Negativity towards LGBTQ+

Highland is a very diverse and open school. From what we have seen, Highland tries to make students feel welcomed, accepted, and feel like they have someone to talk to. While the school does accomplish that, some of the students still feel un-welcomed or that they can’t be themselves here.

As students here, we hear so much throughout the day: positive and negative. But something we have noticed is that students tend to make fun and use phrases that are offensive to the LGBTQ+ community. Phrases like “that’s so gay” or the word “fag” are still being thrown around like it’s nothing. Most people don’t think twice before they talk/say anything.

We asked some of the students at this school that are a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and supporters, about their thoughts on this situation. A member in the community, who chose to stay anonymous said, “It does annoy me. There is no point of using words or phrases like that. It’s pointless and stupid.”

Someone else we asked, who also chose to stay anonymous said, “We aren’t taken seriously. We are made fun of all the time and no one is doing anything about it. People are getting in trouble for saying the “n” word but not for using ‘gay’ or ‘fag’.”

As people that have many friends in the LGBTQ+ community, it hurts us when they’re hurt due to the things people are saying about them, or when people throw around “gay” and “fag” like nothing.

We should all work together, not only as a school, but as a community and friends, to try to fix this issue. We certainly can’t control what others say, but we can try to persuade them to be kinder.

Make-up dupes

The best thing in the world is getting almost the exact same thing for a lot less. In the make-up world the term “dupes” refers to getting a high-end quality product, that is cheaper than the original. Obviously dupes are not the same quality as the originals, but they are almost the same color.

Are they okay though? In our opinion, yes, because they’re not bad quality either, they’re just a little less quality for the same look.

Now, we’re not saying all of the dupes are really good and amazing, because let us just say that there are really awful dupes out there. But, make-up changes all around us, and everyday products are selling and attracting customers. You see it all over the Internet, the beautiful and interesting looks Youtubers and people all over the world are creating. One can do so much with makeup, from creating a sharp cat eye to giving yourself faux freckles, but we don’t all have the money to purchase expensive makeup products.

With all this in mind, Evelyn and I decided to get some popular high end makeup products and compare them to more affordable drugstore products.

Kat Von D, is a tattoo artist with a great vegan makeup line. One of her mosts popular products is her Tattoo Liner in the color “Trooper,” but it retails for $21. When looking for dupes we came across the wet n wild proline felt tip eyeliner, which retails from $1.99-$3.99 depending on what drugstore you go to. We tested both on Jennifer’s eyes, and they’re both very similar. Wet n wild was a little less pigmented but you could build up the product. The only difference we found between both of the products was that the wet n wild eyeliner didn’t have a smooth application. But for the most part, the products were basically the same: both waterproof, both last all day, and both come in black and brown.

We also decided to test Maybelline’s “The Rocket” mascara, which retails anywhere from $5.99-$8.99, again depending on whatever drugstore you go to, as a dupe for Benefits “They’re Real” mascara which retails for $24 at benefitcosmetics.com or Sephora. The brushes are somewhat similar and they both come in black and brown, but Benefit also has a blue shade of mascara. They both lift the lashes and give lots of volume. They’re both equally great and make your lashes ten times longer.

There are many more dupes out there but we tested some of the everyday products people wear. Hopefully, this helps you save some money so you can buy even more makeup.

Meet the new staff members!

A new school year includes: new supplies, new opportunities, new students, and new teachers! This year we’ve welcomed 10 new staff members to our school. We had the chance to go around and ask some of them a little about themselves and their thoughts on Highland so far. All of the new staff members were very open and kind about answering the questions that we had for them. They all had very interesting things to say about the school and about themselves.

Ms. Rahman, Highland’s new librarian

All of the new staff members have been loving the vibe of Highland. The new librarian Ms. Rahman said, “I love the friendly, warm, and caring vibe I get from the staff members and the students.” Each staff member that we interviewed said that they can’t help but love just how lovely and kind everyone here at Highland is. Their favorite thing about Highland so far is the students! They all love just how friendly and smart the students are.

Mr. Auran, our new athletic director, said he was excited to come back to the high school side, this time in a new position.

All of the new staff members are all very friendly and they all are very dedicated to their jobs here at Highland. We asked each staff member why they had chosen to come here and work at Highland. They all said that they loved what Highland had to offer for them, and that they’d heard so many wonderful things about this school. They all were very excited to start working here. and once they did, they couldn’t help but love the atmosphere.

Mr. Auran, the athletic director, who grew up near Highland, and also graduated from here, said that, “He always loved just how open-minded and fun the staff and students were.”

During these interviews we got to know something fun and interesting about each of the staff members, and learned that all of them were pretty cool. All the fun facts went from playing the guitar for themselves and only themselves to doing scuba diving.

We also found out that Mr. Rios loves to sing and write poetry and that Ms. Rahman had studied classical piano while growing up, but she hasn’t played since.

Hopefully, all of these new staff members create new and awesome memories here with us and have a great year at Highland.
