The 2018 World Series: Overview and highlights
One of the most exciting events of the fall is the World Series. This year, the teams playing for the win were the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox ended up winning the title with a score of 5-1, in game 5. This directly reflected their successful 11-3 playoff season.
There were many highlights in the playoffs. One highlight was in Game 1 when Eduardo Nunez hit a 3-run homerun. This homerun was just the start of success for the Red Sox for the rest of the World Series. Another highlight was Mitch Moorhead’s pinch-hit in the 7th inning of the 4th game. This helped place the Red Sox to a 3-1 lead against the Dodgers.
Another important part of the World Series was the tug of war for the MVP award between David Price and Steve Pearce. Both men played incredible games, both were deserving of the award. Pearce ended up winning the award because of his game 5 play where he hit 2 homeruns.
Cross country to state
This year the Cross Country boys team made it to the State Championship, along with Molly Moening, Delia Johnson, and Caroline Hammer Harding from the girl’s team.
The boys team placed 2nd at the 4AA Section Championship, qualifying them for the State Championship. Oliver Paleen placed 3rd, with Calvin Boone coming in 4th, and Connor Gregg Escalante in 5th.
The last time the Highland boys team qualified for the State Championship as a whole team, was back in 1973.
Freshmen Molly Moening, on the girls team, won the Section Chapmionship, placing with a school record of 17 minutes, and 52 seconds. Along with Molly Moening, middle schooler, Delia Johnson placed in 4th, with a time of 18 minutes and 49 seconds, and junior, Caroline Hammer Harding, placed 12th, with a time of 19 minutes and 48 seconds.
The final results for the State Championship was: Molly Moening placing in 9th place, Oliver Paleen in 10th place, Delia Johnson in 35th place, and Connor Gregg Escalante missing the state honors by two places. Overall, the boys team finished 10th.
The teams did really well this year, qualifying for the State Championship. They trained really hard, running all around town, as practice right after school. Along with that, they also worked on some injury prevention exercises, and spent time in the weight room.
Hopefully, next year’s season will also be great.

Khabib vs. McGregor fight: aftermath tension and riot
On October 7th, 2018, Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov fought for UFC 229 in Las Vegas. Khabib was labeled as the winner of the fight during the 4th round. But winning this UFC title was not enough for Nurmagomedov. After the fight was over, he hurled himself over the the top of the cage and across the officials’ table to attack McGregor’s jiu-jitsu coach, Dillion Danis.
The situation escalated from there. Three training partners of Nurmagomedov scaled the fence and attacked McGregor from different angles. After the brawl in the octagon, Khabib demanded that UFC president, Dana White, put the winning belt on him but he refused. Three of Nurmagomedov’s team members were detained, but McGregor declined to press charges and they were released, according to White.
Conor McGregor received his paycheck for that day but the state withheld Khabib’s. Questions were raised about Khabib possibly being stripped of the title were brought to the table. In the end, Khabib was labeled as the champion of the fight even though he started the riot.
“I know this is not by my best side,” said Khabib, who apologized to the commission for his actions at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas. Conor McGregor also released a statement, where he says that he is mad about the fight itself, not the aftermath.

Homecoming Game 2018
Highland vs MSB

On Saturday, September 29th, after tailgating at 1pm, the Highland Park Scots football team walked out of the school building while the cheerleaders cheered for them. Then they headed to the stadium to play against MSB (Minnehaha, SPA, Benilde St. Margaret). After that, they started to warm up and get ready. The game began and Highland started off well, but later on, the other team made a comeback.
In the bleachers you could see the crowd cheering loud for Highland. Most students had their faces painted and wore red clothes. That day was very cold many people had blankets. Also, during the game concessions were selling hot chocolate to help people stay warm.
When you saw the cheerleaders, many of them were wearing sweatpants and sweaters underneath their uniforms since the day was pretty cold. The cheerleaders still brought out the school spirit. You couldn’t enjoy the game a lot because of the weather, and most people ended up leaving early.
A player from the Highland Park side name Dawit got a concussion after getting hit by another player from the other side. The players on the other side were big compare to the Highland Park players. They were harder to tackle and throw.
The game ended with Highland losing and MSB winning 35-6.
