The rise and fall of ‘Fortnite’

By Jafar Abdi

‘Fortnite’ is a battle royale made by Epic Games initially released as a survival game back in July of 2017. Seeing as how expensive the game was and how unoriginal it was, no one was really playing it until 2 months later, on September 26th, 2017, when it was rebranded as a free to play battle royale game. But it didn’t skyrocket immediately to become the game that we all know it as today; its peak came when  Epic Games released its 3rd season in February of 2018.

This was probably the most influence a game had on a generation, there were celebrities like Drake and Travis Scott streaming with the games biggest creators on Twitch like Ninja and Dr. Lupo. The game had reached the top of the mountain. The servers were crashing because there were too many people playing the game. People were wearing clothes with ‘Fortnite’ characters on it, and everyone at school was talking about ‘Fortnite’. It was all ‘Fortnite’ and would be all ‘Fortnite’ for the next year.

The game just kept getting better and there were more players each day, but its downfall would come on August 1st, of 2019, when Epic came out with its 10th season, “Season X”. With the new update it brought lots of new aspects and different items to the game and most of which were not received well by the players. This is when people started complaining about how unbalanced things were, the developers were not listening, and the numbers took a massive nose dive.

For the next couple of years, more and more people stopped playing the game and people thought that would be it. The numbers were still great for a video game but it was nowhere near what it once was.

But then on November 3rd, of 2023, the makers of the game finally listened after so long and they released “Fortnite: Season OG”. This was the highest the numbers of players had ever been, the game was exactly like it was 5 years prior, and the game was flourishing. Everything was back to how it was and people who had long ago stopped playing started up again. It was the biggest comeback a game had made and it was great again.

‘Leave the World Behind’

By: Stephanie Benitez Caballero

*Warning: This article contains spoilers

The movie ‘Leave the World Behind’ came out in 2023 on Netflix. It’s directed by Sam Esmail and produced by former first lady Michelle Obama and former president Barack Obama.

In the movie we are introduced to the Stanford family, a family of four, with Amanda and Clay as the parents and Rose and Archie as the children. Amanda books an Airbnb for her family to get away from the city and their work for a weekend. While on the way to the Airbnb the family starts to lose internet connection on all their devices. Rose, the youngest, complains about this as she is currently enamored with a show called ‘Friends’.

When at the Airbnb the family puts away their stuff and decides to head to the beach, and while at the beach Rose notices that a boat is slowly heading towards their direction. She points it out to her parents but they do not mind it. Not until later, when the boat is nearly at the beach, do the parents realize that the boat isn’t going to turn, making them panic and run away from the boat. The family decides to go back to their Airbnb. Once back at the Airbnb the family notices that the signal to the internet is completely gone, including on their TVs.

Later that night, George and Ruth show up at the Airbnb; we learn later that these are the owners of the house. They ask the Stanford family if they can stay there as they do not feel safe going anywhere else that isn’t their home. The Stanford family is skeptical about them being the owners so they ask them to prove it, which they do by opening the alcohol cabinets. They end up staying the night against Amanda’s wishes.

The next morning something goes up on the TV, a map of the US with a caption “Cyber Attack Across The Country” this sends the families into a bit of a chaos. During the day a lot of strange things happen to the families, loud ringing noises that hurt them occur, deers begin to show up more often and act weirdly, and Archie gets a bite from a deer tick which leads to him getting Lyme disease.

The families are now on the second day of being isolated together in the house, the Stanford family gets impatient and decides to try to go back to the city but while on the way to the city they encounter that the roads are blocked off by a bunch of cars. They quickly realize that the cars are self driving Tesla cars and that they are purposely rushing into one another. The family drives back to where they were staying as they find no other way back to the city.

The next day, Archie wakes up and starts to bleed from his mouth, and he starts to pull his teeth out. This was caused by the tick he got bitten from. In a panic, Clay, the father, tries to go out into town again to find some medicine for his child.

While out, the roads are empty and he believes to be alone, until he bumps into a Hispanic lady that only speaks Spanish. In a hurry, she tries to explain to him that she needs to get back home and that there’s planes in the sky dropping red papers. This makes Clay paranoid and leaves her behind.

Slowly approaching in the background we see the plane the lady was talking about, dropping thousands of red papers. Clay goes back and shows the paper to the others. It’s in Arabic, making them believe that the Arabs are the ones attacking them.

Rose disappears, so Ruth and Amanda go out to search for her while Clay and George try to go out with Archie to find medicine to treat the Lyme disease. They get to one of the closest houses and the owner tells them to back away because he couldn’t help them. He threatens them at gunpoint but they beg him to help them as they know he has the things need to save Archie. He gives in and supplies them with the medication.

The neighbor gives them so much information on everything going on, saying that he believes that it isn’t the Arabs attacking them, that the outside world is trying to confuse them and mess with them so that people will attack each other in confusion. He also lets them know one of the nearby houses has an underground base with many supplies and safety for all of them.

We cut to a scene of a house, a window broken. We see Rose inside eating what looks like a feast of junk food. Rose goes down to the basement where she finds an underground bunker, the one mentioned by the neighbor. Alone, Rose finds a DVD of the show Friends’, forgetting her family she sits down and smiles as she gets to watch the last episode of ‘Friends’.

I really liked this movie. I feel as if the trailer doesn’t spoil much but also gives a bit of context on what the movie will be about. I thought I knew what was going to happen but every moment new information and things came up. I think it’s a very realistic thing that would happen if the US were to get attacked. Some things weren’t explained further, such as who really created the attack, but I think that really adds to the movie.

I also really enjoyed the ending. I personally think that the last clip was to represent how in bad situations, that happen in the world, humans will always naturally turn to entertain themselves to distract them or make them forget about the world around them. I would rate this movie a 10/10.

Christmas cookie list

By: Chloe Rocha

During the Christmas season there is one tradition that many people like to take part in: that is making Christmas cookies. You don’t need to know a lot about baking to be able to make these cookies, you just have to be able to be able to look up “Christmas cookie recipes”.

Here is a list of 10 popular cookies to make during the Christmas season. Attached to the title will be a recipe to make the cookie, so if they sound good you can make them yourself at home. I’ve also included a little fact about the cookie.

1. The Classic Chocolate Chip Cookie

– The chocolate chip cookie was actually made by accident in the 1930s. A baker added broken chocolate bar pieces into a cookie recipe thinking that it would melt but instead the chocolate chip cookie was made.

Books that are being adapted

By: Abisola Dosunmu

2023 ends with an astonishing array of on screen adaptations. From ‘Red White Royal Blue’ to ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ (both of which I’ve done articles for) there were certainly a lot of fan favorites coming to the screen this year. In 2024 there are even more adaptions coming.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’:

Image created with Hotpot AI

The story starts off with the protagonist, Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy with ADHD and dyslexia and an incurable talent of being kicked out of every school he attends, discovering he’s a ‘demigod’ (half god and half human). This leads to his entering the world of Greek Gods and Goddesses, dangerous quests, and having to remember all the various myths surrounding them. Thrown into this world with only a pen, his best friend turned satyr, and a know-it-all girl he can’t stop fighting with, he’s tasked with finding and returning Zeus’s master lightning bolt to prove himself innocent because everyone thinks he stole it. That’s tough.

What we know about the series:

It’s coming out on the 20th of December, so as of right now, you can watch it. It’s released on Disney+ AND Hulu, according to information that was confirmed by Rick Riordan himself on December 14th (only the first episode will be released on Hulu whilst Disney+ will get the full first two episodes). Walker Scobell will be playing Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries plays Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri plays the dynamic Grover. The show is set to have an eight episode season. Season two hasn’t been green-lit yet.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

‘Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe’ is a coming of age LGBTQ+ story. Set in the year 1987, Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Dante Quintana are both Mexican American teenagers who quickly become  inseparable. They learn and grow from each other while sharing journeys of self-discovery as they explore their teenage-hood, growing up, their identities, sexualities, and relationships.

It’s available on Hulu and Amazon and the movie was released on September 8, 2023. Max Pelayo plays Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Reese Gonzales plays Dante Quintana.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

The live action was announced in September 2018, with a cast including Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Daniel Dae Kim. The series is set to release on February 22, 2024 on Netflix and just like ‘Percy Jackson’, will consist of a season with eight episodes.

‘Pink Tape’ album review

By: Judah Gregory

‘Pink Tape’ is Lil Uzi Verts most recent album released in 2023 and was Lil Uzis first album in three years. The album had mix reviews on release and his attempt at rock on this album is what gets the most critique, but with all the hype surrounding it, it would make it to 1# on Billboard’s Hot Two Hundred. The album has 10 tracks so I’ll be giving my short review on them and rank the album overall.

“Flooded the Face” is the opening track and has a cosmic sounding beat and sounds fine with vocals since this is him rapping and not attempting rock on this song. I think this is why it got good reviews, but overall the track was okay.

“Doors” this song is Uzis first attempt at rock on this album and it sucked overall in my opinion. His voice doesn’t really sound hard metal like anyways and this is his first try, so for it it’s not the worst attempt he could have made at this point in the album, but it gets worse.

“Aye” this song would feature the rapper Travis Scott and this would be a pretty good song on the album; I think because of the Travis feature. Uzi would actually play this song in concerts and Travis would want to make a verse on the song once he heard it. Overall, this track is pretty good for the album.

“Crush Em” previously known as “Own Age” through the series of snippets, is the 4th track on ‘Pink Tape’. The song had a really weird beat to follow it up like a futuristic retro beat, and sorta felt like a 90’s song, and with Uzis more high pitched voice it kinda fit with it. The song isn’t it for me but I could see how some people would like it

“Amped” is the fifth track from Lil Uzi Vert; the track was briefly previewed at the beginning of the album’s trailer. On this song, Uzi keeps it simple which I like since it’s not him trying to mix beats. This song I liked for its overall feel and can put you in a good mood.

“X2” is the 6th track on ‘Pink Tape’ by Lil Uzi Vert. It’s upbeat and bouncy and was produced by Ken Carson and Clif Shayne, two Opium signees under Uzi, This song had a lot of hype since he made it on an Instagram Live that I was on too, so it was cool to listen to this song. The feature of Ken Carson, I think, made this song better.

“Died and Came Back” this song is just weird and bad in my opinion. Here he was yelling about his money and things and with the rock music mixed with other beats, it just didn’t sound good. This song was bad, with just too much in it.

“Spin Again” this song would have a chaotic beat but would fit with Uzi, and the vocals in the song would also feature an Ice Spice lyric which would get him in trouble with his own girlfriend. Overall, the song is one of the best of the album in my opinion, and it is one of the most popular.

“I Gotta” this track was teased by Uzi in an Insta Live as usual. This song would be produced by Ken Carson again so this would have a good beat and would flow well with the song lyrics. This would speak on Uzi’s need to still make music after taking a long break.

“Shardai” the last track on this album would be produced by John Ross, and the vocals that Uzi used that weren’t rock were good for this song. In this song he would talk about another girl that he was in love with and his feelings for her at that time. For a closing song it was a strong way to end the album.

Overall, this album is a 6 out of 10 with it having some strong songs like “Shardai” and “X2” but its rock songs bring down the album to that 6.

Seasonal Recipes: Peanut butter blossoms

By; Austin Bailey-Zimmerman

In honor of Christmas time which just passed, I decided to bake these delicious peanut butter blossoms. They were so easy and fun to make, and I even decided to double the recipe because I enjoyed them so much!

I made these with my grandmother and my mom. It’s a family tradition for us to make these every Christmas. We have had this recipe in our family for a very long time, and I am glad because they make my mouth water every time.

I have these cookies as dessert, with some hot tea, or just as a snack. They are perfect bite-sized cookies, and the savory peanut butter cookie is paired perfectly with the sweet chocolate kiss on top. The outside of the cookie is crunchy, and surrounded by sugar, and the inside is soft and chewy. I have enjoyed these so much, so I shared them with the rest of my family and friends. You can do the same with this recipe! Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1⁄2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1⁄2 cup butter, softened
  • 1egg
  • 1 1⁄2 cups flour
  • 3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1⁄4 cup sugar
  • 1 Bag of Hershey’s kisses milk chocolate candies, unwrapped

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the sugars, peanut butter, butter and egg with an electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with a spoon, until well blended.
  3. Stir in flour, baking soda and baking powder until dough forms.
  4. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in additional granulated sugar.
  5. On ungreased cookie sheets, place the balls about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 8-10 mins or until edges are light golden brown.
  7. Immediately press 1 milk chocolate candy into the center of each cookie.
  8. Remove from cookie sheets to a cooling rack. (Put in freezer to cool faster)
  9. Enjoy!

‘Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’: Movie review

By: Abisola Dosunmu

Image created with Hotpot AI

‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, is a prequel to the four-part ‘Hunger Games’ movie franchise that’s set “64 years before Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen ever drew breath”, which means there are several serious changes. The known antagonist, Coriolanus Snow, who was played by Donald Sutherland in the previous movie, is now an 18-year-old kid played by actor Tom Blyth. Actress Rachel Zegler replaces Jennifer Lawrence as the female protagonist and plays one of the vital main characters, Lucy Gray Baird.

The movie was authored by Suzanne Collins and, like the ‘Hunger Games’, centers on a fight to the death/survival-of-the-fittest type reality show that only leaves one victor. For context, the games were invented as a punishment by the Capitol of Panem as payback to the 12 districts who dared to rebel against the Capitol. Every year on a specific day since that, a boy and a girl, relatively in their teens, are chosen from each district to fight to the death in a televised gladiator event.

Lucy as a character is already shown throughout the movie to be a different character to Katniss. She, like the title of the movie, is a songbird with a guitar and in a traveling band called the Covey. Strangely enough, the movie isn’t told from her point of view but from the younger Snow struggling to make it back to the top after losing everything. Lucy is his way back to that life, so he takes advantage of it and with that, the Hunger Games begin. Without giving away spoilers, I’m just going to say it gets pretty predictable from there.

So, what did I think of the movie? Well, it’s been a long time since I watched and read the ‘Hunger Games’, so basing it off of that it’s a refreshing and new take. It was interesting seeing young Snow and his motivations and aspirations and how the Capitol was the same but different a few decades ago. The actors had a lot of chemistry and the only bad thing I would say about the movie was that there wasn’t a lot of screen time for a lot of characters to develop the way there was in the book, so some characters felt rushed and not properly fleshed out. All in all, I’d give this movie an 8/10.

Album review – ‘AND THEN YOU PRAY FOR ME’

By: Ricky Perez Cardoza

‘And Then You Pray For Me’ is Westside Gunn’s 20th studio album released on October 13th, of 2023. Westside Gunn is enjoyed by mainly people who like boom bap or listen to mainly underground music. He isn’t well known but is praised for his continuation of releasing a lot of music and especially for having a distinct sound from every other mainstream artist. This album is no different from his others but is one of his most messy and less linear albums to date giving a lot of people mixed opinions on it.

“Mamas PrimeTime” starts the album with the unique and iconic boom bap instrumental Westside Gunn is known for. The song gets a lot of people who are into this sound hooked immediately, especially with Westside Gunn’s great verse on the song that adds to its dark and grimness. JID is an artist who just recently released one of the best rap albums in the 2020s and delivers an amazing verse on this type of instrumental which shows his great versatility. Conway the Machine also delivers a great verse and is someone who we see a lot of in the album.

“Kostas” is one of the many trap songs/instrumentals we see on the album. Its production is something Westside Gunn rarely has rapped on, and he still holds his own for most of his verse but goes in a weird route of not switching up his flow at all on a beat where he would’ve benefited from rapping faster and more smoothly. Conway the Machine has such a nice verse for this type of beat; he’s easily the one who carries the song even when Benny The Butcher also has a great part as well. This trio is something we see in a lot of Westside Gunn’s music and it works once again on this song.

“1989” (feat. Stove God Cooks) starts with a weird decision from Westside Gunn to have his whole verse in a lower tone which goes with the dark beat that they have, but Westside Gunn’s voice doesn’t really work with this and it just sounds way too dark and not good. Stove God Cooks also doesn’t have a great verse or chorus. His vocals aren’t good at all and are made worse by the grimy beat. It’s a song that most people skip because it doesn’t have much to offer but if Westside Gunn didn’t do the low pitch voice this song would be way better.

“S*ucide in Selfridges” goes back to the amazing boom bap and is even produced by the Conductor Williams who does such an amazing job at recreating the sound Westside has made for himself with his spin on it. Westside Gunn has a great verse that flows so nicely and is lyrical. He talks mainly about his life before rapping and even the current one. The one bad thing about his song is that it’s super short at only 2:51 of runtime but a minute of it is just a random person talking about himself.

“KITCHEN LIGHTS” is easily the best on the album mostly because of its classical, heavenly sound. Westside Gunn also has such an amazing verse with his flow, adlibs, and lyrics. He talks about his childhood and all the problems he faced as a kid living in the hood, and having an abusive father and the things he had to sell to get through most days and have food for him and his siblings. Stove God Cooks also has an amazing verse and this is where his vocals do help the song and are fitting.

“FLYGOD 2x” is a song people don’t talk about enough. It doesn’t necessarily stand out but has a nice boom bap sound where it’s only Westside Gunn on this song and it’s also one of the shortest songs on the album, but it doesn’t take away the fact it sounds like the normal Westside Gunn song. The verse from Westside should be talked about more and I wished it could’ve been longer. It also has a little clip of Tyler The Creator condemning Westside for making him want to rap again.

“DunnHill” (feat. Rick Ross) This would’ve been a great opportunity to have Rick Ross rap and deliver his verse on boom bap instrumental but instead Westside decides to have him rap on a trap beat that doesn’t go well together. Westside Gunn himself doesn’t do that well on these types of beats and Rick Ross doesn’t either. It’s one of the many songs that makes this album messy.

“House of GLORY” (feat. Stove God Cooks) is another song that is almost a left hook completely in its production and sound from both Westside Gunn and Stove God Cooks, and something that isn’t ruined by anything at all. Having these songs of just hitting you with a lot of different sounds is something that doesn’t help even when it has nothing wrong at all just a sound people only hear for this song, and it also doesn’t stand out either.

“JD Wrist” (feat. Stove God Cooks) is another great trap song that still goes with Westside Gunn’s sound and even has some of the founders of good trap music like the legendary Trap-A-Hoilics and verse from Estee Nack that has such a nice string of bars. He then takes a left turn and starts whispering his verse midway through. Westside Gunn does really well on this song and flows nicely on this instrumental.

“Disgusting” is another trap song that has Westside Gunn make a great decision production-wise and also how he delivers his verse with it getting broken up by adlibs. The Feature by Giggs who is a UK Drill Rapper doesn’t go well on this song. It’s a verse that would’ve been cut after a final draft from the album and would’ve had Conway or any other Griselda member on the track, but it ultimately leaves us with a mediocre verse from Giggs that doesn’t belong on that song.

“Chloe” is a great and honest attempt at a slow jam from Westside Gunn that definitely works with its sound and the great background vocals by Ty Dolla $ign, but when you really pay attention to the lyrics it becomes a slow but dark and dirty song with real explicit lyrics and Ty Dolla $ign has an alright verse but most importantly has amazing vocals.

“LL BOOL GUNN” is easily the worst song on the album. It has no redeeming qualities other than its title being funny to some Griselda fans. It’s lazy, embarrassing, and should’ve had a feature or even cut completely from the album.

“Babylon Bis” (feat. Stove God Cooks) is a longer song which for Westside Gunn is a good indication of a good song and that’s exactly what this song is. Westside Gunn goes back to the boom bap with a great verse, but also an amazing verse from Stove God Cooks that people would’ve been tired of hearing by now, but holds his own with amazing verses like the one he delivers on this song. We also get an unknown woman rapping/talking on the song who isn’t credited at all but does bring a good vibe to the song.

“Ultra GriZelda” (feat. Denzel Curry) is another amazing song attempt at a trap song and it works well on this song. Westside Gunn makes the best decision on this album to feature Denzel Curry on this song who destroys the song with an amazing verse and chorus. Westside himself also does well on the song which is expected because of how this instrumental was produced with both artists in mind.

“Jalen Rose” is the worst version of the previous song in every way. The song is produced similarly to “Ultra GriZelda” by incorporating piano into a trap beat but the Boldy James feature doesn’t help the messy and dirty-sounding instrumental that even Westside doesn’t perform well on where he talks again about his rough childhood.

“Steve and Jony” sounds way too similar to the song “Kostas” but this time instead of having the Griselda members on the whole we get a place feature from EST Gee who might have the worst feature on the album, tied with Giggs on the song “Disgusting”. The song is a worse and lazier version of the song “Kostas” and should’ve been cut out.

“MR EVERYTHING” (feat. Jeezy) Another attempt at a trap song. This one isn’t the worst of all the other trap songs on the album and might even be one of the best, but the random 2013 trap sound effects are really weird and outdated and were probably DJ Swamps Izoo’s idea. Jeezy who is also on a legendary status of being a founder of trap music is featured on this song and does well, but Westside Gunn still has the better verse even with it being explicit with its lyrics.

“Freddy Js” is the worst trap song on the album. The dirty and distorted mixing of the bass and other instruments is too unruly and undefined. The song would be way better if it didn’t do too much to be a rage/trap song in one that didn’t work out at all. Perez and Westside both have great verses that could’ve been amplified if the instrumental wasn’t so bad.

“The Revenge of Flips Leg” brings back the amazing producer Conductor Williams and he delivers a great instrumental. It’s also unruly like the previous song but also not as distorted or a trap instrumental. It has a great break/chorus from a slowed-down church choir that makes the transition from Rome Streetz to Westside Gunn amazing. They both perform well on this song but Rome Streetz goes all out on his verse mostly because of his rhyme and lyricism.

“AND THEN YOU PRAY FOR ME” is the final song of this long and messy album and giving the whole outro to KayCyy was not the best decision. His singing is not the best and also is slow. His verse on the other hand is good and having the beat simple and not messy like the rest of the album is such a genius move by Westside, but the song overall is forgettable.

‘And Then You Pray For Me’ is one of the very last full-length LPs that we’ll get by Westside Gunn who said himself that he wants to retire after this album. He’ll still be putting out music but won’t be releasing 2 to 3 projects in one year like he’s done for the past decade.

The album can’t be defined as a trap, boom bap, and is nothing like the ‘Pray For Paris’ which this album is a sequel to. It’s also one of his longer albums twice the length of ‘Pray For Paris’ which most people say is still the better album from those two and there’s a big reason why. ‘Pray For Paris’ is more centered on a sound; it doesn’t hit you with different sounds every song like this album does.

‘And Then You Pray For Me’ is an album that only gets better after every listen but is also bloated with some trash. You also might miss some of the best moments on the album because of how it’s organized. ‘And Then You Pray For Me’ is another example of Westside Gunn’s raw and artsy approach to rap and has some moments where it’s not well executed, but the good stuff on this album makes it an overall great addition to the massive discography Westside Gunn has.

‘Princess Peach: Showtime!’ is Princess Peach’s new game; the 1st in 18 years

By: M. Ahmadad

During the Mario segment of the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo had unexpectedly announced and teased a brand new Mario game, which wasn’t a follow-up or remake of an older one, for once. Another game where Princess Peach was the main character was unexpected, but pleasant enough to the point it was actually almost worth watching a Nintendo Direct in 2023.

‘Princess Peach Showtime!’ is the next upcoming spin-off title from the main Mario Brothers franchise, and it is not a sequel to ‘Super Princess Peach’ that was released in 2005. Showtime has settings, characters, and a new villain that were created for this game’s plot, instead of branching off from the cast and goal often reused for the majority of the Mario games…Bowser.

Though we don’t have much beyond a teaser and the 1st trailer, we see that the game is about theater. A basic description of the plot is that Princess Peach attends a show, only for the institute to be hijacked by some grape villain (who asked for someone called “The Wicked Grape” to be the next Nintendo villain?). The theater’s guardian, a magic ribbon named Stella, asks for Peach’s help to take back each performing arts set, in which Peach would need to become the main actress in each one.

From a martial artist, to a swords-woman, to a detective, or to a baker, Peach takes on a very versatile role as a main character, allowing players multiple game mechanics so they won’t easily be bored.

‘The Karate Kid’ 2010 film review

By: Cade Sullivan & Joey Briseno

★★★★☆

‘The Karate Kid’ film from 2010 is a modern-day remake of the classic 1984 film, seeking to introduce a new generation to the timeless story of mentorship, self-discovery, and martial arts. Directed by Harald Zwart, this iteration takes the narrative from the familiar streets of Los Angeles to the bustling metropolis of Beijing, China. While some may look down on remakes as a whole, this adaptation manages to recapture the essence of the original while adding all-new cultural aspects and contemporary twists.

Jaden Smith takes on the lead role of Dre Parker, a young teenager forced to relocate to China due to his mother’s job. Smith brings a fresh energy to the character, and he is very believable as a character who is trying to find his way in life. His chemistry with Mr. Han (played by Jackie Chan), the maintenance man with a mysterious past, is the emotional heartbeat of the film. Chan’s portrayal offers a very different experience compared to Mr. Miyagi, but he is still able to have a positive impact nevertheless.

One of the strengths of this version lies in its breathtaking cinematography, which manages to capture the beauty and vibrancy of China. The scenic landscapes are a great backdrop to the martial arts sequences, which are well-choreographed and intense. The film embraces its setting, incorporating Chinese culture into the narrative. This pays homage to the roots of martial arts and enhances the visual appeal of the film.

The narrative progresses at a measured pace, allowing for the development of characters and relationships. Dre’s journey from an outsider facing bullying to a determined martial artist is a great show of resilience and makes it a journey worth cheering for. The film doesn’t shy away from addressing issues of cultural adaptation and the challenges of fitting in, giving it a more mature feel that it’s predecessor.

The mentor-student dynamic between Dre and Mr. Han is the emotional core of the movie. Chan’s stoic performance adds depth to the character, revealing layers of grief and wisdom beneath his tough exterior. The training sequences, which are reminiscent of the iconic scenes from the original, manage to have a balance between rigid instruction and softer moments. The emotional weight of the story is heightened by the addition of Mr. Han’s own struggles, helping the audience further emphasize with the character.

‘The Karate Kid’ incorporates modern elements, such as the use of technology and social media, without forgetting about the traditional values at its core. This fusion of the old and the new extends the movie’s reach to all generations. Dre’s journey becomes not just a personal quest for self improvement but a reflection of the theme of adapting to a modern world.

Despite its many strengths, ‘The Karate Kid’ is not without its flaws. The film occasionally leans too far into clichés, and some moments may feel overly familiar to the original that it takes its name from. The runtime, surprisingly over two hours, could have been lessened for a more fluid and better-paced experience.

The 2010 adaptation of ‘The Karate Kid’ successfully pays homage to its predecessor while carving out its own identity. With engaging performances, stunning visuals, and a timeless story of mentorship, this film proves that even in a different cultural setting, in a different time, the values of discipline, perseverance, and self-discovery remain. Dre is a great lead, and his underdog story is one that we were involved in throughout the runtime. We would recommend checking this film out.
