Evening High School (Night school)

Evening High School is an alternative educational program designed to provide students with learning experiences in order to complete their required course credits to graduate.  According to the SPPS website, “Evening High School is designed to give students who are behind in credits for graduation the chance to make up those credits.

Students must meet one of twelve criteria in order to attend Evening High School.  Most students qualify due to lack of credits needed towards graduation.”

Classes are offered at two sites: East Side Learning Hub @ Harding, 1526 Sixth St E, 55106 and Gordon Parks HS, 1212 University Ave W, 55104.

Classes meet at Eastside Learning Hub@Harding from 3:00pm – 4:30pm and 4:35pm – 6:05pm.  Classes at Gordon Parks HS are scheduled from 3:30pm – 5:00pm and 5:30pm – 7:00pm.

EHS ( Evening High School) also provides a light snack between 5:00pm – 5:30pm. The classes are really easy and simple. The good thing is that you don’t have night school on Fridays.

To be able to attend Evening high school you need to be 16 years old. For night school, you are only able to miss 2 days; if you miss more than 2 then you will be dropped from the class. Some of the classes you are able to take are: English, Math, Social Studies. For each class you take you earn 1 credit.

Movie review: Captain America Civil War

I recently saw the movie Captain America Civil War.

This movie is about how Captain America (Chris Evans) leads a newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to defend and protect humanity. But after another altercation involving the team, government pressure leads to install a system of accountability for the Avengers, when the actions of the team results in some collateral damage.

The new decision divides the members of the Avengers, resulting in two teams—one team led by Captain America (Chris Evans) and his goal for the Avengers to remain free to defend and protect humanity without any government interference, and the other team led by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) who strongly disagrees and supports oversight.

As the debate escalates it leads to an all-out feud with the others members of the Avengers, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side to be on, and the others follow Tony Stark’s shocking decision to support government.

Overall, the movie was great. On a scale from 1-10 I would give it a 8.5 because it was in 3D and it was filled with nonstop action, and fun. This is a must see movie.

I recommend this film to people who like action movies and super hero movies.

Movie Review: The 5th Wave

I recently saw the movie The 5th Wave at Regal Brooklyn Center Stadium 20.

The movie is about how the human race stands on the brink of extinction as a series of alien attacks decimate the planet, causing earthquakes, tsunamis and disease. Separated from her family, Ohio teenager Cassie Sullivan (Chloë Grace Moretz) will do whatever it takes to reunite with her brother Sam. Fate leads her to form an alliance with Evan Walker (Alex Roe), a mysterious young man who may be her last hope. Forced to trust each other, Cassie and Evan fight for survival during the fifth assault from the invaders.

Overall, the movie was good. On a scale from 1-10 I give it a 7.3 because it has slow parts and is sort of boring in some parts, and sometimes you don’t know what is happening in the film. There are sad parts too, but overall it’s a good film.

I recommend this film to people who like action movies.

Movie review

I recently saw the movie The Forest at Regal Brooklyn Center Stadium 20.

The movie is about a girl who goes to Japan after her twin sister disappears. Sara (Natalie Dormer) becomes determined to find out what happened to her sister. Sara’s investigation leads her to the legendary Aokigahara Forest (suicide forest), located at the base of Mount Fuji. Accompanied by expatriate Aiden, she enters the mysterious wilderness after being warned to “stay on the path.” Her investigation brings her into a dark world where the angry and tormented souls of the dead prey on those who dare to explore the forest.

Overall, it’s a good movie. On a scale from 1-10 I give it a 8.5 because it has slow parts and is sort of boring in some parts but overall it’s a great film filled with scary scenes that will make you jump.

I recommend this film to people who like paranormal movies.

Best music apps

In an effort to find out how to best listen to music on a phone, I researched the top two best music apps for the iPhone and Android phones.

The 1st app I found for Android is Google Play Music. The pros of the app are:

  • Being able to upload your music
  • You can save your online music for offline play

And the cons are:

  • It focuses more on its online content than your offline content, so if you’re looking for something that’s solely for offline content you’ll want to look elsewhere

The 2nd app I looked at is Soundcloud for both the iPhone and Android. The pros of the app are:

  • You have the option of either uploading an already recorded audio, or recording it on the spot
  • There are NO LIMITS to file sizes
  • There are tons of music and artists available

And the cons are:

  • That you can’t play the songs offline
  • That some of the songs that you look for won’t sound like the original

The best app I found for the iPhone and Android is Spotify. The pros are:

  • That it’s free
  • You can listen to popular artists

The cons are:

  • That you have to put up with ads on your screen and audio commercials between songs
  • The cost to get Premium varies from $1-10

Movie review

I recently saw the new movie The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 at the Theatres at Mall of America with my sisters.

When I was watching the movie it was a little slow in parts but other wise it was a pretty interesting film.

The movie was about how Katniss is leading the rebels to the Capitol aiming to kill President Snow. The Gamemakers have rigged the entire city with lethal traps to make sport of their deaths, making it the most dangerous Hunger Games so far.

Not going to spoil the ending here.

On a scale from 1-10 I give it an 8.5 because it was kind of dull but I liked all the previous Hunger Games movies, and overall it’s a good film.

I recommend this film to people who liked the previous Hunger Games movies and books.

Movie review

I recently saw the new movie Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension at Theatres at Mall of America with my sister. The movie theatre was packed and we sat in the middle.

The beginning of the movie had a slow start like in the other ones. When I was watching the movie I got kinda bored because at times nothing was really happening. It is more interesting when you start seeing things move around and start getting scared.

The movie was about a man and his wife and daughter that are getting ready for Christmas in their new house. After moving in they come across an old camcorder. Later, the husband (Ryan) found out that the camcorder can record strange apparitions that you can’t see. Then, their daughter (Leila) starts talking to an imaginary friend and she starts acting strange. They then find themselves in a terrifying battle with a supernatural force.

Overall, it’s a good movie. On a scale from 1-10 I give it an 8.5 because of how it’s kind of  slow when the scary parts were not happening. Also, if you thought you were getting closure, you’ll be disappointed but overall it’s a great film.

I recommend this film to people who liked the previous Paranormal Activities movies, and like being scared.

Movie review

I recently saw the movie Everest in 3D at Regal Brooklyn Center Stadium 20. When I got to the theater I paid $10.87 for my ticket and they gave me 3D glasses. When I got into the theater it was empty and my brother and sister and I were the only ones in the theater.

The beginning of the movie was kind of  boring but it looked cool because it was in 3D. When I was watching the movie in 3D it made it more interesting to watch the film and it made things in the film look beautiful like the mountain and the snow; it  also made it look like you were right there.

The movie was about a team of climbers that try to climb mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and how they had to overcome situations during the journey up the mountain. It was based on a true story, and it’s a little sad. To be honest, my sister and I cried towards the end of the film (not to spoil the film, I won’t say why).

Overall, it’s a good movie. On a scale from 1-10 I give it a 7.5 because it has a slow start and is kind ofboring in the beginning but overall it’s a great film. I recommend this film to people who like to see people conquer their dreams.

Get to know the art teachers

At HPSH we have an excellent art department. I was able to ask Ms. Shomion and Ms. Schultz some questions about art. Their responses were as follows:

20151013_102217
Ms. Linn, Ms. Schultz, & Ms. Shomion

Ms. Shultz

1) What is art to you?   Art is a visual language. Art is a language that all people can use.

2) What do you like about art?   I like that art can mean so many things to so many people. I like that art can be “tight” or “loose”. Art can be very expressive and offer the artist a time to be still and think in different ways than they do at other times in their day.

3) What made you wanna become an art teacher?  I knew I would always be learning about new artists and new techniques. I also knew I would be working with other adults who are specialists in many other interesting areas like math, science, and history.

4) Who’s your favorite artist and why?   I really admire the work of the American Regionalists, who capture the curving landscapes and political figures from the Midwest. I also really like other artists whose work is more abstract or stylized like Harlem Renaissance artist Jacob Lawrence.

5) Do you work on your art on your free time?   I really enjoy it when I have time to paint, sculpt, or take photographs in my spare time. In the IB Art & Design class I sometimes have the luxury of creating art alongside students to model artistic thinking.

6) What makes a good artist in your opinion?   A good artist is anyone who is willing to risk sharing their own point of view through art.

7) How does art make you feel?   Art makes me feel calm. Art makes me feel connected with my natural environment, and the world of materials. Art can be very tactile because so much of it is made with your own hands.

Ms. Shomion

1) What is art to you?
Art is a creative expression of ideas, thoughts and emotions.  Art can be seen, heard and/or felt.

2) What do you like about art?
I love that Art both fulfills the need of the artist to express and the audience’s need to experience.

3) What made you wanna (want to) become an art teacher
Of the many things I enjoyed studying in school, Art was what I kept choosing to do in my spare time.  It took a few years to realize Art filled a need within me to be both solitary and social.  I could be completely quiet and introspective while creating and communicate so much in the sharing of my Artwork afterwards.  The thought of being surrounded by Art all day, and guiding young people through the process of creating and appreciating Art really resonated with me.  Teaching also fills my need to be both independent and social.  While I’m teaching I’m communicating constantly with my students; listening, watching and responding to their needs.  When I’m alone, prepping and planning, I do a massive amount of remembering and reflecting on the hundreds of tiny interactions I had that day.  Many people say teaching is an Art, I agree 100%.  Although I am exhausted at the end of each day, I enjoy almost every minute of it.

4) Who’s your favorite artist and why?
Wow, I can’t possibly choose one.  Intellectually I favor abstraction and/or surrealism over realism and visually I really love the contrast of combining a limited color palette with dark blacks and bright whites.

5) Do you work on your art on your free time?
Yes! I am currently working on a 28×28 painting of the three generations of women in my family and an 18×24 mixed medium piece that explores the upheaval, despair and anger I feel surrounding my mother’s death last Winter.

6) What makes a good artist in your opinion?
I know it sounds cheesy, but throw a dart at the IB Learner Profile poster and a good artist would need to embody that characteristic.  It takes a lot of hard work and self awareness to be able to push yourself, encounter obstacles, reflect, persevere and do it again, and again and again.  Good artists learn and grow everyday from both themselves and the world around them.

7) How does art make you feel?
Art makes me feel human.

What’s new at HPSH

Thisfloor year at HPSH there’s been some changes like, this year we got new flooring on the 1st floor and in a couple of rooms on the 1st floor.

water

We also got 3 new hydration stations/water fountains. These water fountains have cold water and also you can fill up your water bottles. They are located by the main office, by the French and Spanish rooms on the first floor, and also there is one in the cafeteria.

lockers

Also this year, all of the lockers got painted our school color RED, so now the lockers look the same, except the personalized ones.

courtyard

And the courtyard got leveled out, so now there’s not a big whole in the middle of it. This makes the courtyard  look nicer overall.
