Film review: Phantom Tread

Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson’s most recent film, starring Daniel Day-Lewis in his supposedly final role. Set in the London couture world of the 1950’s, it follows the turbulent romance of Reynolds Woodcock (Lewis), an obsessive fashion designer, and his muse and lover Alma (Vicky Krieps). Like the dresses Woodcock’s sewers meticulously craft, Phantom Thread is a work of fine beauty.

The first thing to notice is the atmosphere. The cinematography is, as one would expect of an Anderson feature, elegant and gorgeous. The camera seems to float through the various living rooms, sewing rooms, and spiral staircases in the Woodcock mansion. Or, in one incredible scene, it is fixed to the back of Woodcock’s car as he drives through the English countryside. Jonny Greenwood’s lyrical soundtrack plays in the background for nearly the entirety of the first 30 minutes, and for much of the rest of the film. Phantom Thread feels like a dream. As Mark Kermode has pointed out, Phantom Thread plays like a modern fairy tale, with its dresses and magic charms.

Rarely in film, and especially in dramas, are the aesthetic elements, image and sound, so masterfully composed as to be totally enjoyable on their own, despite plot. But, Phantom Thread’s aesthetic value is comparable to that of any art film. The simplicity of the film’s first act led me to believe that this would be the biggest compliment that I could pay it, but as the film progressed I realized that I was sorely mistaken. Phantom Thread is not only a beautiful movie, but a captivating drama.

Characters in Paul Thomas Anderson’s films never have simple (or healthy) relationships, a fact which becomes invariably more important as each film progresses. Consider Eddie and Maggie’s Oedipal romance in Boogie Nights and Daniel and H.W.’s abusive father-son relationship in There Will Be Blood. From a dramatic point-of-view, this is Anderson’s greatest skill as a filmmaker. His stories begin archetypal, but progress by subverting those very archetypes.

Phantom Thread follows this pattern. It is ostensibly a love story, but its perverse developments and sickly romantic ending lead us to reconsider love itself. In a Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Anderson is asked if he “sanctions” the actions Alma takes in order to get closer to Woodcock, and if he considers Alma and Woodcock’s relationship to be in any way “healthy.” Anderson responds that he is, “Groovy with love of all kinds.”

Anderson is not a psychologist, but a poet. If we are to appreciate Phantom Thread as a work of cinematic poetry, we must focus on the impression that it makes, and not on its underlying morality, which may very well be sick. We must not worry about justifying the beauty of Phantom Thread. Instead we should focus on appreciating it.

The film ends with a montage of Alma and Woodcock’s life together beyond the movie, and the multiple false endings within it create a sense of unending love and beauty. If this ove is unrealistic or even sick, it is at least beautiful. With Greenwood’s soundtrack in the background, it is reminiscent of the film’s beginning, creating a satisfying circular structure, at least aesthetically.

Lastly, it should be mentioned just how “funny” Phantom Thread is. Woodcock’s fussiness, and Alma’s waywardness, create a dynamic that is hilarious and adorable in its immaturity. Cyril, Woodcock’s deathly serious sister and business partner, also provides comic relief, as well as deep insight into either star. The stars act like two children, which may be why they are so likeable even when they do the most evil things.

So, Phantom Thread succeeds on all fronts. It is a feast for the senses and for the heart. I agree with Mark Kermode that it is, in fact, Paul Thomas Anderson’s greatest film yet.

★★★★ out of four

On Sunday night, Phantom Thread received one (for Best Costume Design) out of the six Academy Awards it was nominated for. It lost in the Best Picture and Best Director categories to The Shape of Water and its director Guillermo Del Toro, respectively. Though Phantom Thread deserved to win both, I am not totally unsatisfied with those results. The Shape of Water is a very good film, and Del Toro a talented director. Daniel Day-Lewis losing to Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) in the Best Actor category, however, was incredibly disappointing.

Whats the deal with these iPads?

IPads were introduced to Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) in 2015. It was a new way for students to be interactive with their work. The iPads bring education to life with hands-on work. Students have specific access to apps such as Dictionary, Calculator, Schoology, and Campus Portal. While some apps are allowed in SPPS, others aren’t. Although we were given an iPad, some restrictions applied. The App Store, Messages, FaceTime, and more, are not allowed. With this information, it had us thinking: Why aren’t students rewarded with the App Store if they are maintaining their grades?

With this question, we took the time to talk to Mr. Peterson. He is the iPad coordinator here at Highland. He takes care of all the Troubleshooting problems and has helpful hints with not only iPads but anything technology. We talked to Mr. Peterson to get as much information as we could on the iPad. Here are a few of the highlights:

Why don’t we have the App Store?

  • It is because not all apps are school appropriate. The district has a filter where they manage which apps we have access to.

Why do other schools have their App Store?

  • Private schools might be breaking the law about the iPads. They have different rules. It could also be they are managed differently. The way that we manage the apps means that we have to consider all ages in our choices about which apps in are in our self-service.
  • There are some apps they could have for specific ages, but also have to be aware of middle schoolers.
  • Self-service is the only service that does the job of maintaining, but it doesn’t do everything, it’s not able to give “age appropriate apps” (feature request).
  • Some apps are connected to some federal laws, and we get a federally mandated price for our Internet, so part of the fear is that we could lose our education radar for our Internet if we got caught giving apps that kids aren’t supposed to have. Strict guidelines.

With group projects, and people living far, why don’t you think they should have Skype and FaceTime, in your opinion?

  • I think the district should do whatever it can to get video conferencing enabled for students to use or Skype.
  • They have been reviewing Skype to make sure that it wouldn’t be too much on the system, so they have been running tests on them, and they haven’t been going well on there. They keep saying that they will (Enable Skype) but end up failing. It’s an ongoing project that they need to rush and enable the app.

While talking to Mr. Peterson, he mentioned CIPA, COPPA, and FERPA. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) governs the filtering of Internet access, acceptable use, and digital citizenship education. The Children’s Online Privacy & Protection Act (COPPA) governs the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information collected from children under age 13. While the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student education records.

These three laws work hand and hand to ensure Internet safety across our district. The App Store was removed when the district learned they were violating CIPA, COPPA and FERPA laws. The solution is to shut down the App Store.

For more information about these laws, please visit: https://www.spps.org/cms/lib/MN01910242/Centricity/Domain/11270/OverviewofCIPACOPPAandFERPA12.2015.pdf

Overall, while many students don’t enjoy their iPads, it’s a helpful resource. These iPads, as Mr. Peterson puts it, are to help personalize learning and transform learning for each student.

There are complications when it comes to having a reward.

There are district laws that prevent us from having our the App Store on our iPads. While our App Store dreams are crushed, there is still the possibility of having Messages, FaceTime or Skype, all helpful tools for group projects.

As we continue to use the iPads, the District will continue to find the best way to operate and execute it properly.

Black Panther review

By: Sagal & Aniso

Black Panther is a really good movie. It is a Marvel movie, based off of the Captain America: Civil War movie. Most of the characters were introduced previously on the Captain America movie.

The majority of the characters were African American. The movie stood out because most of the cast was black, which made many people excited for its release.

The visuals of the movie were another reason why it was a major movie. The country Wakanda, where the movie takes place, is a beautiful country, and it’s special because Wakanda was never colonized. Wakanda has great natural resources like the healing plant they have. The people in the community have respect for each other and will fight for their country if necessary.

Our favorite character is Shuri, the sister of T’Challa/Black Panther. In the movie, she is really funny and outgoing. She worked a lot in the laboratory creating really cool things like: suits, imaginary cars, and planes. She’s very intelligent and she really loves her brother. She loves working with the stuff she created, and also loves messing with her brother.

Shuri and her brother have a really strong bond. There was a scene where Shuri was fighting Eric, and she was losing, and Eric tried to kill her. T’Challa saw what was going on, and ran over and started to fight Eric. He does not like people messing with his sister, and he proved it in that scene.

Eric is the “enemy” in this movie. Eric challenges T’Challa (the current king) for the crown to be king. When Eric was little, T’Challa’s dad killed Eric’s dad and left Eric behind, fatherless. That’s where all the hatred and revenge comes from.

To find out who gets hurt, and who gets to be king, you should go watch the movie. We personally think this movie is great, and should have a sequel.

Fornite’s popularity

Released in the middle of September, 2017, Fortnite, a battle royal video that was created by, Epic Games, was a major hit in the gaming community. In just 3 months, Fortnite was one of the most downloaded games of the year, and as of February, 2018, has reached over 40 million players world wide.

Not only is Fortnite free-to-play, it is also a battle royal, and at the time of Fortnite’s early access, the most played battle royal game was, Player’s Unknown Battlegrounds. Fortnite has gained popularity because of its free access to players, and how the gameplay of the game works.

Many times, Epic Games had to expand their technology towards Fortnite with the number of players worldwide. Epic Games would have game servers shut down from time to time because of the excessive number of players.

Fortnite is a genre of battle royal, where the player drops onto a generated map with nothing but a pickaxe. Once landed, the player’s objective is to find loot, such as weapons, health kits, shields, etc. and survive against 99 other players who also have the same objective; to be the last standing surviver.

Fortnite’s graphics are created to give the game a carton type vibe, and allow players to build using 3 resources: Wood, Stone and Metal. Players are allowed to build floors, stairs, ramps, walls, doorways, etc., using this mechanic. This allows players to better survive against others in combat, and gives the game a new mechanic that players can use.

Battle royal has become one of the more favored genres in gaming ever since the release of H1Z1 and Player’s Unknown Battle Grounds.

Reviews for Fortnite have been mainly positive; for it’s free-to-play access and the mechanics of the game. Many gaming companies have taken a liking to Fortnite and many famous YouTubers have profited from Fortnite. Many companies have prospered because of Fortnite like: Twitch, PlayStation, Microsoft and Epic Games.

Epic Games was also affected, because of how many players downloaded Fortnite and played. Epic Games had to increase the amount of servers they had because of the increase of Fortnite players. This also affected another game that Epic Games had been developing over the past 2 years, which was Paragon.

Fortnite has been used by YouTubers, and streamers, to boost their incomes; mainly, YouTubers because of the new Terms of Service, of how certain graphical videos would earn no ads for that particular video. This meant that YouTubers couldn’t earn money from uploading videos of certain games, so many YouTubers became streamers; also known as monetization.

Twitch gained a positive value from Fortnite because of the amount of streamers who had come to stream Fortnite using Twitch. This allowed Twitch and the streamer to earn donations by the viewers who watched. Twitch gained an increase in streamers, once Fortnite gained popularity, before the end of 2017. This affected Twitch’s views, economy, software updates, and the streamers who used Twitch.

2018 Winter One Acts

Romance, danger and…Dungeons and Dragons? These were some of the topics covered in Highland Park Thespian Society’s 2018 Winter One Acts.

One Acts are typically written and directed by students, and last 20 to 30 minutes. They only have one act; hence the name One Acts. This year 5 shows were put on. They were as follows;
Check Please! – written and directed by Clare Brownlee (11)
The Understudy– written and directed by Soren Eversoll (11)
Roll for Initiative – written and directed by Helen Feng (12)
Tracks – written by Peter Tarsi and directed by Eddie Lopez (10) and Leah Callanan (11)
This is a Test – written by Stephen Gregg directed by Ben Smith (11)

Tickets were six dollars for students and eight dollars for adults. Refreshments and concessions were sold directly outside of the auditorium doors.

The show opened with The Understudy, which was Eversol’s debut with acting and writing. It centers around a cast and play, which seems almost like an Inception type of thing. The one act was a comedy with a dramatic setting. The play involves jealousy, guns, and a dead guy lying on the floor. I enjoyed it thoroughly and would’ve liked to see it again.

Second to show was Tracks. The dynamic duo that is Lopez and Callanan took this comedy and played it as a drama. This worked out surprisingly well. The main storyline is about how people wind up on the same train platform, coming to the conclusion that they’re all dead. Now they have to figure out if the train they are to get on is going up or down.

Third in show was This is a Test, a true testament to a high schooler’s nightmare. In this play, a group of students are taking a test, with one student in particular stressing majorly. Once they sit down to do the task, they find it to be the most difficult exam of their life. One section is in Chinese! It was comical and relatable all the way through. Smith definitely directed well.

Roll for Initiative came fourth. It had a mix of geekiness and romance that was charming. While those who live for D and D will love the set up and chit chat among characters, others can enjoy the relationships between the characters. Feng did a wonderful job at meshing the two worlds together and almost made me want to find a D and D group to join!

Check Please! is a comical story about a girl (Zoe Challanger, grade 12) trying to find love through bad Tinder dates. It is set in a local coffee shop, and the dates seem to keep getting worse as the weeks go on. Her waitress (Amelia Stensrud, grade 10), becomes a close ally, and it ends with a surprising and heartwarming twist. Director Clare Brownlee (grade 11) does a fantastic job in her debut as a director and playwright.

What was to come last was a show by Mason Blumer-Lamotte about a suicide prevention hotline and its callers. Unfortunately, due to conflicting opinions, it had to be cut.

All in all, the 2018 One Acts were a success! Highland Park Senior High thanks all those wonderful thespians who brought these fantastic one acts to life!

Hawaii 5-0 review

Hawaii 5-0 is a criminal show with a lot of action. The characters in the show are very hilarious but our favorite characters are Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams, aka Danno, because whenever they are driving to a crime scene they bicker every single time. They also take partner counseling classes to express how they feel, and to learn to compromise with each other. Danno gets irritated by McGarrett’s crazy driving; he believes that he has some serious issues. Whenever they go on ride along, Danno is always the passenger rider in his own car, which also irritates him.

We don’t have a favorite episode because we enjoy all the episodes, but one of the funniest episodes is in season 2, when McGarrett finds out that the governor is working with his enemy, Wo Fat, and also who Shelburn is. McGarrett’s mom is an an undercover CIA agent who raised Wo Fat when he was younger. Wo Fat and Steve both went all around the world to look for a mysterious thing/person called Shelburn. They eventually find out that Shelburn was Steve’s mom’s undercover name. They both thought that she had died a long time ago.

Danny is a character we all love, he’s funny, calm, and emotional. Danny likes the easy way out of messy situations. One of the people Danny loves is his daughter, Grace. He cares for her and is a wonderful dad. He puts his daughter first and will do anything for her, or anything to save her if she’s in trouble. Danny moved all the way to Hawaii to be closer to his daughter.

Overall, we suggest this show to everyone. It’s a show that will have you wondering what happens next and it isn’t predictable. Every episode is new and interesting. We give this show 5 stars out of 5, so go binge watch it NOW and let us know how you enjoy it.

Target

By Piper Gallivan, Alivia Arredondo, and Alani Bayon

Let’s face it, almost everyone has been to Target at least once in their lifetime, and most people say it’s pretty great. We hope you love Target as much as we do, and if you don’t here are six reasons to love Target!

Whether you came specifically looking for it, or just found it along the way, Target has everything you will ever need. They have you covered for clothes, food, home decor, furniture, toys, a health clinic, an optical clinic, a separate section for alcohol, and of course, Starbucks. It’s so hard to leave with just what you came to get because you will see a million other things you want. If you had to go to only one store for the rest of your life, Target would be the most logical option.

Who doesn’t love Target clothes? Target has a variety of clothes and clothing styles. They carry: sports/workout, maternity, work, pajamas, undergarments, baby, teen, kid’s, men’s, women’s, swimsuits and accessories. Basically, any type of clothing you need you can find at Target! Not only that, but the clothes at Target are very stylish, and they are also half the price of clothes you would find somewhere else like, American Eagle. Target also fits all sizes! So no matter your size, Target will have something for you. Their clothes also include a variety of brands to choose from, so it’s guaranteed you’ll find something you’re interested in. Finally, in most Targets, the clothes sections are located in the front of the store so it is easy to find, and easy to locate your desired style.

Another great thing about Target, is that for most people, it is convenient and not a far drive! Targets are stationed nationwide, and there is generally one in each city. There are a variety of Targets that range in size, location, and products. Some Targets are smaller like the Target Expresses, which usually are in busier places, and smaller buildings, like the one in the Village, in St. Paul. Then there are the much larger Targets, like Super Target, which is larger and has more products inside. Finally, you have the regular sized Targets.

Another great thing about Target is that you can shop online, so if you live too far away, you can easily purchase it online and they will drop it off at your house. Target also has a drive-in, and a pick-up, section, which basically allows you to shop online and Target will have it ready for you to pick up at the store when you arrive.

Depending on the Target you live by, you may have a food section. You can find fruits, vegetables, grains, and much more. Target also can meet your dietary need,s which is something amazing. If you have a gluten free diet, Target has gluten free bread, gluten free cereal, and anything you could think of. Perhaps you are vegan. Target can supply you with vegan meat, chips, dips, yogurt, and much more. Even if you don’t have a specific diet, Target has such a large variety of food to choose from, you should be able to find something you can eat.

Not only is Target convenient for buying groceries, it also has a pharmacy. The pharmacy is an easy and quick way to get in with a doctor instead of having to go to an urgent care or to your personal doctor. So, if you have strep throat, or an ear infection, or the flu, you can easily go to Target and they will take care of you.

Bullseye’s playground is my personal favorite part of Target. If you don’t know, it is Target’s dollar section. It is usually located at the front of the store, so it’s the first thing you see; that is part of what makes it so irresistible to stop and check it out. The things they carry vary by season, so just looking at it can make you so excited for the upcoming holiday or season. You can always count on a few staple items to be there such as: stationary, candles, socks, toys, and homeware. The prices are always $1 or $3, with the occasional splurge item of $5. The quality of their merchandise is actually really good, so you can find valuable items for some good deals. Overall, this area of Target is always there to bring you some joy at low costs!

Overall, Target is a great store where you can find all of your needs at an affordable price, and we hope this article has convinced you to love Target as much as we do.

Chess for starters

Have you ever played chess? Chess is a game that has more ways to play than possibly the stars in the known Universe. It’s a strategy game where the opposing enemy has to capture the king to win. In a game of chess, you could win, stalemate (also known as a draw), or lose. There are people who play chess and yet, they don’t know the three stalemates. This article will show the two special moves, and stalemates, that regular players could possibly not know of or should know about.

To win, you need to capture the king by putting the opposing enemy’s king in checkmate. To do this, you need to put the enemy’s king in a position where no matter where the king goes the king would be captured.

There are three ways to stalemate in the game of chess. Threefold repetition,           50-move rule, and a stalemate where the king can’t move but isn’t in check. Threefold repetition is when the same position has occurred for 3 times by the same players. The 50-move rule is when the last 50 moves are made without the capture of any pieces or the movement of a pawn. Lastly, the regular stalemate, that many players know of, is when you or the opposing enemy can’t make a move without their king being captured. This means that you or the opposing player can’t make a move and the game ends in a stalemate.

Two special cases for the game of chess, that some players still don’t know of, is the castle and the En passant. The castle is a special move, and the only move that allows the movement of two pieces on the board at once. They are the king and the rook. The castle could occur on the left or right side of the board and could be played if there are no remaining pieces between the king and the rook. The castle could also only be played if the king plus the rook haven’t moved, and can only be played if the king isn’t in check, the rook isn’t being targeted by a piece, and if all the spaces between the king and rook is not being targeted with any enemy moves. To do the castle, the king would move two spaces to the right or left. The rook the king moved forward to, would jump over the king and go directly to the other unoccupied space next to the king.

The other special case is the En passant, and it is a special capture done with by the pawns. The En passant is allowed when your pawn is either on the 5th rank or the 4th rank. If you are white, your pawn would be on the 5th rank and if you are black, your pawn would be on the 4th rank. This is because to do the En passant your opposing enemy’s pawn needs to do a double jump. As many starters know, the pawn is allowed to jump two spaces forward on their very first move. Any other move is just one space forward. To do the En passant, the enemy’s pawn would need to jump two spaces, and is right next to your pawn. Once the enemy’s pawn is next to your pawn, you would capture the pawn diagonally towards them. Your pawn doesn’t capture the pawn next to them like moving the rook, king, or the queen, but moves forward as if the enemy’s pawn has only moved one space instead of two. However, the En passant could only be done immediately after the moment the enemy’s pawn moves. If you or your opponent waits a turn before doing the En passant then it will become an illegal move.

Anticipated movies coming out in 2018

By Aicha Minoui and Jamie Zarn

So far, 2018 has had its ups and downs but, in the section of movies, now that is a different story. 2018 is bringing forth new sequels, or ending movies to a franchise, such as: The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, The Incredibles 2, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Wreck It Ralph: Ralph Breaks The Internet. Even new single movies like Winchester, a horror movie, and Ready Player One, an action movie.

One of the listed franchise movies such as, The Maze Runner: The Death Cure finishes off the Maze Runner series in a way which leaves the audience wanting more, and missing forgotten characters, as well as answering some unanswered questions from the last two movies. The movie also sets the series to rest in a way where you can leave the theatre astonished, and be assured that the series has ended, which is usually never the case but, this time, it does seem like that is the case.

Wreck It Ralph: Ralph Breaks The Internet, is a new and upcoming sequel from a favorite movie released in 2012. In this film, not much has been said about the plot except that it’s set six years after the previous movie, and that Princess Vanellope Von Schweetz (or just Vanellope) and Ralph go to find a replacement part for the game Sugar Rush after a Wi-Fi router is connected to the arcade. What that replacement is, is still not known but, it’s said that an algorithm Yesss, which is another version of Youtube called Buzztube, will be included, as well as an appearance of the Disney Princess line-up (voiced by the original voices), Stars Wars characters, and Marvel characters. This is something to look forward to.

I think everyone can agree that Incredibles 2 is the movie everyone is looking forward to. The sequel to the favorite animated superhero movie, released in 2004, is finally being released. Not only are children excited, but people who grew up watching the Incredibles over and over again are super excited for the sequel as well. Regarding the plot, the movie is about Mr. Incredible taking care of Elastigirl and his kid, Jack-Jack, while she is out saving the world.

Two movies I’m personally excited for, are Pacific Rim: Uprising and Ready Player One. Pacific Rim: Uprising is the sequel to Pacific Rim, which was released in 2013. Pacific Rim was about mecha robots, called Jaegers, fighting Kaiju that are trying to destroy the world. Uprising is about Jake Pentecost, whose father was Stacker Pentecost, abandoning Jaeger training and getting caught up in the criminal underworld. Suddenly an even greater threat than the Kaiju come and Jake Pentecost gets one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy, given to him by his estranged sister, Mako Mori. This movie stars John Boyega, well known for his role as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Ready Player One is an action movie about the creator of a virtual reality game called OASIS who dies and challenges every OASIS player to find his Easter Egg. Whoever finds it will win his fortune. Wade Watts finds the first clue and starts a race for the egg. To me, this movie just seems like a fun action movie, and I’m pretty excited for it.

Winchester is a new horror movie about one of the most haunted houses in the world, on an isolated stretch of land outside San Francisco. It follows Sarah Winchester, as a prison for the vengeful ghosts that have a score to settle with the Winchester family. It is currently pulling 10% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Treats and gifts for Valentine’s Day.

It’s that time of the year again, when the stores start putting out heart shaped everything and love is in the air. Another Valentine’s Day is coming up quickly; a time of year to show your loved ones just how much you appreciate and love them. So, here are some treats and gifts that’ll show just that!

Treats:

Sweetheart Cherry Pies:

If you’re looking for an easy but very delicious treat, this is the thing for you! It only takes about 25 minutes to prepare and bake. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pie dough (you can usually find this in any grocery store)
  • Fresh Cherries
  • Ricotta cheese
  • Sugar
  • 1 tbsp of butter, melted
  • Heart cookie cutter

Step 1: Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees and make sure to line a baking sheet with some parchment paper.

Step 2: Take your pie dough and roll it out to about an inch thick and then take your heart shaped cookie cutter and press them into the dough. Make sure to use all of the leftover scraps to make more!

Step 3: Take all of your cherries and make sure to remove the pit, an easy way of doing that is by using a straw to help push it out. After you’ve removed the pit, chop up the cherries into small little pieces.

Step 4: In the bowl of cherries add a small pinch of sugar, or more if you have a sweet tooth.

Step 5: On the lines baking sheet, take the heart shaped pie dough and lay them on gently. After you’ve placed all of the pie dough out, take a spoonful of the ricotta cheese and place it into the middle of each heart, doing the same with your chopped up cherries.

Step 6: Lay down the top dough and seal the edges with a fork. After you’ve sealed the dough together, take your melted butter and brush it over top.

Step 6: Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown. Make sure to let the little pies cool down before serving!

Step 7: Enjoy the sweet treat with your friends and family or with your significant other!

Candy Heart Bark:
This chocolate dessert is one of the easiest treats to make! All it takes is about five ingredients; here’s what they are!

  • White chocolate
  • Canola or vegetable oil
  • Semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • Conversation heart candies
  • Food coloring of your choice

Step 1: Take a baking sheet and like it with parchment paper or a silicone mat if you have one.

Step 2: Using a double boiler or a microwave melt down your white chocolate, taking it out every 20 seconds to stir it thoroughly, adding about a tbsp of your oil into the chocolate. After melting the chocolate you can add any color that you want.

Step 2: Melt your semisweet in the same exact way that you did with the white chocolate. After the semisweet chocolate is melted, pour it onto the lined baking sheet, spreading it out evenly.

After you finish spreading the chocolate, use a spoon to scoop up your white chocolate/colored chocolate and randomly pour it into different spaces on top of the semisweet chocolate.

Step 3: Using a tip of a toothpick or even a fork, to drag the white chocolate into different shapes, creating a water marble effect. Before the chocolate hardens up, take your heart candies and place them all around your chocolate.

Step 4: Put the tray into the refrigerator and let it harden for about 2 hours. After its hardened, take the chocolate and break it into pieces as large or as small as you’d like!

DIY gifts:

Heart Bath bombs:

  • Baking Soda
  • Citric Acid
  • Fine Epsom Salts
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Love Potion Essential Oil
  • Red food coloring
  • Witch hazel
  • Mesh strainer
  • Spray bottle
  • Silicone heart mold
  • Plastic gloves

Directions:

Take your mesh strainer and place it over a large bowl, pour in 1 cup of your baking soda, 1/2 cup citric acid and 1/4 cup of fine epsom salts.

Stir baking soda, citric acid and epsom salts until well blended, making sure there are no lumps.

Next, slowly add 1/2 Tablespoon of jojoba oil to the dry mixture. Add 10 drops of Love Potion essential oil and 1-2 drops of food coloring.

Wearing plastic gloves, mix the oils and food coloring through the dry mixture, until it is well incorporated and pink.

Once mixture is blended, slowly add witch hazel, one spritz at a time, until the bath bomb mixture sticks together when squeezed.

You’ll need about 8 to 10 spritzes of witch hazel to get the right consistency. The mixture should not be crumbly. It should stick together when squeezed, but you don’t want it too wet or it may begin to fizz.

Pack the slightly damp mixture tightly into the heart shape molds. Be sure to pack the mixture well, fitting in as much as possible into each mold. (This recipe should make 5 to 6 heart-shaped bath bombs.)

Allow to dry for several hours, or ideally overnight, then remove the homemade bath bombs from the molds.

They should be very hard when you remove them from the molds. Wrap bath bombs tightly in plastic wrap and store in a cool, dry place, away from any moisture.

Strawberry Sugar Scrub:

This perfect, and easy little gift is perfect for anyone who loves smooth skin! This strawberry sugar scrub is made in a few minutes, and smells absolutely amazing; here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup cane sugar
  • 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries
  • 3/4 cup organic virgin coconut oil, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Step 1: Take a big ziploc bag and place your freeze-dried strawberries in them. Make sure to seal it real tight, taking all of the air out to make it easier to smash it. You can use a rolling pin to smash the strawberries into almost a dust like consistency.

Step 2: place your strawberry dust into a bowl and add your cane sugar. After you’ve added your sugar, take your coconut oil and place it into the bowl as well, along with your vanilla.

Step 3: Combine everything together!

You can put this scrub into any container that you’d like, big or small! Enjoy using this while showering or while taking a nice hot bath! This will do wonders for you skin.

I hope you take your time to make these wonderful little treats and gifts, whether that be for your loved ones or even just for yourself! Have an amazing Valentine’s Day this year, spend it doing something fun!
