Spider-Man has left the MCU

The Web-Head is out of the Marvel Universe

Ah, Spiderman. He first became a hit in the public eye in the 2002 movie Spider-Man, starring Toby Maguire, and the movie was so popular it got two sequels, in 2004 and 2007 respectively.

Last month, Sony Pictures, the studio that has the film rights to the Spider-Man movie franchise, declared that they were no longer allowing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since 2016, Sony had let the Tom Holland Spider-Man appear in five movies of the MCU, appearing alongside other characters owned by Disney, such as Iron Man and Captain America. But now that he’s gone, how will the MCU go on without him, and what does Sony plan to do with the Tom Holland character?

In my opinion, this is a good time for this to happen, if there ever is a good time for a beloved character to leave a film franchise. Sony Pictures has proved themselves more than capable of creating a wonderful Spider-Man movie, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse being the perfect example.

One of the problems that people often bring up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that the focus of a broader world makes the audience more interested in how the story will play out in the long run rather than how good the film actually was. For an example of this, Black Panther, another MCU film, had almost no other characters from the MCU except in the end credits scene. Black Panther was an insanely popular movie, making $1.3 Billion dollars and currently has a 92% liked it score on Metacritic.

Reusable items

There has been talk of the Earth dying for some time now. To try and stop this many people have decided that they want to spread the idea of a more sustainable living.

One easy and effective way to do this is by switching to reusable products. This helps reduce trash and saves your household tons of money. Imagine not needing to buy plastic baggies for lunch or sponges for dish cleaning again. Continue reading for some reusable item examples.

Refillable Lotion/Soap Bottles:

There are tons of different refillable lotion brands to choose from. What to do is you order your lotion from where you want, for example, like the company Plaine Products, and when it’s empty or almost empty you send the bottle back. The company then fills it back up for you. You can do the same thing for hand soap. This helps reduce all the plastic being used to make the lotion and soap bottles you buy only to than throw away.

Reusable Silicone Food Baggies:

Silicone food bags get you to save so much money. Instead of throwing away every plastic storage bag you use, you can buy multiple and use them over and over again. There are many different easy cleaning methods for them that take only a few quick minutes. These bags are durable, and so much more ocean friendly than plastic bags.

Dishwashing Brush:

Forget about small sponges, purchase a reusable dishwashing brush instead. They are soft enough to clean delicate cups and plates but tough enough to get hard to clean pots and pans as well. A plus about these is that the tool comes with a handy wooden handle. These brushes last much longer than sponges do. They are much more reliable and they help reduce trash.

Silicone Baking Cups:

These baking cups are a good alternative to paper or aluminum cups. They can be easily washed in the dishwasher or even by hand. You can place them anywhere from the microwave to the freezer. A benefit of using these is you wouldn’t need a muffin tin to help bake. They are durable, affordable, and easy to store. And of course they are better for the earth.

Amazon Rainforest fire

The Amazon Rainforest has a big impact on the world that we live in today because of the trees and oxygen that it supplies. Tropical forests give a huge amount of water and energy into the earth..Water and energy controls one’s local climate and because of that, tropical forests like the Amazon Rainforest are a big deal.

The Amazon Rainforest provides a lot of greens, and stabilizes the plants and wildlife. There are a lot of different species of animal that live in the Amazon Rainforest. One of the animals inhabiting the Amazon Rainforest is a piranha. The piranha is the most dangerous aquatic inhabitant of the Amazon River. The piranha has a strong jaw and razor sharp teeth.

Despite the excessive and huge fires in the Amazon Rainforest, that’s currently happening, it’s not the worst year the forest has seen. Years in the 2000s such as 2005, experienced over 142,000 fires within a time span of 8 months.

The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has received a lot of criticism for doing many things involving his lack of care and concern for the fires including rejecting $20 million in foreign aid to help fight the fires. Jair Bolsonaro has also talked about his support of deforestation. His comments and actions have caused people like one tribal chief, of a indigenous group in Brazil, to call his actions as a form a genocide.

The fires that are still going in are burning down more than just trees but also homes and millions of species that live in this area. According to the European Space Agency, the fires burning currently can be seen from space, and since the fires are so widespread it looks like clouds.

Freshmen!!

On August 29th, 2019 people flooded into the Highland High School building where freshman orientation occurred. It was fabulous! Kudos to all the upperclassmen and teachers who were welcoming and super helpful for us awkward freshmen. If you weren’t there you missed out. But don’t worry, I’ll fill you in.

As freshmen arrived we were cheered on and welcomed (loudly). Even though we won’t admit it, it was nice. Everyone got a name tag and sat on the bleachers to be introduced to certain teachers and staff. There were fun and empowering games to get to know other people in our grade and make new friends.

After our time in the gym we went to meet our Link Crew. We got to know everyone in our group and we got to play even more games. We found out information about clubs and our teachers. Our locker numbers and combos were given to us along with our schedules. Afterwards there was a grand tour! We got to find all of our classes and say “hi” to other Link Crews!

In the first week of school, the freshmen had a meeting with a few counselors, the principal, vice principal, and our school officer. They spoke to us about grades and being responsible with devices and such.

On September 6th, all the freshmen reported to the cafeteria during 7th hour to get our Link Crew together! After everyone was outside sitting in our individual sections Snack Attack! began. There were loads of games and activities that we played and at the end we won one pack of cookies! Each team had one of the Link Crew leaders run up and pick a pack of cookies for each team to share. They were delicious!!

Now you’re all caught up with the beginning of the year for freshmen! So far so good, right?

4 ways to support Hurricane Dorian victims

As you all may know, Hurricane Dorian has severely affected the lives of those living in the Bahamas. You may be seeing it all over the news, and you may be wondering ”Is there anything I, a high school student in Minnesota, can do to help those in the Bahamas who have been struck by this tragedy?” Well, there are some ways you can help. Here are 4 ways you can support the victims of Hurricane Dorian.

The first and most effective way to help is to donate money to a variety of organizations that help hurricane relief. Several organizations are already working in the Bahamas. A couple organizations include: The Red Cross and Global Giving.

2. Donate Clothes

Donating Clothes is definitely a great way to help provide citizens with proper, wearable clothes. You can donate clothes to the Bahamas Red Cross and they will see to it that they get in the hands of those who need it most.

3. Provide Supplies and Resources

If you’re short on money, or can’t give out any clothes, you can also give resources and supplies to organizations that help relief from Hurricane Dorian. Miami-Dade county is collecting supplies to help Hurricane survivors, and are accepting a wide variety of donations, including tents, cots, hygiene kits, purified water, portable generators and more.

4. Give Canned Food

Non-perishable food products are definitely needed in the Bahamas as a solution to feed those who have been driven out of their homes without resources, and are living in temporary spaces. You can donate canned goods to: World Central Kitchen.

Every little donation helps, no matter where in the world you are. Together, we can support those less fortunate than us by giving whatever we can to help hurricane victims. No matter how little you give, it’s up to us to respond to the needs of Dorian victims.
