Fire safety

Did you notice the haze in the sky last week? Or was it harder for you to breathe? This was because of the wildfires in Northern Minnesota. The fires started around May 6th in the Hoyt Lakes area and burned a total of about 1,000 acres over a six day period. People were evacuated from their homes because of the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Fire safety is always an important issue but the risks are even higher in the summer months. Many people do not know how important it is to be aware of the rules that the DNR have in place for the different regions in Minnesota. Some people may think they are following the rules, but they usually aren’t.

Spring burning restrictions have been put into place in Minnesota and it is important that people look at these restrictions before they plan to have a campfire or anything of that nature. It is important to look at these rules because if you get caught breaking them, the consequences can be mighty.

If you are wondering where you can find the rules/restrictions, you can visit http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teachers across the country work hard everyday and often go unappreciated. This year, Barack Obama signed a proclamation making this week (May 1st-May 7th) officially teacher appreciation week. Some students might not know exactly how you can show your teacher how much you appreciate them but these are some things you can do or buy for your teacher to show them just that according to an article from Education World.

  • Write them a handwritten note – Teachers like to know what they do to engage you while teaching so write them a handwritten note talking about what you like most about their class. Making it handwritten shows that you put a lot of time and effort into it and shows that you care.
  • Bring them a treat – This can be anything from an apple to cookies. Before hand, you could ask them what their favorite snacks are so you have a general idea of what to get for them.
  • Give them a gift card – Gift cards to places like Target are helpful because teachers always need supplies!
  • Give them a bag of coffee or a box of tea – Teachers often stay up late grading work so giving them coffee or tea will help them out on those late nights.
  • Show them respect – Even though this is something students should always do, make sure to especially show them how much you respect what they do for you everyday of the school year!

Even if you don’t have the money or if you’re too busy to write a note, just tell your teachers how much they do for you sometime during the day, it only takes a few seconds but it makes a difference.

Road trip essentials

As we all know, summer is quickly approaching and that means road trip season. Road trips can either be very fun or very boring, it all depends on how you prepare for them. This list of tips and tricks will help you have the best summer road trip experiences possible!

  • Wear comfortable clothing – If you plan on napping or just relaxing, you don’t want to be wearing constrictive clothing.
  • Bring a lot of water – In some rural areas, there won’t be any rest stops for hours away so you won’t have many chances to buy a water or fill up your bottle. It’s also important because if you have car trouble while on the highway, you will want to stay hydrated out in the hot summer sun.
  • Stop at rest stops whenever possible – Even if you don’t need to use the restroom or take a quick nap, it’s good to stop and use the restroom or fill up your water bottle because it’s hard to know when the next time you will be able to stop.
  • Bring snacks – It’s always a good idea to have food with you because good restaurants can sometimes be hard to come by.
  • Bring a car charger – Sometimes, when you don’t have cell service, your phone will roam and that will drain the battery so it is a good idea to always have one on hand.
  • Have a positive attitude – Even though it might be hard to think about having to be in a car with your siblings for a long period of time, you should stay positive throughout your trip because your attitude influences the outcome of your overall experience!

MCA opt out

Standardized testing can help some but hinder others. In Minnesota, we take the MCAs and every year students go through the stress of getting prepared for taking these standardized tests. The word has gotten out that there is an option to opt out of these tests, and in some ways this can be helpful, but as a whole it could end up hurting our schools.

The results from these standardized tests determines if some schools need more staff and teachers, or if some schools might not need any support. This means that if the results are low across the board that means the school is struggling and it may need more staff to help the students. If the results are high this means that the school probably does not need any support, and they may even be awarded for the high scores.

I asked Ms. Esso, a counselor here at Highland, some general questions about opting out of MCA tests. She said that if a student wanted to opt out of testing, their parent or guardian could write a formal letter to the principal explaining that the student is going to opt out and why they made that decision. The letter should be delivered before the testing process begins so that the testing coordinator knows not to keep sending passes to that student to take the test.

Some people may think that standardized tests, like the MCAs, don’t serve a purpose, but they do. If a school is generally struggling, their test scores could help with the opportunity to revamp the school’s approach to testing. But if enough students decided to opt out, the overall test scores wouldn’t show how the whole school was doing from an academic standpoint. On the other hand, schools that are excelling could get awards and that not only makes the school look good, but the whole district.

College visit tips and tricks

College visits can be daunting and hard to prepare for. After a few visits, you start to figure out how to prepare for future visits. Here are a few tips and tricks that I have come up with after going on multiple visits.

  • Wear comfortable clothing – Since most tours include a campus tour, you will be moving around a lot. Wearing comfortable clothing will help you focus more on the actual tour and not worry about your aching feet or your warm sweater.
  • Stay hydrated – Most college visits can last a few hours. When you take the campus tour you will be taking lots of stairs and you will be walking around quite a lot. Staying hydrated is key to making sure you won’t be distracted by how thirsty you are.
  • Take notes – College visits almost always include an admissions presentation. There is always important information that you’ll need to know so it is a good idea to bring a small notepad with a pen or pencil. When you go back to compare the admission requirements, it will be easier with the notes you took during the presentation.
  • Talk to a current student – It is always important to talk to someone who is currently attending the college because they have first hand experiences. During some admission presentations, colleges will have a student panel and you can ask your burning questions.
  • Visit centers of student life – If you visit while school is in session, make sure to visit a dining hall or student union. This will give you an idea to what the student atmosphere is like and you might even be able to try some of the food because of course that’s very important.
  • Ask about campus safety – While on a campus tour, make sure to ask your guide about campus safety. Most colleges have on campus security and emergency call stations located around campus. It is very important that you feel safe while on campus.
  • Ask about financial aid – Some colleges have a large number as their sticker price but this should not be a deal breaker when you decide where you want to go. Many colleges have scholarships that you are automatically entered into when you apply. For example, colleges will give you a certain amount of money if you meet certain criteria like your GPA and ACT/SAT scores. Also, filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will help you understand how much the government is willing to give you in terms of student aid.
  • Visit residence halls – When on a campus tour, make sure you check out the residence halls. Colleges usually have many different types of rooms like a single, a double or suite style. Visiting halls will make it easier to choose the type of room you want when you apply for housing/residence.

Wage rage

Have you ever noticed how much professional athletes get paid compared to the average American doing manual labor? The highest paid American athlete in 2015 earned around $300 million dollars in 2015, meanwhile the minimum wage is $7.25. Minimum wage jobs like fast food cooks, cashiers and dishwashers are daily, hard working, manual labor jobs and the benefits usually aren’t great. Professional athletes like boxers, basketball players and football players do their job occasionally and get paid millions of dollars and the benefits are endless.

I believe that this is quite a big problem. Workers who do hours of labor get paid very little and have to support themselves, and maybe even a family while earning just over $15,000 dollars annually. This seems quite unfair compared to athletes who have weekly games where they do their job and get paid millions for very little labor.

Now, I do understand that you have to be in excellent shape to be a professional athlete, and there are some risks while playing these sports, but it doesn’t seem fair that they are being paid millions of dollars when many manual labor jobs also include those risks. For example in order to be a quick and efficient waiter/waitress you do have to be in shape as well.

These jobs do require different skills and different types of hard work but the difference in the amount they get paid is far too large. Now, of course I do not think minimum wage jobs should earn millions of dollars but neither should professional athletes.

Our ever-warming planet

Did it feel warmer than usual to you last year? Well you’re not the only one. 2015 has officially gone down as the warmest year on record since 1880 when they first started keeping track of global temperatures. Not only was 2015 the hottest year on record, it was also a part of a 39 year streak of above average temperatures. What’s the cause of these crazy numbers? According to the third U.S National Climate assessment “The global warming of the past 50 years is primarily due to human activities, predominantly the burning of fossil fuels.” The burning of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide and natural processes cannot fully absorb those gasses so the rest of it ends up going into the atmosphere. All of this has many harmful effects on ecosystems, biodiversity, and of course us humans.

In December, the 2015 United Nations Climate Change conference was held in Paris and the 195 participating countries agreed to a global pact named the Paris Agreement. These countries agreed to reduce emissions to try and reduce the greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere. This agreement is to be adopted through these countries’ legal systems and by doing so, they are then required to try to reduce their emissions. Many people have said that this is a big step to help the rising temperatures.

This may seem like a daunting task to many, but I believe that we already know the solution to these problems. Renewable energy resources like solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy are the greatest alternatives to burning fossil fuels. The earth does not have infinite amounts of fossil fuels, and burning them is just damaging our planet. Thankfully there are is an infinite amount of renewable energy resources and these will not damage the planet.

Another problem with fossil fuels is that  those sources are spread out and some countries don’t have any. Renewable sources can be found anywhere, and most countries have at least one.

Therefore, I believe that if the world would start to switch over to these renewable energy sources, and continue to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, global warming might slowly become something of the past.

Your favorite mall just got bigger

If you have been to the Mall of America recently, you may have noticed the large extension to the mall that just opened right before the rush of the holiday season.

Even before any of the physical additions had been added on, the mall changed their logo in 2013 to start the process of creating a new image.

The mall has also undergone physical renovations to the inside of the main original mall. They started to replace the old dated brown and yellow flooring and uncomfortable benches throughout the mall and put in new modern white flooring and new sitting options. These renovations to the original mall are still happening and will continue until they have completed the modernization phase.

The new additions include a completely new north grand entrance and offers a new modern walkway into the mall. It also includes a JW Marriott and a medium size multipurpose building that they have said will be used for office space, more nightlife and entertainment options and smaller boutique style retail.

The north food court was also revamped and has many new high end food chain restaurants along with a few cheap fast food restaurants, the new higher end restaurants are opening in the near future.

The owners of the Mall Of America (Triple Five Group) have also submitted plans to expand the mall even more in phases. They plan on having the next phase open by October of 2018 and this will include high end retail, a hotel, more parking and much more. By the end of all of these additions, the mall will comprise of 8.8 million square feet.

Foodies for thought

Sometimes gift giving to foodies can be difficult, but with this gift guide you and a family member can team up and give the best gifts of the holiday season.

Many coffee lovers know how tiring the same old flavors of boring plain coffee can get, and how it’s hard to replicate a drink from their favorite coffee shop. The Keurig system takes little pods and turns them into hot fresh cups of coffee. There are many different companies who have teamed up with Keurig, such as Starbucks, to bring to you the flavor of their coffee to your own home. The machine itself can run a little pricey but it is worth it when you don’t feel like going out for a cup of coffee. http://www.keurig.com/Brewers/Home/Keurig®-2-0-K550-Brewing-System/p/keurig-2-0-k550-brewing-system

Juicing your food is something that has recently become very popular. Most juicers don’t do your fruits and vegetables justice. The Nutri Bullet RX actually keeps all of the precious fibers that make the fruits and veggies healthy. This makes your juice just as healthy as eating your food in a solid form. Juicers can be very expensive though, for instance if you want the Nutri Bullet RX, but the cheaper the make, the less expensive. https://www.nutribulletrx.com

Going out and buying soda for a party can be pretty pricey at the checkout. The Sodastream uses water and flavor pods and creates soda that tastes exactly like the name brand. Water is something that almost everyone has and it is an ample resource. The flavor pods are costly but it is a convenient way to always have soda on hand. https://www.sodastreamusa.com/play-starter-kit-p591.aspx

Sandwiches are the classic snack whenever you really need a quick bite to eat. Paninis are something that you used to only be able to get at specialty restaurants, but with a panini press you can finally make them yourself! These can run pretty pricy if you want one that tells you when your sandwich is done, but the cheaper models will also get the job done. http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-GR-1-Griddler-Panini-Sandwich/dp/B000CPZXGO

Using a full size blender can be a hassle when you have little counter space, especially when you’re trying to make lots of sweets for special occasions. This is why a simple hand blender will make any baking job much easier. http://www.qvc.com/KitchenAid-Two-Speed-Hand-Blender.product.K301210.html?sc=K301210-Targeted&cm_sp=VIEWPOSITION-_-3-_-K301210&catentryImage=http://images.qvc.com/is/image/k/10/k301210.001?$uslarge$

Scot-A-Palooza

On Sunday, November 1st, friends and family of Highland Park and Capitol Hill students gathered in The Shanty at O’Gara’s Bar and Grill to listen to some great music. Many groups performed including the Highland Park Senior High jazz band, the Highland Park Junior High jazz band, The Capitol Hill jazz band, a few string trios and even some bands that people from our own school created. There was a silent auction, gift card grab, and even a drawing to win four tickets to a Minnesota Vikings game!

There was a lot of Highland pride shown throughout the night from the musical acts. The Highland Park Senior High jazz band, lead by Joel Matuzak, played many songs including “Birdland” arranged by Michael Sweeney and “A Night In Tunisia” also arranged by Michael Sweeney. They played with a lot of energy and they were a real hit among the crowd. Some of our own Highland Park Senior High students preformed in their own bands like Escaping Evolution and Makeshift. The crowd really seemed to enjoy the different vibe these bands brought to the event.

This event was created to help raise money for the instrumental music program at our school. The money that was raised will go towards fixing instruments, buying new instruments, buying chairs and stands, and many other items.

Schools around the country have been cutting funding to art programs in schools and many have been struggling to keep the programs alive and running. Thankfully, here at Highland we have many active parents who want to support the program, and they make events like these possible. There are a few people that especially helped, such as Vineeta Sawkar, Katie Sterns, and of course our own instrumental music teacher Joel Matuzak.

I think this was a great way to raise money but also to enjoy the musical talent of many Highland students.
