Here’s what happened at the 2019 Oscars

By: Daniela Fernandez and Maddie Baggenstoss

This year’s Oscars was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. The Oscars have been going on since 1929. What happened this year? Keep reading to get all the tea!

This year’s Oscars had no host. They originally were going to have Kevin Hart host this year’s Oscars, but after old homophobic jokes he made resurfaced, he stepped down claiming that he didn’t want any drama during the Oscars, according to Vox. This was the first time since 1989 that the Oscars haven’t had a host.

The awards ceremony opened with Adam Lambert and Queen playing some of their hits.

Here are the winners of big awards from the Oscars.

This year’s winner of the Best Actress Award was Olivia Colman. She won for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite.

The winner of Best Supporting Actor was Mahershala Ali in Green Book for his role as Don Shirley.

Regina King won Best Supporting Actress in If Beale Street Could Talk as Sharon Rivers.

This year’s Best Picture award went to Green Book. Best Animated Feature went to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Best Director went to Alfonso Cuarón for Roma. He also won Foreign Language Film for Roma, and Best Cinematography for Roma.

Best Original Music Score went to Black Panther with Ludwig Göransson. Black Panther also won Best Costume Design with Ruth E. Carter, and Best Production Design with Jay R. Hart and Hannah Beachler.

Best Original song went to “Shallow” written by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt.

Best Adapted Screenplay (which is a screenplay based on a book) went to Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee, Charlie Wachtel, and David Rabinowitz for BlacKKlansman.

Speaking of winners, the winner of the Best Actor Award, Rami Malek, accidentally ended the awards ceremony with a bang. Or rather, a thud. According to People, Malek fell off of the stage shortly after finishing his acceptance speech. By that time, the televised production had finished, so the incident did not appear on TV. However, there are pictures circulating the internet. They show a startled Malek on the ground, having just stumbled into the crowd.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper also gave an impressive performance of the song “Shallow” from the movie A Star Is Born. “Shallow” won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Before Gaga and Cooper even got on stage, the crowd applauded them. Many news sources are calling the performance iconic and amazing, and they’re not wrong. It was packed with emotion and the song is beautifully written.

Overall, we are sure this year’s Oscars are going to be remembered for quite some time.

Movies to see in 2019

2018 had some really good movies, but most of them weren’t worth the ten dollars it costs to go see them in the theaters. 2019 is sounding like it will be much more promising when it comes to movies worth seeing though. 2019 will bring movies of all genres: animated movies, comedies, super hero movies and even some good looking horror movies. There are also a lot of sequels coming out like Frozen 2 or Avengers: Endgame.

Before I go any further, this article is going to based completely off my own opinion. I’m not basing the movies mentioned off any criteria other than what I’m excited to watch.

So here are the top ** movies coming out this year:

Captain MarvelMarch 8, 2019

The movie takes place in the 1990s and introduces the world to Carol Danvers, the Air Force pilot who obtains superpowers.

Us – March 22, 2019

Jordan Peele is writting this movie as a follow-up to his previous movie, Get Out.

Dumbo – March 29, 2019

This movie is going to be a live action version of Disney’s animated movie by the same name. The movie is going to be directed by Tim Burton, so you know it will be good.

Shazam! – April 5, 2019

The DC movie is about a teen who receives the power to transform into an adult with the powers like strength, flight, and many others.

Pet Semetary – April 5, 2019

Another Stephen King story brought to life.

The Curse of La Llorona – April 19, 2019

This movie is based off the legend of La Llorona. I don’t think this movie will be done very well, but I’m excited to see what they do with the aspects of the legend.

Avengers: Endgame – April 26, 2019

The movie is going to continue on with the story told in Avengers: Infinity War. This movie will also kill off some main characters.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu – May 10, 2019

It looks like the story line for the movie isnt great, but Ryan Reynolds is always funny so I’m going to see it.

The Lion King – July 19, 2019

Another live action Disney remake. I’m excited though.

It: Chapter 2 – September 6, 2019

The story will take place when the children from the first movie are adults.

Aladdin – May 24, 2019

Again, another live action Disney remake. The actor for Aladdin, Mena Massoud, looks like a good fit to play the Arabian character but, in my opinion, the actor playing Jasmine doesn’t.

Men in Black International – June 14, 2019

It’s about time.

Childs Play – June 21, 2019

Another remake of the Chucky movie. The doll always scared me so I guess the movie serves its purpose.

Toy Story 4 – June 21

Apparently they are going to continue to make these without Andy.

Grudge – August 16, 2019

I never watched the old Grudge movie so I’m excited to watch this version of the Japanese remake.

Ford vs Ferarri – June 28. 2019

These kinds of movies always look boring but turn out to be good at the end. This movie is about the American car company Ford’s efforts to build a race worthy car to beat the Ferrari team at the 1966, 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The story is based off of true events.

Spiderman: Far From Home – July 5, 2019

Turns out Spiderman isn’t one the characters who die in Avengers: Endgame.

The Addams family – October 11, 2019

This is going to be animated.

Even though 2019 is apparently the year of the remakes and sequels, a couple of movies I don’t think needed to be done again were Hellboy, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. The original Hellboy movie was great, the generation that liked the Angry Birds are too old to want to watch the new movie, and the first 47 Meters Down was not a good movie; I don’t think the second one will be any better.

Does T.V. rot your brain?

Most people, if they have ever looked at a T.V. for too long, have been told that it would rot their brain. But does it really rot it? Well, it turns out your brain isn’t going to rot like a fruit, but there is evidence of it being harmful to your brain when you are young.

According to an article on Scientificamerican.com  watching T.V. at a young age, for prolonged amounts of time, can increase the chance of the child being more antisocial, obese and of having mental health problems. Also, “Previous studies have shown that for each additional hour of television watched in childhood, the odds of developing symptoms of depression increase by 8 percent and the odds of being convicted of a crime increase by 27 percent. And other findings suggest that for every two hours watched in one’s youth, the odds of developing type 2 diabetes increase by 20 percent.”

So, it does seem like watching too much T.V. can lead to some major problems later on in life, but in a recent study they tested pairs of siblings to see any genetic correlation between a person and T.V. The test showed that there seems to be a correlation between people’s genetics and T.V. In the article, they said, “Children with increased predisposition toward aggressive behavior may be more drawn to TV.”

“Similarly, those who are genetically inclined to depression or obesity may be more likely to spend their free time watching T.V. in the family room rather than shooting hoops on the basketball court.”

So, there’s evidence that the problems found in the original research would have happened anyway because that’s in their genetics.

The answer to the question of if T.V. rots your brain or not, seems to be that T.V. can have harmful effects on your brain if you watch it for too long at a young age, but also whatever might happen to you because of watching T.V. might happen to you anyway.

‘Aladdin’ 2019

Disney has released the first movie trailer for their live-action Aladdin movie, and we get to see the first look of the Cave of Wonder. The director is Guy Ritchie, who is known for his crime films such as: Sherlock Holmes, Snatch, and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. It was an unusual director choice for Disney, and caused some Twitter feeds to express their unhappiness, but Ritchie responded, “With five kids, I know as much or more about kid’s movies than any other type of movies.”

It is reported that Aladdin will be including music in the film like Beauty and the Beast did, and it was one of the things that the producers had to deal with when they were casting actors and actresses. It required that the actors or actresses had to have the ability to sing.

In July of 2017, the cast for Jasmine, Aladdin, and Jafar was announced. There was a backlash from many people when they found out that Naomi Scott was cast as Jasmine. Some people claimed that Naomi Scott looked too pale or that she was not Middle Eastern. Naomi is of mixed British and Gujarati Indian descent. People argued that Disney is reinforcing the idea that South Asian and Middle Eastern are interchangeable.

The role of Aladdin went to Mena Massoud, which many people approved of. Massoud has primarily been a TV actor and has a significant amount of experience in acting. He appears on Amazon’s Jack Ryan series. From what we know, Massoud does not have any significant singing experience, but everyone is quite excited to see Massoud as Aladdin.

Robin Williams voicing the Genie was an iconic performance, and so Ritchie decided to go a different route and casted Will Smith. It was reported that Will Smith was very excited to accept the role and hopes to do well.

For the role of Jafar, Disney has cast Marwan Kenzari. Kenzari has been in The Mummy and The Promise but there is not much about him yet that we know of.

Jasmine’s dad, Sultan, has not been cast yet, and there hasn’t been news about it.

For the animal characters, there hasn’t been anything about Abu, but it does appear that Rajah does play a part in the movie. There is a chance there could be CGI animals in the movie but Disney has not released a statement about it yet.

There is a new character, named Prince Anders, which Disney has cast Billy Magnussen for, and the chief of the guard will be played by Numan Acar. Another new character added in the movie is a friend of Jasmine’s named Mara who will be played by Nasim Pedrad.

The trailer of Aladdin just released, and seems that the production has already finished shooting most of the movie. Aladdin will be in theaters in May of 2019.

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ review

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has just hit it’s 13th season, bringing it closer and closer to being the longest running live-action sitcom. The premiere for this season, titled “The Gang Makes Paddy’s Great Again,” has recently aired, and it was…just okay.

The first notable difference in this season is the absence of Dennis (Glenn Howerton). In the season 12 finale, Dennis left to North Dakota, so he could be a father to his son. This was because Howerton was doing another show, and didn’t know if he could do Sunny along with it. He had been there since the first season, offering angry outbursts and a chin chiseled by the gods themselves, it was sad to see him go.

His replacement was Cindy, played by Mindy Kaling (her most notable role being Kelly Kapoor from The Office). In Sunny, Kaling plays a manipulative women, who knows how to get Paddy’s more customers through lies and, well, manipulation. We first see her speaking to a crowd in Paddy’s, explaining how welcoming the gang had been, and that it is a great bar for people of all religions, sexuality, and gender.

As soon as her speech is over we cut to the back office, where Cindy explains that they finally got the “liberal crowd” for Paddy’s. It was a fake speech meant to entice the left to Paddy’s, so they could have more customers. The gang thanks her, and we learn that next they’ll be going for the conservatives by “Making Paddy’s Great Again.”

We cut to Mac’s apartment. This is where Mac decides to unveil his new abs, so it looks like we’ve come a long way from season seven’s “Fat Mac.” We then learn that Mac also bought a Dennis look-alike doll, that really creeps out the rest of the gang. This doll is what turns the episode from a political satire to a whole new plot.

Cindy eventually shows up, and explains her whole plan, and tells Mac to get rid of the doll. But he doesn’t. When the gang gets ready to do the plan, it seems to be perfectly fine. Dee is beautiful, Frank can play the tuba, Mac and Charlie have wonderfully decorated “Liberal Tears” signs for the right-wingers.

But the plan falls apart when the Dennis doll gets in their heads. The gang swears they can the hear the doll talking to them, saying everything that Dennis would say. This confuses Cindy, and of course makes her angry as it is making her plan fall apart. Dee ruins her make-up, Charlie and Mac ruin the signs, and Frank can no longer play the tuba. Everything is destroyed due to this doll, and therefore, because of Dennis.

Which is why, when Dennis comes back, Cindy gets so upset. It’s understandable, he ruined her plans and constantly bashes the gang, but he’s a part of them. That’s why it’s also so understandable that the gang lets him back in.

Dennis returns in a creepy fashion, which is very true to his character. The gang is talking about the doll, when all of a sudden we hear it talk. Well, we think we do. The camera actually pans right, revealing real life Dennis standing there accompanied with a jumpscare sound effect.

Dennis makes his remarks, Cindy argues that they shouldn’t let him in the gang, but they do. She leaves in a huff, and the episode ends with the original gang all back together. Dennis asks Mac if he’s gained weight, and we cut to the credits.

So, overall the episode felt very…forced. Of course, this could have been on purpose because Mindy Kaling was forced into the group as a replacement for Dennis, and the creators made the show feel like how the gang felt. But it doesn’t help that there were few laughs, and the sound quality didn’t seem to be the best.

It’s a good episode, it did it’s job, but I also don’t think it was at it’s best. Hopefully, the rest of the season does go above and beyond as Sunny is shown it is be able to do.

Why are books usually better than their movie

By: Mateo Barrera

The movie version of a book usually is made after the book has had major success. This has happened to many books including the Harry Potter series, the Percy Jackson series, and the Maze Runner series to name a few.  All of these movies have been super successful, take Harry Potter for example, which grossed 7.7 billion dollars in 2012, after The Deathly Hallows Part 2 came out. However, a lot of movie versions of books don’t quite meet the expectations of the people who read the book. Here are some of the reasons that cause that.

The characters and their actors

One of the major parts of books is giving the basic description of a character, but also letting readers imagine how the characters look. However, an actor can’t always look exactly like the character in the book. For this reason readers will often believe that the movie will be an inaccurate representation of their favorite characters.

They change the original story

In some movies they change the original story to something else, add new things that never happened in the book, or cut scenes from the original story. This can either be good or bad, but in some cases it is bad. It’s bad because sometimes people want to see their favorite scenes from a book put onto the big screen, but then it turns out it has been cut out of the movie entirely. Sometimes when they add or cut things it creates plot holes in the story.

Characters thoughts

Probably the biggest reason for a book being better is the inclusion of a character’s thoughts. Books include thoughts to make characters’ actions make more sense, add extra detail to a character’s feelings or emotions, and also to make the story continue without just missing a bunch of important things. But in a movie, the inclusion of a character’s thoughts never really happens because it can ruin the pace of a movie and the mood, and make a movie really dull and boring. Because of this, you can really only tell a character’s emotions and feelings from their facial expressions, body language, and how they speak. This makes it hard to tell how a character is truly feeling.

All of these reasons usually end up making the original book better than their movie counterparts.

Top 5 fascinating things you didn’t know about ‘High School Musical’

According to TheTHINGS.com, there are 15 things about High School Musical that were hidden 10 years ago, and some fun facts you didn’t know. Here are the 5 things from the list that I felt were the most interesting, but for the entire list, click on this link: https://www.thethings.com/15-things-you-never-knew-about-high-school-musical/

  1. The movie wasn’t supposed to be called High School Musical. The title was just a placeholder because they weren’t sure what to name it, but they kept the name at the end of finishing up the first movie.
  2. Zac Efron didn’t sing Troy’s singing parts in the first movie. The sweet vocals from the first movie came from Drew Seeley who auditioned for Troy’s character. Seeley sang songs like “What I’ve Been Looking For” and “Get’cha Head In The Game” but Efron, the one who played Troy, sang parts of “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free”. The reason why Efron barely sang most of the songs was because his voice was too low for the parts. But in the next 2 movies, Efron was given all of the singing parts because his natural voice could work well.
  3. The snow at the beginning of the movie was actually potatoes. So when Troy and Gabriella first met, it was New Year’s Eve and snowing. It has been proven that it wasn’t snowing, and that it was flakes of potatoes after all. This wasn’t the first food product replaced as the real thing; in Pirates of the Caribbean, they used chocolate powder instead of dirt.
  4. Sharpay’s pink locker still exists since “High School Musical” used a real school to film the movie. The school they used in the show is real and is still operating today. The school is called East High, and it’s located in Salt Lake City, Utah, but what is fascinating is that Sharpay’s iconic pink locker is still there, and any student can have that locker each year.
  5. High School Musical 4 is coming out very soon, but there isn’t an exact date. This movie will be more about East High vs. West High and new characters may appear. One of them is Sharpay and Ryan’s cousin Campbell. Also, it is said that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens will, or will not, be on the same set. But it’ll still be interesting just like the last 3 movies.
