Places to visit in and near Saint Paul

Saint Paul, known as the ‘Twin Cities’ with the city of Minneapolis, is the state capital of Minnesota. Saint Paul is known for many attractions such as the museums, parks, malls, and theaters. In this article I will be mentioning all of the central attractions I listed here.

  1. Science Museum of Minnesota

The Science Museum of Minnesota is located at 120 W Kellogg Blvd, St Paul, MN 55102, and is focused on educating people on history, tech, science, and mathematics. It has many galleries like an exhibit gallery, permanent galleries, a Science House with zero carbon emissions, and an Omnitheater. It was founded in 1907, and is located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It’s a nonprofit institution that’s supported by its volunteers.

  • Como Park Zoo & Conservatory

The Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is located in Como Park at 1225 Estabrook Drive, Saint Paul, Minnesota. Everything is owned by Saint Paul, and the zoo was built on November 7,1915 and founded by a German man named Frederick Nussbaumer. The attractions are not just the zoo and conservatory, there is an amusement park, a carousel, Lake Como, a golf course, a pool and more. As of March 2023, reservations are no longer needed for the most part.

  • Mall of America

And of course, the Mall of America. Not only is it the largest and most popular shopping mall in America, it has an average of 40 million visitors a year and is located fifteen minutes from downtown Minneapolis in Bloomington. Not only are there so many great shops and places to eat, since it opened its doors in 1992, it’s monopolized retail and has become the leader in entertainment and shopping.

  • Ordway Center for The Performing Arts

The Ordway Center is in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota, and is home to Broadway musicals, opera, cultural performers, orchestra, and local musicals. It’s all thanks to a lady named Sarah Prudence Ordway, who in 1908, dreamt up a “European-style concert hall” that we now today call the Ordway Center. You can get tickets anywhere from twelve dollars to fifty.

Fun things to do during fall

By: Cleo Newton

Image created with Wonder

There are plenty of things to do during fall like, bake, make art, go camping and more. Here are some activities I think would be fun to do.

Have you ever been in a corn maze before? If not, then here are some mazes in Minnesota you could visit.

One maze, from an article from ‘Family Fun Twin Cities’, that stood out to me was Afton Apple Orchard’s Corn Maze. The main maze here is 15 acres, and for each year, they incorporate a different theme into the maze. If the big maze is too hard for you, or if you want to do a maze that’s better for kids, they have a couple smaller mazes. They have a straw-bale maze, a “No Left Turn” maze, and a Garden hose maze too.

For those who are 2 years old and under, the admission fee is free, kids ages 3-10 cost $10 and must be accompanied by an adult, 11-year-olds and adults cost $12.00.

A few other corn mazes available in Minnesota are, Sever’s Corn Maze, Fresh Acres Corn Maze, and one at Pearson Family Farm.

If you like arts and crafts, here are some fun and easy crafts you can do. One way to make a splatter paint tree is to drop a drop of paint onto the paper then blow on it to create branches. Take an old or unused toothbrush and dip it in tempera paint, then flick onto the branches of the tree to create leaves.

Another craft you can make is the leaf lamp.  It’s really simple and easy, you use mod podge to glue leaves to the outside of a glass jar, then you put a small candle on the inside of the jar and light it.

One last fun thing you can do during fall is baking. A few fall foods from Southernliving.com include: pumpkin bread, apple pie, apple bread, corn bread, and apple cinnamon bread.

After reading this, I hope you guys found some new things you can do this fall. Of course, if you can’t do some of these, you can always rake up some leaves in your yard and jump in it, or take a walk around your neighborhood to admire the falling leaves and trees. I hope you guys have a great fall!

How to manage your time wisely

With all the chaos at the end of the quarter and the start of a new quarter, it’s really easy to fall behind. Especially now when we have a lot of stuff to distract us. Our phones, social media, and video games are only some of those distractions, so here are some ways we can utilize our time and hopefully stop procrastinating.

Setting Goals

  • Set goals to motivate yourself – Some ways you could start doing that is creating a timeline that you have to get your work done by and going from there. Have little rewards (like a snack every twenty minutes of studying) to motivate yourself with, and adjust your goals if deemed necessary.
  • Set SMART goals – Set Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely goals. Remember to take a break if necessary.

Organizing Yourself

  • Build a routine – Remember, consistency over perfection. This applies to most things, including studying. Carving out time and making studying a habit will leave less room to procrastinate and make you more productive.
  • Balance is key – Avoid stretching yourself too thin and spending too much time studying. Spend time with the people you care about, exercise, read, journal, take a nap. After recharging your batteries, your brain will be more relaxed and willing to learn.

Study Methods

  • “Chunking” – Break big tasks into smaller tasks. Use a timer and set a time you know you can focus long enough for, then take a break after. Repeat.
  • “Eat your frog” –  Do the most challenging tasks early in the morning so the rest of your day feels stress free. Benefits of doing this is getting the most difficult task out of the way will make the rest seem easy,
  • Use the internet to your advantage – Websites and apps like Khan Academy, Guides.co, and Squareknot can help you delve deeper into the subject matter and understand it more. And they’re all free.
  • Revising Method – Once you finish taking notes for a particular subject, look over it at least once, revise it again the next day, revise again after three days, then revise it again after a week. This is how you help your brain remember information.

Planning Ahead

And finally, how do you plan ahead so you don’t fall behind? Some methods could be knowing yourself and your study habits so you can figure out what to work on, evaluate your schedule, finish something before it’s due so you have time to do other stuff, and always think ahead.

Best places to play basketball around the St. Paul area

By: Jafar Abdi

Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the country, with this fame comes the creation of many different places to play basketball. Whether it be an outdoor park or a gym there are many different places to play this sport. But which ones are the best? Let’s get into it!

#1 YMCA Midway: The Y is a gym franchise found all over the country with many different locations. It usually contains a pool, weight-lifting area, a basketball court, and many other places to get active. The YMCA I will be talking about is the Midway location. The gym is on the upper floor and is only 1 court, it has 2 rims and many benches dotted around the floor. The hoops are single rim, but regulation size and height. It’s open from 7 AM-5 PM on the weekends but 5 AM-9 PM on the weekdays. It isn’t usually too packed during the school year, but with the addition of summer memberships, it can get filled with younger kids during the break. It earns 7/10 from me.

#2 YMCA East-Side: The YMCA gets featured again? Yes, and I am here to review it. The YMCA has multiple locations around the area so I am going to do it again. I’ve already gone through the motions and you must know what the Y is about, so let’s actually review the court. The hours are the same as the Midway location, but the court is different. It has 6 rims: the 2 regulation ones and 2 more 9ft rims on either side. The traffic is a bit different since there is no summer membership, but it’s more popular than its Midway counterpart throughout the year. It also has a laminated wooden court, different from the other YMCA. It earns 8/10 from me.

#3 Hamline Park: This will be the only outdoor court I will be reviewing and also the only park on the list so it is a bit unique. Hamline Park takes up a whole entire city block, featuring a soccer court, a playground, a jungle gym, and a blacktop which is the only thing we are reviewing today. It is a typical outdoor court with 2 hoops regulation height and dimensions but double-rimmed. It is placed in a pretty central location but still doesn’t get too much traffic; the only regulars are pretty much people who live close by. It is a bit old with the 3-pt line faded out on either side but for an outdoor park that’s pretty normal. It earns 6/10 from me.

What it’s like to have birds as pets

By: Alex Martinez

(Taken at home)

Birds are fascinating animals; there are many different types of birds, including parrots, budgerigars (budgies), owls, finches, blue jays, and many others.

Budgies are a very unique type of bird. Budgies, or budgerigars, are small, long-tailed, seed-eating parrots. Naturally, the species is green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back, and wings.

What is it like to have one of these types of birds as pets? More specifically budgies. Budgies are gentle and docile birds. Budgies are native to Australia’s forest, grassland, and shrub-land habitats, where they roam in flocks and forage for food. These cute little parrots make wonderful companions and are typically docile and simple to train, especially if acquired at a young age.

Budgies are big on brains and personality. Many have been taught to whistle tunes and talk, and are just as intelligent as some larger bird species. A properly trained and tamed Budgie can even imitate human speech.

Having budgies in pairs is recommended to keep each other company but they may not bond as much or well with the owner. Budgies are fun pets as they’re very curious animals and the smallest things you do catch their attention.

Keeping budgies as pets can be very messy and they can be very loud. Taking care of budgies isn’t necessarily that hard, but their food and water needs to be changed many times a day because it could get dirty quite a lot. Not changing and cleaning their food and water constantly could affect their health as they are sensitive little creatures.

It is good for budgies to be out of their cage every once in a while because, like many other pets, they need exercise to stay healthy. Budgies are good at hiding their illnesses, and it’s sometimes hard to notice when they’re sick and asking for help. However, keeping budgies in a safe environment will lead them to be happier and more energetic.

Budgies are wonderful pets and would never fail to lighten up your day with their cheerful chirps. These amazing little creatures will most definitely keep you entertained, as they’re fun and intelligent animals.

Why you should try to meditate

By: Jefferson Palma

*Note: This article contains the thoughts and opinions of the author and should not be used in place of medical advice

Meditating is a quick way to reduce stress on a busy day or when you’re tense, worried, and anxious. It’s a reset button on your mind and it could improve your day using such a little amount of time.

It doesn’t need any specific equipment or anything at all, and you can do it basically anywhere: in the bus, in a train, or when you’re in class and the teacher is late. It’s simple, quick, and effective.

Meditation is a complementary medicine that can relieve the mind and help it be relaxed at a deeper level. It could alleviate symptoms from specific medical conditions especially the ones that could worsen from stress.

Some researchers argue that there’s no conclusion to draw about the health benefits, but there’s some scientific evidence that supports the health benefits of meditating.

There are endless types of meditations that you could try but I’ll provide 3 examples to start off.

Yoga is a common practice used for thousands of years. It involves physical movement, breathing exercises, and concentration to calm the mind and body. It can build up flexibility, strength, endurance, and physical well-being.

Another good one is mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation flourishes your natural curiosity about the work of your brain. It helps reduce all the running thoughts crammed into your brain by approaching your moments as momentous and being more mindful by living in the present.

Mantra meditation will be the last example. Mantra meditation is when you repeat a word or a phrase repetitively in your head. Although it requires more focus, it can reduce wandering thoughts and increase more focus.

The earliest documents of meditation can go as far back as 1500 BC in India. It is a practice that ancient people and modern people have been using. There are a variety of mediation techniques that you can find best for yourself and endless ways of exploring it.

Tips for studying

By: Aliana Romo

Using time wisely during school is hard for many students, myself included. Although there’s many ways to work around pocrationation and bad work habits.

One of my favorite ways to avoid procrastinating is to study somewhere besides my house. This is especially for homework and outside school assignments. It’s easier to get distracted by phones and other objects around. Some of my favorite places to go and study are the library, outdoors or a local coffee shop. Some of these places can get a little loud, for example a coffee shop or studying outside at a park can be busy at times. Although with headphones and concentration it can be easy to stay on task. Picking a good study location is key to learning more about yourself and your learning qualities.

Another way to stay focused is to eliminate distractions. This can easily be to remove electronics such as phones, headphones, shows, etc. Many people get distracted by cell phones and it’s one of the worst distractions there is. It’s easy to lose focus quickly whether it’s by a notification or just wanting to be on your phone. Some ways to eliminate electronics from the area is to power off your phone, leave it in another room or to put it on do not disturb.

Taking out headphones or pausing any background noise like a movie or music can also help, even though for some people having music helps them concentrate. ‘Medical News Today’ says that “Music may help reduce stress, improve some aspects of memory, and improve cognitive function, which may all help with concentration and focus when studying.” The article also says that it can suggest the opposite too, causing distractions and getting lost in thought.

An additional way to stay on task is not to overwork yourself. It’s important to take breaks at points and revisit the subject later. Ways to take breaks is to go on a short walk or give yourself 10-15 minutes of relaxing. This can be hard to do if after the end of the break you’re feeling unproductive, although it’s important to remember that the main goal is to finish the work.

Setting goals often helps people finish homework and assignments more quickly. This is by setting achievable goals and focusing on finishing. This helps to concentrate on the work and getting it done, which helps to get motivation to finish.

Lastly, besides assignments outside of school it’s important to use time wisely in school and get work done then. Many times students are more distracted in school because of friends, being tired, and many other things. It’s also important to utilize help when needed; teachers are there to help you understand things. It’s good to ask questions when confused to make sure that you understand the assignment and topic. This can make things a lot less stressful and easier. To get rid of distractions while at school, the other tips still come into place. This means to stop talking with friends, avoid going on your phone and concentrating on the work.

Studying is about being able to figure out what tips help yourself more. What works for other people may not work for you.

Best activities to do on the lake

By: Sophie Johnson

Image created with Wonder

Last weekend I spent countless hours on the lake and did so many fun activities. Some of these include: tubing, scuba diving, fishing and more.

The first activity that I love to do on a lake is tubing. Tubing is one of the most thrilling and exciting activities and makes for a great adrenaline rush. Up at the lake I went to, I went on two different kinds of tubes.

We have a hot dog tube that looks like a hot dog on a bun and you sit three people in a row one in front of the other. This tube is significantly harder to stay on than the other one I rode because when the boat turns, everyone has to lean the opposite direction. I rate this tubing experience a 8/10.

The next tube was a seated one that holds up to 5 people. I only rode it with 3 people at one time. This one felt slightly safer and was more like a couch on water. I rate this tube a 10/10 because it can go very fast and is less painful if you fall off.

Another fun and exciting activity to do on a lake is fishing. The fishing that I did was not very successful because no fish were biting, but it is still a cool skill to learn and do when you are on a lake.

The last activity is scuba diving. I enjoy scuba diving because you never know what you will find at the bottom of a lake. Sometimes the water can get a little murky and gross, but that can just add to the challenge of finding anything.

These activities are just a few of the things that I like to do on the water during the spring and the summer, but they make that time on the beach so much more enjoyable.

Tips to deal with writer’s block

By: Bijou Kruszka

Image created with Wonder

Picture this: you’re a student in journalism class. Your article pitch for the week is due, and you have no idea what to write. You stare at the Schoology submission spot, but not a single idea pops into your head. So, you turn to your classmates, and ask them what you should write about. One of them replies “Write an article about writer’s block.” And, while it was intended as a joke, you have literally nothing else, so you go with it. So, here we are. Please enjoy my tips for dealing with writer’s block.

#1: Ask people for prompts

As alluded to in my intro, sometimes the best way to deal with writer’s block is to ask others for ideas. Often writer’s block will come because you’re limited to your own brain. By confiding with others, you can open yourself up to a variety of ideas, many you would have never once thought of. Often, people may be very vague or specific, which allows for a lot of creative range as well.

For example, one time a friend told me to write a short story ending with the word “grape-tastic,” and no other criteria. I ended up writing a strangely tragic story about a poor grape farmer, barely able to feed his two children. I never would have gotten there without “grape-tastic.” Needless to say, asking others for prompts is often a great way to inspire you. Just make sure that if you use their idea, you thank them. (Thank you to Trump Vang for the article idea).

#2: Look for ideas on the internet

The internet is a vast resource for all sorts of things, and writing is certainly no exception. There are countless social media accounts dedicated to posting prompts, which can also lead you to a community of writers. There are also plenty of online generators for all sorts of ideas. There are some that generate ideas for plots, characters, settings, and so much more. You can even ask ChatGPT for ideas, though you should never use it to create original writing.

#3: Read other people’s writing

Sometimes, one of the best ways to help your own writing is to invest yourself in other people’s writing. You can encounter new stories, which can freshen your perspective. You can notice stylistic and narrative choices that inspire you to change the way you’ve been writing.

More importantly, you will never improve if you keep doing the same thing over and over again. By reading the work of others, you can rework your current perspective and improve facets of your writing you didn’t even know needed improving.

#4: Take breaks and do other things

This will seem counterintuitive, but the absolute best way to deal with writer’s block is to stop writing. Forcing yourself to stare at a blank sheet of paper or blinking cursor for hours will only frustrate you and encourage you to stop writing. What you need to do is set your pencil down, stand up, and go do something else. Go on a walk, have fun with friends, play a game, watch a show, do anything.

The only way someone can be inspired is if they do things that inspire them. Maybe on a walk, you’ll encounter a beautiful flower that inspires you to write poetry. Maybe you watch the news, and get inspired to write an article about some injustices you witness. No matter what inspires you, you’re never going to find it staring at an empty void. So, go experience life. Then, come back and write about it.

Summer jobs

By: Greta Johnson

Photo by Artem Podrez on Pexels.com

Summer jobs are an important part of making money as a teenager. Most people in high school get a job for the summer to make money to spend and save.

If you are 14 or 15 you cannot work past 7:30PM, but if you’re 16 or older you’re free to work as late as you like.

Jobs in fast food and food service are easier to get and will hire you for the summer. Usual pay is minimum wage or about 11 to 15 dollars an hour. Some jobs in food service you will also receive tips that depend on the restaurant, but tips can range from 2-20 extra dollars per hour.

If you don’t want to work a traditional job or are too busy to get one, another good option is yard work. Many people don’t like to mow or weed wack or garden and will pay a good amount of money to you if you do it for them. It’s a good side hustle, or summer job, and it doesn’t take up a ton of your time. Self employed jobs like this are great for teenagers or younger people because it’s hard to find work at a younger age, lots of businesses won’t hire you if you’re under 16. With jobs like yard work, mowing and babysitting, all you have to do is make an agreement with whoever you’re doing the work for in regards to pay. This cuts out the issue of labor laws and getting hired.

The first challenge with getting a job is actually getting hired. Most of the time there’s at least a couple candidates and when you’re younger, companies and businesses are less likely to hire you. This is where a resumé would come in. A resumé is usually a paper about your information, skills, experience and previous employment. A résumé is important to the hiring process because it shows your possible employer that you are serious about getting this job.
