Tham Luang cave rescue

By: Mila Hart

On June 23, 2018, a soccer team made up of twelve boys aged eleven to sixteen and their twenty five year old coach, became trapped in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in the Chiangmai Rai province in northern Thailand.

In mid July, the caves close because they flood due to the monsoon season. The boys entered the cave on June 23 thinking that they would not be at risk of getting trapped by rising waters.

It was not uncommon for the local kids to play and visit the cave when it wasn’t monsoon season. The boys thought they had more time before that season would begin, but they were unfortunately mistaken.

They became stranded in the caves after a sudden and continuous downpour blocked all exits. The rain would only get worse and worse because it was the beginning of the monsoon season. This means that if they did not find the boys as soon as possible then there would be no hope of getting them out.

After being missing for ten days, British divers found the missing boys perched on a rocky ledge. After being located the boys were joined by Thai navy seals and received food, water, blankets, and minor medical aid.

Once the boys were found, they had to act fast to get them out of the cave. Monsoon season would soon be hitting at full force and even though they’re were many engineers and volunteers working on pumping water out of the cave it would not be enough to stop the water from rising at extreme speeds.

The cave is a twisting, turning six mile complex of narrow passages. The boys were trapped two and a half miles into the cave, most of which was nearly completely underwater. When cave diving you are fully submerged in a narrow space and can’t see more than four inches in front of you because the water is dark and muddy. So, this meant that the only way to safely remove the boys was to sedate them so they wouldn’t panic, put them in special gear so they wouldn’t drown, and have them be guided out of the caves by professional cave divers.

Getting all of the boys out of the cave took three days. Three to four boys, plus their coach being removed from the cave each day. Once each of them made it out of the cave they were immediately put into ambulances and taken to the hospital.

All of the boys and the coach lived. The rescue effort involved over 100,000 people. These people were divers, many types of rescue workers, representatives from around 100 governmental agencies, police officers, and soldiers.

Book review on ‘The Year After You’

By: Lauren Kottke & Ella Sutherland

‘The Year After You’ by Nina de Pass, is a heartfelt story about a girl named Cara. She is learning to let people in, and love others as well as herself.

Summary (contains spoilers):
On New Year’s Eve last year, Cara and her best friend G, went to a party. At the party something happens that gets G really upset. She ends up very drunk and tries to drive home, but before she can, Cara takes the keys away and drives because she is sober.

While they are driving they get into a car crash and G ends up dying. Cara feels very strong survivor guilt because she was the one driving. For a while — almost a year— she shut herself out from everyone and lost most of the joy she got from being with G.

She starts attending a boarding school that her mom decided she should go to because she can see that she is not happy. When she first gets there a girl named Ren shows her around. Ren turns out to be her roommate and her first friend at the school.

Cara has a lot of trouble letting Ren in, or even considering Ren her friend, because she doesn’t want to replace G. Ren introduced Cara to her other friends, Fred and Hector. Immediately, she feels something different with Hector, but she keeps him at an arm’s length away.

She has so many walls built up that it is hard to see the real her. Ren and Hector know that something is wrong and they want to know what it is. They try to get her to open up and it takes a long long time, but eventually they figure out what happened.

For Cara it felt good to get it off her chest, except that wasn’t the full truth. The reason G had been so upset that night was because she had made things official with her boyfriend, and then later that night she saw him cheating on her with Cara. The guilt Cara felt was extreme and that is why it was so hard for her to open herself up.

Cara and Hector develop a more romantic relationship. He gets her like no one else does because he has his own problems. They become very close and that is when she finally tells him the whole truth. At first he is caught off guard, but then he realizes that she has changed and she truly does feel bad.

Our reviews:
Ella: I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a very sad but amazing book. I loved Ren, she was my favorite character by far. I loved her energy and how nice she was to everyone. The romance between Hector and Cara really played out well in my opinion. I loved them together. I really liked how while she was finding friends, she was also finding herself. When she let these people in, she didn’t know it at the time, but it was a way of forgiving herself. Overall I give the book 4 out of 5 stars.

Lauren: This book was written really well. My favorite character was Ren as well. She had such an important role in getting Cara to be happy and find herself. Ren also had a very hard time, but she was always there for her friends and is just such a good person. I really loved the flashbacks to when Cara went to her old school, and G was still alive. It really made the connection to G stronger, which made the book even more sad. I give the book 4 out of 5 stars as well.

We both loved this book so much and we think you should definitely read it if you have a chance!

How does a student’s homework load affect their mental health?

By: Grace Blumer-Lamotte

Throughout a student’s high school years, freshman (9th), sophomore (10th), junior (11th), and senior (12th), they will experience some type of stress, whether it be physical or mental. It can also vary if they are experiencing other things outside of their academic life.

Some ways that stress affects the brain is by shrinking the prefrontal cortex. According to Touro, “Chronic stress has a shrinking effect on the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning. While stress can shrink the prefrontal cortex, it can increase the size of the amygdala, which can make the brain more receptive to stress.”

A few symptoms of stress to the human body include a headache (referring to the image provided), exhaustion, sleep deprivation, stomach problems, and weight loss.

The grade that the student is in normally depends on the homework load. Every grade is different. All grades have important tests or other events going on. Especially juniors. Juniors commonly have to take the ACT during the year.

When students get more homework, they are generally a lot more stressed out. At Highland, we currently have 7 classes a day: 4 core classes and 3 electives. If every class gives you homework, that is a lot of homework in one night for the student.

I interviewed 4 students. One from each grade. I asked these questions:

  • How many hours do you spend on homework a night?
  • How does your homework load affect your mental health?

The freshman answered, “I usually spend an hour and a half or until I eat dinner. My homework load can affect my mental health greatly. I hardly ever have time to do anything I actually enjoy anymore. Whenever I procrastinate it gets even worse.”

The sophomore answered, “I spend only around two hours on homework at night. Since I don’t have much homework, it doesn’t really bother my mental health.”

The junior answered, “I spend around two to three hours on homework if it is an easy night. If it is a hard night, I spend around four to five hours. The homework load destroys my mental health. On weekends, when I don’t have homework, I am extremely happy. But when I do have homework, I relate to the senior. I have no energy to do anything else afterwards.”

The senior answered, “I spend no hours on homework. I finish most of it at school. But put into account that I also have 2 study hall hours. I’d say when I do have homework at home it’s the most draining thing ever. Once I am done, I have no energy to do anything else.”

Helping Ukraine

By: Carla Tizcareno

With all the commotion going on with Russia and Ukraine, there are lots of questions going around. It’s hard to watch such a major and damaging event unfold from afar, but there are many ways that you, or someone you know, can help.

Donations are an easy and accessible way to help Ukraine during this difficult time. Donating money or resources is an extremely helpful and important thing. The thing is, after or during major events such as this one, many scammers take advantage of it to get money. It’s important to always check the source of the donations, or where they are going. Always do your research before you give and if you can, you should report any suspicious activity with donating sites.

UNICEF is a great example of a trustworthy organization that you can donate to. It was made almost 70 years ago. Their mission is to aid children around the world with health, education, safe and clean water, and even HIV prevention. They now have a specific spot to donate to Ukraine. Here is the link to their Ukraine donation site:

There is also UNHCR, which is an organization that focuses on helping people find refuge during dangerous events, like a war. On their website, there are multiple spots that lead to donating to Ukraine. Here is the link for their website:

The International Committee of the Red Cross is a great spot to donate as well. They are trying to send help and assistance to war victims, or victims of other situations of violence. They are a Switzerland based organization that is also aiding the people in Afghanistan.

There are many other organizations that can help as well. These are just some of the examples of great resources for donating to help the cause. Below are some others that are good too:

The history of ‘Vogue’

By: Julia Swee

‘Vogue’ is a high end fashion magazine based in New York City, New York. ‘Vogue’ is currently one of the most powerful and recognized publication businesses of the fashion industry, but it took a while before it would ever reach the amount of fame it has today.

Arthur Baldwin Turnure was an American businessman in New York in 1892, and had been in the market for a new weekly newspaper. He founded ‘Vogue’ with the intent to create a publication that celebrated the “ceremonial side of life”. The first issue was published on December 17 of the same year, with a cover price of just 10 cents.

The very first editor of ‘Vogue’ was a woman by the name of Josephine Redding, who served from 1892 until 1900 and is credited for naming the magazine. At this time, women in high positions was very uncommon, and the hiring of Redding was a step forward for the women’s rights movement.

For the first 17 years of its existence, ‘Vogue’ was published every week for the general public. This changed when a largely known American publisher, by the name of Conde Montrose Nast, purchased ‘Vogue’ in 1909. This helped to grow the magazine, changing the targeted audience to both males and females and changing the publishing to every other week.

In July of 1932, ‘American Vogue’ released its first color photograph on the cover of the magazine. This sparked more interest in the magazine as people were attracted to the pictures.

As photography and color began to transform the magazine throughout the years, it gained more and more traction. In December of 1962, Diana Vreeland became editor in chief of the magazine.

After Vreeland came Grace Mirabella, who took up the position in 1971 through 1988. Mirabella enhanced the magazine to value many different interests by adding texts with interviews, arts coverage, and serious health pieces.

As Mirabella finished up her time with the magazine, Anna Wintour took her place at the end of 1988. To this day, Wintour is widely appreciated for her work on the magazine, and the fashion industry in general.

‘Vogue’ has been around for many many years, and throughout these years the magazine has influenced everyday lifestyle and fashion within America.

Breaking down the top moves in the 2022 MLB free agency

By: Abby Altman

Carlos Correa-Minnesota Twins

3 year/$3.5 mil

In a deal that nearly nobody was expecting, Carlos Correa signed with the Twins for 3 years, with an opt out option after each of the first 2 years. While this is a massive win for the Twins, most fans were expecting to see Correa with a larger contract, looking at up to 10 years. Correa chose the smaller of his options, however, and the Twins are looking to go for a title, rather than the rebuild many were predicting.

Trevor Story-Boston Red Sox

6 years/$140 mil

The Red Sox were quiet for a lot of the offseason, waiting until just one top ranked SS was left in free agency to snag Trevor Story. Story had told the league he was only willing to play SS, and would not be moved to 2nd base if he was signed. The Red Sox appeared to have changed his mind, however, with Xander Bogaerts filling in the SS position, moving Story to 2nd. Bogaerts is a more dangerous hitter compared to Story, but Story’s defensive skills have been higher in the past. Overall, this is a complicated signing for the Red Sox, moving players all over the diamond to make room for Story.

Freddie Freeman-Los Angeles Dodgers

6 years/ $162 mil

The defending World Series champ has been an Atlanta Brave for the last 12 seasons, and his off season was highly anticipated. The Dodgers lost Cory Seager to free agency earlier in the offseason, but made up for it nicely by landing the 2020 NL MVP, and defending WS champion for 6 years. Freeman batted .300 in 2021, and should help the already scary Dodgers attempt for another WS title this year.

Kris Bryant-Colorado Rockies

7 years/ $182 mil

Although the team seemed interested, it never seemed likely that Colorado would land Bryant, especially not with a contract this monster in size. This signing is a good sign for Rockies fans, showing that they’re looking to add to what is already a decent rotation. Bryant will presumably play left field, alongside Charlie Blackmon.

Nelson Cruz-Washington Nationals

1 year/ $15 mil

After being traded from Minnesota to the Tampa Bay Rays, it is likely that Cruz will keep signing small contracts for just 1 or 2 years at a time. Cruz is 41 years old, and doesn’t have the mobility he used to have to play outfield, keeping him solely at the DH position. Minnesota utilized the best of Cruz’s DH abilities, with him hitting 76 home runs in a Twins uniform in just 3 years. It is likely that we won’t see Cruz in the league for much longer, so any ability to sign him is a good signing. The Nationals, coming off a 65-97 season, are finding themselves in a difficult situation, so hopefully all goes to plan, with Cruz in the lineup.

Jorge Soler-Miami Marlins

3 years/$36 mil

In 2021, the Marlins scored the 2nd fewest runs in the MLB, and Soler should quickly become the hottest bat in Miami. Even though Soler is a bit of a wildcard when he steps up to the plate, where you could see a towering home run, or yet another strikeout every other at bat. Regardless, the Marlins haven’t had the all star bat necessary to be contenders. Signing Soler should bring a big enough name to Miami to put them in the mix, but the Marlins still don’t have enough tools all around to make themselves contenders. With a few more big name signings, the Marlins could throw their name into the playoff ring, but for now Soler is just a small piece of the puzzle.

Anthony Rizzo-New York Yankees

2 years/$32 mil

While it’s not the first base signing that many Yankees fans were hoping for, signing Rizzo is an okay addition for the Yankees lineup. Although he isn’t Freddie Freeman, Rizzo is a solid lefty batter and a good defensive first basemen, which is exactly what the Yankees need, especially after trading Luke Voit. In 2021, Rizzo batted .248, fitting in nicely with the Yankees combined .231 batting average. This isn’t the signing the Yankees needed to become runaway favorites for the AL East, but Rizzo is a big name and big names win games.

Why McDonald’s ice cream machines are always broken

By: Toby Martin-Kohls

There are many globally recognized symbols, such as the peace sign or a heart. There are also many globally recognized brands such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Mcdonald’s.

The Golden Arches are a worldwide recognized symbol. In 2019, Mcdonald’s had 38,695 restaurants in 119+ countries.

They pride themselves on the consistency of their food. Fries at one location should, and will, taste exactly the same at a location 3000mi away.

However, one item stands out as an exception from this philosophy; there always seems to be a broken ice cream machine at Mcdonald’s. The issue has been so widespread it has become a joke and a meme of sorts.

Several mainstream fast food companies such as Wendy’s, Burger King, In-n-Out, and Chick-fil-a use ice cream machines from the same company McDonald’s uses, but only McDonald’s seems to be the ones that never work.

Mcdonald’s uses the model C602 machine made by a company named Taylor. McDonald’s and Taylor go way back and have been business partners since each was established. Even their headquarters are close to each other in the state of Illinois.

93% of McDonald’s restaurants are franchised. This means that they are owned and operated by independent local business owners. This means they are left to pay any repairs needed.

When you become a Mcdonald’s franchisee, you sign a contract with McDonald’s agreeing that you will abide by their rules and regulations and make sure the restaurant is standardized to the rest of the brand.

In 2003, McDonald’s put in their agreement that all franchisees would be required to use the C602 model from Taylor.

Ice cream is dairy, and it is needs to be stored correctly in order to be safe to consume. The machine has a bunch of pipes that run through it all day with ice cream. So once a day, a cleaning cycle must be completed.

The cleaning process takes about 4 hours and is usually the first reason you are given as to why the ice cream machines are not working. Because the process takes so long, it makes sense to run the cleaning cycle overnight.

The first employees coming in the next day would see one of two messages on the user interface. The heat cycle was complete and that the machine was ready to use or that the cycle failed. The machine does not tell you what the problem was, and only that it failed.

It is worth noting that the machine cannot be used until it runs a cleaning cycle. It is locked until it has been completed. So the employee tries to run the heat cycle again. This takes another four hours during operating hours of the store.

So, a franchisee must call a repair technician from Taylor if they want their machine fixed. Taylor is the only company authorized to repair or maintain these machines for Mcdonald’s. If they called anyone else to fix it, it would void their contract.

According to invoices from some Mcdonald’s franchisees, the repair technicians are quite expensive. One can expect to pay around $150 for the first half-hour of labor and travel and hundreds more dollars for each additional 15 minutes of extra labor.

This is the decision franchisees must make. They can deal with angry customers who want ice cream, or they can fork over tons of money to get their machine fixed that very well might break again soon.

According to an acquisition pitch from Taylor, they stated that 25% of their revenue comes from recurring parts and services business. Taylor can rely on machines breaking and having income from McDonald’s.

Taylor provides an instruction manual to the restaurants for the machine but provides a different use for exclusively Taylor technicians. The information needed to fix the machine effectively is only given to technicians.

Jeremy O’Sullivan and Melissa Nelson set out to create a product, the Kytch device, that would help restaurants diagnose problems easier from the intentionally tricky UI. They succeeded and was a hit, as many restaurants started using their product. McDonald’s then sent out a memo that “McDonald’s and Taylor have recently determined that the Kytch device creates a potential very serious safety risk for the crew or technician attempting to clean or repair the machine.” They strongly recommended that franchisees stop using the product and that they will void their warranty if they don’t.

McDonald’s is in contact with another approved company to solve the same issue Kytch solved. Their partner is Powerhouse Dynamics. Well, good thing it’s not Taylor. Well, just on the outside. Powerhouse Dynamics is owned by the same company that owns Taylor. Their device takes the place of Kytch and still gives the user frustrating interfaces so that they can make money off repair services.

Taylor has no incentive to improve their product because they hold a monopoly in the ice cream maker business and again, make 25% of their revenue of on repair services. McDonald’s is okay with this because the financial burden falls on the restaurant franchisees.

Kytch is currently suing McDonald’s for 900 million dollars. They are also suing for defamation.

If you want to see if the McDonald’s near you, or anywhere, has a broken ice cream machine, you can look at mcbroken.com.

‘In The Heights’ movie review

By: Liv Miller

‘In The Heights’ is a musical drama that was released in 2021. It is based off of the Broadway musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda, in which its first performance was put on back in July of 2005. After the musical was a huge success on Broadway, Lin Manuel had the idea to bring it to the big screen.

Some background information on this movie is that ‘In The Heights’ takes place in a community in Manhattan called “Washington Heights” where its population is mainly Latina/Latino. The movie follows certain people in this community, and their lives, family, jobs, dreams, and what they want for themselves in the future.

This movie is very cultural based, and highlights Latino culture through certain styles of music and dance. It also tries to highlight the struggles of a minority community and how they are limited by where they come from and how little opportunities they are given by being a part of that community.

I don’t want to give away much about the movie in my review but I liked how the writers made you feel like you really knew the characters. I got pulled into their stories by the music and by how all of their relationships were written and portrayed. The characters mainly communicated their struggles in the songs which I liked. The writers did a good job with making the viewers invested in the story and feel like they are also a part of the community that is featured in the “heights”. The way the characters all interacted like a family made me sympathize with them and connect with the characters more.

I noticed that at the beginning of the movie most of the characters either were struggling with achieving their goals, didn’t know what their goals/dreams were, or hadn’t made an effort to achieve them yet. Throughout the movie I saw each character gain a better understanding of their dreams, and by the end saw a majority of the characters happy with how their life had turned out.

Overall, I really liked the movie. It was cool to watch because it centered around a type of community that’s never really been highlighted in other musicals and films. I liked that the storyline was very realistic and it’s based off of a real place and real issues that are happening in certain communities. I also liked the music and dance styles they included in the movie, because it highlighted the culture of the people this story was about, instead of just having the classic music and dance styles typically used in other musicals.

If you want to see ‘In The Heights’ it is available on Hulu and HBO Max.

Seed oils are killing you

By: Yussuf Omar

What are they?

Seed oils (or vegetable oils) are highly processed oils derived from seeds. The most commonly used seed oils are: canola (rapeseed), soybean, and palm.

These oils are mainly extracted using hexane. This is due to the efficiency of this method since over 90% of the oil is retained and the substance’s solubilizing ability is kept intact.

The problem with this method is that hexane is poisonous to humans, but the horrors of what’s done to these oils doesn’t stop there. After the hexane extraction, most of the oil becomes rancid and stinks, so manufacturers then bleach and deodorize these oils so consumers don’t have to deal with the smell. Instead, you’re left to deal with the harms these rancid oils do to your body.

Oxidized and Rancid

Seeds oils are full of poly-unsaturated fatty acids, and due to their double bond, these fats are very unstable. The improper storage of these oils, by exposing them to heat and light early on, only makes things worse, consequently accelerating the oxidation process. Once these toxic oxidized oils are consumed, they lead to oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Oxidative stress and inflammation then leads to an array of diseases.

Another consequence of the overheating of seed oils is the creation of trans fats, the accumulation of this fat is known to lead to heart disease and other illnesses. These oils also tend to accrue in cells in the form of linoleic acid. The storage of these oxidized lipids lead to cells being prone to oxidation and skin cancer.

Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio

Fatty acids are essential to the human body, and since we don’t naturally create them we’re required to get them from our food instead. The ratio between these two fats is ideally supposed to be 1:1, but due to overconsumption recently the ratio is on average 20:1 now.

Seed oils are high in Omega 6, which tends to usually cause a little inflammation, but since Omega 3’s are naturally anti-inflammatory the two are supposed to balance out. Because of the sheer abundance of Omega 6’s in seed oils, the inflammation easily wins out.

Healthy alternatives

After being bombarded with all the negatives regarding seed oils, you’re probably in search of a healthy alternative. The good news is that you don’t have to look far; the ideal alternatives are likely in your kitchen already.

Saturated fats and monounsaturated fats are your friend when it comes to cooking oils, these fats are much more stable and can withstand high temperatures without oxidation. Grass-fed butter, ghee, and tallow are all great animal based sources of these fats, while avocado, coconut, and olive oil are great plant based sources. You can find all of these oils with minimal processing, and each one will be exponentially better for your health.
