Top 5 animals to have as pets

If you plan on getting a pet, I think the following animals would make good pets.

Dog

Dogs are one of the most common pets to have. They’re known to be very loyal and smart. Dogs are also easier to train compared to certain other animals. Dogs can be brought into certain workplaces as long as they’re properly trained. Some of the most popular dog breeds include the Siberian Husky, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and a poodle.

Cat

Cats are the other most commonly owned pet. According to Helpguide.org, cats serve as a good outlet for fun and play. They can also be calming to be around. Cats are pretty affectionate and loving towards their owners and/or people they trust. 46.5 million households in the United States own cats. Cats that live indoors by their owners live longer than those that are allowed to wander outside. Keeping your cat inside protects them from dangers such as large birds and traffic.

Betta Fish

If you want to let your kid take care of a pet, Betta fish are an easy pet to take care of. They don’t need much attention other than feeding them and cleaning the bowl daily. They are very pretty and come in many different colors. According to Animals.howthingswork.com, putting two male betta fish together isn’t something you should do as they could end up fighting.

Rabbit

Rabbits are social animals and are smart enough to be trained how to use the litter box. Rabbits may enjoy playing with and sitting next to their owners, but they prefer not to be hugged or snuggled with. Some rabbit breeds include Polish rabbits, Netherland Dwarf rabbit, and the American Fuzzy Lop.

Hamster

Hamsters aren’t considered domestic animals like dogs, cats, rabbits, and Guinea pigs. Just keeping one hamster is fine because like the ones that still live out in nature, they are also solitary creatures.

After reading this article, I hope you’ve learned a bit more about which animals make good pets.

Most popular sports in America

By: Isabel Strack

The most popular men’s sport in America is football also known as the NFL. Almost 37% of Americans have said that football is their favorite to play, or enjoy watching. The NFL also has the highest number of people who show up to their games, which is 67,591. This league has 32 different football teams.

The season starts in September and ends in December, with every team playing 16 games. As the best teams advance we go into playoffs, which lead into the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is the biggest annual sporting event in the country.

The NFL also gets the highest TV ratings as it is on every Sunday during football season. In 2014, a record of 167 million people watched Super Bowl Sunday.

The most popular sports for women in America are women’s basketball and women’s soccer. Both of these sports are big options for many girls in high school and college.

Women’s college basketball has a world wide fan base of almost 50 million. The women’s basketball TV rate has 56% of viewers tuning in to watch. The WNBA popularity is due to the first pro year of college students like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink who all brought attention to college women’s basketball during the previous year’s NCAA tournament (NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association). They set new scores during this tournament and also set new records for scoring and viewership during their undergraduate careers. As these women athletes were recently drafted into the WNBA many of their fans followed them. Their fans boosted ticket and merchandise sales, and TV ratings. The Olympic events are also very popular with 35% of viewers tuning in.

In college, women’s soccer is also a popular choice. In 2023, soccer was one of the most popular women’s sports to watch on TV. They have 74% of viewing hours. The national women’s soccer league has a fan base of almost 36 million people.

Fast food secret menus

By: Ian Larson

Many fast food restaurants have secret menus available only to the people who know about them. Just ask for any of these items and you’ll probably be able to get them.

First are the secret items at McDonalds. McDonald’s has many secret menu items that are available at most locations. One of these items is the apple pie McFlurry, which is a McDonald’s apple pie blended into a McFlurry. There’s also the grilled cheese which is just 2 of their burger buns with cheese in the middle. Another item is the Big McChicken, which is a Big Mac, but instead of buns it has McChicken patties. McDonald’s actually has many more secret menu items, but I thought these were the most interesting of them.

Another fast food restaurant that has a secret menu is Burger King. You can actually order a BK ham and cheese sandwich on a sesame seed bun. You can also order another classic type of sandwich by getting the BK BLT , which is BLT toppings on a Whopper. Can’t decide between fries and onion rings? You can order “Frings”, half fries, half rings.

Five Guys also has their own secret menu. One option is the cheesy fries which are just Five Guys fries with cheese melted on top. Another cheesy item is the patty melt with buns grilled just like a grilled cheese sandwich. If you want some fries that are unique but don’t want the cheesy fries, you can order the well done fries that were fried longer and are more crispy.

While there are many other fast food restaurants that have their own secret menus, the last one that will be shown here is Chick-fil-A. One of the Chick-fil-A items is the buffalo chicken sandwich where buffalo sauce is added to their spicy chicken sandwich. A drink you can order is the root beer float. The last item you can get is the chicken quesadilla. The chicken quesadilla is chicken and cheese in a tortilla.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

By: Charlotte Bistodeau

Artist Statement:

I drew this for my art class. We were making patterns and got to choose whatever we wanted to go into the pattern. I chose Alice which was also the base choice. I chose Alice because I love the elegance of the Victorian era mixed with the craziness of dreams that get mixed together in the book.

I don’t usually do the line art on my drawings so having one of our tasks in the art project be the line art was a good thing. If it wasn’t a task I never would have done it.

One thing I’m not as proud of is that some of the tiles behind Alice have random lines because I wasn’t paying attention. Everything else about the drawing I enjoyed though, especially the shading. Well, not really doing the shading but I like how it turned out.

In the end I’m glad this was what I had to do for my art class because it actually got me to sit down and think about what I had to draw.

France searches for a new president

The French president, Emmanuel Macron is coming near the end of his second term, as he was re-elected in 2022 and will remain president until 2027. French presidents only serve two terms, as there is a limit. There is mounting pressure on Macron to name a new prime minister and diffuse the ongoing political crisis. Apple News reported that “The president called for ‘a meeting of different political forces’ to discuss forming a new government after the collapse of the last minority administration” according to the Greens after meeting Macron.

Some backstory to this is that no single party gained an absolute majority in the Assembly following the 2022 elections. Despite gaining the most seats, Macron’s Ensemble! Coalition was unable to win a majority.

Significant gains were made in the elections by the right-wing group National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, and the left-wing alliance Nupes, which consists of the Socialist group, Communist Party, France Insoumise, and the Green Party of France. In other words, Macron was now in charge of a minority administration, putting his government in a scenario known as a “cohabition” in French politics, where the president and prime minister are from different parties.

Macron’s failure to obtain a majority resulted in ongoing deadlock and made it impossible to pass important laws. This meant that in order to pass legislation, Macron and his prime minister, Michel Barnier, had to approach the opposition one at a time for support. This is extremely difficult in the current political climate.

Political unrest has resulted from Macron’s legislation majority’s collapse, with demonstrations and discontent mounting over the government’s failure to enact important reforms, particularly on matters like labor laws and pensions.

As a result, Macron’s political standing deteriorated, and the opposition-controlled National Assembly made it extremely hard for him to carry out any of his plans. Parliamentary speaker Yael Braun-Pivet urged the president’s centrist campe to join forces with the Republicans, independent MPs and the Socialists to have a majority, so there is no longer a possibility of censure, (which is a formal vote of disapproval against a government official).

Local bands: Rock Melon

By: Persephone Pond

Rock Melon is a local band based in Highland Park, Saint Paul. This surf-pop-indie band consists of six talented students from around the Highland Park area. This article will go over a few need-to-know facts about the band before listening to their music.

Before going over the music the band has released as of late, it’s important to know the talent behind music. Here’s a quick introduction to the band.

Zack Nelson (he/him) is a senior at HPSH and the founder of the band. He plays both the guitar and bass. Elzie Bieganek (she/her) is one of the two talented vocalists of Rock Melon, currently attending SPA as a junior. Erin Moore (she/her) is a junior at HPSH, and the second vocalist of Rock Melon. Ryan Mitchell (he/him) and Izzy Montgomery (she/her) both play guitar, and Syan Blackwood (they/them) plays the drums for the band.

Now, the music itself this small band produces showcases a wide range of talent in terms of instrumentals, vocals, and production. All music is recorded by the band, and released on all streaming platforms.

Their latest releases include three singles from their upcoming album. The three tracks are “First Love’s Name”, “Eucalyptus”, and “The Architect”. All of these songs were written by the band members, and feature riveting vocals and soothing instrumentals.

The band plays live music around the Saint Paul/Minneapolis area, so keep an eye out for their next gig. Small venues around the metro area often support other small local bands as well. Attending live concerts is an easy, low commitment way to support these young artists.

To support this growing band, give them a follow on Instagram @rockmelonband. Stream their music on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube music, and more!

Tara Dower

By: Kara Fini

Appalachian Trail sign

A record previously only held by men was broken last year by a woman.  In September of 2024, Tara Dower ran the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in under 41 days beating the previous record held by Karel Sabbe, a male ultrarunner, by a whole 13 hours.

Tara is a 31-year-old ultra runner from Virginia. She’s run thousands of miles in her life and attempted to hike the Appalachian Trail twice. Her first time in 2017 she didn’t make it due to anxiety, but two years later she completed it with her husband. This time she wanted to make history.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Appalachian Trail, it’s a long hiking trail that spans from Georgia all the way to Maine going through the Appalachian Mountains. This trail is 2,190+ miles long and is open to the public. There are many parts of the trail for doing shorter hikes. The total amount of elevation gain for the entire trail is 520,000 ft with the highest elevation being 6,643 ft.

Annually, about 3,000 people attempt to complete this 2,000 mile journey, but only about 25% of people complete it. For the average hiker, it takes 5 to 7 months to complete with several stops along the way.

With all of that in mind, it puts into perspective how crazy and amazing it is for Tara to run this in only 41 days. Tara was running the equivalent of two marathons every day across the mountains. She had different pacers, people who ran with her to make sure she was going the right speed, throughout the whole time who helped her stay encouraged and motivated. She completed it at 11:53 at night on September 21.

This moment is powerful for women and girls in sports, especially running. In most things related to endurance sports, men have the fastest time. Seeing a woman not only beat the women’s fastest known time, but the overall known time shows how capable and strong women in sports can be.

If you want to see more of Tara’s running journey, she has a TikTok and Instagram that you can follow. Her username for both is @tara.dower.
