2017 Best Album’s

2017 was overall, the best year for albums; hands down. Let us give you a rundown of the best albums of 2017.

At number one we have Drake, More Life. On this 22-song project, we see many of Drake’s sides: a variety of friends (old and new), local and global, heartbreaks, solo, and features. With features such as Young Thug, Giggs, Kanye West, etc. Drake really put out his best in this album.

Next, is a new artist who featured on Rihanna’s Anti album: Sza. Sza unravels through largely improvised meditations on love and sex, and all the promise that both endure. Fans went crazy when she dropped her album Sza, because she talked about self love, and the confidence a woman should have. From working 9 to 5 and being his “weekend,” Sza flourishes in her own way.

3) 4:44, Jay-Z, the 47 year old multi-millionaire, dropped the year’s self confessional. Jay-Z confronts his own failings as a husband in “4.44” and being a public figure in “Kill Jay-Z.” With multiple samples of music from the 60’s, Jay-Z gives publicity to his own wealth, which his daughter will inherit in the future.

Number 4 is rap’s most powerful voice, at the top of his game, Kendrick Lamar. With his album Damn, one of the number one albums of the year on the charts, he talks about his deepest feelings, world problems, and a lifetime of battling anxiety. With slow jams to upbeat jams, and 50 lines without a break in one stretch, his creativity really made this album perfect.

An unforgettable album that’s still played in many people’s cars, is SweetSexySavage by Kehlani. Kehlani dropped this album mid January, after her mixtape was released in 2016. The album was attracting and appealing to many of her fans, because she wrote all of the songs on the album (aside from the “Intro”). It debuted number three on the U.S. Billboard 200. On her album, Kehlani mentions her previous boyfriend Partynextdoor, who is also a singer/songwriter. She talks about growth, as a person and as a singer, and also how she’s learned from her past. She embraces change, and writes to her young fans to accept how they are.

Back in the early 1900s to 1950s there wasn’t uber or Lyft, instead there was this popular transportation called: streetcars. Yes, that lovely mode of transportation cost only a nickel to ride and it, and it would take you all around St. Paul and Minneapolis. The streetcars date back to 1867, when rails were built in downtown Minneapolis. During the beginning, horses used to drive the streetcars, but that cost the Twin City Rapid Transit (TCRT) a lot of money (because they had to feed the horses). Later they decided to run the streetcars with electricity, which cost less, and was eco friendly, but people had concerns and questioned the streetcars. People feared that the electro cables would attract lightning if there was a thunderstorm.

City buses and automobiles are what took the streetcars out of business. Buses took the place of the streetcars, because streetcars charged more money for each fare, so more money would be made. And automobiles became popular, so people started buying them, and stopped riding the streetcars.

For a lot of years though, the streetcars were great for people who didn’t own any cars; they could get to work, school, library, movies, or anywhere the streetcar went. The company of the streetcars made 2.5 billion dollars in just 5 years, but there were some cons with the streetcars. They didn’t run really fast, and got caught up in traffic.

In St. Paul, they were thinking about bring streetcars back, and putting them right by the airport, by 7th street. This would be really convenient for people who don’t want to rely on somebody else taking them to the airport.

Overall, the streetcars were a success for the many long years they were running. If they ever brought back the streetcars (hopefully), we want every one of you reading this article to ride one.

Healthy lifestyle

Transitioning from the summer and into the fall is pretty hard for a couple of reasons including: 1. work starts for many adults, 2. starting a new school year is hard for kids. But there are some ways to break out of bad old habitats, and start doing things the healthy way!

I know you’ve heard this a lot from doctors, teachers, friends, and even your parents: drink a lot of water. It’s good for you, when you’re sleeping you don’t drink any water and your body is in need of water. So, drinking a glass right when you wake up is good; it gives you energy to actually get up and get your day started.

Eat some breakfast before you leave the house; it doesn’t have to be a big meal just a smoothie or a granola bar would do.

OK, maybe you’re not a morning person. You can crank on some music, and that will stop your feelings of tiredness. Well, don’t just stand there, dance to the music! This isn’t only fun, but it could count as exercising too. Then go to school/work as happy, and energetic as possible.

It’s understandable that it’s hard for many people to start a healthy lifestyle, because most people are busy with life. But putting some effort into changing your lifestyle is all that you need. After coming back from school/work, try to exercise for at least 30 minutes; yes, that’s right, only 30 minutes.

If you really don’t feel like exercising, then try to eat a healthy meal, by a healthy meal we mean – watch out for the amount of calories it contains, and also how much carbs are in it. According to the Human Department of Health and Human Services “Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity, your diet can help you to reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of chronic diseases.”

So, leading a healthy lifestyle is not only good for your physical features, and your self-esteem, but it also reduces the risk of chronic diseases. Examples of chronic diseases are: arthritis, heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure. We hope this information helps you start to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Social media

Social media is great for a lot of reasons: it can educate us, bring us closer together to those who we admire, it’s cheap entertainment, and new friends are just a click away. Another way social media positively impacts us, is it can help us with today’s world. For example, “social media is an integral part of today’s society” according to an article on Teenshiled.com.

Although social media positively impacts resilience, it can also negatively impact it too. For example, infographic states that social media “Takes away time we can spend face to face” This shows that social media can negatively impact a person because instead of spending time with their family or friends, they rely on technology for interaction and entertainment. Addiction to social media can, and will, take away time from the things that are important to you. A lot of studies, like one found on Time.com, even show that social media can make you dumber.

Another negative impact of social media is cyber bullying. Many people decide to bully other people behind a screen. Cyber bullying is a major issue that affects many teenagers’ lives. Bullying is definitely not right, but it’s harder when someone you don’t know keeps harassing you. It even makes it harder to seek help, or confront them, because you don’t know who they are.

What many people don’t know is that social media makes a lot of money off of people. According to Social Networking “ Social network ad spending reached $23.68 billion in 2015 and should reach $35.98 billion by the end of 2017.” Sites like Facebook. Twitter, Tumblr etc. might be free, but they still get money from users that have accounts. So, you might think no money is being made from you, but the truth is these sites and other social media sites are making money off of your entertainment.

Another thing that’s wrong about social media is that your privacy could be invaded. Whatever you post on your social media site is public, so it can be seen by anyone. Many jobs actually look at their candidates post to determine what interests this person. So, if you are a person that posts problematic things, just remember it’s public and everyone can see it, even your future boss.

Social media is a great place to explore yourself, but it also has negative parts to it. Just make sure you’re careful.

Diversity in makeup

On September 8, 2017, Fenty Beauty came out and changed the makeup industry’s game, and it’s all thanks to Rihanna. Rihanna launched her first ever makeup line. I know you’re probably thinking “Why do I care if a celebrity launched her makeup line?” Would you believe it if I told you she launched 40 foundation shades on just her first launch? Crazy right? The majority of makeup lines come with 10 shades when they first launch, and then later on, maybe a couple years later they launch 12 more.

Rihanna has been working on this project since 2015; it took 2 years for her to develop this line. She took notice of how the majority of the makeup brands only focused on lighter skin tones, and women of color have often been left with few color choices, with many makeup companies leaving them entirely out. She really took her time on this project; she focused on developing more darker skin tones rather than lighter tones and it came out as a good opportunity for women of color to find their perfect shade for foundation and concealers.

If you didn’t know, Rihanna’s makeup is always on point, from blended out contour, to beautiful blowy skin. So why wouldn’t makeup lovers buy what she’s selling?

The reason why the launch of Fenty Beauty was a big deal to many makeup artist bloggers was because Rihanna’s aim was to make a more inclusive makeup line, for women of every shade. And indeed, we’re shocked to see such amazing results. And as a woman of color herself she understood the struggle women of color go through to get their shade of makeup.

The launch of her makeup line resulted in many reviews. Makeup artist and bloggers couldn’t wait to create a makeup tutorial on Fenty Beauty. And most of them weren’t disappointed in the results. Most the reviews were positive, and she made sure the cost of the foundation is reasonable for the amount of product in the foundation. She added a lot of product because she wanted the foundation to last more. Overall, her makeup line was a success.

Transition from summer to school

The hardest part of Summer is when it comes to an end. That transition you have to make to get ready for a new school year must be hard for a lot of people. Having to start changing your sleep schedule is a struggle, because you know you got used to sleeping late at night, and waking up late in the afternoon. Having to be excited to see your friends you haven’t seen all summer but that slowly starts to fade into sadness when assignments get thrown at you left to right, and all you want do is zone out during the school day and come home only wanting to complain about how much you dislike school. But hey, who hasn’t? After awhile you get used to it, you may not like it, but after doing it for so many weeks you look at it like eh, whatever.

Students need to be assured that it’s acceptable to be nervous going into a new school year, not expecting your classes to be that hard is something most students expect the first weeks of school. Not having the same classes or lunch as your friends could be hard on some students. And they might end up thinking that the fun part of school is not possible anymore.

But we are here to give you some tips on how to make the beginning of a school year go nice and smoothly.

  • First get your sleeping schedule in check. Start by sleeping early the last week of summer. To get you used to it.
  • Second if your friends are not in the same class as you, make some new friends, we know it’ll be hard but hey, at least you tried and you might make a couple new friends.
  • Last, but not least, make sure you have fun with the new school year, don’t stress yourself too much; you don’t want to do that for the 10 months you’re in school (that would be no fun).

Hope these tips will help you feel more at “home” this school year!
