The US Open is renowned as one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. Over the course of the year there are four Grand Slam tournaments, each played on a different surface: the French Open on clay, Wimbledon on grass, and the Australian and US Opens on hard courts. These events have some of the highest prize money in sports, boasting over 50-100 million per event.
The US Open lasts around two weeks, beginning on August 24th and ending on September 7th. Every year 128 players compete in the US Open for both men’s and women’s singles. These tournaments each have extensive legacies dating back over a century. The US Open is the final of the Grand Slam events each year and is the last major tournament until the Australian Open in January.
Before the tournament had even begun, two favorites had emerged. Carlos Alcaraz, a Spanish player who previously won the US Open in 2022 and has a total of 6 Grand Slam titles. Alcaraz would be competing against another favorite, Jannik Sinner, an Italian player who won the US Open in 2024 and has a total of 4 Grand Slam titles.
Alcaraz and Sinner collectively have won every Grand Slam title in the last 2 years, 2024-2025. Many other famous players took part in the US Open as well, including Novak Djokovic, one of the most dominant players in tennis history, having won 24 Grand Slam Titles.
Sinner and Alcaraz were placed on opposite sides of the bracket, meaning they wouldn’t meet until the finals. They both had several close matches. Alcaraz faced Djokovic during the quarterfinals in a grueling match that lasted over 2 hours. Eventually Alcaraz was able to narrowly defeat Djokovic, not only cementing his position in the finals, but also proving that he was one of the greatest players in the sport.
Alcaraz’s momentum only continued to increase throughout the competition. By the time he entered the finals, it was clear that he had control of the match. In the end, Carlos Alcaraz was able to edge out his rival Sinner, and won the 2025 US Open Grand Slam title.
