Laufey’s ‘Bewitched’ album review

By: Fletcher Pike

The official album cover

Laufey (pronounced LAY-vay) is a popular Icelandic-Chinese singer and songwriter that is known for her music inspired by a lot of old jazz musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald and her soft vocals. Laufey’s growing popularity led to the release of her award-winning album ‘Bewitched’ on September 8th, 2023. This album features beautiful string instruments and classic jazz beats accompanied by stunning vocals by Laufey. This album includes 14 songs in total with a length of 43 minutes.

Track 1: Dreamer

The first song on this album starts off with a beautiful overlapped vocal segment that progresses into an amazing traditional jazz beat with a soft piano accompaniment and brushed drums. I thought that this was a really nice opening to an album and I would rate this song a 10/10.

Track 2: Second Best

“Second Best” starts off with a faint guitar sound with a classic jazz drum beat along with some string instruments and beautiful backup singer lines that really add flow to the song. I liked this song and I would rate it a 9/10.

Track 3: Haunted

“Haunted” is one of my favorite songs on this album, which starts with a somewhat eerie solo violin which becomes a really nice beat with gentle guitar strums. I found the melody and rhythm to be beautifully haunting, and fit the name of the song perfectly. I think that this song deserves a 10/10.

Track 4: Must Be Love

“Must Be Love” begins with a nice guitar sound that continues throughout the song. I really liked Laufey’s vocals in this song and found the echoey backup vocals to be a nice addition to the song. I liked this song and I think it is a 9/10.

Track 5: While You Were Sleeping

“While You Were Sleeping” in my opinion lacks some of the jazz elements, with more of a guitar strummed beat and classic drums. This doesn’t mean it’s not a great song. I really liked this song and found it to be quite nice to listen to. I think this song deserves a 9.5/10.

Track 6: Lovesick

“Lovesick” features a guitar strummed beat and drums which I really liked. Short orchestral segments are added underneath the beat which I think added depth to the song. I loved this song a lot and I would rate it a 10/10.

Track 7: California and Me (feat. Philharmonia Orchestra)

“California and Me’”starts off with a scaling piano and a nice melody. The Philharmonia Orchestra is featured on this song including nice woodwind sounds and beautiful string instruments. I really liked Laufey’s vocals in this song and I think this song is a 9.5/10

Track 8: Nocturne (Interlude)

“Nocturne” is a 2-minute long interlude composed of only piano, which I actually found to be very nice to listen to. I think this interlude is an 8/10.

Track 9: Promise

This song is a bit calmer than some of the other songs on this album, with a soft piano and beautiful vocals. During the song, a brushed drum beat is added over the piano and vocals. I really liked that the volume dynamics shifted throughout the song. I thought that this song was really nice to listen to and I would rate it a 10/10.

Track 10: From The Start

“From The Start” is one of Laufey’s most popular songs overall, featuring an interesting mix of bossa nova and jazz with a really nice melody and vibe. Laufey essentially describes this song as the feeling of awkwardness that we feel when we are near someone that we secretly like, which I can definitely see through the lyrics. I really loved this song and I rate it a 10/10.

Track 11: Misty

“Misty” really reminded me of the vintage jazz theme of this album, with a beautiful piano and brushed drums. I thought that this song was very beautiful and I would rate it a 9/10.

Track 12: Serendipity

“Serendipity” is a primarily piano and vocal composed piece, with a softer and more somber vibe to it. I loved the melody and how the notes flowed. I think this was a really nice song and I would rate it a 10/10.

Track 13: Letter To My 13 Year Old Self

The song “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self” has a bit more of a somber vibe compared to some of the more upbeat songs on this album. In this song, Laufey sings a slow melody, with lyrics referring to how she would have reassured her 13 year old self with words of wisdom as she struggled to fit in with others and stood out from her peers. This song also includes themes of hope and self-improvement. I thought that this song was very nice and I rate it a 9.5/10.

Track 14: Bewitched

The final song on this album is a wonderful arrangement of magical string instruments, and stunning vocals by Laufey. I thought that this song was enchanting with how the string instruments were incorporated into the song. I think this was a nice finish to an album and that this song deserves a 10/10.

Overall, this was an amazing album that really captivated the theme of old jazz with a few modern twists. I loved Laufey’s incredible vocal range and the instruments that were incorporated into these songs. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that is a fan of jazz music or musicians like Beabadoobee, Mitski, or Faye Webster. I decided to rate this album a 10/10 because I thought it was very beautiful and I love Laufey’s vocals.

How to cross a river

By: Trump Vang

Imagine yourself in a situation where you’d have to travel across a river. This could be anywhere from a simple land travel obstacle to a dangerous and cautious situation. Either way, knowing how to cross a river may not be integral, but will be helpful in specific situations.

Now one may wonder how they got themselves stuck in this situation. There could be a multitude of reasons, but the focus at this very moment should be placed within crossing the river. There is a reason why you’re crossing it, and that reason is pushing you to cross it as fast as possible. Regardless, here’s a guide to cross a river:

1) Assess your Situation:

Look at what you’ve got around you as there may be things that are helpful to you in their own way. Even if it may seem ordinary, there are things that can help you in the most dire of situations.

For instance, when a woman, Angela Hernandez, found herself in danger in a sinking car, she was able to escape and find her way to land. Finding herself trapped, she scourged for clean drinking water. Using a garden hose from her car, she was able to collect water, and through this she was able to survive through the ordeal. Hearing from Angela’s story, it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings and know where you are and what you can do.

2) Plan your Travel

Rivers are not easy obstacles to cross. You will need a plan to cross a river, and it may be extensive depending on the width you’d need to travel. On average, rivers flow at a rate of 5 km an hour (3 miles an hour), so be wary of these issues.

Depending on the items you’ve picked up, you can plan ahead of what you’re thinking through. For example, a river with a low enough width can be crossed with a log or a “bridge”. If it has low enough depth or is flowing slow enough, it’s possible that you could swim across it. Assess and plan using the knowledge you’ve got.

Remember, it’s dangerous to head into a situation blindfolded. Make sure you know what you’re doing. Plan thoroughly and ensure that you cover each step and have back up plans in case something goes amiss.

3) Cross the River

This is it. The moment that you’ve been waiting for. Cross the RIver! You’ve planned ahead up until this point, and it’s led you to this. Drop the rest of your fears and anxieties, as this is the main step to crossing a river. Whether or not you decided to cross a fallen log, create your own boat, or plain out swim, you’ve stood up against your river crossing issues and have been able to beat them whole-heartedly.

Hey, if you’ve made it this far, you’ve most likely crossed the river! Congrats to you and your ability to do so! Now face the world with your motives and lead yourself to success by conquering problems through river crossing.

What is Yom HaShoah?

By: Jocelyn Knorr

March of the Living, 2016. Photo taken from Wikimedia Commons

Yom HaShoah is a Jewish religious and secular holiday honoring over six million Jewish people killed in the Holocaust and the Jewish ghetto uprisings in Poland. Created in the 1950s by the Knesset, it falls on the 27th day of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar—in 2024, that was May 6th. Holocaust Remembrance Day in Europe is celebrated on January 27th, the anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation by Soviet troops, but this was thought to be too focused on the accomplishments of other people; the Knesset chose to solemnize a date belonging solely to the Jewish people.

In North America, it is celebrated in several ways; many synagogues run public educational programs and hold talks by survivors, and the Mourner’s Kaddish is always recited, occasionally in addition to other prayers. Typically, the lights are dimmed and each member of the congregation lights a candle ceremonially. The names of the six million victims are sometimes read aloud, emphasizing the scale of the slaughter. The poetry of Holocaust survivors Primo Levi and Paul Celan are read on occasion.

Outside of North America, a march is held yearly at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the death camps—called the March of the Living, it is testament to the fact that we are still here. In my opinion, this belies a core part of Yom HaShoah that many non-Jewish people may miss when looking in from the outside. Yom HaShoah is celebrated today to force us to recall a tragedy that otherwise may be lost to history. This is history, yes, but it had a massive impact on our world today—in 1933, an estimated 9.5 million Jewish people lived in Europe. Nearly two-thirds of a population was wiped from the face of the earth, two-thirds of a community is missing today. Jewish culture is all about survival in the face of resistance; everyone from the Roman Empire to Nazi Germany has tried to eliminate us, but we have survived. We honor those lost, and turn our faces towards the future; ready to weather whatever comes next.

The most commonly owned pet in the United States are dogs, which should come as no surprise to most. It is estimated that there are approximately 76 million pet dogs in the United States, and over 46 million households own one. Dogs are the most common pets because they are known as “man’s best friends” and are perfect companions and additions to the family.

  1. Cats

At number 2 are cats. Cats are in 31 million households in the United States and are loved for their cute and soft appearance as well as being playful and sociable. They are clean, live long lives and are quiet pets that are also low maintenance and are cheaper compared to dogs.

What’s on your ballot in 2024 and why it’s important

By: Charlie St. Dennis

If you’ve at all been watching the news over the past few months, you might be aware that there’s a presidential election coming up in November. The two major parties, Democrats and Republicans, have nominated President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, respectively. Even though that’s getting a lot of attention, rightfully so, the ballot is going to be full of elections this year. Here is your guide to what you will be voting for.

US Senate

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (DFL) has represented Minnesota in the Senate since 2007, and is expected to be the DFL’s nominee for a third term in the Senate. Currently, 7 Republicans have filed to be on the ballot for the August primary, where they will ultimately decide their nominee. The DFL is expected to endorse Sen. Klobuchar at their State Convention in Duluth later this spring. The MN GOP has declined to endorse thus far.

US Representative

If you live in St. Paul or Minneapolis, you either live in District 4 or District 5. District 4 contains all of Ramsey County and a portion of Washington County. This means it contains all of Saint Paul and its Eastern surrounding suburbs, like Woodbury, Stillwater, West St. Paul, and more. District 4 has been represented by Rep. Betty McCollum (DFL) since 2001, and in her 23 year tenure, she has yet to face a formidable primary challenge. That remains unwavered this year. The DFL is expected to endorse her at the CD4 Convention later this month. May Lor Xiong, an educator, is the Republican poised to win the nomination. She ran in 2022 and lost with roughly 32% of the vote.

If you live in Minneapolis and it’s surrounding suburbs, however, you are likely in CD5. The district has been represented by Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has held the seat since 2019. Rep. Omar is currently facing a formidable primary challenge from Former Councilmember Don Samuels, who resides in North Minneapolis. Samuels has painted himself to be a more “pragmatic” alternative to Omar, who has proven to be one of the most progressive members of Congress. This race will likely be close, but Rep. Omar is expected to secure endorsements of many elected officials and potentially the DFL party, which will be decided on May 11th. Samuels previously ran a well-funded campaign against Omar in 2022, but was defeated in the primary.

State Legislature

This year, every state house seat will be up for election. State house seats are up every two years, and many Twin Cities Metro candidates are not facing formidable primary or general election challengers. The state legislature makes decisions that directly affect you, more so than the federal government. While these races may not seem exciting, they determine your rights.

Ballot Measures

In St. Paul, voters will vote on a childcare ballot measure. Voters would be voting on an increased property tax. The money from the increased tax would fully cover childcare for newborns to 5-year-olds from low-income families who fall 185 percent below the poverty line. That makes up the majority of the children in our city.

School Board (Minneapolis Only)

Since St. Paul voted on 4 school board seats last year, this year we have off. Minneapolis, on the other hand, will be voting for 4 seats. The seats are currently occupied by Kim Ellison, Ira Jourdain, Sharon El-Amin, and Adriana Cerrillo. Cerrillo and Ellison are running for re-election unopposed, Ira Jourdain is stepping down to run for State House, and El-Amin faces a challenger in Janie Gholston. Minneapolis Federation of Teachers President Greta Callahan is running against Lara Bergman for Jourdain’s seat. The Minneapolis DFL will reconvene their convention in May to endorse in that race.

Important Dates

It is important to note that regardless of the endorsement process, the voters will ultimately be selecting each party’s respective nominee. The statewide primary will be Tuesday, August 13th. Those nominees will engage in a 3-month general election campaign cycle, which will come down to Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 5th.

All elections are important, not just the ones getting attention. All 16, 17, and 18 year olds are able to pre register with the Secretary of State’s Office. Once you are 18, you can vote in all of these elections. Check your voter status at: www.mnvotes.org

Half-dead, half-living

By: Pwe Doh Gay

This picture is of a half-dead, half-alive tree. I drew the tree half-dead, half-alive because of my other drawing of a half-sun, half-moon that looked cool, so I thought that a half-dead, half-alive tree would also look cool.

I like how it turned out, it is not as good as my last drawing, but I still think it looks cool. I like how you get to look at one picture, but with two different things on it. But I do think the image needs a little work on it. Like the branches; they need to be longer or add more of them and the same for the roots. I also think the leaves need to be a little bigger.

For my next image, I am thinking of drawing a cool optical illusion that messes with your mind.

‘Love/Sick’: Highland Theatre’s spring play

By: Erin Moore

The final Highland Theatre production of the 2023-24 school year opens Friday, May 10, at 7PM. The spring play is called ‘Love/Sick’ and is written by John Cariani, the author of last year’s spring play, ‘Almost, Maine.’

Dramatists Play Service says the following about the show: “A darker cousin to ‘Almost, Maine,’ John Cariani’s ‘Love/Sick’ is a collection of ten slightly twisted and completely hilarious short plays. Set on a Friday night in an alternate suburban reality, this ninety-minute romp explores the pain and the joy that comes with being in love. Full of imperfect lovers and dreamers, ‘Love/Sick’ is an unromantic comedy for the romantic in everyone.”

Rehearsals for ‘Love/Sick’ began Wednesday, April 24th. This means that this show has been put together in the span of two and a half weeks. Everyone involved: sound, lights, running crew, stage managers, the staff, set crew, and actors have worked tirelessly to turn this into a show that’s ready for an audience.

‘Love/Sick’ performances are in the auditorium at 7PM May 10th and 2PM and 7PM May 11th. Tickets can be purchased at the door in cash, card, or check. The prices are $5 for students and seniors, $10 for adults.

This is the final performance for the senior members of the cast and crew. That is why it’s extremely important to attend the show if you are able and support the theatre and these soon-to-be graduates, Lashia Lee, Aaron Armstrong, Sophia Paske, Samantha Tweh, Elodie Cummins, Alex Roepke, Isabel Stockwell, Dmitriy Mangal, August Kruszka, Evadne Pond, Claudia Hanson, Sally Norby, and Brooke Sinykin.

As this is the final production of the year, your next opportunity to get involved, aside from attending the show, isn’t until September. In the meantime, feel free to ask those already involved if you have any questions and check out the @hptheatrearts Instagram page.

Operation Mincemeat: The deception that won the Allies the war

By: Joceyln Knorr

HMS Seraph. Image taken from Wikimedia Commons

May, 1943. Operation Torch, the Allied tank invasion of North Africa, has just come to a close. Now, they are staring down the barrel of a much larger invasion—the Nazis have occupied Europe entirely, and are threatening to make the jump to the UK, too. It’s only obvious where the Allied forces will land; the Allies hold the strategic port of Tunis, and it’s only logical to make the landing from there. As such, Mussolini and Hitler have predicted an invasion, reinforcing the island with 100,00 troops. If the Allies make the landing there, they will surely be rebuffed; the task is now to divert the troops, and make sure that they’re expecting the landing anywhere else.

Enter Ian Fleming, personal assistant to Rear Admiral John Godfrey and future author of the James Bond novels. In 1939, he penned a document called the “Trout Memo;” it outlined several scenarios and strategies that may be applied when in need of a way to deceive the Axis Powers. At the time, the Trout Memo was considered outlandish, and it was shelved. However, in 1942, this memo was picked up by one Lieutenant Charles Cholmondeley. He was inspired by a suggestion in the Trout Memo—using a planted corpse with fake documents to lure German U-Boats towards mines—and the Turner crash—an American officer had died in a plane crash in 1942 after the engine failed over neutral Spain; forensic analysis of the classified documents he was carrying had indicated that they were copied by the Nazis—to write up his own plan. The plan was thus; a fresh corpse of service age, preferably deceased via drowning, would be obtained. He would be dressed in a uniform, forged documents attached to his person, and be delivered via submarine to Spain, where the fake information would be passed on to the Nazis.

This plan was accepted after a few minor alterations, and Cholmondeley was put in contact with Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu, the Navy liaison to Military Deception. Together, they sourced a body, procured from a coroner that Montagu knew from his lawyer days. The provenance of this body is highly disputed. Historians generally agree that the man was Glyndwr Michael, an unhoused man who came to London from Cardiff for work and died after eating rat poison. However, there is a small minority contingent that believe the body used was one of the men from the HMS Dasher, an aircraft carrier that took a hit in March of 1943. Either way, the body was used without the knowledge, and certainly not the consent, of the family.

With the corpse secured, Cholmondeley and Montagu set to work creating his new identity. A common surname, a rank of high enough importance to be carrying classified information, and a department that could direct inquirers to Naval intelligence all coincided, creating Captain (Acting Major) William “Bill” Martin. Next, they had to equip him with documents of the sort one might realistically carry on one’s person, reinforcing the illusion that this man was real. A fiancee was invented for Martin, by the name of Pam; a photo was provided by Jean Leslie, a secretary at MI5. Personal correspondence was also included, along with pocket change, stamps, and a medallion of St. Christopher. This was unusual in officially-Anglican England, but the justification was that Spain was mostly Roman Catholic—if the administrators handing the body saw him as a member of their community, they might be more inclined to trust him, and therefore the information he was carrying.

The deception itself took the form of personal correspondence between Lieutenant General Sir Archibald Nye and General Sir Harold Alexander. Several drafts were done, but were found unsatisfactory—eventually, they got Nye himself to write the letter, indicating that the British Army were to land at Greece, and their cover target was Sicily.

With all their ducks finally in a row, Cholmondeley and Montagu passed the corpse off to the crew of the HMS Seraph, a submarine used in covert operations. Acting Major Martin was launched on April 30th, surfacing in Huelva later that same day. Vice-consul of Spain Francis Haselden had been briefed beforehand, and knowing that the security of British diplomatic telegraphs had been breached, stressed the importance of the documents and how swiftly they had to be returned to British soil. Martin himself was autopsied and buried with honors, while his briefcase was passed along to Cadiz; there, it caught the attention of Karl-Erich Kühlenthal, one of the top agents in the German spy network. From Kühlenthal, the documents were passed onto Berlin, and eventually made it onto the desk of Hitler himself. Convinced that the documents were legitimate, German high command transferred their troops from Sicily to Greece in late May.

No official estimates of the impact of Operation Mincemeat have ever been undertaken, but casualties on both the Allied and Axis sides were few, owing to the small amount of troops that remained concentrated on the island. Most notably, the invasion led to the fall of Mussolini’s dictatorship and the return of leadership to King Victor Emmanuel III, who pulled out of the war afterwards. Captain Martin’s memorial in Spain has since been amended; it now indicates that the deceased’s name was Glyndwr Michael, serving under the name of William Martin. A short service, indeed, but one that saved countless lives.
