Restaurants are closing and they aren’t coming back

By : Jalalaisa Geleto

The lockdown that started in March has caused hundreds of thousands of businesses to close down, but the restaurant industry has been hit the hardest.

The reason restaurants have been suffering more than any other business is because of the small margin of profit they make. According to ‘Restaurants 365′ the average margin of profit a restaurant makes is 3 – 5 %. For bigger chains like Mcdonalds it’s around 10%.

During the first few months of lockdown restaurants were completely closed meaning they had to sustain workers, supplies, and a building, while making no money to pay them at all. Because restaurants tend to make smaller profits there was only so much money the owners could save up to pay all their future bills.

Restaurants couldn’t pay up because restaurants’ financial model isn’t effective at all without customers for a long period of time.

16,000 restaurants have been permanently closed since the beginning of the lockdown, that’s 60% of all restaurants that closed form the pandemic according to ABC News. The restaurant industry is not going to recover from this for a very long time.

Now that the lockdown has loosen up, restaurants are now allowed to open up but only under strict guidelines. This helps the surviving restaurants very little because they have to spend extra money (which they probably don’t have) on the safety guidelines that their state demands, and serve less than half of the customers they would usually get before the pandemic.

This will lead to restaurants laying off workers because they support their full work force when they already have to pay for equipment to reach their states safety guidelines and their customers being cut in half. As I stated before, restaurants have a very small margin of profit therefore they are going to sacrifice a lot of things to even get there again.

ABC News reports that around 40% of the surviving restaurants believe they will make a full recovery with government assistance by the end of the year. Only 6,400 of the over 26,000 restaurants closing this year plan on making a full recovery this year.

Many business owners want the safety guidelines to go away so they can go back to when things were normal, but state governments have ignored their cries.

More restaurants might close in the future but they have definitely slowed down for now.

Things might start to fully open up again and the state mandated guidelines might go away allowing restaurants to go back to their old ways and hire more waiters and cooks. Only time will tell.

Biden and Trump second debate cancelled

Everyone can agree that the first presidential debate was a disaster. The moderator Chris Wallace spent half of the 90-minute begging president Trump to stop interrupting him and also to stop talking over his opponent Joe Biden and reminding him that he agreed to have answered the questions he was asked in two minutes.

After that disaster of a debate, the group that manages the debate put some new rules in order. Each candidate will be muted at the start of the debate, the candidates will have two minutes to answer the question they were asked, and during that two minutes the opposing candidate will be muted. After both Candidates have had their two minutes, both microphones will be muted so no one can interrupt the moderator while he or she asked the next questions.

With these new rules in place for the second presidential debate, the debate however was canceled. The debate was to take place in Miami, with both candidates taking questions from the audience

On October 2, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for Covid-19, putting the nation’s leadership into uncertainty.

The President, who down played the virus for months, said in a statement, “The end of the pandemic is in sight, we will quarantine in the White House for an unspecified period.”

Due to his illness, the debate was canceled. The next best thing to do was to hold a virtual debate but the President refused, saying in a interview with Fox News “I am not going to waste my time doing a virtual debate, sitting behind a computer, ridiculous,” calling it a joke.

The Biden team then proposed to continue with the October, 22 debate in Miami. The Trump team agreed, but hours later Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien then proposed to have another another debate on October 29, just five days before the election on November 3. The Biden team rejected that offer and said, ”Donald Trump doesn’t make the debate schedule; the Debate Commission does.”

Since the debate was canceled, Biden decided to hold his own primetime event on ABC answering questions from voters, and the President decided to hold a campaign rally.

‘Day of the Dead’: A Halloween classic

By: Hayden Fitzsimons

George Romero is likely a name that goes over the heads of many, however his affect on film and pop culture is immeasurable.

George Romero is one of the main reasons zombies have become as popular as they are today. Prior to Romero, very few pieces of media involving zombies existed. There were enough to inspire Romero, films such as ‘The White Zombie’ were a main influence to the creation of Romero’s first film ‘Night of the Living Dead,’ which was released in 1968. His film was unlike any other film before it, as his film contained extreme gore and a focus on the living dead, believe it or not.

17 years later, George Romero releases another zombie film, the staple of his filmmaking career. This film is ‘Day of the Dead,’ one of his lesser known and lesser appreciated films. Even so, many of Romero’s fans claim ‘Day of the Dead’ as their favorite Romero film. Personally, ‘Day of the Dead’ is the only film I’ve seen of his, however I’m greatly looking forward to seeing more as this film is quite entertaining.

‘Day of the Dead’ is, to put it simply, an entertaining yet extremely corny movie. This is a common thread in Romero’s films, as they are all low budget and kitschy films. Even despite the film’s corniness it remains a very entertaining film.

Yet, the first act of the film is a major issue in my opinion. I found the first 20 to 30 minutes extremely boring and borderline irritating. This issue is one that plagues many older films, but that doesn’t excuse ‘Day of the Dead.’

But, if you make it through the first act, which I highly recommend that you do, the film quickly picks up. The story which takes place is that of Dr. Sarah Bowman and a whole cast of characters ranging from soldiers to nearly insane scientists, trapped in an underground facility. They’ve been assigned the task of learning about the zombies which have ravaged America, but the soldiers are quickly becoming irritated with losing their men and resources to protect a collection of nerds who seem to be making very little progress.

The issues and strengths of ‘Day of the Dead’ both derive from the characters. In the beginning of the film, many of the characters are nearly perfect cliches. The characters start as extremely one dimensional, irritating, and poorly acted. This makes the film become somewhat of a slog, a painful crawl until the film very quickly improves.

Once an actual threat and conflict arises, the characters who were once cliches have become endearing to the viewer and are now a set of fun characters who the viewer is rooting wholeheartedly for. After the film overcomes their initially poorly written characters, it becomes an action packed thrill ride that is non-stop entertainment.

This year will be the 37th anniversary of Wrestlemania you do not want to miss this‼ ‼ ‼ ‼

By: Khadar Greer

Wrestlemania 37 will be taking place at the new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on March 28th, 2021. This page will be your main hub for our Wrestlemania 37 predictions. This mostly could possibly have matches that we think could take place at the event.

Drew McIntyre is in the middle of the most aggressive push he’s received in his WWE career at the moment, and deservedly so. He has spent over a decade scratching and clawing his way to the top of the card, and he was finally rewarded for his efforts in the form of a Royal Rumble victory in January. Of course, his future as a main event-caliber competitor was started after beating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 36. The hope from there is that he’ll be able to maintain momentum and have a successful title reign. Regardless of whether he loses the belt before WrestleMania 37 or not, he should walk into next year’s spring spectacle as the WWE Champion.

There aren’t many men from the ‘SmackDown’ and ‘Raw’ rosters who’d make sense to face him for the championship, but ‘NXT’s’, Adam Cole, should be considered a strong candidate. It’s all but a guarantee that Cole and the rest of Undisputed Era will be a part of the main roster by the close of 2020. They have accomplished everything imaginable in ‘NXT’ and have been ready to move to ‘Raw’ or ‘SmackDown’ for awhile now.

There’s still time for this WrestleMania match to happen in Tampa, Florida, on April 5, but based off how John Cena has been advertised as returning to ‘SmackDown’ on February 28, and Velveteen Dream recently returned to ‘NXT,’ the chances of it coming to fruition any time soon are slim to none.

According to WrestleVotes, Cena has creative freedom to face who he wants at WrestleMania this year, making it all the more mind-boggling that Elias has recently been rumored to be his opponent at the event. Granted, they’ve interacted on ‘The Grandest Stage of Them All’ for the past two years, but the musician is the wrong person to be elevated by working with him. For what it’s worth, Cena went on the record, two years ago at an Orlando convention, to say he would rather have a match with Velveteen Dream over Adam Cole and Ricochet because of how unique of a character he is.

Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey was easily one of WWE’s hottest feuds in 2019, but it can be argued that it wasn’t blown off the right way at WrestleMania 35.

Of course, fans got what they wanted with Lynch pinning Rousey in the main event and reigning supreme as the new ‘Raw’ and ‘SmackDown’ women’s champion, but the finish of the match felt botched and abrupt.

In other words, “The Man” did not decisively defeat “The Baddest Woman on the Planet” as it looked like Rousey’s shoulders weren’t completely pinned down to the mat. Rousey returning to reclaim what she believes she shouldn’t have lost is a natural story to tell. It would have been the perfect WrestleMania match this year, but it’s clear WWE is headed in a different direction with Lynch and ‘NXT’ upstart Shayna Baszler. Anything can happen with the ‘Raw’ women’s division between now and WrestleMania 37, though. Lynch could well lose her spot as the red brand’s top dog, but if she can remain relevant, a rematch with Rousey will be the way to go.

The history of the Ford Motor Company

By: Caden Ligman

The Ford Motor company is one of the biggest and most well known car manufacturers in history. Since being founded in 1903 by Henry Ford, the company has only grown in popularity. Today, the FMC is the top selling car manufacturer in the US.

In 1896, before the company was founded, Henry Ford had already started developing Ford cars. The first Ford car to be manufactured and sold to the public was the Model T. The Model T was revolutionary for the car industry’s time.

The car was in such high demand that the company was forced to build a mass production plant in Kansas City, Missouri in 1911. As the popularity of the car continued to grow, another mass production plant was built in Manchester, England to keep up with international demand.

As the company grew, Henry Ford developed the assembly line. This method of assembling cars significantly cut down on the amount of time it took to assemble Ford cars, allowing the company to sell many more cars. Because Ford was selling so many cars so quickly, Henry Ford was able to pay his factory worker a $5 daily wage, almost double the previous wage rates. This only made the company more popular, especially among middle and lower class families.

Ford kept expanding, and in 1927, they started manufacturing the Model A, which replaced the Model T.

In 1932, Ford introduced the first Ford V-8. Not only was it for diversifying their product, but they were also making big moves elsewhere in the auto industry.

Ford bought The Lincoln Motor Company In 1922. Lincoln produced Ford’s luxury cars, which still sell today. In addition, Ford started selling Mercury cars which were medium priced and targeted at the middle class.

Overall, the Ford Motor company revolutionized the auto industry and made cars accessible and affordable for the middle and lower class. Ford is still a major car manufacturer and is the highest selling car company in America.

Depletion in ozone layers

By: Olivia Kendle

Ozone layers are found in the stratosphere in the atmosphere. The layers absorb ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is harmful to living organisms. The UV rays can cause health problems from eye damage to skin cancer.

Though the depletion of ozone layers does not play a role in global warming, it is dangerous for us if the ozone layers cannot shield us from this UV radiation or other dangerous rays emitted from the sun.

Depletion of the ozone layers is caused by the pollutants that humans have been putting in the atmosphere. These pollutants are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons. The ozone hole, located in the upper stratosphere, shadows over the polar regions. Every living being below the hole, on Earth, is being affected by the radiation coming through the hole and touching Earth’s surface.

In 1987, scientists organized a program called the Montreal Protocol which was designed to phase out the depleting chemicals and reduce their concentration in the atmosphere. The Montreal Protocol has been successful and the whole project will be completed in around 2030.

Global warming is also causing depletion of the ozone layers. The warming in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) leads to cooling in the upper atmosphere (stratosphere). Warming in the lower atmosphere is mostly caused by greenhouse gases. Because Earth’s heat would usually pass through the troposphere and the stratosphere and eventually travel out of the atmosphere but is now being trapped in the stratosphere.

The heating in the lower atmosphere and the cooling in the upper atmosphere also explains the blanket analogy. The ‘blanket’ that covers Earth’s surface warms up as the Earth warms up with it. The heat gets trapped in the atmosphere or under the ‘blanket’ and no heat gets to the upper atmosphere while it is all in the lower atmosphere. The cooling in the upper stratosphere causes even more loss of ozone depletion.

Overall, the heating of the Earth (global warming) is affecting and changing the ozone layers or the ‘ozone hole’. More UV radiation rays and other dangerous rays are starting to come through the ozone layers but fortunately, the Montreal Protocol is helping prevent that.

How is the NFL still making money with no fans?

By: Jimmy Somerville

As you may know, the NFL season is back and in action even with the coronavirus. But there is a catch – there are either no fans allowed or very few allowed.

And the NFL is a business at the end of the day, whether you think of it as a business or not, so their goal is to make a profit (money).

So, since they aren’t allowed to have fans, or some teams will allow a maximum of ten thousands fans, where the average NFL stadium can fill up around 70,000 fans, how is the NFL still going to make money, and are they going to be in financial trouble?

The answer is the NFL would lose around 15.47% of their profit if they did not allow one single fan to buy a ticket. Because, in 2018, the NFL made up 15.47% of their profit by selling tickets. So, assuming the 2020 data would be similar to the 2018 data, the NFL would lose around 15% of their profit.

Now, 30 years ago, ticket sales would probably make up around 50% of the NFL’s profit because now, there is more advanced technology where the NFL can sell jerseys and other fan apparel online.

Losing 15% of profit can hurt, but the NFL made 15 billion dollars in 2019, so they will be just fine, and remember, they can still bring in some fans, so they will probably lose around 12% of profit, which is more than noticeable, but won’t hurt them too badly in the long run.

So, to answer my final question, the NFL will still make around roughly 88% of the profit they would’ve made without the coronavirus, this season, by having their games televised with expensive TV deals. And, like I said earlier, they also make money by selling jerseys and other fan apparel. In 2015 the NFL made more than 50% revenue from just TV deals. So the NFL will be fine.

Portrayal of women in media and its effects

By: Elizabeth Woxland

The media can have a very persuasive and powerful influence on how people view certain things/topics. The topic of the media’s portrayal of women, and the double standard between men and women, is a major theme in the media.

Not only is the portrayal of women stereotypical, but it influences others into believing these stereotypes. There is a huge gender-imbalance in the media where women are far less likely to appear than men and are often viewed differently in comparison to their male colleagues.

The media misrepresents the actual proportions of successful men and successful women in the population. An example of this would be the lack of recognition for female directors. Successful female directors, such as Greta Gerwig, who directed the successful movies ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘Little Women’, has yet to win any awards for directing either of those films. This is despite both of the films having more popularity than the other films they went up against for awards.

The underrepresentation of women leads to harmful stereotypes between men and women. Not only is there a lack of women in media, but the media also perceives women in a very different light than men. A specific example of this would be the double standard for men and women writing songs about love.

When looking at singer/songwriters Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeren, both have very similar careers. Taylor Swift, like many other female singer/songwriters, is judged for using her relationships as inspiration for her songs. While in comparison, male artists like Ed Sheeren, are praised for opening up and using their love life as inspiration. One is praised and the other is criticized.

The double standard, and lack of women in media, is harmful and affects how girls/women perceive themselves and how men perceive women. Although there has been growth in the percentage of women in media, in recent years, the media still struggles to equally represent and portray both men and women.

The most influential horror movies

By: Teah Henry

It’s October! This is the month of Halloween, which means candy, spooky decorations, and of course horror movies. Many people spend this month watching scary films, and if you were looking for any suggestions then you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll be looking at some of the most influential horror films that have ever been made. Let’s start with:

‘Psycho’ (dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1960)

Psycho’ is one of the most well known movies; even if you haven’t seen it, you’ve surely seen references, heard the score, or at least seen the famous shower scene. There’s also the well known prequel series, ‘Bates Motel’.

At its release, it shocked most American audiences. Alfred Hitchcock had trouble with funding due to the horrific nature of the film, and had to put his own money into the making of it. It was filmed and released during the “Hays Code Era of Hollywood”. The code prohibited many things from being in movies. Only “correct standards of life” could be shown in a movie, and things like crime could not be shown unless the criminal was punished. This meant many movies did not show anything like the terror in ‘Psycho’, and Hitchcock’s clever avoidance of the censors and masterful filmmaking helped create one of the most well known horror films of all time.

It was also the first Hollywood film to show a toilet on screen!

‘The Exorcist’ (dir. William Friedkin, 1973)

‘The Exorcist’ did not have a good start. Many major stars turned down the request to be in it, sets had burned down, and it had to double the budget to finish filming. Not only that, but it had gotten mixed reviews from critics when it finally released.

Despite its problems, audiences loved it. Long lines formed to buy tickets, people waited outside in the cold to see it, and it gained notoriety for being absolutely horrifying. Many people fainted, threw up, and there were even heart attacks. Ozzy Osbourne said the movie inspired him and Black Sabbath to write even scarier music.

It was the highest grossing horror movie until ‘It: Chapter One’s’ release in 2017. ‘The Exorcist’ was also the first horror movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. It’s a movie that everyone remembers after viewing, and it’s influence on horror and our culture is undeniable.

‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ (dir. Tobe Hooper, 1974)

Similar to ‘The Exorcist’, ‘Texas Chainsaw’ caused a huge reaction among audiences. The violence in the film stirred a controversy. Many theaters refused to show it, and Hooper had trouble even finding a studio to distribute the movie.

It did make a lot of money however, and helped boost common horror tropes to the mainstream. It used the “based on the true story” tactic that is seen often now (such as in ‘The Conjuring’ franchise). Even though it is not really based on real events, it is loosely inspired by serial killer Ed Gein.

‘Texas Chainsaw’ is cited as the movie starting many slasher movie tropes, and it is safe to say that the genre would not be the same if this film had not been released.

Those are some of the most influential horror movies ever made, and if you’re looking for a spooky movie to watch this season, it wouldn’t hurt to check any of these three movies out.

COVID-19 and how different countries are handling the it

By: Aisha Dirie

Many countries are handling this pandemic differently. Many countries are still in lockdown, have certain restrictions, or restrict all travel from or to countries.

The US is still battling this pandemic. Many states still have COVID cases rising.

This pandemic has affected the economy in many different countries.

How different countries are handling this pandemic shows a lot about their leaders, how quickly this virus has spread, and how dangerous COVID-19 truly is. According to Worldometers.info, there are currently around 37 million cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with the US at the largest number of cases. Following the US is India with the second most cases worldwide.

According to EndCoronavirus.org, some of the countries that are recovering, or have recovered completely from COVID, are New Zealand, Sudan, and Haiti.

In late March, New Zealand put in a very strict quarantine. This led the country COVID cases to decrease exponentially. This was a good move for the prime minister of New Zealand (Jacinda Ardern) because currently there are only a couple, or almost zero, COVID-19 cases in the country of New Zealand.

Other countries that have gone into strict lockdown have been managing their COVID-19 cases as well.

Many different countries are handling this pandemic differently. On different scales, levels, seriousness, and population. There is definitely a trend between what countries are doing better than others. Some countries are back to normal life already.

This is different than some countries, including the US, Canada, etc. We are already far enough into this pandemic to recognize why certain countries have failed to reopen.

Time will tell.
