Movie review

I recently saw the movie Everest in 3D at Regal Brooklyn Center Stadium 20. When I got to the theater I paid $10.87 for my ticket and they gave me 3D glasses. When I got into the theater it was empty and my brother and sister and I were the only ones in the theater.

The beginning of the movie was kind of  boring but it looked cool because it was in 3D. When I was watching the movie in 3D it made it more interesting to watch the film and it made things in the film look beautiful like the mountain and the snow; it  also made it look like you were right there.

The movie was about a team of climbers that try to climb mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and how they had to overcome situations during the journey up the mountain. It was based on a true story, and it’s a little sad. To be honest, my sister and I cried towards the end of the film (not to spoil the film, I won’t say why).

Overall, it’s a good movie. On a scale from 1-10 I give it a 7.5 because it has a slow start and is kind ofboring in the beginning but overall it’s a great film. I recommend this film to people who like to see people conquer their dreams.

Events in the Twin Cites this fall

There are many events during the fall, whether you are looking for a family friendly event, or more of a fun friend activity. Here are a couple of ideas of things you can do.

If you’re looking for more of a family friendly activity it seems that the biggest corn maze could be very fun. The location is 8001 109th Avenue North Brooklyn Park, MN 55445. This is the link to their website:

https://twincitiesmaze.com/special-offer-2-off/?gclid=CPT7oP_u08gCFQccaQod8E0EQg

The tickets are $10 online but are $12 at the gate. Children under the height of 36″ are free. Along with the purchase of a corn maze ticket, there are more activities that come with admission such as a corn pit, petting zoo, a hay ride, and more .

If you’re looking for more of a friend going out, and having fun, night Valleyscare is great if you like rides. It is open from 7:00 pm to 12:00am on Fridays and Saturdays. This can be a good time for a group of friends to go out. The Valleyscare website is:

https://www.valleyfair.com/haunt/

The tickets are $40, but you can get them cheaper the night before at Cub Foods. There are several rides or activities at Valleyfair that are not included in admission.

Halloween Trick-or-Tricking

Little witches zooming by, mini ghost floating among the streets, other weird people disguising themselves in the most strangest costumes like whoopee cushions and ketchup and mustard. Guess what? It’s almost Halloween. And do you know what that means? TRICK-OR-TREATING TIME!!! This is one of the most exciting time of the year where children will be dressed in various costumes, going from door to door begging for some candy. The goal of Halloween is to gather the most possible amount of candy during that single night and indulge ourselves with our well deserved sweets (And most likely get sugar high right before bed and sick the next morning).

Even though we are currently high school students and that it may seem a bit lame for us to be the ones trick or tricking, you still might have to take your younger siblings or neighbors trick or tricking, therefore you should take the initiative to take them to the best places to get the best and abundant amount of candies.

Here are a few places where you should definitely visit during Halloween:

PALACE AVENUE

On Palace Avenue, you will find front yards transformed into haunting graveyards, covered in cobwebs and mist of fog along with eerie background music as you walk towards their door, bringing you a chill up your spine. A giant spider supposedly had climbed up on the roof of a residents house, but don’t worry, it’s just a plastic inflatable spider. Traditional orange yellow glowing pumpkins with carved out images of spooky monsters, goblins, and cats are embellished all over their homes. Even if you don’t have any intentions to retrieve some candy, at least take a moment to enjoy the view and appreciate their devotion and much time invested into celebrating Halloween.

SUMMIT AVENUE

During your late night trip, you MUST head on over to Summit Avenue at least once. Residents there will treat you will giant candy bars such as jumbo size Snickers, Three Musketeers,  and so much more! They have always been known for their generous handouts and also the same nice decoration found on Palace Avenue so don’t be discourage to come here to trick or trick.

CHIPOTLE

Every year on Halloween, Chipotle will be there ready to hand out free burritos to anyone who arrives to their restaurant in their Halloween costumes. It’s even said that they will still give you one even if you don’t chose to participate in the Halloween spirit. This is only considered to be a good deal if you actually enjoy eating food served at Chipotle. Either way, who doesn’t like free stuff?

Tips for a safe adventure:

  • Please, please don’t dress completely in black attire. No one is going to be able to see you when you try to blend in wit the night. According to USA Today, 115 pedestrians were killed on Halloween days throughout a 21 year period between 1990 and 2010.
  • Stranger danger: Don’t even consider talking to strangers when you’re alone….all by yourself. Actually, make sure to tag someone along with you, for it’s always best to not go anywhere all alone at night. It would also be quite lonely to go trick go tricking by yourself. Remember, the more the merrier!
  • Only eat candy that has not been opened. Who knows how they might have contaminate them, or what they even put in them, or the negative intentions of creepy people who want to harm innocent individuals like you.
  • As high school student, we should be the ones to watch over younger children and set a good example for them. Some older kids may attempt to bully them and steal their massive buckets of candy, so we suggest you be the better person and stuck up for those poor little kids. See something, do something.
  • Be safe Highland!!

Is it worth the debt?

College is a huge step most of you will choose to take. It’s no secret that everything that is implied with the word ‘college’ can send a rush of stress down your spine. The cost of this basically mandatory

education has increased 1,120% over the past thirty years, according to Bloomberg Business, a business that delivers market news, data and financial analysis. Tuition costs has increased by 15% since 2008, and these increasing numbers seem to equal a goal only the top 1% may end up achieving; the American Dream.

Many Americans are beginning to question if adding to the $1 trillion of nation wide student debt is worth the nine to five desk job. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told the Associated Press in June that lowering college costs needs to be priority for the whole country. “As a nation, we need more college graduates in order to stay competitive in the global economy,” Duncan said, but that may not be achievable due to the steadily increase of national debt and student loans.

So all of these numbers beg the question, is being thousands of dollars in debt worth the chance at getting an average paying job?

Speaking from a high school student’s perspective, I don’t believe four to five years of digging a hole in my family pocket for a piece of paper that has failed thousands of Americans in the search for a substantial job, is worth the ever-growing debt, and many high schoolers would agree. “I feel like it’ll be hard to pay it off, but once you get a job you can start paying it off…but you’ll spend most of your life paying it off.” says Highland High school student, Cristina Ebner.

I asked another Highland student, Amarah Otto, if the debt that would follow your acceptance of your college diploma would be worth the lack of crucial funds. “It depends on the profession you’re going for. Like if you’re going to be a doctor you can pay it off, but if you’re a teacher you might have have a harder time paying it off.”

Otto also added that “you don’t need to go to an expensive school to get a good education or to get a good job” which is what might’ve been the thought process of a recent Highland graduate. He opted out of attending a four year university in exchange for a debt free education at a community college. He tweeted that he had just paid for his college and the lack of debt feels great.

So ask yourself, is over-paying for a chance at a successful future worth it?

The gender spectrum

Living in the United States, we have a gender binary culture. Meaning that the idea of only two genders (male and female) are constantly reinforced in our society. Non binary can mean a variety of different things: it can be used for someone who is a bit of both genders, someone who is strongly on one gender side but can identify as the opposite, or someone who has no gender.

In an interview with BBC news, Richard O’Brein, writer of The Rocky Horror Show, has spoken about his gender, and being “70% male, 30% female.” O’Brien still goes by the he/him pronouns, but has started taking the female hormone oestrogen.

Cambridge University professor, Melissa Hines, says “There is not a gender binary, that there’s a range of gender, and there are many dimensions of gender and an individual person can be in a different position in terms of how masculine or feminine they are on each of these dimensions.”

Laverne Cox, a transgender woman on the popular show Orange is the New Black, is a transgender activist and says, “We still live in a binary world in which the idea is imposed on us that there are only two genders; we need to change that perception.” Non binary people can be transgender, but male to female and female to male transgender people are not non binary. This distinction is important because transgender is an umbrella term used for people switching their genders, while people like Laverne Cox is strictly transgender because she is within the male/female binary.

Seph, a mathematician interviewed for Transmedia Watch, says, “I often feel like people like me are invisible.” Non binary people deserve to be respected and acknowledged. If you’re not sure what a person’s gender is, it’s recommended you use the pronoun they/them until you’re sure. Their gender should not be erased, and bullying and being hateful isn’t going to change their gender.

Get to know the art teachers

At HPSH we have an excellent art department. I was able to ask Ms. Shomion and Ms. Schultz some questions about art. Their responses were as follows:

20151013_102217
Ms. Linn, Ms. Schultz, & Ms. Shomion

Ms. Shultz

1) What is art to you?   Art is a visual language. Art is a language that all people can use.

2) What do you like about art?   I like that art can mean so many things to so many people. I like that art can be “tight” or “loose”. Art can be very expressive and offer the artist a time to be still and think in different ways than they do at other times in their day.

3) What made you wanna become an art teacher?  I knew I would always be learning about new artists and new techniques. I also knew I would be working with other adults who are specialists in many other interesting areas like math, science, and history.

4) Who’s your favorite artist and why?   I really admire the work of the American Regionalists, who capture the curving landscapes and political figures from the Midwest. I also really like other artists whose work is more abstract or stylized like Harlem Renaissance artist Jacob Lawrence.

5) Do you work on your art on your free time?   I really enjoy it when I have time to paint, sculpt, or take photographs in my spare time. In the IB Art & Design class I sometimes have the luxury of creating art alongside students to model artistic thinking.

6) What makes a good artist in your opinion?   A good artist is anyone who is willing to risk sharing their own point of view through art.

7) How does art make you feel?   Art makes me feel calm. Art makes me feel connected with my natural environment, and the world of materials. Art can be very tactile because so much of it is made with your own hands.

Ms. Shomion

1) What is art to you?
Art is a creative expression of ideas, thoughts and emotions.  Art can be seen, heard and/or felt.

2) What do you like about art?
I love that Art both fulfills the need of the artist to express and the audience’s need to experience.

3) What made you wanna (want to) become an art teacher
Of the many things I enjoyed studying in school, Art was what I kept choosing to do in my spare time.  It took a few years to realize Art filled a need within me to be both solitary and social.  I could be completely quiet and introspective while creating and communicate so much in the sharing of my Artwork afterwards.  The thought of being surrounded by Art all day, and guiding young people through the process of creating and appreciating Art really resonated with me.  Teaching also fills my need to be both independent and social.  While I’m teaching I’m communicating constantly with my students; listening, watching and responding to their needs.  When I’m alone, prepping and planning, I do a massive amount of remembering and reflecting on the hundreds of tiny interactions I had that day.  Many people say teaching is an Art, I agree 100%.  Although I am exhausted at the end of each day, I enjoy almost every minute of it.

4) Who’s your favorite artist and why?
Wow, I can’t possibly choose one.  Intellectually I favor abstraction and/or surrealism over realism and visually I really love the contrast of combining a limited color palette with dark blacks and bright whites.

5) Do you work on your art on your free time?
Yes! I am currently working on a 28×28 painting of the three generations of women in my family and an 18×24 mixed medium piece that explores the upheaval, despair and anger I feel surrounding my mother’s death last Winter.

6) What makes a good artist in your opinion?
I know it sounds cheesy, but throw a dart at the IB Learner Profile poster and a good artist would need to embody that characteristic.  It takes a lot of hard work and self awareness to be able to push yourself, encounter obstacles, reflect, persevere and do it again, and again and again.  Good artists learn and grow everyday from both themselves and the world around them.

7) How does art make you feel?
Art makes me feel human.

Bernie Sanders and young voters

If you are like me, or one of the many other young people who will be voting in next year’s presidential election, you may wondering who to cast your ballot for. You may be looking at prominent billionaire and republican candidate Donald Trump, or former first lady Hillary Clinton. But what if I were to tell you that there was an even better option, a candidate who would help out young people like me and you, and help pave the way for a more affordable and painless future.

Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders is campaigning to bring an affordable college plan that would make all public colleges and universities tuition-free. While other democratic candidates are also putting forth plans to make college more affordable, Sanders’ plan takes it a step further. This plan, known as the College For All Act, which was released last may, claims that it will eliminate federal profit from student debt and would make refinancing for students much more favorable. According to his website, Sanders’ program plans to get the funding for this endeavor from the place that he constantly harbors for sending our country into an economic crisis- Wall Street. With this arrangement the government would be covering 67% of the cost, while the states would be responsible for the remaining 33%, thus making college tuition free. For everyone.

Mr. Sanders’ college plan is an exciting proposition for young people around the country. It would ultimately eliminate not only college tuition, but years of stress and crippling debt. Plans like these have been successful in many other countries around the world, and it can be successful here as well, as long as we vote Bernie.

2015-2016 Highland’s homecoming game

Chloe Hunter and I interviewed Lily O’Donnell and Davina Newman about the homecoming game against Fridley. Our first question was asked to Davina. “What was your favorite part of the game?” She answered saying she enjoyed watching Angelo Martin’s catch. We also asked her what she thought about the crowds enthusiasm, she said it could have been improved if people were more on their feet and cheering, she also would have liked a better game score. Over all she rated the game a 7 out of 10.

Lily’s favorite part of the game was watching the cheer leaders. She would have also wanted the crowd to improve their enthusiasm as well, although she was so excited that we won with a winning score of 21-20. She also mentioned how the score could have improved if it was more stretched out. She scored the game a 9 out of 10.

Over all they both enjoyed watching the game and agreed that there could have been more excitement and energy brought to the game, remember that next year Highland Scots!

Homecoming fan section

Great turnout for the fan section, lots of us repped our HP pride and came out in fun, red outfits to support our football players in the homecoming game against the Fridley Tigers. The bleachers were jam packed with fans cheering on the boys and supporting Highland Park athletics. We saw staff, students, parents, siblings, many former students, and many others come out to the homecoming game. We also had a great performance from the band. Being as this is the first homecoming game we’ve won in 2 years (last homecoming game won was in 2013) our fans were pumped! Although there were moments when we could have been a little louder, all together we had a pretty hyped fan section!

The game had mixed reviews, depending on the grade of the people interviewed, the opinions on the game and the fan section varied. One freshman rated the game a 7 out of 10, saying that the fan section was fun with players jumping on the stands and cheering up the crowd but wishes the highland mascot would have done more. Her favorite part of the game was the cheerleader’s halftime show. Her biggest complaint was the timing of the game, it felt too early and didn’t seem the same as a night game in terms of excitement. When asking a senior boy and girl, their opinions were almost the opposite. They agreed that the mascot was not the best, but also felt that the fan section was lame and needed more cheering.
The notorious Musket game, Highland vs Central, is scheduled for Friday, October 9th at 5pm. When mentioned, everyone interviewed said they were looking forward more to the musket game than the homecoming, with statements such as “there is more fan interaction” and “Central vs Highland game is always the best”!
