The potentially large upcoming horror game (Zoochosis)

By: Julia Yang

Warning: The game discussed will contain hyper-realistic mutant animals, distorted bodies, unsettling sounds, blood, and possibly death. This is a physiological horror game with horror elements.

‘Zoochosis’ is a game that is being published and developed by Clapperheads. Clapperheads is a less known game development company but is recognized for their most popular game ‘Sparky Marky’. Zoochosis’ official announcement was on January 13th and is said to be released in Q2 2024.

The idea of ‘Zoochosis’ is that you’re a zookeeper doing your nightly shift of creating a vaccine to cure mutated animals. From what it looks like, throughout the game you’ll have to notice small shifts or differences within all animals to be able to tell who’s mutated or not.

Based on the game trailer, animals will try to fool you by acting as their average selves, the reason why is unknown as of now.

People who have watched the trailer, or maybe seen stuff about the game floating around on the internet, are really looking forward to ‘Zoochosis’. People like the idea, design, premise, and overall vibe of the game.

Something people seem to have a few worries about is the delivery. The game itself and the idea is awesome, but delivering this game and story well could be challenging. There are many games like ‘Zoochosis’ that have an incredible trailer and outlook, but when released, are total a letdown. A possible example of this could be Scott Cawthons ‘FNAF: Security Breach’. It looked great and everyone looked forward to it, but when it was released, many people had complaints and issues about the characters, story, and overall gameplay.

I hope ‘Zoochosis’ doesn’t go down the same path as some other games and it actually lives up to it’s fame.

Warning: this game will contain hyper-realistic mutant animals, distorted bodies, unsettling sounds, blood, and possibly death. This is a physiological horror game with horror elements.

Once it gets released, it’ll be on PC via ‘Steam’.

Understanding the different learning styles

By: Hermekay Dehaney

Photo by Element5 Digital on Pexels.com

Each person possesses a different combination of learning styles, and identifying your styles can be very helpful in helping you improve comprehension and knowledge retention.

In this article, I will tell you the top four primary learning styles, and their characteristics to help you figure out which ones best fit you, and how you can adapt to them.

The four main learning styles are:

  1. Visual learner

Visual learners are people who prefer to learn in a more visual format. They learn best with drawn-out charts, maps, and videos. Visual learners tend to remember things they see rather than hear, such as remembering people’s faces rather than their names. If this is you, here are some tips to help you adjust.

  • Color code your notes and planners: Using different colors to better understand what you are learning can help with organization and memorizing.
  • Making mind maps: A mind map is a technique used when you put down all the things you’ve learned and make connections between them. This can help you visualize the relationship between the things you’re learning.
  • Watch videos: For visual learners, watching videos rather than reading textbooks can help with illustrating complex concepts visually.

2)  Auditory learner

Auditory learners learn better when listening. They may prefer listening to lectures, and audiobooks, and contributing to discussions. Here are some tips to take advantage of being an auditory learner.

  • Recite: Reciting things can help to better remember and comprehend.
  • Listen to audiobooks and podcasts: Listening to audio recordings on the related subject is a way to absorb and retain the information.
  • Music: Listening to music preferably without lyrics is a good way for auditory learners to focus when doing assignments or studying.

3)  Kinesthetic learners

Kinesthetic learners, also known as tactile learners, learn best through hands-on activities. They prefer to actively engage in the material, such as performing experiments instead of listening and watching, that’s why most usually have difficulty sitting for long. They have a strong sense of touch and tend to remember information they physically experienced.

Tips for kinesthetic learners:

  • Interactive learning: Things such as online simulations, education, and making models allow kinesthetic learners to be comfortable while also learning something.
  • Use gestures: Incorporating gestures in learning can help kinesthetic   learners symbolize the concept by acting it out to help with memory recall.
  • Take breaks: Allow yourself to take breaks during homework and studying by going on a short walk, or stretching. Doing so allows you to be focused and engaged.

4)   Reading/writing learner

Reading/writing learners learn better when the information is in written word/text. They retain information better with textbooks, articles, and written instruction.

Here are some tips for reading/writing learners:

  • Rewrite/reread: Rewriting and reading text in your own words helps with  understanding.
  •  Flashcards: Creating flashcards with questions on one side, and answers on the other side. You can write it down yourself or use apps such as Duolingo. Quiz yourself regularly to test your knowledge and memory.
  • Take detailed notes: Writing down key points, and definitions when reading, and studying assignments.

Pay attention to your natural techniques and methods that seem to work best for you whether it’s being a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or reading/writing learner.

Don’t limit yourself to one learning style, the majority of people have a combination of the styles. Once you identify the learning styles that fit you, adjust your study habits and learning strategies accordingly.

The Mage Corps of the Vaserian Federation Defence Forces: ARCERIUM RISING 4

By: Hoaseng Thao

Note: This article goes over a military branch of a fictional nation.

Description

The Mage Corps is the second smallest branch of the VFDF, with at least 10,283 active personnel as of 2049, but the majority of those enlisted in the branch aren’t referred to by their assigned title “Mages”. Within the ranks of the Mage Corps, there are Mages referred to as “Couriers”. Couriers are personnel assigned to support Mages in any way or form, acting as bodyguards for other Mages.

The official motto of the corps is “Videam Odds” which is translated as “Let’s See The Odds”, which represents the branch’s history of daring operations against much larger foes. Service members have the title of Mages, even if they are referred to as Couriers.

Personal Equipment

Mages are allowed to freely change their equipment to fit their needs as long as they stay within the branch’s guidelines for personal equipment. Mages upon completing boot camp, are allowed to commission personalized staffs that will be used until the end of their career. The Mage Corps uses the Altering Camouflage pattern, first designed in 2009. The camo was chosen over the Army’s Uni Deception Camo, or UDP, due to the army’s camo’s lack of actual concealment in any environment.

Every camo pattern utilized by the Vaserian Federation Defense Forces

Background

Map of the Vaserian Federation

Long before the Hero’s victory over the Great Empires, and the many centuries before it, the human species along with its subspecies have always been able to use the power of their souls to create what’s known as “Magic”, and in the modern era, those who master the many arts of magic played a crucial role in turning the tides of war.

In 1917 AH (After Hero), the Vaserian Congress passed the Mage Corps Act, establishing the Mage Corps as the fifth branch of the Vaserian Federation Defense Forces, also referred to as the VFDF. The main reason as to why the Mage Corps is its own branch was so that Mages can act more like a corpsman that can be transferred to each branch of the VFDF. Although the act was passed by Congress, many of the top brass within the VFDF saw the change as a radical move geared to make the Mages act more independently from the other branches.

The Mage Corps would see their first sight of combat in The Great Vaserian War of 1920, where Mages attached to the 1st Marine Division of the Vaserian Federation Marine Corps, took part in the defense of the Vaserian coastal city of Romas on July 1st, 1920, from the invading Royal Sapanese Forces.

Top ten best dressed at the Met Gala

By: Hermekay Dehaney

Photo by Charles Parker on Pexels.com

The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Gala, is an annual fundraising event hosted on May 1st at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York. The gala revolves around a specific theme, which is often tied to the Museum exhibitions. Celebrities in fashion, film, music, and the arts showcase their outfits based on that theme. This year, the inspiration was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the official dress code was “The Garden of Time.”

I’ll be highlighting the looks that stood out to me the most, and that truly captured the theme.

10. Phoebe Dynevor wearing a Victoria Beckham Gown

Link to the photo: https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/phoebe-dynevor-met-gala-victoria-beckham

Phoebe Dynevor, most famous for her role in ‘Bridgerton’ became the first person to attend the Met Gala wearing a gown by Victoria Beckham.

What makes this one of my top 10 favorites is how entirely sheer and pink it is, with some flowers surrounding the dress. Simple, yet beautiful.

9. Karlie Kloss wearing Swarovski

Link to photo: https://www.vogue.com/article/karlie-kloss-2024-met-gala

Karlie Kloss, who is a model, wore a bejeweled custom Swarovski gown covered in 240,500 crystals. Her dress was stunning, especially with the flowers covering the top of the dress.

She fits the theme, and that’s why she takes the 9th place.

She was not the only one wearing Swarovski, she and 3 other models that were accompanied by the Swarovski creative director Giovanna Engelbert all matched representing the four seasons. Anok Yai wore a blue bodysuit covered in 98,000 gems. Irina Shayk wore an old Hollywood-inspired silver gown,  covered in 84,000 crystals. Imaan Hammam, wore a two-piece yellow skirt made of 133,000 crystals.

8. Taylor Russel wearing Loewe

Link to photo: https://www.vogue.com/article/taylor-russell-2024-met-gala

As the global ambassador of Loewe, it was no surprise that she was wearing a custom-made Loewe gown.

Her gown is a high-neck corset designed to resemble a wood marquetry pattern paired with a silk white skirt.

Her very earthy look fits the theme of the Met Gala, and that’s why I put her in 8th place.

7. Lana del Rey wearing Alexander McQueen

Link to photo: https://www.vogue.com/article/lana-del-reys-2024-met-gala-look-references-an-iconic-alexander-mcqueen-collection?scrlybrkr=10982ec1

Lana del Rey wore an archival Alexander McQueen gown from the 2006 fall collection. Her dress was covered in bronze-bullion hawthorn branches paired with a silk tulle headpiece.

Her dress was perfect for the nature theme.

6. Nicki Minaj wearing Marni

Link to photo: https://www.vogue.com/article/nicki-minaj-transformed-into-a-floral-sculpture-at-the-2024-met-gala

Nicki Minaj was wearing a custom-made short yellow Marni dress paired with a yellow Trunkaroo purse. Her look was made by the Marni creative director, Francesco Risso.

Nicki Minaj’s look seems to have been inspired by her old style from the early 2010s with the different multi-colors. The artwork of the dress truly fits the nature theme with the 3D flowers. She finished the look with a purse.

5. Eliza Gonzalez wearing Del Core

Link to photo: https://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2024/05/07/eiza-gonzalez-wore-del-core-to-the-2024-met-gala/

The actress wore a custom pink Del Core gown made from organza-shaped petals inspired by a flower that grows in her home country of Mexico.

Elizabeth Saltzman the creator of the dress said “It is a peeling orchid dress, covered with layers of silk organza, shaded in pink, ivory and cream,” The dress looks like a dress out of a fairytale which is why I put it in 5th place.

4. Zendaya wearing Margiela

Link to both photos: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/celebrity/ latest/a60662466/zendaya-red-carpet-photos-met-gala-2024/

Zendaya was styled by her long-time stylist, Law Roach, who dressed her in not one but two gowns custom made by Maison Margiela by John Galliano. Her deep blue and green dress represents a peacock inspired look with birds, berries, and vines design, topped off with a feather headpiece.

Her next dress was a black gown with a bouquet design headpiece with different colors of roses. Her dress definitely fits the theme.

3. Mona Patel wearing Iris van Herpen

Link to dress: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/mona-patel-met-gala-dress-b2543423.html

In my top 3, we have Mona Patel who wore a custom couture Iris van Herpen gown. Her dress featured Indian embroidery, honoring her Indian heritage. The dress also included a butterfly design on the corset part of her dress, and an animated butterfly design going down her arm designed by Casey Curran.

Mona Patel said “I wanted my debut look to be something that celebrates my heritage and also combines my love of couture, and when I heard of the theme, Iris van Herpen seemed like the obvious choice,” and I think she did that perfectly.

2. Alia Bhatt wearing Sabyasachi

Link to see dress: https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/fashion/fashion-news/a60718865/alia-bhatts-2024-met-gala-saree/

Coming in 2nd place is Alia Bhatt honoring her culture by wearing a custom sari, featuring a 23 foot long train. The mint green gown is covered with flowers which are covered in crystals. The dress took over 163 people around 1965 hours to create.

The dress is partly inspired by the 1920s fringe style, with earthy colors to honor nature’s beauty.

1. Harris Reed wearing his own design

Link to dress: https://wwd.com/pop-culture/celebrity-news/harris-reed-outfit-met-gala-1236357587/

The final outfit absolutely suited the theme “Garden of Time.” Coming in 1st place we have Harris Reed who wore his own custom made design. The designer first debuted his design at his 2024 collection “Shadow Dance.” The pantsuit was made with silk material and features 3D thorns along with a halo headpiece with arrows coming out of it.

Laufey’s ‘Bewitched’ album review

By: Fletcher Pike

The official album cover

Laufey (pronounced LAY-vay) is a popular Icelandic-Chinese singer and songwriter that is known for her music inspired by a lot of old jazz musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald and her soft vocals. Laufey’s growing popularity led to the release of her award-winning album ‘Bewitched’ on September 8th, 2023. This album features beautiful string instruments and classic jazz beats accompanied by stunning vocals by Laufey. This album includes 14 songs in total with a length of 43 minutes.

Track 1: Dreamer

The first song on this album starts off with a beautiful overlapped vocal segment that progresses into an amazing traditional jazz beat with a soft piano accompaniment and brushed drums. I thought that this was a really nice opening to an album and I would rate this song a 10/10.

Track 2: Second Best

“Second Best” starts off with a faint guitar sound with a classic jazz drum beat along with some string instruments and beautiful backup singer lines that really add flow to the song. I liked this song and I would rate it a 9/10.

Track 3: Haunted

“Haunted” is one of my favorite songs on this album, which starts with a somewhat eerie solo violin which becomes a really nice beat with gentle guitar strums. I found the melody and rhythm to be beautifully haunting, and fit the name of the song perfectly. I think that this song deserves a 10/10.

Track 4: Must Be Love

“Must Be Love” begins with a nice guitar sound that continues throughout the song. I really liked Laufey’s vocals in this song and found the echoey backup vocals to be a nice addition to the song. I liked this song and I think it is a 9/10.

Track 5: While You Were Sleeping

“While You Were Sleeping” in my opinion lacks some of the jazz elements, with more of a guitar strummed beat and classic drums. This doesn’t mean it’s not a great song. I really liked this song and found it to be quite nice to listen to. I think this song deserves a 9.5/10.

Track 6: Lovesick

“Lovesick” features a guitar strummed beat and drums which I really liked. Short orchestral segments are added underneath the beat which I think added depth to the song. I loved this song a lot and I would rate it a 10/10.

Track 7: California and Me (feat. Philharmonia Orchestra)

“California and Me’”starts off with a scaling piano and a nice melody. The Philharmonia Orchestra is featured on this song including nice woodwind sounds and beautiful string instruments. I really liked Laufey’s vocals in this song and I think this song is a 9.5/10

Track 8: Nocturne (Interlude)

“Nocturne” is a 2-minute long interlude composed of only piano, which I actually found to be very nice to listen to. I think this interlude is an 8/10.

Track 9: Promise

This song is a bit calmer than some of the other songs on this album, with a soft piano and beautiful vocals. During the song, a brushed drum beat is added over the piano and vocals. I really liked that the volume dynamics shifted throughout the song. I thought that this song was really nice to listen to and I would rate it a 10/10.

Track 10: From The Start

“From The Start” is one of Laufey’s most popular songs overall, featuring an interesting mix of bossa nova and jazz with a really nice melody and vibe. Laufey essentially describes this song as the feeling of awkwardness that we feel when we are near someone that we secretly like, which I can definitely see through the lyrics. I really loved this song and I rate it a 10/10.

Track 11: Misty

“Misty” really reminded me of the vintage jazz theme of this album, with a beautiful piano and brushed drums. I thought that this song was very beautiful and I would rate it a 9/10.

Track 12: Serendipity

“Serendipity” is a primarily piano and vocal composed piece, with a softer and more somber vibe to it. I loved the melody and how the notes flowed. I think this was a really nice song and I would rate it a 10/10.

Track 13: Letter To My 13 Year Old Self

The song “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self” has a bit more of a somber vibe compared to some of the more upbeat songs on this album. In this song, Laufey sings a slow melody, with lyrics referring to how she would have reassured her 13 year old self with words of wisdom as she struggled to fit in with others and stood out from her peers. This song also includes themes of hope and self-improvement. I thought that this song was very nice and I rate it a 9.5/10.

Track 14: Bewitched

The final song on this album is a wonderful arrangement of magical string instruments, and stunning vocals by Laufey. I thought that this song was enchanting with how the string instruments were incorporated into the song. I think this was a nice finish to an album and that this song deserves a 10/10.

Overall, this was an amazing album that really captivated the theme of old jazz with a few modern twists. I loved Laufey’s incredible vocal range and the instruments that were incorporated into these songs. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that is a fan of jazz music or musicians like Beabadoobee, Mitski, or Faye Webster. I decided to rate this album a 10/10 because I thought it was very beautiful and I love Laufey’s vocals.

How to cross a river

By: Trump Vang

Imagine yourself in a situation where you’d have to travel across a river. This could be anywhere from a simple land travel obstacle to a dangerous and cautious situation. Either way, knowing how to cross a river may not be integral, but will be helpful in specific situations.

Now one may wonder how they got themselves stuck in this situation. There could be a multitude of reasons, but the focus at this very moment should be placed within crossing the river. There is a reason why you’re crossing it, and that reason is pushing you to cross it as fast as possible. Regardless, here’s a guide to cross a river:

1) Assess your Situation:

Look at what you’ve got around you as there may be things that are helpful to you in their own way. Even if it may seem ordinary, there are things that can help you in the most dire of situations.

For instance, when a woman, Angela Hernandez, found herself in danger in a sinking car, she was able to escape and find her way to land. Finding herself trapped, she scourged for clean drinking water. Using a garden hose from her car, she was able to collect water, and through this she was able to survive through the ordeal. Hearing from Angela’s story, it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings and know where you are and what you can do.

2) Plan your Travel

Rivers are not easy obstacles to cross. You will need a plan to cross a river, and it may be extensive depending on the width you’d need to travel. On average, rivers flow at a rate of 5 km an hour (3 miles an hour), so be wary of these issues.

Depending on the items you’ve picked up, you can plan ahead of what you’re thinking through. For example, a river with a low enough width can be crossed with a log or a “bridge”. If it has low enough depth or is flowing slow enough, it’s possible that you could swim across it. Assess and plan using the knowledge you’ve got.

Remember, it’s dangerous to head into a situation blindfolded. Make sure you know what you’re doing. Plan thoroughly and ensure that you cover each step and have back up plans in case something goes amiss.

3) Cross the River

This is it. The moment that you’ve been waiting for. Cross the RIver! You’ve planned ahead up until this point, and it’s led you to this. Drop the rest of your fears and anxieties, as this is the main step to crossing a river. Whether or not you decided to cross a fallen log, create your own boat, or plain out swim, you’ve stood up against your river crossing issues and have been able to beat them whole-heartedly.

Hey, if you’ve made it this far, you’ve most likely crossed the river! Congrats to you and your ability to do so! Now face the world with your motives and lead yourself to success by conquering problems through river crossing.

What is Yom HaShoah?

By: Jocelyn Knorr

March of the Living, 2016. Photo taken from Wikimedia Commons

Yom HaShoah is a Jewish religious and secular holiday honoring over six million Jewish people killed in the Holocaust and the Jewish ghetto uprisings in Poland. Created in the 1950s by the Knesset, it falls on the 27th day of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar—in 2024, that was May 6th. Holocaust Remembrance Day in Europe is celebrated on January 27th, the anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation by Soviet troops, but this was thought to be too focused on the accomplishments of other people; the Knesset chose to solemnize a date belonging solely to the Jewish people.

In North America, it is celebrated in several ways; many synagogues run public educational programs and hold talks by survivors, and the Mourner’s Kaddish is always recited, occasionally in addition to other prayers. Typically, the lights are dimmed and each member of the congregation lights a candle ceremonially. The names of the six million victims are sometimes read aloud, emphasizing the scale of the slaughter. The poetry of Holocaust survivors Primo Levi and Paul Celan are read on occasion.

Outside of North America, a march is held yearly at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the death camps—called the March of the Living, it is testament to the fact that we are still here. In my opinion, this belies a core part of Yom HaShoah that many non-Jewish people may miss when looking in from the outside. Yom HaShoah is celebrated today to force us to recall a tragedy that otherwise may be lost to history. This is history, yes, but it had a massive impact on our world today—in 1933, an estimated 9.5 million Jewish people lived in Europe. Nearly two-thirds of a population was wiped from the face of the earth, two-thirds of a community is missing today. Jewish culture is all about survival in the face of resistance; everyone from the Roman Empire to Nazi Germany has tried to eliminate us, but we have survived. We honor those lost, and turn our faces towards the future; ready to weather whatever comes next.

Top 6 most popular pets in the U.S.

      By: Calla Fragassi

Image generated by: DeepAI

As of this year, over 90 million households in the U.S. own a pet. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of pets in the U.S. skyrocketed as people searched for companionship during the times of uncertainty. They are seen as part of the family and can mean as much to you as any human can. These pets can range from common dogs or cats to exotic spiders or reptiles. This is a list of the top 6 most common pets in the United States, according to Pethelpful.com:

  1. Dogs

The most commonly owned pet in the United States are dogs, which should come as no surprise to most. It is estimated that there are approximately 76 million pet dogs in the United States, and over 46 million households own one. Dogs are the most common pets because they are known as “man’s best friends” and are perfect companions and additions to the family.

  1. Cats

At number 2 are cats. Cats are in 31 million households in the United States and are loved for their cute and soft appearance as well as being playful and sociable. They are clean, live long lives and are quiet pets that are also low maintenance and are cheaper compared to dogs.

  1. Fish

In the United States, fish are number 3 as the most popular pets in the U.S., and 12% of households in the U.S. own one or more fish. They are easy pets if you don’t have the time or space for a common pet. Fish have also been known for reducing stress when you watch them swim in an aquarium. These are a perfect fun and exciting pets to look at as they can come in different colors, shapes and sizes.

  1. Birds

Birds are great pets for being low cost, and live long lives. They can provide social interaction, stress-relief and are good for mental health. Birds easily form close connections with their owners and are extremely loyal. They love being cuddled and are very easy to train!

  1. Reptiles

Reptiles are at number 5 on this list for their fun, playful qualities. This includes lizards, snakes, salamanders and other small reptilian animals. They are common in older age groups, are increasing in popularity and can be fun to take care of. Reptiles are also ranked number 1 for “specialty” pets.

  1. Rabbits

Although rabbits are sweet and fluffy animals, they are also very difficult to care for. Once you get past the initial training stages of bunnies, they make great companions and can provide a lot of comfort. They are affectionate and love to cuddle and spend time with their owners.

All of these amazing animals have unique characteristics and appearances that are clearly loved in the United States. Each of these 6 different pets have great qualities, and you can refer to this list when deciding what kind of pet would be best for you and your lifestyle!

What’s on your ballot in 2024 and why it’s important

By: Charlie St. Dennis

Photo by Element5 Digital on Pexels.com

If you’ve at all been watching the news over the past few months, you might be aware that there’s a presidential election coming up in November. The two major parties, Democrats and Republicans, have nominated President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, respectively. Even though that’s getting a lot of attention, rightfully so, the ballot is going to be full of elections this year. Here is your guide to what you will be voting for.

US Senate

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (DFL) has represented Minnesota in the Senate since 2007, and is expected to be the DFL’s nominee for a third term in the Senate. Currently, 7 Republicans have filed to be on the ballot for the August primary, where they will ultimately decide their nominee. The DFL is expected to endorse Sen. Klobuchar at their State Convention in Duluth later this spring. The MN GOP has declined to endorse thus far.

US Representative

If you live in St. Paul or Minneapolis, you either live in District 4 or District 5. District 4 contains all of Ramsey County and a portion of Washington County. This means it contains all of Saint Paul and its Eastern surrounding suburbs, like Woodbury, Stillwater, West St. Paul, and more. District 4 has been represented by Rep. Betty McCollum (DFL) since 2001, and in her 23 year tenure, she has yet to face a formidable primary challenge. That remains unwavered this year. The DFL is expected to endorse her at the CD4 Convention later this month. May Lor Xiong, an educator, is the Republican poised to win the nomination. She ran in 2022 and lost with roughly 32% of the vote.

If you live in Minneapolis and it’s surrounding suburbs, however, you are likely in CD5. The district has been represented by Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has held the seat since 2019. Rep. Omar is currently facing a formidable primary challenge from Former Councilmember Don Samuels, who resides in North Minneapolis. Samuels has painted himself to be a more “pragmatic” alternative to Omar, who has proven to be one of the most progressive members of Congress. This race will likely be close, but Rep. Omar is expected to secure endorsements of many elected officials and potentially the DFL party, which will be decided on May 11th. Samuels previously ran a well-funded campaign against Omar in 2022, but was defeated in the primary.

State Legislature

This year, every state house seat will be up for election. State house seats are up every two years, and many Twin Cities Metro candidates are not facing formidable primary or general election challengers. The state legislature makes decisions that directly affect you, more so than the federal government. While these races may not seem exciting, they determine your rights.

Ballot Measures

In St. Paul, voters will vote on a childcare ballot measure. Voters would be voting on an increased property tax. The money from the increased tax would fully cover childcare for newborns to 5-year-olds from low-income families who fall 185 percent below the poverty line. That makes up the majority of the children in our city.

School Board (Minneapolis Only)

Since St. Paul voted on 4 school board seats last year, this year we have off. Minneapolis, on the other hand, will be voting for 4 seats. The seats are currently occupied by Kim Ellison, Ira Jourdain, Sharon El-Amin, and Adriana Cerrillo. Cerrillo and Ellison are running for re-election unopposed, Ira Jourdain is stepping down to run for State House, and El-Amin faces a challenger in Janie Gholston. Minneapolis Federation of Teachers President Greta Callahan is running against Lara Bergman for Jourdain’s seat. The Minneapolis DFL will reconvene their convention in May to endorse in that race.

Important Dates

It is important to note that regardless of the endorsement process, the voters will ultimately be selecting each party’s respective nominee. The statewide primary will be Tuesday, August 13th. Those nominees will engage in a 3-month general election campaign cycle, which will come down to Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 5th.

All elections are important, not just the ones getting attention. All 16, 17, and 18 year olds are able to pre register with the Secretary of State’s Office. Once you are 18, you can vote in all of these elections. Check your voter status at: www.mnvotes.org
