale zone also contains 13 smaller cities within.

Oromo people are known for their coffee, food and dances. Their coffee comes from a city called Jimma. Their most popular and delicious food is the injera platter with cooked collard greens, red and yellow lentils, and spicy stew called doro wat.

The Oromo people are a unique and special ethnic group that is underrated and overlooked.

Be Afraid of the Dark

By: Ren King and Violet Hirman

Note: This is a student generated work of short fiction

The darkness is impenetrable, filtering through the open window and fluttering the curtains. My body is frozen firmly in place, limbs stiffer than boards of wood. The demon emerges from the shadows, pushing them out of the way like heavy, wet blankets. I can’t close my eyes, fear and the sheer force of the sleep paralysis propping them open, the only movement possible being my pupils following the progress of the shadowy form. He creeps closer, his slender form so sure of every step, his smile splitting his face so wide that the skin on his lips cracks and bleeds down his chin when he reveals his preternaturally perfect grin. I can only assume what his bloodshot eyes must look like, since he wears half a paper bag over his head, the eyeholes cut crudely into the brown paper sinking into shadows.

Fear strikes deeply like ice freezing my blood in place, and I begin to hyperventilate despite telling myself over and over again not to worry; it’s not real. But then his knees brush the edge of my bed. He hangs his head over mine, releasing a high pitched giggle that shatters at the end, his bleeding smile dripping with a mixture of the crimson liquid and saliva. I can’t shrink away, only stare up at his leering, smiling, giggling form as the substance splatters across the bridge of my nose. He lifts his hand slowly, long, slender fingers hovering above my face. Then he taps my nose thrice, and I let out a gasp as my body unfreezes.

Any minute now, I tell myself, scrambling out of bed with my chest heaving and hands quivering like dead leaves. But the demon stands where he was, gazing at me, his giggling interrupted every so often by delirious hiccups. The doctors told me it would disappear once I fully woke up! Once I could move again! So why is it still here? The childish laughter escalates into a maniacal cackle as I fumble to reach the window. The demon takes his time, stalking closer, husky breath rattling around his ribcage and his limbs jerking randomly as if he were a marionette. His head whips to the side, the bone cracking violently and a small sob escapes my throat before I steel my nerves and turn my back to him, hoisting myself out of the window. Every hair on my skin sticks straight up a nanosecond before I hear his anguished yowling, feel his gnarled fingernails digging into the skin on my back. I scream, tearing free and landing painfully on the lawn about four feet below.

My friend lives just across the street, I’ll be safe if I can reach his house. The road in question feels like I am taking a year to cross it, and I pound on the door, vividly aware of the screeching of my demon getting closer by the moment. I rap again, this time calling my friend’s name out hoarsely, panic and nausea making my voice weak and tortured. On the third smack of the wood, the door flies open, and I howl in defeat. My demon stands in the doorway, giggling and overflowing with so much excitement that he starts tearing at the skin on his face. Hooking his fingers into the socket of one empty eye, the other clawing at his indefinite smile, stretched so tightly now that the lips have split right down the middle.

In a flash I sprint back across the street and into my own home again, diving under the covers of my bed, shaking uncontrollably, telling myself over and over again that this will be over, that this is a dream.

Some time later, I open my eyes, blinking rapidly in the growing daylight, the birds chirping and seeming otherwise undisturbed in their tiny tree homes. Last night comes back like the repeated blows of a sledgehammer, and I press my nails into the palm of my hand to keep from panicking. I calmly get out of bed and walk to my friend’s house, not even bothering to change out of my plaid pajama pants and pale blue sweatshirt. He answers immediately, and assures me everything was fine last night.

Back at my house, I shiver at the memories, then tug my shirt over my head to change. I freeze, noticing for the first time the stinging pain accompanying the four faint scars lining my back, an everlasting reminder of the danger of my own imagination.

Tarot cards

By: Maya Breininger

Tarot cards, (pronounced tare-oh) are a way of mediating with your spiritual side, and connecting with what the universe is trying to tell you. They are a method of translating between your internal desires and the world, they give you advice, and they’re a fun way to connect with yourself.

Tarot cards originate from the early 1430s in Italy, and it is custom for them to be given to you as gifts. It contains five suits; Swords, Cups, Sticks, Wands, Major Arcana and Minor Arcana. Each suit represents a different law of spirituality, and depending on how you set up your cards, each one can mean different things.

When picking your cards, the spiritual pull to them is the most important thing to consider. You can visit your local mall with a Witch healing store inside, or a small business associated with witchcraft. The location is irrelevant; you can just as easily purchase them online. As long as you feel a sort of connection to the cards you pick, you have picked the right cards.

Seeing as the cards are generally tools of guiding you through your life, there are different set-ups that will tell you different things about your life. For example, a Celtic Cross spread will allow you to identify your present life, your current problems, and what obstacles lay in your way.

There are card spreads that will reveal your past, your present, your love life, your problems and your ambitions. You can also create your own spreads, and once you’re comfortable with your cards you can use them as you like.

Tarot cards are part of many different spiritual rituals, and if you are a person who is trying to achieve the witch healing lifestyle, I definitely recommend you start by purchasing your own pack of tarot cards.

How to make a tres leche cake! (Part 1)

By: Jessica Garcia Saligan

What is a tres leche cake ?

Tres leche is a traditional cake from Mexico. Tres leche cake is a sponge cake soaked with a sweet milk mixture. It’s a very popular dish in a lot of Mexican restaurants!

This cake recipe will take 10 hrs 30 minutes to make because to get an amazing taste you will have to let the cake soak up all syrupy milk mixture for 8 hours or overnight. When it’s time to serve, the cake will be moist and not soggy.

There are going to be 2 parts for this recipe. In Part 1 I will be explaining on how to make the cake part, and in Part 2 I will explain on how to make the syrups, milk mixture, and everything else!

For the cake:

Tools:

  • Big bowl
  • 2 small bowls
  • Wisk
  • Measuring cups
  • Strainer
  • Hand mixture
  • Large pan
  • 8 1⁄2 or 9 inch pan

Ingredients for the Sponge Cake

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour or cake flour, sifted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 6 large eggs, room temperature

You will want to start off with preheating your oven to 350 degrees.

For all 6 eggs, you’re going to want to separate the egg whites and the yolk into small bowls.

In another bowl you’re going to get your strainer and put it on top of the bowl then slowly pour in the flour.

Set the bowl of flour aside and grab your egg yolks, big bowl and hand mixer.

You’re going to pour the egg yolk into the big bowl and mix until all together.

  • Add one teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Add half a cup of sugar

Set your hand mixer into high speed and beat well until you see the yolk become a lighter color but keep mixing until it starts to develop volume. Mixture should be smooth not runny.

You’re going to want to wash your hand mixer.

In another bowl, you’re going to pour in your egg whites and beat on high speed then add in half of the sugar slowly while mixing the egg whites.
Keep mixing until soft peaks start to form, then add the remaining sugar.

Your mixture should be light and fluffy!

You should now have three bowls: one with the flour, one with the egg white mixture, and the other with the egg yolk mixture.

Grab your yolk mixture and slowly add in your flour and egg whites, the cake batter should be smooth, thick and fluffy.

Once you’re done mixing, slowly you’re going to want to grab your 8 1⁄2 or 9 inch pan and pour in the mixture.

Also, make sure the large pan is on the bottom and the 8 1⁄2 or 9 inch pan is on top.

Place your cake very carefully into the oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 40-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

To finish the rest of the cake make sure to check out part 2, coming out soon!

True Team

By: Ellie Moore

At a normal track meet only 8 out of 24 runners score but at a True Team track meet all racers score. Getting last place will only score you 1 point but your points still count. The point of these true team meets is to find which team has the best depth throughout the team. You may be able to win normal meets because you have 1 or 2 runners constantly in the top 3, but to win a true team meet you have to have all your runners placing high.

There are only 3 True Team meets in the track season: True Team Conference, Sections, and State. In order for your team to make it to state you need to be one of the top teams in the section, so not every team gets to race at True Team State.

Unlike normal track state, to qualify for True Team Track State you need to qualify as a team. You can’t qualify as an individual.

Saint Paul Public Schools have a disadvantage when they compete in the True Team Section meet. Since SPPS doesn’t have the insurance for pole vaulting, we automatically get 0 points for it, starting us up to 40 points behind the rest of the schools.

Conference True Team took place at Central High School on Wednesday May third. Central took first place with 644.5 and Highland got second with 538. Como Park was third with 413 points.

The Section True Team meet was May ninth at Mounds View where Highland Park competed against Edina, Minneapolis South, Minneapolis Southwest, Minneapolis Washburn, Mounds View, North St. Paul, Roseville, St. Louis Park, and St. Paul Central.

Mounds View ended up winning with 1141.5 points with Roseville coming in second with 1115 points. Highland Park got fifth with 623 points.

State will be May twentieth and twenty-first at Stillwater High School. The top team from each section will move on to state and compete against each other to see who has the most depth on their team.

What is FFA?

By: Tasha Cudinski

FFA stands for Future Farmers of America. FFA is a national agriculture organization founded in 1928. There are FFA chapters in schools across America and even a few chapters in Puerto Rico.

FFA has many contests relating to agriculture that FFA members are free to compete in. Most contests have three levels, regional, state, and nationals; contestants start by competing at regional level with other nearby chapters and then move on to state and eventually regionals if you place high enough.

Each FFA chapter has a leadership team made up of students in FFA. In order to be eligible for an FFA leadership position you have to be enrolled in at least one semester of an agriculture class per year. The job of the leadership team is to establish order, plan club activities and organize events such as agriculture day or ag day for short. In the case of a single chapter the leaders are chosen by the teacher(s) in charge, but for state or national leaders there is a choosing committee who decides which candidates would be best for the role.

Highland Park Senior High has an FFA chapter, which meets once a month on Wednesday. Anyone is free to show up to meetings and you do not have to join a competition to attend the monthly meetings. While FFA has competitions and our school does participate in them, the club meetings have fun activities like painting, and cookie decorating. FFA meetings are also used to give members, who are interested in competing, the chance to learn more about what competitions are available, and what times and locations they are taking place at.
