Muslim woman in Congress

Rashida Tlaib is the mother of two boys, and the oldest among 14 children born to immigrant parents. Tlaib was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She attended and graduated from Southwestern High School. She went to Wayne University in Detroit and earned her bachelor’s degree there. She then earned her law degree from Western Michigan University. After that, she married Fayez Tlaib whom she later had two sons with.

In 2008 Tlaib won her race to be a State Representative. She became the first Muslim woman to serve in the Michigan Legislation. While being a state representative, Tlaib helped secure millions of dollars, for education, for people as well as seniors. She wrote laws to protect homeowners and stop thieves. After serving three terms in the legislature she couldn’t run for her seat again, because she had reached the term limit.

On January 3, 2019 Rashida Tlaib was sworn into Congress. She is the first Muslim American woman to serve in the House of Representatives. Tlaib chooses not to wear a headscarf, but she doesn’t let that stop her from committing to her religion.

Democrat Rashida said in her campaign biography that: “She is focused on getting more money for better education, free health clinics, after school programs for students and, programs for seniors.” Tlaib is trying to solve how the world views Muslims, and she tries to help her community. While in office, she opposed tax breaks for billionaires, and wealthy corporations, and forced the the state to fund causes such as helping students pay for college instead.

Tlaib has worked against campaigns such as, anti-Arab and anti- Muslim bigotry. She showed people that she isn’t scared to say what the issues in world are. Tlaib has earned respect from many people because she wants to help people and fight for them to get things that they need.

Minnesota weather

There has been fridge weather in the Midwest, specifically in Minnesota, during the past month. The wind chill temperature in the Midwest has reached around -30. The negative weather began around the week of January 28 and extended through February 1. The arctic cold has resulted in many with no homes to freeze to death in Chicago. According to NBC Chicago, 19 people have died in the blistering cold, many of whom were homeless.

There were closings of hundreds of schools across districts for days across the Midwest. Here in Minnesota, governor Tim Walz is not going to penalize school districts in the state by adding more school days to compensate for the school days lost, the week of January 28, during the fridge below zero temperatures. The cold broke records in many cities and states that week. According to Fox 9 News, it became the lowest temperatures recorded in Minnesota since 1994.

Although the governor of Minnesota decided to not add school days at the end of the school year, I asked some students around how they felt about school days being added. It has been a big topic for quite a while, especially since a few years ago, more school days were added at the end of the school year due to having too many snow days.

Tovi Yangh: Honestly I would rather have schools added at the end of the year if it is needed. I’d rather go to school when it’s warm than suffer in the cold walking to school or having to carry my jacket around because it’s too cold. Other than that, I don’t really mind with whatever that happens. If school days are added then I’ll go since I have to.

Emily St. Clair: I would hate it if school days were added. I don’t want to go to school in the summer especially since we don’t have air conditioner. No one would want to show up and be surrounded by a lot of students when it’s hot.

Vahue Thao: I think that adding days would be unfair because it wasn’t really our fault that we had snow days. Also, I think that kids won’t show up because maybe their families have already made plans for it already.

Dayna Baty: Honestly, it doesn’t really affect me but I think that school days shouldn’t be added no matter how many snow days there are. Personally, I’ve used those snow days to catch up on school work and I think they’re really helpful with just catching up on school.

I also interviewed many others who had the same views. Overall, students want their summer break to start early with no school days added. Many others also have stated that they are thankful that SPPS is doing a better job at calling snow days and early releases than they did a few years back.

Hopefully, next winter will be less dangerous, not just for students, but for everyone else.

Valentine’s Day history

Valentine’s Day has gone and passed, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a history lesson on it.

It started as a feast to honor saints and to celebrate romance. In the 18th century, it became less of a feast to celebrate saints and more of a day to give the people you loved chocolates, roses, and heart-shaped cards.

In the 19th century, hand-written cards were largely replaced with mass produced Valentine’s cards from companies. People also started giving keys to their valentine to show that they “unlocked their heart,” and they were also given to children to ward off epilepsy. The Orthodox and Lutheran are often the most to celebrate it.

The 1800s was when most companies started selling what we use today to celebrate: boxes of chocolates, roses, and cards with Cupids.

Around 190 million cards are sent in the United States, and that doesn’t include the millions that children in schools hand out to their classmates. It is a HUGE source for money in the country.

There’s also many movies and cartoons based around Valentine’s Day. The TV show Parks and Rec also made their own “Galentine’s Day,” which is a day to celebrate your female friends.

Valentine’s Day isn’t just a day for romance, it’s also meant to celebrate anyone you deem important in your life.

Chinese Lunar New Year

The Chinese Lunar New Year occurs every year around January or February and lasts for about 15 days. This year, the lunar new year will start on February 5th, lasting till the 19th. The Chinese calendar goes according to the moon and each year is represented by an animal.

The usage of animals originally came from the worship of animals, but there are also many legends that tell a story of a race between the animals that were ordered by the Jade Emperor. There are twelve animals that are, in order: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The zodiac animals repeats after twelve years, and this year is the last animal of the twelve: the pig. Each zodiac animal has their own traits, and some are more compatible with others while each has a zodiac animal it is not compatible with at all. People believe that the zodiac signs can determine your fortune, marriage, career, and many more.

On the last day, there is a huge festival celebrated called the Lantern Festival. To prepare for the Lantern Festival many children, through the celebrations, create colorful lanterns as a tradition that has been around for over 2,000 years. In the earlier years people would light lanterns as gifts and offerings for the gods to their heavenly place.

The Lantern Festival, also known as the Spring Festival, is mainly celebrated for a reunion with your family. Many people from all around the world come back to China to celebrate the new year. Not only do relatives visit their family but also their in-laws or maybe a boyfriend or girlfriend. Over many years there have been many different variations of lanterns. Different lanterns have different meanings to bring fortune to them.

There are many other activities that the Chinese do for their Lunar New Year, but before even celebrating the new year families will clean their houses, set up couplets (poems), and prepare for a great dinner feast. Foods that are normally eaten for the New Year’s celebration will each have a meaning to them. For example, fish is eaten to represent prosperity and when you eat long noodles you are not to bite them off because the noodle represents the length of your life.

Each day until the Lantern Festival, is a celebration of something. According to nationsonline.org, the first through the seventh day is the celebration of birthdays from the different zodiac animals. The eighth day is a completion day of reunion and praying to the Jade Emperor, and the ninth day is celebrating the Jade Emperor’s birthday. The tenth through the twelfth day is feasting, but the thirteenth day is to rest and and eat things that’ll help your dignstive system. The fourteenth day is the preparation day for the Lantern Festival, and last, but not least, the fifteenth day is the Lantern Festival celebration.

Presidents’ Day

Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February; Presidents’ Day 2019, occurred on Monday, February 18. George Washington was the first president of the U.S.A. His first term as president lasted from 1789 to 1793 and his second term as president lasted  from 1793 to 1797. Washington is often known as the “Father of the United States” and is one of the best known American politicians ever.

Washington’s Birthday was celebrated  first as a holiday in the District of Columbia in the 1880s, then it became an holiday in 1885. The holiday was originally celebrated, in 1971, on the anniversary of George Washington’s birth, on February 22. This holiday was moved to the third Monday in February later.

The idea behind the name change was to create a holiday that did not recognize a specific president, but rather celebrated the office of the presidency.

This holiday is known as “Washington’s Birthday,” but is best known as Presidents’ Day. Washington’s Birthday honors the first president of the U.S.A, and the life work of George Washington. We recognize George Washington in many ways on currency, statues, and portraits. George Washington inspires us to this day, particularly federal workers who uphold what he helped create.

2019 State of the Union Address

By: Daniela Fernandez

On February 5, 2019, President Trump gave his State of the Union Address. The State of the Union Address was originally supposed to be given on January 22, but was canceled because of the government shutdown.

This year’s speech was overshadowed by a series of exchanges between the President and the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Their series of exchanges consisted about when he was to give his speech. The President wanted to give his speech on January 29, but Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, made it clear that in order for him to give his speech, he must first be invited by Congress, and then only the Speaker of the House can call for a joint session between the chambers. Finally, they came to an agreement to have his speech after the government reopened according to CNN.

At this year’s State of the Union Address, President Trump discussed immigration, the economy, infrastructure, drug prices, national security, and governance according to CNN.

On the topic of immigration, the President claimed that his petition for the wall is justified because El Paso, Texas used to be a dangerous city with high crime rates, and that now with a wall in place, it has become one of the country’s safest city. According to CNN, who analyzed and reviewed data from the FBI and city law enforcement, while there was high violent crime in El Paso in 1993 it fell long before a wall was built in 2008-2009.

Next, the President discussed the economy. He claimed that there are more people working in the United States than ever before. He also claimed that 157 million are working. Again, according to CNN, who analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics this month, 156,694,000 are working. They also stated that compared to the population percentage, the number of people working is still lower than before the recession.

The President also discussed drug prices. He claimed that drug prices are too high for Americans to pay, and wants to work towards lowering them. He also claimed that because of his administration, drug prices where lower than they had been in 46 years in 2018. CNN analyzed the consumer price index for prescription drugs, and they found that while prices did drop 0.6%, which is that largest drop since 1973, the prices rose 3.2% later that year.

Last, the President discussed National Security. He made many claims on international relations such as reducing support for NATO. He also claimed that ISIS was defeated. While most of their territory was recaptured, they still have control over around 20 square miles according to US Central Command, General Joseph Votel. The President also made a call for international support.

This year’s speech brought a lot of scrutiny by the media, and political analysts, and a lot of controversy.

Lunar tetrad

On January 20 and 21, a full moon, Wolf Moon, Supermoon, and a total lunar eclipse took place.

In 2019, there will be 3 solar eclipses and 2 lunar eclipses. On January 20, the first full moon and first lunar eclipse happened.  The lunar eclipse is being called a Blood Moon because the sun Earth and moon line up and the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow making it a reddish color. A NASA scientist said, “The exact color that the moon appears depends on the amount of dust and clouds in the atmosphere” so it can appear more red depending what’s in the atmosphere.

During the Blood Moon, a meteorite hit the moon. It was very unexpected but according to Space.com that’s how the moon gets it craters.

There are 3 types of lunar eclipses, total, partial, and penumbral. The first lunar eclipse of the year was a total lunar eclipse meaning Earth’s shadow completely covered the moon. A Blood Moon will usually happen  twice every three years. However, it depends on the  number of total lunar eclipses during a year.

The Wolf Moon was named by some Native American tribes after wolves would howl loudly outside their villages, but this year’s Wolf Moon was also a Supermoon. A Supermoon is a full moon that is at the moon’s closest point to Earth.

There will be 6 eclipses in 2019, depending on where you live. There was a solar eclipse on January 5, and a lunar eclipse on January 20.  There will be a solar eclipse on July 2, and December 26. There’ll be a lunar eclipse on July 16. On November 11, there will be a transit of Mercury, meaning Mercury will directly pass between the Sun and another planet, and Mercury will appear as a black dot moving across the Sun.

2018-2019 U.S. Government shutdown: Things that are actually affected

A government shutdown happens when nonessential government offices can no longer remain open due to lack of funding. The lack of funding usually happens when there is a delay in the approval of the federal budget. The shutdown continues until parties can reach a compromise and a budget bill passes.

The last government shutdown, that began on December 22, 2018, is due to a disagreement, in the budget, for the President’s wall. Congress had offered President Trump $1.7 billion towards building his border wall, but he had a different amount in mind. He asked for $5.7 billion and when he was denied the money, he declared he’d be “proud to shutdown the government for border security.”

This will be the 21st government shut down since first one, after the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act was passed in 1976.

Even though some people probably didn’t even notice the inconvenience of the partial shut down, around 800,000 people lived without income.

When the shut down was announced, I expected to feel effects directly. Since I still saw police and got my mail everyday, I didn’t really think anything had actually changed because of it. But even though our mail still came, this didn’t mean that everything was just fine. Many things stopped running as usual, such as Homeland Security, the Environmental Protection Agency, and NASA.

Other things that had been affected by the government shut down were:

Airport security

During the shutdown, the airport workers who are responsible for screening passengers and their luggage, were out of work. The number of sick calls continuously rose, and more and more people quit their jobs all together given their lack of an income.

National parks

Some parks were shutdown, and others were still open. Some of the parks that remained open decided on a partial closure due to the fact that they were under staffed.

Public health and science

Inspections of chemical factories, power plants, water treatment plants and other industrial places stopped because the Environmental Protection Agency had to send home most of its employees in charge of inspecting pollution and making sure laws were followed.

Some government research labs had also been shut down, and its researchers were sent home. Funding for the research had been affected by the shut down as well.

Other services have been shut down, such as the Fish and Wildlife Service, National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Food inspection and financial aid

The Food and Drug Administration stopped its normal inspections of foods with a high risk of contamination.

Food assistance programs for women, children and Native Americans were still operating on the state level until the funding provided by the federal government runs out. After funds run out it will shut down too until the shutdown is officially over.

The Internal Revenue Service

Most IRS operations stopped. Only 12% of the employees were still working. In an effort to not interfere with annual tax returns, the White House said it would bring back the other IRS employees, but it was unclear if they had the authority to make that happen.

Law enforcement and immigration courts

Many workers from the F.B.I., Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Prisons, Customs and Border Protection, Coast Guard, the Secret Service and others, were out of work because of the shut down.

Even though immigration court was backlogged before, after the government announced the shutdown, the courts also shut down. No cases were being moved forward and people will have to continue to wait for their hearing.

With all these services and citizens being affected by the shutdown, it’s sad to think our government let it go on as long as it did. It lasted over a month and people were ready for it to be over.

The death of the mayors

Alejandro Aparicio, a newly sworn in mayor, of the Mexican town of Tlaxiaco, was killed on Tuesday, January 8, 2 hours after taking position as Mayor of Tlaxiaco. Two people died, and 3 other people were wounded. The death of Alejandro is being taken seriously, and a thorough investigation, for the man behind the murder of this horrific crime.

On Tuesday afternoon, Alejandro was on his way to City Hall, for a meeting with some of his colleagues after being declared mayor, when a man came and opened fire. Five people, including Alejandro, we’re rushed to the hospital, but by the time they arrived, Alejandro was pronounced dead. He suffered internal bleeding and a punctured right lung.

Tlaxiaco has been dealing with a serious problem of mayors being killed, for many years, and is becoming difficult for people to want to take a political position. At least 175 mayors or mayor elects have been killed between September 2017 and August 2018 .

Aparicio was the first mayor to be elected from Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador party. Oaxaca governor Alejandro Murat expressed his condolences on Twitter for the unjust murder, “I express my condolences to the family and the people of Tlaxiaco.” This is just a tragic event and the government is not taking it lightly.

Kerala protests

In Kerala, a state in southern India, a ban was put in place on women entering the Sabarimala temple for prayers last September. On January 1st, 2 women were the first to enter the temple in centuries, and as a result, it caused many violent protests.

The Supreme Court lifted the ban because they believed it discriminated against women, and they should be able to worship in the temple.  A spokesman said that the 2 women tried to enter the temple in December, but violent mobs blocked the temple doors. The names of the 2 women are, Bindu Ammini and Kankadurga, and they’re currently hiding from the mobs and are staying with their relatives.

The mobs got so bad that cops had to bring water cannons and tear gas to break it up. One of the protesters was a man that was in the BJP ( Bharatiya Janata Party). According to CNN, The BJP are trying to keep the ban, but the man was killed by protesters who threw stones at his head.

The 2 women got help from police to enter the temple, which may have also caused the violent riots. So far, the police have arrested 2 people, and 4 people were injured.

As many as five million women protesters took part in a peaceful protest. They created a “women wall” and extended their arms to show they’re support of gender equality. The women wall was 385 miles long and a civil servant said, “There were so many women and there wasn’t even space for women to extend arms. If they had extended their arms, the length of the wall would have increased so much that women would be falling in the Arabian Sea.”

According to CNN, the police have said they will continue to provide protection for women that want to enter the temple, and people that oppose their decision will have to go the Supreme Court later in the month.
