Cinco De Mayo 2017

On May 4th, Highland is going to have its Cinco de Mayo celebration and performance.

Last year’s performance included dances like, Bachata, Cumbia, Duranguense, traditional Aztec dances, and several Folklorico dances, most of which were choreographed by students.

I asked Sunthany, a junior at Highland, her thoughts on last year’s Cinco performance and she said, “I liked how the whole stage was decorated to fit the occasion.” She also said, “I liked how they brought in dancers other than the students.”

I also talked to Jennifer, another junior, and she said, “In my opinion, some of the dances were a little too long. They were good but they kinda went on for a long time.”

Xitlaly, a freshman, was also asked about the performance and said “I’m glad that Highland takes out time to celebrate different cultures. And I’ve heard that the performance is good. I’m glad all 7th hours get to go.”

The performance, and celebration, is put on by Union Latina, an after school group here at Highland, to celebrate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This year, the dances were choreographed mostly by the students, and the art and decorations were made here at Highland.

This year’s performance is going to be in the auditorium during 7th hour on Thursday, May 4th, and all classes were invited to attend. A second performance will take place after school at 7:00 pm. There will be a dinner held before the performance, at 6:00 pm, in the cafeteria.

The Timberwolves new logo

The Timberwolves, Minnesota’s professional basketball team, unveiled their new logo for the 2017-2018 season. This change came on April 11, 2017, during halftime of their final home game of the season against Oklahoma City.

The logo change is to stand for the new era that is coming; the Timberwolves franchise is trying to move in a new direction. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this new era of Timberwolves basketball than with the unveiling of our new logo, in front of our dedicated fans, on Fan Appreciation Night,” said Timberwolves CEO Ethan Casson. The CEO later went on to say how the new logo is the way to a new exciting path.

The logo is only the first surrounding their new face. With new leaders on and off of the court, the Timberwolves are planning on revealing new uniforms this summer along with a remodel of the Target Center. The remodel is going to add new seats, more space, and a new court design.

The logo was in the process of being created for 12 months. It was designed by the Timberwolves ownership, team executives, the NBA, and design expert Rodney Richardson of RARE Design. The new logo is a combination of past logos. It includes some of the same colors but with a new refreshed hue of the blue and green. The new colors include midnight blue, aurora green, lake blue, moonlight grey, and frost white. The logo also still includes a wolf, but this time it is howling. Wolves use their howl to warn others; it shows their fierce side. Wolves also use the howl to reconnect and bond as a family. The new logo is a perfect new face to the up and coming season for the Wolves.

Hair trends

Many people like to style their hair in many different ways, which is also very unique. You might be interested in trying some of the styles yourself!

But, just doing your hair, in general, is also really good, because you should fix your hair before going anywhere so people won’t stare at you like something is odd about you.

Now, there are many hairstyles that are popular. They come from celebrities, what society thinks is trending, and what people do to their hair.

There are many hair trends; let me tell you about 7 of them:

  1. Super Sleek: The straight, shiny, and center-parted hair is one of the biggest trends for 2017. But you should have your hair look healthy, not fried. Also, have a mist of heat protectant through your hair before touching it with a straightener.
  2. High Pony: Slick your hair up, which should look all the way up. It should look nice in a rumpled texture or stick-straight. The high ponytail adds both an elegance and ease to every ensemble. Also, a bonus tip – the tighter you secure it, the more lifted your face looks.
  3. Flat Waves: It should be in between beachy or bouncy; the flat iron waves are the new curling iron waves. You could also create a bend in your hair just by pushing your hair upward, then make the shape with a few clamps of your iron. Release and repeat. Also, just keep your ends straight for the finish.
  4. Growing-Out Slag: The slag haircut was a hit in 2016. The hair just passes the shoulders and the bangs are long enough to be split down in the middle
  5. The Hair Flip: For the hair flip,  you just have to flip your hair from one side to the other, creating tons of volume as a result.
  6. Slick and Shiny: The slick, shiny hair only looks like it’s sopping wet. This is also a 2017 hair trend that looks just as good like on the runway and IRL. Mostly work with a heavy dose of the styling cream, from your roots to the mid-way length, which will hold a little bit of shine in your hair.
  7. Lastly, The Golden Bronde: This color is the perfect warm-toned hair color that will be well suited on all skin tones.

There are many hairstyles that are trending, and these are just a few examples that you may be interested in. Or, you can always just do your hair however you like.
