End of school year look into Highland Park’s spring sports
By: Abby Altman
Highland Park has been a powerhouse in many sports over the last few years, most notably Cross Country running and Nordic skiing. So what happens in the spring, when Highland no longer represents a powerhouse endurance sport?
Spring sports at Highland Park Senior High have not historically compared to that of fall and winter sports, both in success, and in spectator turnout.
Baseball and softball games don’t attract nearly as many viewers and support as football and basketball, and most people don’t even know that Highand has a combined ultimate frisbee team with Central High School.
However, each of the spring sports at Highland have achieved some level of success and each team deserves to be recognized.
Softball:
The Highland Park softball team has been short in numbers ever since the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time since 2019, Highland was able to fill a JV roster this spring, and utilized an abundance of underclassmen to fill out the Varsity roster.
The softball team went 8-0 in conference play, outscoring conference opponents 132-10 en route to their sixth conference title in team history. The team then went on to beat Minneapolis Southwest 16-6 to earn the first Twin Cities championship title in team history.
Baseball:
Similar to softball, the Highland Park baseball team went 8-0 in conference play, and 14-3 overall. The baseball team started the season extremely hot, going 14-0 to open the season, before dropping the last 3 games of the regular season.
Baseball and softball both went 0-2 in section play to end their seasons.
Badminton:
The Highland girls badminton team went 9-3 in conference play, and 17-3 overall on the season. Highland finished the season ranked 4th in team state.
At the individual state meet, Sunny Vang placed 1st overall in the singles varsity matches, and Houahna Yang placed 2nd overall in the singles JV matches. Edi Damiyo and Sara Leticho placed 3rd overall in the JV doubles matches.
Track:
The track team had a relatively bumpy start to the season, with many distance runners continuing their Nordic ski season, and several top athletes out with injury. Despite these setbacks, both the boys and girls teams won the team conference meet, with every single relay team taking 1st or 2nd place, and 12 overall event wins.
The team is now in the middle of their section championships, with Gavin Roberts and Terez Vaughn going to state in the 3200 and triple jump respectively. The finals for the section meet will be held on Friday, June 2, with 7 athletes qualifying for finals in various events.
Girls Golf:
The girls golf team had a record breaking number of participants this year. The golf team went 5-0 in conference, and won the conference tournament for the 18th time, by a daunting 150 strokes. This marks 10 conference titles in the last 11 years for Highland girls golf.
Boys Golf:
For the 3rd straight season, the Highland boys golf team was conference champions, finishing the match with a team score of 326. This is the 16th conference title in team history.
Ultimate Frisbee:
After losing the majority of their team to graduation last season, the Highland-Central combined team was able to recruit lots of new players, and the team is now even bigger than in years prior. The team went 5-4 on the season, including a 4 game win streak in April.
Tennis:
The Highland Boys tennis team clinched the conference title, going 6-0 in city play, ending with a 7-0 defeat over Como Park. This is the 17th conference win in team history.
Doubles duo Andrew Bacigalupi and Bodie Zwank defeated Eagan in the Section 3AA doubles championship, taking 1st place and qualifying for the state tennis tournament. The state tournament will begin on June 8th.

Popular spring sports
By: Thea Berg and Rose Ramadan
As students in High School, there are many different sports that our classmates and friends play during spring. Many schools offer a variety of spring sports such as softball, baseball, track and field, golf, boys tennis, badminton, lacrosse, and club sports such as disc or frisbee golf. But apart from the sports our school provides some other popular spring sports include rowing, or fencing. All of these sports reach out to different audiences, so each sport has a large variety of people playing.
Springtime sports participation is both enjoyable and important. Spending more time outside is a crucial aspect that starts to influence our lives as the weather starts to become warmer. People’s ability to spend as much time outside depends on a variety of factors, including work, school, and other responsibilities. You may gain fitness while enjoying time outside in the warm weather by signing up for a spring sport.
One popular spring sport is golf! Golf is one of the sports that Highland provides for students to join. We have both a boys team and a girls team.
Golf is a very popular sport all around the world with many different audiences. It is a sport that people of all ages play and enjoy. Golf is a very good spring sport to be a part of. Golf is a very personal sport, and you can easily set goals for yourself.
Around the Saint Paul and Como area there are a couple of great golf courses that you can easily play. Highland National Golf course, The Highland 9-Hole, Cedarholm, Como Park Golf Course, Phalen Golf course, Mendota Heights Par-3 Golf Course, and the Town and Country Club golf course. All of these courses except for T&C are easily accessible without a membership, as long as you set up a tee time. At public golf courses such as the ones we mentioned above, the going rate for the price of a tee time is usually around $30. Some 18 hole courses include the price of the golf cart in the tee time price, and other courses have that as an option to pay separately.
We think that golf is a great option for those who are looking for a spring sport that is fun and not a lot of pressure.
Baseball and softball are two more popular spring sports. In our school, softball is a very popular sport practiced by female players. Male athletes enjoy playing baseball, which is also highly well-liked. They are both similar sports. The pitching regulations and the size of the ball are two differences. Despite not knowing the rules, we occasionally enjoy watching a good baseball game.
Badminton is also a sport played at Highland Park Senior High. Though not as popular as other spring sports, it is still very exciting to watch. It is a lot like tennis but played indoors. It includes hitting a birdie across the net to the other side. It may sound like an easy sport but it includes a high amount of commitment and athletic ability.
The team here at Highland consists of only women athletes. They split into teams of singles and doubles, either playing on the court with one teammate or alone. Games are played up to 21 points. Each match is best out of three. If you are unfamiliar with badminton, we would recommend trying it out. Watching it is very satisfying and playing it is very fun.
In the end, we highly encourage you to commit to a sport here at Highland. We also highly recommend coming to any sports events including lacrosse games, golf matches, and ball games.

A mid-season look into the Highland Park softball team
By: Abby Altman
Strength up the middle is one thing most softball teams have learned to prioritize. A strong shortstop, center field, and pitching staff are essential to the success of a team.
For Highland Park’s softball team, this season could very well come down to how well they perform up the middle.
The pitching staff for the 2023 season is identical to that of last season, with junior Ella Johnson and sophomore Morgan Johnson (no relation) as the starters, and junior Lydia Breuber as the team’s relief pitcher.
The 2022 pitching staff had a combined ERA of 7.67, giving up 79 total runs over the season.
Through 5 games this season, Highland Park has already allowed 46 runs, with 11 games still remaining.
Age is another big change on the 2023 team this season. Of the 11 members of the Varsity lineup, there are only 5 upperclassmen, and the majority of the team is either freshmen or 8th graders.
Freshmen twins Analiese and Scarlett Schneider are key players in strength up the middle. With Scarlett at shortstop and Analiese in center field, the twins are looking to secure their places in the field for the rest of their high school career.
Joining Analiese in the outfield is senior Abby Altman in right field, as well as a combination of senior Bella Jack and 8th grader Willow Sadowski in left field. Speed and awareness are essential in the outfield, and Highland’s combination should meet, and hopefully exceed fielding expectations.
On the corners in the infield are sophomore Hannah Gliedman at third base, and a wide variety of players at first base, including Lydia Bruber, Morgan Johnson, and junior Kate Ruebish, when she’s not behind the plate.
Overall, for defense, the team has more than enough weapons to succeed.
On the offensive side of the field, Highland has been even slower at getting things moving.
Through the first 7 games this season, Highland is 3-4, with blowouts from Richfield, Two Rivers, and South Saint Paul, and a close 5-6 loss against Saint Paul Academy.
Highland also handed losses to Humboldt, Johnson, and St. Paul Central.
In their first 3 games, Highland scored only 2 runs, both in the first game of the season against Richfield.
Since then, Highland has had a few blowouts of their own, scoring 19 runs against Humboldt and 26 runs against Johnson, but the majority of those runs were propelled by walks.
Highland Park is one of 7 teams in the St. Paul City conference. Over the past 2 seasons, Highland has taken 1st and 2nd place in the conference, losing to Central in 2022. This conference has struggled in the past, with nearly every team having a losing record each season.
Highland Park and St. Paul Central are once again likely to be the top 2 contenders for the 2023 conference title.
On Thursday, Highland defeated Central 5-3 in a tight showdown, led by exceptional pitching from Ella Johnson, and an abundant number of bunts laid down by Highland’s offense.
Over the next 6 days, Highland has 5 games, including the teams last 3 conference matchups.
