12 people killed in California bar

On November 8th, 2018, another mass shooting occurred at a local college bar in California. There was a total of 12 people that were shot and killed that day.

The gunman responsible for this tragedy was a 28-year-old former Marine, Ian David Long, who went by David Long. He was divorced, with no known children, or owned property. According to investigators, he used to hang around the area of the shooting often. He had a few previous run ins with the law where there was a disturbance at his home. Apparently, he was acting irrational according to police.

David Long reportedly ended his shooting spree by killing himself inside the bar.

The shooting took place at Borderline Bar & Grill, a popular bar in Thousand Oaks, California. The bar is a popular place for local college students. Police say they were surprised that this shooting took place in this city, because it is considered to be one of the safest cities in the United States.

David Long’s friends did not describe him as someone who would commit this horrific crime. One of his high school friends said, “The Ian I knew would not do this.” Another one said, “I don’t know what the hell happened.” All four friends that were interviewed clearly showed that they were surprised it was David.

The 2018 World Series: Overview and highlights

One of the most exciting events of the fall is the World Series. This year, the teams playing for the win were the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox ended up winning the title with a score of 5-1, in game 5. This directly reflected their successful 11-3 playoff season.

There were many highlights in the playoffs. One highlight was in Game 1 when Eduardo Nunez hit a 3-run homerun. This homerun was just the start of success for the Red Sox for the rest of the World Series. Another highlight was Mitch Moorhead’s pinch-hit in the 7th inning of the 4th game. This helped place the Red Sox to a 3-1 lead against the Dodgers.

Another important part of the World Series was the tug of war for the MVP award between David Price and Steve Pearce. Both men played incredible games, both were deserving of the award. Pearce ended up winning the award because of his game 5 play where he hit 2 homeruns.

Khabib vs. McGregor fight: aftermath tension and riot

On October 7th, 2018, Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov fought for UFC 229 in Las Vegas. Khabib was labeled as the winner of the fight during the 4th round. But winning this UFC title was not enough for Nurmagomedov. After the fight was over, he hurled himself over the the top of the cage and across the officials’ table to attack McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach, Dillion Danis.

The situation escalated from there. Three training partners of Nurmagomedov scaled the fence and attacked McGregor from different angles. After the brawl in the octagon, Khabib demanded that UFC president, Dana White, put the winning belt on him but he refused. Three of Nurmagomedov’s team members were detained, but McGregor declined to press charges and they were released, according to White.

Conor McGregor received his paycheck for that day but the state withheld Khabib’s. Questions were raised about Khabib possibly being stripped of the title were brought to the table. In the end, Khabib was labeled as the champion of the fight even though he started the riot.

“I know this is not by my best side,” said Khabib, who apologized to the commission for his actions at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas. Conor McGregor also released a statement, where he says that he is mad about the fight itself, not the aftermath.

Mass texts of the Presidential Alert system to everyone with smartphones

On Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018, everyone with a smartphone in the United States was expected to receive a text message that stated: “Presidential Alert: THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency System Alert System. No action is needed.” This is the first test that the federal government and cellular carriers put together to alert people of serious things like widespread disasters and terrorist attacks.

These are similar to AMBER ALERTS, for missing children, or serious weather warnings because they both come from the federal government. The only difference is with Presidential Alerts, you can not turn them off in your cell phone’s settings. The system is run by FEMA, which is the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They have stated that all major cell phone carriers have agreed to participate in this.

This test was originally scheduled for September, but it was delayed because of Hurricane Florence. The law behind the cell phone notification system, which was passed in 2016, requires FEMA to run a test at least every three years.

There has been a concern about privacy with these notification alerts. People are worried that the government has too much power over what they can see on our personal devices. Thankfully, President Trump isn’t the one who can just decide what message to send out to cell phones. It is controlled by specific people that work for FEMA. Also, the FCC will ask cell service providers to produce a reflection about how the test went.

FDA declares teen vaping an epidemic

Adolescent use of e-cigarettes and vapes has increased over 50 percent since 2014. A lot of these devices are dangerous to the developing brain of teenagers. One of the most popular brand with teens is JUUL. One of the JUUL “pods” that are used in the device contain the same amount of nicotine as a full pack of cigarettes. They also come in pleasing flavors such as: fruit medley, mango, mint, and crem brûlée.

In September, the Food and Drug Administration declared that companies will have to stop sales of flavored electronic cigarettes if they can’t prove they are doing enough to keep them out of the hands of children and teenagers. They are giving companies like JUUL, Blu, MarkTen XL, and Logic 60 days to come out with their own solution to prevent teen vaping.

More than 2 million middle school, high school, and college students use the vapes that heat liquid based nicotine into an inhalable vapor. According to the “Youth Tobacco Survey,” 12 percent of high school students and 3 percent of middle school students have used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days.

The FDA will put anti-vaping posters in over 10,000 school bathrooms and on websites. “The Real Cost” campaign will target 10.7 million young people ages 12-17 who have either used e-cigarettes or maybe are wanting to try them.

Highland Park band: Recent events

The Highland Park Senior High band has had many exciting, recent events. One was the trip over spring break to San Francisco. The band traveled to California to participate in an event called “Music in the Parks,” which is a competition hosted at a school right outside of Santa Cruz. This trip was not only a band trip, but an opportunity to visit many different tourist destinations including: the Twin Peaks, Fisherman’s Wharf (Pier 39), Chinatown, California’s “Great America” Amusement Park, and even the Cable Car museum. The trip was definitely worth the money, and the Highland Park band also won 2nd place in the competition.

Another recent event of Highland’s band, was the experience of marching from Rice Park, down to the Saints stadium. Many different schools went back to back marching down the streets of downtown St. Paul including: Central, Humboldt, Washington, Murray, Randolph Heights, and many more. After the event, the students got to enjoy the Saints game at CHS field.

The last event that the band will take part of, is  on May 25th, when the spring concert will take place. The Scot’s band, Honors Band, Symphonic band, and Jazz band will all play. All these bands, and their teacher, Mr. Matuzak, have been working hard all year to have the best performance!

Bill O’Reilly: Dropped from Fox News

Recently, Bill O’Reilly was dropped from Fox News, and lost his slot at 7 pm with his show The O’Reilly Factor. Mr. O’Reilly had reportedly sexuallly harrased many different female colleague at Fox News. After the story began to spread, more than 50 advertisers removed their ads from his show, including popular Fox advertiser, Jenny Craig.

Shortly after the show started losing many of its sponsors, Fox decided to let go of O’Reilly. He responded, “Over the past 20 years at Fox News, I have been extremely proud to launch and lead one of the most successful news programs in  history, which has consistently informed and entertained millions of Americans and significantly contributed to building Fox into the dominant news network in television.” He also was dissapointed in having to leave as he said: “It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims.”

After O’Reilly was let go from Fox News, he decided to start his own new podcast called “No Spin News.” The podcast is only available to premium members of his website.

According to Rupert Murdoch (the head of 21st Century Fox) he was the one who decided to let him go, but also had much praise for his show:  “By ratings standards, Bill O’Reilly is one of the most accomplished TV personalities in the history of cable news,” Murdoch wrote, “In fact, his success by any measure is indisputable.”

Many people have praise for Bill O’Reilly, and his conservative views on his popular talk show, but Fox was right to take action in this situation.

The issue of technology in the classroom

In the past few years, there has been a huge advancement in technology. This technology is being used for education (for example: school issued iPads). Even though the idea of technology is a good idea for helping children learn, it is also creating a distraction for their learning. In St. Paul Public Schools, there are many kids that are distracted by either their iPads or cell phones in the classroom (playing on them instead of doing their school work). This is causing them to not focus and learn, which can result in bad tests scores and low grades.

One of the issues with school iPads is the App Store which allows kids to download and play games on the device. In the last year, there have been fixes that have taken the App Store off of school iPads. This helped for awhile, until kids figured out how to either get the App Store back or they found other ways to play games. The App Store battle is a constant issue which is continuing to cause kids to be distracted in the classroom.

Another issue is the use of cell phones. Each teacher has different rules about phones but kids still use them to “listen to music while doing work.” There have been studies proving that listening to music is more of a distraction than a help for doing work (for an example see: http://www.spinedu.com/listen-music-studying/).

One more issue with cell phones is that if a student doesn’t have an iPad with them, they say they will just use their phones to do the work. The problem with this is A) the screens of cell phones are small so it is difficult to produce quality work and B) without the school iPad app restriction, the student is able to do anything on their phone even if they say they are doing work.

Since school issued iPads, and personal cell phones, are both an issue in a learning environment, there should be someone who looks into enforcing more efficient rules for the use of these devices in the classroom.
