On Thursday May 8th, 2025, white smoke appeared from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling the end of the papal conclave and with it, the election of a new pope.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was born September 14th, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. Pope Leo XIV has two older brothers, Louis and John. They all grew heavily in the Catholic faith, and the family attended St. Mary of the Assumption parish. The Prevost family “were known at bustling St. Mary’s as dedicated and devout musicians, altar boys, lectors and volunteers.”

Pope Leo XIV will be known for many firsts. He’s the first American-born pontiff and first Augustinian pope. He is also the first pope to root for the Chicago White Sox. Not only is Pope Leo the first American and Augustinian pope, he is also the first Peruvian pope. Even though he wasn’t born in Peru, he is a naturalized citizen, and spent 20 years there serving as Apostolic Administrator.

Pope Leo XIV became a friar of Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and was ordained as a priest in 1982. He did missionary work in Peru in the 1980s and 1990s. He served as a parish pastor, diocesan official, seminary teacher, and administrator. From 2001 to 2013, he was elected prior general of the Order of Saint Augustine. From 2015 to 2023, he returned to Peru as Bishop of Chiclayo. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him perfect of the Dicastery for Bishop and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, and later made him a cardinal that same year.

Pope Leo XIV went to Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas – Angelicum in Rome, Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University in 1977. In 1982, he graduated from C.T.U with a master’s degree in Divinity. In 1984 he graduated from Pontifical University with a Licentiate of Canon Law, and later graduated with a Doctor of Canon Law in 1987.

The Pope can speak several languages, English being his first. He can speak English, Spanish, Italian, French, and Portuguese and two important theological languages being Latin and German. This would put Pope Leo in the top 3 of most languages spoken through history by popes. First would be Pope John Paul II who was in papacy from 1978 to 2005, who spoke 12 different languages.

His choice of name was to honor Pope Leo XIII, who helped shape the church in the United States. He was known as one of the most influential popes in modern Catholic history, serving from 1878 to 1903. While there is no general rule for how popes pick their papal names, they are mostly picked based on personal and symbolic decisions, personal reflections, and the popes desired focus during papacy. For example, Pope John Paul I chose his name as a tribute to both Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI, then later Pope John Paul II picked his name in tribute to Pope John Paul I after he passed 33 days after elected Pope.

Review on the new Netflix show ‘Forever’

By: Nereida Dominguez Remedios

*Warning: This article will have spoilers

The new Netflix show named ‘Forever’ is about this teenage boy named Justin Edwards (played by Michael Cooper Jr.). Justin goes to a party and reunites with his childhood friend named Keisha Clark (played by Levied Simone).

The first episode of ‘Forever’ starts off with Justin wanting to ask his parents Dawn (played by Karen Pittman) and Eric (played by Wood Harris) if he can go to a party. When he does go to ask, he can hear that his parents are fighting. When he walks in the room his parents go silent and when he asks to go out his mom automatically says no but his dad says yes. He listens to his mom and goes back into his room.

A couple of minutes later, his dad walks in telling him he can go. When he gets there, he realizes he is one out of two Black guys there after he sees his friend. They hang out and after a bit, his friend leaves. When he gets up, he realizes he see this beautiful Black girl and when she comes up to him he realizes she was his closest friend in elementary school. After a bit of talking, he asks her on a date and after a while they decide to go to the movies. When the movie is over, Justin finds out about a scandal that happened at Keisha’s old high school.

After watching the first episodes I was automatically so invested into the shows I couldn’t stop watching it.

In the show I really enjoyed watching the relationship between Justin and Keisha where you see them blooming together and then changing into a toxic relationship, then getting older and realizing they belong together, even though they’re going to different colleges.

Overall, watching ‘Forever’ for the first time was the best decision I have ever made. I really enjoyed it and I found it very interesting seeing Keisha and Justin’s relationship develop. Ten out ten and I would definitely recommend this to others.

Environmental Racism in Minnesota

By: Alice Rapacz & Cameron Garcia-Nelson

Environmental racism is a big problem in Minnesota. Environmental racism is when neighborhoods of color and indigenous neighborhoods are at a higher risk to environmental harm. These neighborhoods are at a 91% risk of above air pollution guidelines. There are many neighborhoods here in Minnesota that are affected like the Rondo neighborhood and the East Phillips neighborhood. The harmful pollution can come from factories, waste facilities, construction, and vehicles. White neighborhoods have much better health compared to neighborhoods of color and indigenous neighborhoods. The pollution causes people to have asthma-like symptoms and heart disease. Nitrogen dioxide is what pollutes the air and causes people to have these symptoms.

For my final capstone project in my Critical Ethnic Studies class, my partner and I decided to do our project on environmental racism because it is a very real and current issue that affects people all over Minnesota. For the project it contained our final product, a paper, and an evaluation of what we learned from our project and the class.

For our final project, we decided to do a website that would be able to inform Highland Park students, staff, and community about environmental racism. We did a lot of research learning about what environmental racism is, who is affected by it, how, and so much more. We read stories from people who suffered from the harmful pollutants in the air and how their health was at risk due to it. We learned about different forms of pollution and what areas they affect. We put all this information on our website so that people reading it would be informed.

Here is the link to our final capstone website. There is some of the information above and so much more so that you can be educated on about environmental racism. We also included how you can help and make an impact on changing this issue.

Recipe review: Peanut butter protein balls

By: Austin Bailey Zimmerman

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup natural peanut butter or other nut butter
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut

Instructions:

  1. Combine oats, peanut butter (or other nut butter), honey, chocolate chips and coconut in a medium bowl.
  2. Using a 1-tablespoon measure, roll the mixture into balls.
  3. Put balls in the fridge (or freezer) to harden.
  4. Enjoy!

Review:

This recipe was great to make. It took me less than 10 minutes to make the balls, and it was so easy. There aren’t many ingredients at all and only 3 steps! The balls themselves tasted amazing, the peanut butter was very savory so the sweet honey really balanced it out. The chocolate chips and oats gave it a bit of a crunch and great texture. Sometimes I like to dip them in melted chocolate and freeze them to make them into more of a dessert.

I absolutely love eating these before going to the gym or going on a run. They give me lots of energy and protein, just without the unnecessary additives like a protein bar has. It has all very natural ingredients and is so healthy. I also eat them just for a snack because they are very satisfying and filling.

I got this recipe from Eating Well (https://www.eatingwell.com/recipe/275207/peanut-butter-energy-balls/) by Lisa Valente. She made this recipe so easy to follow and the website is very easy to navigate. The peanut butter balls were so good and so healthy, and she balanced health and a treat perfectly.

I have made these many times now, and each time they are gone very quickly because my brother likes to eat them before a workout as well. I really enjoy them, and I think you would too! Try this easy recipe out!

Summer activities

By: Chloe Rocha

Now that the weather is warming up, it’s hard to know what to do without spending loads of money. If you are in this situation then this article will help give you ideas on what to do without using money.

1. Go on a walk

There are a lot of beautiful trails in Saint Paul that you can explore and see the beautiful sights.

Some of my favorite places to go are the Summit overlook park, located on Summit Ave and Ramsey Street. Another one of my favorite spots is an overlook along the Mississippi River. This place is located at the World War I monument and there are many trails that you can follow.

2. Go to the beach

The beach can offer many different activities for you and your family or friends to do. You could go swimming in the water, or just lay and relax while enjoying the summer weather. A bonus to this is that you will also get a good tan, but make sure to apply sunscreen.

3. Have a picnic

You can find a nice park outside and pack up some of your favorite foods and a blanket. This is one that you can do with your friends, family, or even by yourself too!

4. Stargazing

Once the sun goes down, you can go outside and look at all the beautiful stars. To have a better experience you could drive further away from the city so all the lights don’t take away from the stars.

5. Gardening

There are so many beautiful flowers and plants that you could place in your backyard. Gardening is a great way to brighten up the exterior of your house

6. Backyard Camping

You don’t always need to go to a camping ground to go camping because you can do it in the comfort of your own home. Just get a tent and set it up in your backyard.

7. Garage sale

Having a garage sale is a great way to declutter your house and also you can make some money by doing this as well.

8. Hammocking

You can set up your hammock almost anywhere. This could be done at home in your backyard or at a nice park in the shade.

9. Tour a museum

Many museums offer free admission days. On one of those days you could go and tour the museum and see all the different things they have inside.

10. Game night

For this one you only need a few friends or family members. Find some of your favorite games to play and make a night out of it.

If you have a very competitive family like I do, you could even create a tournament and see who wins!

All of these are options that you can do throughout the summer without having to spend too much money.

The importance of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’

By: Kate Tabor

Image created with ChatGPT

The movie ‘Little Women’ by Greta Gerwig has been my favorite movie since it came out in 2019. At the time, I would’ve been 11. I’m not sure exactly what it was that made me originally fall in love with the film, but I do know why I continue to love it.

I’m not really sure how many times I’ve seen the movie, but enough times to be able to recite almost every scene. In case you aren’t familiar with the story of ‘Little Women’ The story follows four sisters in the years after the Civil War, and goes back and forth between them then, and their childhood.

In a way, I believe the story encapsulates the spectrum of what it means to be a woman. Each sister has their own passions, and their own way of going about them.

Jo, the “main character” has dreams of being a writer in New York, and hates everything “feminine.”  She goes about the notion that women don’t need a man, or love, in order to be fulfilled, and she claims she doesn’t want love. She goes on to marry Professor Friedrich Bhaer, who she met and has grown close with in New York. The reason I find this very interesting isn’t because I think what she believes is any less true, or takes away from her point, but rather it amplifies it. It shows that yes, women are their own people, with their own dreams and passions and brains, which Jo argues herself in the movie, but yet you can still yearn for love while being all that and more.

Oftentimes, without even meaning to, women and girls give up pieces of themselves for the men that they love, or the men who claim to love them, and though we live in our modern society, this still happens, though in smaller and unnoticed ways.

However, this all begs the question, is it wrong for women to yearn for traditional love? Of course not. Meg, the eldest sister, had a dream to marry a wealthy man and to live a life of comfort. She wanted to be a mother, and a wife, by the standards of back then. She wanted to embody that traditional mold of a woman. I find there’s nothing wrong with that, and it even strengthens Jo’s original point, too. At the end of the day, a woman should be able to choose her passion, whatever that may be.

Amy, the youngest sister, and my favorite, has dreams of being a successful painter. She’s oftentimes underlooked. She strives for greatness, and won’t settle for average. Maybe she’s my favorite becaus she reminds me the most of me, but I think it’s also because she has big dreams, and isnt afraid to chase them. She knows what she wants, and won’t settle for less, and I really admire that about her. Especially for those times, it wasnt common for women to be supported in pursuing their own passion in a work environment.

I could say much more about this movie, and go into even greater depth, but to summarize this all, Greta Gerwig showed the side of women that often gets overlooked, especially in the media. She shows the real side, a side that doesn’t revolve around men, but doesn’t neglect the idea of love. So, if you haven’t before, go watch her version of ‘Little Women’.

Vincent Van Gogh

By: Sylvia Yannsdottir

Self-Portrait by Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most well known artists, with countless world renowned pieces of art. His work was very imaginative. It challenged the way that people thought about art at the time, and heavily influenced the way that people expressed themselves through art later on.

There are a lot of things that make Van Gogh’s art so unique. At the time, it was not very typical to see art like his. His style, color schemes, attention to detail, brushwork, and his appreciation for natural landscapes were all factors that set him apart from other artists.

He was born in 1853, in the Netherlands, and he passed away in 1890, in France. As he grew up, he always had an appreciation for art, and he spent a lot of time trying to make a career out of it, although he was not successful with that. Over his lifetime, he created more than 1500 pieces, yet he only sold one. His art went by unappreciated, as he never really gained any attention for his art until after he had passed away.

A major contribution to his unsuccessful career was the fact that people were not able to appreciate his art at the time. It was very common for artists to paint extremely realistic portraits, or landscapes, rather than to experiment with abstract art. While Van Gogh still made realistic paintings, the techniques he used had set him aside from the typical style of art that people were interested in, so he was never able to profit from his passion.

Near the end of Van Gogh’s life, he unfortunately began to suffer from mental illness. He started to lose a grasp of reality, and he was very sad with his life. Although he tried to recover through medical attention, he ultimately shot himself, which led to his death at 37 years old.

It is important to recognize how much of an impact Van Gogh has made. Although his story contains isolation, and struggle, he still managed to create such an intriguing and beautifully creative legacy. Overall, his work has been able to bring together wide and diverse groups of people to appreciate his art, and he has forever changed the way people have gone about making art.

The election of a new pope

By: Maya Vossen-Nelson

A pope is the bishop of Rome in the Catholic religion. Catholicism took root after Jesus Christ’s death spreading across the world as his followers formed a “universal” church with a bishop of Rome holding supremacy.

The pope is seen as the successor of Saint Peter, the first apostle, and a leader in establishing the church while living out Jesus’s teachings. The pope makes decisions on faith and morality issues which are considered binding on all Catholics. Given the pope’s role in advocating on social issues, the pope holds importance on an international scale, not only as the leader of the world’s Catholic Church and as the head of the Vatican City but also as a major voice in global affairs.

After a pope dies or resigns, a new pope must be elected. The pope is chosen at the Vatican in private gatherings of cardinals called conclaves. The happenings inside the conclave are considered sacred and surrounded with secrecy. During the period of selection, all the cardinals residing in the Vatican are not permitted any contact with the outside world.

As of May 16, 2025, there are 252 cardinals and 135 of whom are cardinal electors. The cardinal electors represent all seven continents and 71 countries. When selecting a new pope the cardinal electors consider factors such as their ability to unify the church and navigate modern challenges. The cardinals debate and vote for their preferred candidate until an individual gets a two thirds majority.

Once a candidate receives a two thirds majority vote, the dean of the College of Cardinals informs the prospective pope and asks him if he accepts the position. Once the new pope accepts, the ballots of the final round of voting are burned with chemicals producing the iconic white smoke that billows from the Sistine Chapel chimney and signals the election of a new pope. This is a very ceremonious moment for Catholics and people will begin to gather to await the announcement of the new pope’s identity.

Inside the Apostolic Palace, a document will be drawn up certifying the elected cardinal has agreed to become the new pope. The voting cardinals then approach the newly elected pope and make acts of homage and obedience. Finally, the pope is taken into the Room of Tears where he chooses his papal name and is dressed in papal vestments before appearing before the city of Rome on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
