Tailored to the theme: Top 10 Met Gala looks

By; Hermekay Dehaney

The 2025 Met Gala theme was, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with the dress code being, “Tailored for you.” The theme was a way to honor and pay homage to Black Dandyism.  André Leon Talley, who epitomized Black dandyism, was a fashion journalist, and one of Anna Wintour’s close friends. He was known to wear tailored clothing, bold colors, and accessories which are characteristics of Black dandyism. This theme hinted more towards menswear while the dress code also gave the guests a chance to wear something that suited them. It was also noted that the dress code was “purposefully designed to provide guidance and invite creative interpretation.”

I will rank my favorite look from what is considered fashion’s biggest night, and how well they showed off their best interpretation of the Met Gala theme.

10. Damson Idris wearing Tommy Hilfiger

Coming in 10th place, Damson Idris wore a custom white racing suit, and a red, white, and blue helmet that featured 20,000 Swarovski crystals on it to promote his upcoming film, ‘F1.’ After that, Idris revealed another outfit underneath, a custom-made matching red tuxedo suit alongside the Tommy Tartan plaid that had “80 hours-worth of gold beading contrast against the special print.” His accessories featured a brooch and some personal jewelry from his brand collection.

I think his outfit went perfectly with the theme. It had bold colors and was the perfect representation of dandyism with its timeless elements.

9. Khaby Lame wearing BOSS

Khaby Lame made his Met Gala debut wearing a custom BOSS suit, which he has collaborated with before on numerous campaigns. His look featured vintage pocket clocks on his waistcoat, which is a nod to the dandyism theme. It was a three-piece grey suit with a matching hat, a white shirt, and a tie. The outfit also had a trench coat, which was only on one shoulder.

His look complemented the theme by elevating menswear.

8. Caleb McLaughlin wearing Dior

Making his Met Gala debut, Caleb McLaughlin, best known for ‘Stranger Things’, wore a grey suit that had an orange collar. His look was accessorized by colorful brooches, pins, a silk tie, teal gloves, a cane, and a Zenith DEFY Skyline sapphire watch. His look had a unique flair, elegance, and contemporary elements which went with the theme.

7. Sarah Snook wearing anOnlyChild

The Australian actress Sarah Snook, known for her role in the show, ‘Succession,’  had an outfit that consisted of a tailored tuxedo suit with a cape at the bottom that had red to it. Her outfit was complemented with multiple silver and red brooches by Rahaminov Diamonds and Saidian Vintage Jewels. She told Variety, “I also looked at photos from the 1980s, and Annie Lennox with that androgynous fashion and wide shoulders.” This look is in my top 10 because I love how she embedded black menswear while also tailoring to herself.

6. Brian Tyree Henry wearing Orange Culture

Link to his outfit: https://tomandlorenzo.com/2025/05/meta-gala-2025-brian-tyree-henry-in-orange-culture-re-dcarpet-fashion-style/

Brian Tyree Henry, an American actor secured the 6th spot with his very bold and vibrant look. He wore a custom-tailored red suit with a coat over it. The look showed hints of gold and featured some embroidery, brooches, boots, gloves, and a leather tie. He embodied the theme and was one of the few to pay tribute to André Leon Talley.

5. Nicki Minaj wearing Tom Browne

Link to her outfit: https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/a64658194/nicki-minaj-red-carpet-photos-2025-met-gala/?scrlybrkr=71a41ac8

Instead of wearing a fitted suit, Nicki Minaj chose to transform a black and white striped pantsuit into a fitted gown with a mermaid-style skirt. One of her shoulders featured floral ruffles, which made the look even more unique and added a more tailored touch to it. To top it off, her hair was in this updo with a gold floral headpiece; she also had on some bright blue nails which gave the look a hint of color.

She did a wonderful job balancing homage and individuality in her look; her look was sharp, and bold, which is why I put it in 5th place.

4. Jodie Turner-Smith wearing Burberry

Link to her outfit: https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/jodie-turner-smith-met-gala-2025

Jodie Turner-Smith honored her heritage by wearing Burberry, a popular designer brand, she said, “Burberry is such a classic British brand, and it’s extra special to work with a fashion house that is representative of my roots, my beginnings.” She wore a tailored burgundy leather coat dress, and her look paid homage to Selika Lazevski, a Black equestrian who lived in Paris. Her look featured a cinched waist and a bustle which was a nod to the Victorian era in Selika Lazevski’s portrait. Her look was topped off with a tall hat that was angled at the side of her head. Her look was effortlessly timeless which is why I put her in 4th place.

3. Cardi B wearing Burberry

Link to her outfit: https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/a64670743/cardi-b-red-carpet-photos-2025-met-gala/

Cardi B wore a green velvet-length suit with embroidery on it. Her stylist,  Daniel Lee told Vogue, “For Cardi’s look, we liked the idea of a tailored, feminine dandy.” Underneath her open back coat, she wore a devoré shirt that had ruffles and cuffs, and matching green trousers. Daniel Lee took inspiration from 19th-style outfits, saying, “There was one particular image we found of an emerald green gown from the 19th century: The back of the gown had a circular cutout that, for the time, would have been controversial. We liked this idea of nonconformity, keeping with the spirit of dandyism.” The sharp tailoring gave the outfit a more elegant and luxurious vibe which is why she is in my top 3.

2. Ugbad is wearing Michael Kors

Link to her outfit: https://www.desmoinesregister.com/picture-gallery/entertainment/2025/05/06/2025-met-gala-looks-ugbad-abdi/83478957007/

Coming in 2nd place is Ugbad. She wore a customer Michael Kors collection which paid tribute to the late André Leon Talley. Her look had a metallic charcoal paisley brocade cape with a faux silver fox collar, paired with a charcoal embroidered crystal pinstripe trouser suit. The outfit was accessorized with a bow tie, and a hat, the perfect example of the dandy style.

1. Teyana Taylor wearing Marc Jacobs

Link to her outfit: https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Style/teyana-taylor-met-gala-2025/story?id=121509281

In the first place, we have Teyana Taylor. This look was widely praised all over social media, because it’s the perfect representation of the theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Teyana Taylor wore a custom burgundy zoot suit ensemble-inspired outfit. The look featured feathers, lace, crystals, and a hat with a matching durag. She also added some personal touches to her outfit by featuring an embroidery of her 2018 song, “Rose in Harlem.”

The intriguing Minnesota Starvation Project

By: Maeve Brady

Starvation is a very common part of suffering, impoverished countries, communities, and so on. When humans are faced with it, there could be numerous consequences. For example, terrible illnesses, continuous suffering, and in many cases, death. Throughout history, many have tried to prevent it, yet famine and the starvation of the human body is too vast and difficult to fully resolve. Yet that hasn’t stopped many from trying to find solutions for it and see the effects of starvation in general. This leads me to a very infamous psychology project conducted at the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Starvation Project. Today, I will try my best to give an in depth explanation of what exactly it was and its findings.

To start off, we must know exactly what the project was and its background. Ancel Keys, the psychologist in charge of the University of Minnesota, was eager to take on a huge and impactful challenge of conducting an experiment based around the starvation of its subjects. This experiment had the goal of figuring out not only the physical effects of starvation on its participants, but also the psychological effects it may have. It also worked towards discovering at what point they could essentially be “rehabilitated” back into full health both mentally and physically. Along with Ancel Keys, Josef Brozek also joined in the conducting of the experiments in 1944, after he had newly joined the Minnesota lab in 1941. A couple years after Brozek had joined, in November 1944, thirty-six young men were chosen out of over two hundred to partake in the experiment. Like many experiments, there were requirements, especially for its participants. For the Minnesota Starvation Project, the young men had to be of good health, meaning they had to be a good weight- at least what was considered to be a good weight- and had to have pretty good health in general. Along with the fact that they had to take psychological tests to ensure they were “normal” and all on the same level. This made it so all the men were essentially on “an even playing field”, so when observing the changes in the men, they could find some consistency. After these thirty-six men were chosen out of the hundreds, they took up residence in the corridors of the University of Minnesota’s football stadium due to space requirements and other variables-to prevent getting in the way of the other students.

According to Dr. David Baker and Natasha Keramidas, psychologists who wrote an article about the Minnesota Starvation Project for the American Psychological Association, “The research protocol called for the men to lose 25 percent of their normal body weight. They spent the first three months of the study eating a normal diet of 3,200 calories a day, followed by six months of semi-starvation at 1,570 calories a day (divided between breakfast and lunch), then a restricted rehabilitation period of three months eating 2,000 to 3,200 calories a day, and finally an eight-week unrestricted rehabilitation period during which there were no limits on caloric intake.” This demonstrates that at the start they were required to intake the standard amount of calories just to observe their health and overall mood, yet as the months passed, they slowly started to decrease into this six month period of semi-starvation with the researchers only providing one thousand five hundred and seventy calories for the subjects. This is approximately around one thousand six hundred and thirty calories less than before.

After the six months of the monitored starvation, they switched initiatives into rehabilitation by giving them the standard amount of calories whilst also giving them an unrestricted limit on the weekends and some limits during the weekdays. During this semi-starvation period, the changes in these young men were drastic. Some of the drastic changes were that the men quickly lost weight and had a sickly appearance. Not only was there this significant decrease in weight, but also significant decreases in overall body temperature and heart rate. Also, not only were there physical effects on the men but also psychological effects such as an increased obsession. This obsession was with food. The lack of consumption made some of the men go crazy in a sense, with the constant fantasizing about food in this repetitive way. Along with more physical effects of irritability, depression, and fatigue. This especially proved to be arduous for some men, with three subjects breaking their diet and/or not meeting the weight loss requirements.

But, what may be the most notable about the experiment is the recovery process of the participants. Like I mentioned before, after the semi-starvation period, they started slowly reintroducing more calories into the subject’s life, but as they did so, there were some unexpected results. Many assumed that after introducing food back into the subjects’ lives, they may gain weight very quickly, but in fact it was the opposite of this. Instead of re-gaining all the weight back quickly, the participants actually gained weight even slower than the slowest time the researchers anticipated, along with the fact that many did not gain any weight at the start and in fact lost more. After monitoring the subjects for a while, the results that they found were that the subjects endured gastrointestinal issues, excessive hunger, and even some gaining more weight than before, although staying the same weight after some time into the rehabilitation. This further proved that the weight gain after starvation is an extremely arduous process that can have many different outcomes, although this is still being researched.

Like many experiments, there is a reason for conducting it, and in the case of the Minnesota Starvation Project, it is very complex. During WWII-when this experiment was conducted-many Americans had encountered Europeans being starved, especially in Germany. In Germany, due to Jews being deemed as evil scapegoats, they were placed in concentration camps, with Adolf Hitler, the dictator at the time, having the goal of killing them. And, one way to do this was starving them. So, at these camps all the Jews and other prisoners of war were terribly starved, which was obvious through their physical appearance and overall drowsy and irritable moods. After the United States discovery of this, a complex question arose. “How fast can one be rehabilitated from almost complete and/or complete starvation of the human body, and what psychological effects would that have?” So, in order to test this, many young men who weren’t serving in the military decided to sign up in hopes to help contribute to their country in some form, in this case, medical research. To be more specific, because these men who weren’t fighting in WWII may have been ashamed of not serving their country, many still wanted to help contribute to the war cause and thus signed up to help further medical research.

Thank you for following me along as I gave an in-depth explanation of what the Minnesota Starvation project was and its intentions. I hope you have gained a better understanding and possible interest in this subject!

S’mores cookie bar review

By: Alice Rapacz

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs (around 8 full sheets)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 heaping cup marshmallow creme (fluff)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line an 8-inch square baking pan or 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and brown sugar on medium-high speed until fluffy (about 2 minutes).
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined. (It may look curdled but that is ok) scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
  4. In a separate medium bowl mix together the flour, graham cracker crumb, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet and mix on medium speed until combined.
  6. In your prepared baking pan, spread ⅔ of the cookie dough onto the bottom of the pan. The dough will be sticky so do your best to evenly spread the dough in a thin layer.
  7. Use a spatula to spread the marshmallow creme on top of the dough. It is very sticky so just do your best to spread it in an even layer.
  8. Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the marshmallow creme in an even layer.
  9. Using the remaining cookie dough, mold it into flat pieces and layer on top of the chocolate chips. (There won’t be enough dough to cover the whole top in a single layer, some marshmallow and chocolate chips will be exposed.)
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and place the pan on a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Lift the bars out of the pan and cut into squares
  13. Cover and store the leftover bars at rooms for up to 1 week.
  14. Lastly, Enjoy!

Review:

The process of making the bars was very straightforward and the recipe was easy to follow. Once the dough was made the only part that was kind of hard was the assembly, only because of how sticky the dough and marshmallow creme was. I used my hands to spread out the dough, which made it easier to make sure it was spread evenly to each corner. Using a rubber spatula to spread out the marshmallow creme was a lot easier than anything else because it didn’t stick to it as much. I found that placing a few dollops of the creme on the dough before spreading it out made it much easier.

The hardest part of the whole process was waiting. The combination of the baking time and cooling time felt like forever and the smell of sweet graham cracker filled the air.

These cookie bars were so good! The inside of the cookie was soft from the marshmallow and the actual cookie itself, and the outside had the perfect amount of crunch. The sweetness from the marshmallow complemented the bitterness from the chocolate. I wasn’t sure how the marshmallow creme would bake, I didn’t know if it would get hard like other marshmallows when they are cooked for a while, but they were still soft.

These bars were so good, I made them a second time. They were the perfect way to end the night and my family loved them. I think that these would be perfect for a summer night and definitely are a better version of the classic s’more.

‘Andor’ season 2

By: Evie Beaumaster

The show ‘Andor’, is one of the many Star Wars shows that are available on Disney +. This show is a part of the ‘Rogue One’ storyline, and it follows Cassian Andor, one of the main ‘Rogue One’ characters. There are 12 episodes in season 2 that follow Andor on his adventures for the resistance.

This show was highly anticipated by many Star Wars fans, and it did not disappoint most people. On Rotten Tomatoes the show is rated at 97%. Critics say that this show continues the spark that we got from season one. It is praised for its story and acting and I would agree.

‘Andor’ takes place before the movie ‘Rogue One’ and follows the past of Cassian Andor before we see him in the movie. This season brings us closer to Andor and parts of the Star Wars universe that we haven’t seen before. In the first season we saw Andor become closer to the rebellion and become an important figure in the rebellion. We also see more development for characters from the original trilogy and ‘Rogue One’, such as Mon Mothma and Orson Krennic.

This show has very unique cinematography and there are many landscape shots that show us more of this unique world. We see some new planets in this show as well, which help expand the Star Wars universe for fans. The music and darker lighting help set a dark mysterious theme for this show which really carry on to the character’s reality because most are just fighting to survive.

From the great success of season 1 comes yet another show of ‘Andor’. Many thought that season 2 had large expectations to live up to and I think that this show did a pretty good job. The music, cinematography and lighting all remind us of season 1 and it helps build on season 1. I would personally recommend this show and I think it’s one of the best series that has come from the Disney takeover of Star Wars.

History of Minnesota State Fair

By Grace Wright

In 1854 the Minnesota Agricultural Society was founded and their goal was to help promote Minnesota agriculture. The first state fair was held in Minneapolis, 1858. For a while they didn’t have a set place; they would rotate from Red Wing, St. Paul, Rochester and a few more towns.  Between 1870-1880 they worked to have a permanent spot for the fair. They finally found a spot when Ramsey County donated a 210 acre plot of land. It has now grown into 322 acres of land.

During the early days of the fair it was mainly agricultural attractions and competitions. This followed the theme of which the state fair was started for. Now, while agriculture is still a big part of the fair, it has now changed, with more food and rides for people to enjoy.

In 1966 the Fairchild gopher became the new official mascot of the Minnesota State Fair. His name is from Henry S. Fairchild, the man who said the fair should be put on the Ramsey county plot.  His nephew, named Fairborn, later joined him in 1983.

The fair has been held almost every year since it was started but there has been a few years it hasn’t been. 1861-1862 because of the Civil War and the Dakota War, 1893 because of a conflict with an exposition show, 1945-1946 because of the U.S. restrictions with travel during World War II and also due to the polio epidemic. The most recent one was in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some popular buildings are the 4-H buildings, which is where many youth come to show animals. The cattle barn is where you can see many different kinds of cows, there are versions of these for many more animals. The DNR is a log cabin-like building which has held the DNR during the state fair since 1934. The food building is many people’s favorite building because it has many different food stalls. The most well known one is the grandstand. The grandstand has many different levels with food and shopping on the second and third floors and showing rooms on the bottom floor. It is also where many concerts are seen in the two weeks.

The state fair sees 2 million people a year and employs over 2,000 staff members during the summer. The livestock is a big part of the Minnesota Fair. It brings more than 8,000 competitors, 20,000 animals and prizes can add up to 1.6 million in total.

I have been going to the state fair for many years now and I have also worked at a booth during the two weeks that the state fair has been open. Some of my favorite parts are the food. I always get Sweet Martha’s, which are very famous chocolate chip cookies, I also always get the turkey leg and lemonade. I would recommend going to the state fair if you ever get a chance there is something for everyone there. It is open for the 2025 season, August 21-September 1.

The 10 minute art challenge

By: Maggie Hong

The 10 minute art challenge, popularized by the New York Times, asks you to spend 10 minutes with one painting, uninterrupted. Usually, people only look at paintings for a minute or so, if that. Even if you study a painting repeatedly, spending uninterrupted time with it gives you a whole new perspective. As you look at the painting for ten whole minutes, you will probably find your eyes drawn to details you didn’t see at first. You may also find you see the painting differently; with changing focal points, colors, and even movement within it. Spending this time with a piece of art not only helps you to learn about art and expand your attention span, but to relax and ground yourself.

I tried this challenge at a common starting point: ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent van Gogh. I love van Gogh’s style, and this painting has always been a favorite of mine.

When I started the challenge, I was a bit worried I’d get bored. My eyes didn’t really focus on a specific spot, instead they wandered around the canvas. But as I stuck with it, things started to jump out at me. I noticed the texture of the paint, and that colors I’d once thought were blues were actually shades of green and brown. I also felt my breathing slow down, and my body relax. Because I was focused on this one task, my mind had a clear directive: only think about this painting. It didn’t have time to wander to other worries or annoying thoughts, or even to get bored.

Overall, I think this is a great challenge for everyone to try. I was surprised by how calming and centering it was, and I noticed lots of new things about a great piece of art. You can try this with any piece, whether it has a lot of things to look at, like ‘The Starry Night’, or not very many. You can also adjust the timing; sit for only 5 minutes, or as long as you want. Find an art piece and give it a try!

Elephants

By: Maya Song

Image by Byrdyak via Wikimedia Commons

The elephant is one of the largest mammals on earth. Elephants live across Africa and Asia and are very popular sightseeing animals. There are approximately 415,000 elephants in Africa and 40,000-50,000 elephants left in Asia. It is estimated that there were once 20 million elephants in just Africa and an estimated number of 26 million on the whole earth. The elephant’s population is continuing to decline because of causes like habitat loss, and poaching, which is also known as illegal hunting.

The elephant’s habitat is very large, they can live in places like forests, savannas, deserts, wetlands and grasslands. Most elephants just need areas with a lot of space as they are very large. They also need their food and water; the elephant is a herbivore and eats food such as grass, bark, leaves, fruits, and roots. An elephant can feed for up to 12 hours and eats over 100 pounds of vegetation in just one day.

When the elephant is pregnant the baby elephant also known as a calf stays inside the mother for about 22 months which is one of the longest gestation cycles. After the calf is born its mother and other elephants in the herd will help the calf stand up as baby elephants are able to stand up a few minutes after birth. When the calf reaches the four month mark they start to eat things besides their mothers milk but will continue to drink its mothers milk for up to two years and can drink 3 gallons a day.

Elephants are social animals and will travel in herds. Most elephant herds are large families that include members over multiple generations; and usually they travel with these same herds for the entirety of their lives.

Elephants usually live around 60-70 years, they usually die because of starvation or a disease called anthrax. Annually there’s a range from 40,000 to 70,000 elephants dying.
