Bill O’Reilly: Dropped from Fox News

Recently, Bill O’Reilly was dropped from Fox News, and lost his slot at 7 pm with his show The O’Reilly Factor. Mr. O’Reilly had reportedly sexuallly harrased many different female colleague at Fox News. After the story began to spread, more than 50 advertisers removed their ads from his show, including popular Fox advertiser, Jenny Craig.

Shortly after the show started losing many of its sponsors, Fox decided to let go of O’Reilly. He responded, “Over the past 20 years at Fox News, I have been extremely proud to launch and lead one of the most successful news programs in  history, which has consistently informed and entertained millions of Americans and significantly contributed to building Fox into the dominant news network in television.” He also was dissapointed in having to leave as he said: “It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims.”

After O’Reilly was let go from Fox News, he decided to start his own new podcast called “No Spin News.” The podcast is only available to premium members of his website.

According to Rupert Murdoch (the head of 21st Century Fox) he was the one who decided to let him go, but also had much praise for his show:  “By ratings standards, Bill O’Reilly is one of the most accomplished TV personalities in the history of cable news,” Murdoch wrote, “In fact, his success by any measure is indisputable.”

Many people have praise for Bill O’Reilly, and his conservative views on his popular talk show, but Fox was right to take action in this situation.

Arkansas death penalty

Arkansas carried out the U.S.’s first double execution in 17 years on April 24th, 2017. The last double execution to occur happened in Texas, in 2000, when the state executed two killers.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, or DPIC, Jack Jones and Marcel Williams were the inmates who were put on death row and executed on April 24, 2017. Both Jack Jones and Marcel Williams were convicted for murder, kidnapping, and rape, and were sent to prison with life sentences. These two were the second and third people executed in a eight day period.

After the two men’s trials, the Governor of Arkansas had to make a tough choice of whether to let them live with life sentences or to issue a death penalty. According to CBS News, the Governor decided to issue the death penalty, and the jury voted with Governor Hutchinson, backing his decision to issue the death penalty.

One horrific reason, that Governor Hutchinson used to justify his decision, was that the state needed to use up its supply of midazolam, a drug used for lethal injections before it expired.

Pharmacists have been hesitant to supply states with the drug midazolam because they don’t want to be the cause of someone’s death. Midazolam has also been involved in several botched executions according to Live Science. The term “botched” is used as in the drug either didn’t work as it was supposed to, and left the person conscious, or the IV was placed incorrectly and the drug never fully worked.

This story truly became interesting when the details of the other Arkansas executions were uncovered. According to lawyers, and other media sources present, almost all of the deaths were botched in some way, ways that would make the death slow and tortuous.

Immediately after the injection of Jack Jones, the lawyer of Marcel Williams filed an emergency stay in federal district court. His reasoning was that Jones’ execution had seemed inhumane and painful, so he made this last ditch attempt to try and keep his client alive. The state completely disregarded this saying his claims were: “Utterly baseless.”

Witnesses of the Jones injection said it took the officials in charge 45 minutes to try to find a place for the injection in his neck. When they were finished sticking him in the neck, unsuccessfully trying to find a place to kill him, they eventually had to move elsewhere on his body. When the poor, scared man was finally injected, the officials didn’t wait the required 5 minutes to perform a consciousness check, and he was gulping air and struggling against the restraints.

The execution of Williams was held off until 9:30 pm Central Time after one judge accepted the appeal for a stay in court, and a short uneventful hearing took place. The Williams injection looked much less painful.

This double execution was part of a schedule set forth by the Governor to execute eight people in eleven days. Of those eight scheduled, only four have happened with the others receiving stays in court, and/or some clemency.

Why is it so hard for the government to find an effective injection that kills painlessly and quickly? This question will need to be answered if executions are to continue, but at the same time, the government could care less, after all, it would be a shame if their store of drugs for lethal injection went to waste.

Ordway Honors Concert

The Ordway Honors Concert is a district wide opportunity for students, from various SPPS schools, to perform at the Ordway Center and show off their talents. The performances include: choir, band, and orchestra. For students to be able to participate, they had to audition at their school and be accepted.

I interviewed a friend who participated in the concert. She said there were 3 rehearsals – 2 of which were at Central, and 1 at the Ordway. Each rehearsal was about 4 hours long, but the piece she played was about 20-25 minutes long. She said that the students worked with professional conductors, which was really exciting for her.

Her favorite part about participating was getting to play challenging pieces. It gave her a reason to practice more and get better. What she didn’t enjoy most was that she missed a lot of school days, which made her fall behind in class a bit.

Overall, she said performing at the Ordway was great and exciting; she got to meet and work with new people. It is a great experience to work with people across SPPS. She said she would recommend auditioning to people who are dedicated to music, and are willing to put the time into practicing. She said she would do it again if she was given the chance.

Cinco De Mayo 2017

On May 4th, Highland is going to have its Cinco de Mayo celebration and performance.

Last year’s performance included dances like, Bachata, Cumbia, Duranguense, traditional Aztec dances, and several Folklorico dances, most of which were choreographed by students.

I asked Sunthany, a junior at Highland, her thoughts on last year’s Cinco performance and she said, “I liked how the whole stage was decorated to fit the occasion.” She also said, “I liked how they brought in dancers other than the students.”

I also talked to Jennifer, another junior, and she said, “In my opinion, some of the dances were a little too long. They were good but they kinda went on for a long time.”

Xitlaly, a freshman, was also asked about the performance and said “I’m glad that Highland takes out time to celebrate different cultures. And I’ve heard that the performance is good. I’m glad all 7th hours get to go.”

The performance, and celebration, is put on by Union Latina, an after school group here at Highland, to celebrate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This year, the dances were choreographed mostly by the students, and the art and decorations were made here at Highland.

This year’s performance is going to be in the auditorium during 7th hour on Thursday, May 4th, and all classes were invited to attend. A second performance will take place after school at 7:00 pm. There will be a dinner held before the performance, at 6:00 pm, in the cafeteria.

The Timberwolves new logo

The Timberwolves, Minnesota’s professional basketball team, unveiled their new logo for the 2017-2018 season. This change came on April 11, 2017, during halftime of their final home game of the season against Oklahoma City.

The logo change is to stand for the new era that is coming; the Timberwolves franchise is trying to move in a new direction. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this new era of Timberwolves basketball than with the unveiling of our new logo, in front of our dedicated fans, on Fan Appreciation Night,” said Timberwolves CEO Ethan Casson. The CEO later went on to say how the new logo is the way to a new exciting path.

The logo is only the first surrounding their new face. With new leaders on and off of the court, the Timberwolves are planning on revealing new uniforms this summer along with a remodel of the Target Center. The remodel is going to add new seats, more space, and a new court design.

The logo was in the process of being created for 12 months. It was designed by the Timberwolves ownership, team executives, the NBA, and design expert Rodney Richardson of RARE Design. The new logo is a combination of past logos. It includes some of the same colors but with a new refreshed hue of the blue and green. The new colors include midnight blue, aurora green, lake blue, moonlight grey, and frost white. The logo also still includes a wolf, but this time it is howling. Wolves use their howl to warn others; it shows their fierce side. Wolves also use the howl to reconnect and bond as a family. The new logo is a perfect new face to the up and coming season for the Wolves.

Hair trends

Many people like to style their hair in many different ways, which is also very unique. You might be interested in trying some of the styles yourself!

But, just doing your hair, in general, is also really good, because you should fix your hair before going anywhere so people won’t stare at you like something is odd about you.

Now, there are many hairstyles that are popular. They come from celebrities, what society thinks is trending, and what people do to their hair.

There are many hair trends; let me tell you about 7 of them:

  1. Super Sleek: The straight, shiny, and center-parted hair is one of the biggest trends for 2017. But you should have your hair look healthy, not fried. Also, have a mist of heat protectant through your hair before touching it with a straightener.
  2. High Pony: Slick your hair up, which should look all the way up. It should look nice in a rumpled texture or stick-straight. The high ponytail adds both an elegance and ease to every ensemble. Also, a bonus tip – the tighter you secure it, the more lifted your face looks.
  3. Flat Waves: It should be in between beachy or bouncy; the flat iron waves are the new curling iron waves. You could also create a bend in your hair just by pushing your hair upward, then make the shape with a few clamps of your iron. Release and repeat. Also, just keep your ends straight for the finish.
  4. Growing-Out Slag: The slag haircut was a hit in 2016. The hair just passes the shoulders and the bangs are long enough to be split down in the middle
  5. The Hair Flip: For the hair flip,  you just have to flip your hair from one side to the other, creating tons of volume as a result.
  6. Slick and Shiny: The slick, shiny hair only looks like it’s sopping wet. This is also a 2017 hair trend that looks just as good like on the runway and IRL. Mostly work with a heavy dose of the styling cream, from your roots to the mid-way length, which will hold a little bit of shine in your hair.
  7. Lastly, The Golden Bronde: This color is the perfect warm-toned hair color that will be well suited on all skin tones.

There are many hairstyles that are trending, and these are just a few examples that you may be interested in. Or, you can always just do your hair however you like.
