Have you ever wondered which animals are and aren’t endangered? The answer to that is very long.

Let’s start with what an endangered animal is before this article gets started. An endangered animal is, according to wonderopolis, an animal that is in danger of going extinct. There are sadly so many animals that are becoming endangered by humans. We are destroying their habitats, and their homes. How do you think you would feel if someone was taking away your home because they needed land to build apartments and cities for themselves?

The list of endangered animals goes on and on. From African wolf dogs, to green turtles, to many more. The list goes on and on, on the World Wildlife website about the different types of animals that are endangered.

The Amur leopard is one of the more critical animals. An Amur leopard is commonly found in a forest in Asia. These leopards are endangered because they are being taken for their gorgeous fur, of which is spotted. For more information about the Amur leopard, please visit: Mnzoo.com or World wildlife.com

Another animal that is in critical danger is the black rhino. A black rhino is going extinct because hunters are hunting them for their horns, which have an ivory color. This ivory color can be sold on the black market. As well as their horns, the rhinos habitat is slowly dwindling away. You can actually help these rhinos. You can raise awareness on World Rhino Day. Just by raising awareness of this issue can cause local donors to donate money for veterinary care. This money can also help to bring education of what hunting is doing to their population. The rhinos populations is already very small. For more information about the black rhino, please visit: Animalplanet.com

The Bornean orangutan is another of the of the more critically endangered animals. These orangutan’s habitat is becoming smaller and smaller due to deforestation and cleaning the land for plantations. The logging of trees is affecting the orangutans because they spend almost all of their time in the trees. Another thing is that the smoke of fires confusing them, which leads to them becoming very susceptible to death because their habitat is being burned down. You can help young infants that have been taking from their mother by adopting a little orangutan. It’s only $65 a year. Please visit Theorangutanproject.org for more information.

Lastly, the Cross River gorilla is critically endangered. There is about 300 individuals that remain. This gorilla is the most endangered African ape as of 2013. These gorillas are endangered because of hunters wanting to hunt and trade their meats. For more information, please visit: Birdlife.org

As you can see, all of these, and other animals, are endangered because of hunters and humans caring more about profits than these poor animals.

On Sunday, March 10, a tragedy occurred in Ethiopia that impacted 35 countries. A Sunday morning flight became a tragedy, within minutes, when a Boeing 737 Max 8, carrying 157 people en route to Nairobi, Kenya, crashed 6 minutes after takeoff from Bole International Airport, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, killing all 157 passengers and crew members onboard.

The plane took off at 8:38AM local time, and air traffic control lost contact with the flight at 8:44AM. The plane crashed in Bishoftu, a town 40 miles southeast from Ethiopia’s capital city. According to CNN, The victims came from 35 different nationalities from all over the world. Thirty-two Kenyans, seventeen Ethiopians, eighteen Canadians, eight Americans and seven French are just 5 of of the 35 different nationalities affected. Daylight saving time

This year, Daylight Saving Time (DST) fell on March 10, 2019. By moving the clock ahead one hour we are able to make a better use of daylight. During the summer the sunlight is out for a longer amount of time than in the winter. Each country/region has its own time/date to change its time. People who live near the equator don’t have to change their time because in that area there is 12 hours during the day and 12 hours during the night.

According to webexhibits.org there has been a poll made indicating that people in the United States believe that daylight saving is because there is more sunlight in the evenings during the summer. Since there is more sunlight during the evening there is more time to enjoy the long day and to have fun.

Daylight saving may conserve energy, because during daylight saving the energy we use is cut by a very small yet significant amount of energy. About one percent of energy is lost a day, because there is less electricity/lights that are needed during the day. When electricity for light is used, it’s mainly during the night when people are about to sleep, but since evenings have more sunlight, there is a smaller amount of electricity needed to be used.

If you hate daylight saving time, no worries, the end will come on November 3, 2019. After daylight saving time ends, you will be able to move the clock back one hour. Usually, the time changes at 2A.M. whether or not going forward one hour or backwards one hour.

One positive you can get out of daylight saving is having more time to enjoy fun things, and a positive for the end of daylight saving is that you get more sleep.

Paul Manafort: Multiple sentences overview

Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s campaign manager and consultant, has been officially charged with multiple counts of tax and bank fraud. Manafort worked as a Republican party campaign consultant, and joined Donald Trump’s campaign team in 2016 (he was the campaign chairman from June to August 2016).

Manafort was officially convicted in August 2018, on eight charges (all of which relates to tax and bank fraud) in the Eastern District of Virginia. He was also charged on ten other counts, but the judge declared a mistrial.

Later, in the DC District Court, Manafort pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to defraud the United States. He also pleaded guilty to witness tampering.

On November 26, 2018, Robert Mueller released a statement saying that Manafort violated his plea deal by lying to investigators. In the DC District Court, Judge Amy Berman Jackson officially voided the plea deal, so Mueller advised the Virginia court to charge Manafort and have him serve 19 and a half years to 24 years in prison.

On March 7, 2019, Judge T.S. Ellis called Mueller’s sentencing guideline “excessive,” and sentenced Manafort to only 47 months in prison. Six days later, Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort to an additional 43 months in prison.

Only minutes after this sentencing, New York state prosecutors charged Manafort with sixteen state felonies. This will almost double his sentence, making him serve 7 ½ years instead of 47 months.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is a day we take every year to celebrate all the women in the world and their achievements. It’s also a day where people raise awareness of the bias women face, and fight for equality for all. Every year International Women’s Day takes place on March 8.

According to International Women’s Day, the first International Women’s Day took place on March 19, 1911. It was first celebrated by Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Denmark. This happened after an agreement made the previous year in Copenhagen after Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day.

On the last Sunday in February, 1913, women in Russia celebrated International Women’s Day to support peace before World War I started. In 1913 it was also decided to move International Women’s Day to March 8.

On March 8, 1914, in London, and other places across Europe, there were rallies to stop the war and unite all women. In London there was a rally from Bow to Trafalgar Square were people supported the women’s suffrage movement.

In 1917, the Czar of Russia granted women the right to vote. This happened after they put together a strike for “bread and peace” after over 2 million Russians were killed in World War I. The women kept striking for 4 more days. Many people opposed them, such as political leaders. The Czar forced the provisional Government to give women the right to vote.

The UN first started celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975. Then two years later, in December of 1977, the General Assembly officially created a resolution for a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. This resolution states that member states (countries that are part of the UN) can celebrate International Women’s Day on any day that works for them based on their cultures.

Today, International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world in many different ways. The International Women’s Day website recommends many ways to celebrate the day by making a difference. They tell people to identify their goals, identify their audience, and then decide what you can do; just a few of the ways they suggest are their downloadable selfie cards, social cards, and posters. You can also order event packs, which help you run a women’s day event.

The International Women’s Day also tells readers about the #BalanceforBetter tag. Social media is a great way to spread awareness of inequalities and educate others. Something as simple as a Women’s Day filter on Snapchat can inspire others to learn and remind people of the day’s significance. If you want to make a difference, use tags including the #BalanceforBetter and #InternationalWomensDay tags, or simply spread the word.

Vietnam Summit

Less than a month ago, the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, met for a second time to discuss economic sanctions and nuclear weapons. The first time the two met, they met in Singapore. This time, the pair traveled to the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, to talk. Trump is the first American president to meet a North Korean head of state.

The first time the two talked was on June 12, in the summer of 2018. They met in Singapore and discussed North Korea’s nuclear program. Trump said the talks went well and there has been less tension, but there has yet to be any real progress.

The summit started at 6:30PM Vietnam time, which is exactly 12 hours ahead of East Coast time. The next morning, at 9:00AM, Trump and Kim met privately to talk.

After their private meeting was done, the two went to a large meeting with several top aides from each country. This meeting carried into a working lunch that featured the same people as the meeting.

At around 2PM, Trump and Kim signed an agreement. After the signing, a press conference was held that both leaders attended. The two then separated until 7PM, when they met again for a formal dinner.

The results of the summit weren’t what Trump claimed they were, but they weren’t nothing. Trump claimed North Korea would be fully denuclearized, which they are not, but the tensions have eased and North Korea and the US are no longer threatening war.

North Korea also released American hostages ahead of the summit, which is good, and the US has promised to stop “provocative” military drills with South Korea.

North Korea also promised to start to denuclearize, but they could go back on that at any time. The results weren’t massive but they were a start.

Jussie Smollett

Jussie Smollett was born on June 21, 1982, and is an American actor and singer. Jussie Smollett grew a big following after appearing on the famous show Empire. He plays Jamal Lyon.

On the night of January 29, 2019, Jussie Smollett tells the police that at around 2 a.m. what he believed were two white males, wearing masks and a MAGA (make America great again) hat, had attacked him. According to Smollett, the two men hurled racial and homophobic slurs at him. They then tied a rope around his neck and poured a chemical substance on him.

Smollett says he went home and one of his close associates had to call and tell the police 40 minutes after the incident had occurred. Sources say that Smollett was hesitant to call the police because of his status.

After the attack was shared to different media outlets, there were a lot of A-list celebrities that offered their support to Jussie Smollett.

After the investigation, police noticed that some things that Jussie was doing after the incident were odd. For example, the night of the attack, Smollett said that he had broken ribs, two days later he was seen at a concert dancing and jumping. It didn’t make sense as to why someone who had broken ribs would hold a concert.

On February 1, Jussie released his first public appearance on Good Morning America, he said, “Let me starts off by saying that I’m O.K. My body is strong but my soul is stronger.”

During the interview, people noticed how Smollett was getting defensive when Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts asked why didn’t he give the police his phone. Smollett said he had personal pictures and information that he didn’t want the police to see. People thought that if you are innocent, and have nothing to hide, you’ll just give the police your phone.

A few weeks after the incident, it came out that police think that Smollett hired two brothers to stage the attack, and the reason why he did this was because he wasn’t getting paid enough. For his role on the show Empire, he only gets paid $20,000 an episode and he thought that wasn’t enough, so he thought that by staging this attack, he would get a raise and get donations for the hate crime that happened to him.

A lot of people were hurt that he could have lied about a situation like this, feeling that he’s making it harder for people of color to come out in the future and tell their hate crime stories.

Snow storms on the West Coast!

The U.S. has been going through a rough winter so far this year. With the polar vortex hitting the Midwest in late January, and the heavy snow storms on the Northern Eastern coast, the newest area to be affected with this snow storm is the West Coast. Squaw Valley, in California, had its snowiest month on record, according to The Guardian. Snow was also seen falling near Pasadena and West Hollywood.

More snowfalls have also took their tolls in areas in Oregon.

Some of the United States presidential candidates running in 2020

The United States is currently in the third year of Donald Trump’s presidency. This means that next year 2020) is the next election for United State’s president. So far, there are a handful of candidates running for office.

Today, I will be listing a couple candidates and their backgrounds from both of the political parties.

Elizabeth Warren is one of the democratic candidates for the next presidency. She was formerly a Harvard law professor in Massachusetts. She is specifically known for advocating for more regulations on Wall Street and other big corporations.

Another candidate for office is democratic, New Jersey, U.S. Senator, Cory Booker. He was a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School. He was elected as mayor of Newark, New Jersey, in 2006, serving until he was elected to the Senate, and assumed office, in 2013.

One of the republican candidates running for office in 2020 is the former governor of Massachusetts, Bill Weld. His beliefs are very libertarian based (he was a libertarian nominee for Vice president in 2016). Even though he is running on the republican side of the political spectrum, he believes in LGBTQ rights along with being pro-choice.

Another one of the republican candidates running is the President, Donald Trump, himself. He will try to be re-elected for office in 2020.  According to the Washington Post, he was spending money on 2020 efforts as early as Nov. 24, 2016. Trump is also confident he will be re-elected, depsite his constant low approval ratings.

Pollution in our oceans – Part 1 in a multi-part series about the environment

By Delaney Sis and Na’Riyah Johnson

Have you ever wondered how much plastic is actually in the ocean?

Plastic doesn’t decompose, like other wastes, and according to theoceancleanup.com, there are 5 different offshore areas that have accumulated 1.15 to 2.41 million tons of plastic. These areas of plastic are called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). These patches are the largest accumulated areas ranging from Hawaii and California. The GPGP covers 1.6 million square kilometers. That’s about twice the size of Texas and three times the size of France.

You may be asking why we should care; well according to the National Ocean Service website, 700 different marine species encounter debris. Sadly, 92% of the debris these species come across are plastic. Only 17% of the debris are on the list of threatened animals. There is 180x more plastic than marine life. Also, marine life can get entangled.

Some ways that debris enter water are from the rain and winds. For example, when you leave a water bottle on the ground and it rains, the rain water will carry it to the sewer, and it ends up in our rivers, streams, and lakes.

Some ways you can help with this issue is by using less plastic, recycling more, and helping with cleaning/volunteering or participating in shore cleanups.

Some other ways that you can help with this issue is by putting trash into designated areas. You can also help by using no plastic straws or plastic cups.

Starbucks was the business that first announced they were moving from plastic straws, to more compostable straws. You may be wondering why, well 4% of the plastic in the ocean is made up of straws. An average person uses 1.6 straw a day. This mean that 25,000 people have stopped using straws. For more information about plastic straws, please visit: https://squareup.com/townsquare/why-plastic-straws-are-being-banned
