School desks around the world

By: Trump Vang

Imagine a school environment. What do you envision? A white board? A teacher? A computer? While those are parts of the school environment, you may be forgetting a common object that’s found within a classroom. Whether it be long lectures or taking tests, the common school desk plays an important part in our education today.

Over the years, school desks have developed alongside youth education. Originally invented in 1880, the desk was created by John D. Loughlin in Ohio. The first iteration created by Loughlin was known as “The Fashion Desk”, and was quite popular across the United States due to some of its aesthetic aspects. The American Desk has evolved since then, becoming the wraparound desk and the simple chair plus table set.

As of today, school desks have evolved in their own way to accommodate students and teachers needs. Across the world, students and teachers require different needs, and this is evident within their school desks. For example, in Finland, their classroom furniture is unlike the hard tables and chairs that we’re used to. Instead of the rigidity of the wraparound desk, schools in Finland mix a combination of comfortable chairs with movable tables. These aspects of their classroom allows for an easier collaboration between students and simpler applications of planned activities. Compared to American Education, Finland has a much more relaxed approach to learning, and this is reflected by their choice in desks and collaborative tables.

Taking a look at another country with different education standards, India is on the other side of the spectrum. In their classroom, students are expected to listen and follow their structure without interruptions or questions. To accommodate these standards, Indian school desks are made up of a long table accompanied by two school chairs. These desks are always made to face the front of the room and teacher to allow for more concentration. Through this, students are able to place their focus on the teacher and their education as a whole.

While being common throughout many classrooms, not all classrooms come along with desks. Many countries around the world face economic problems and are unable to properly provide facilities and school furniture. Some of the countries, such as Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda have overcrowding issues in classrooms, and these problems only become more exasperating. Though, not everything needs to have proper school furniture to function. Youth are still able to learn through the efforts of their teachers and their own efforts towards their education. In this instance, desks aren’t a necessary item and their absence in this instance shows that a classroom only requires a teacher to function.

Desks are an important part of the classroom and they help reflect on the style of education presented by their teachers. Though no matter the type of desk, the atmosphere of the classroom and the teaching style of the teacher, this is always true: Education is always prevalent no matter the environment that surrounds it. School desks are just a small part of a student’s days that help accommodate them towards the needs of their education system.

The half-sun half-moon

By: Pwe Doh Gay

This is a drawing of a half-sun, half-moon. I drew it because I thought of the daytime and nighttime, so I decided to draw a half-sun, half-moon picture. I really thought that it would look cool because we see the sun and the moon every day.

I really like how the moon and the sun turned out and how the blue looks on the drawing. Also, I like how one blue is showing the nighttime and the other blue is showing the day time, but I think the stars need a little work. For this drawing I used makers and pencil. Overall, I think I did well on the drawing.

For my next drawing, I am thinking of drawing another half-half picture because of how the half-sun and half-moon turned out.

REVIEW: ‘Cowboy Carter’ proves Beyoncé really can do anything

By: Charlie St. Dennis

Weeks ago, I wrote in anticipation of Beyoncé’s new album. The singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” had just been released, and producer Killah B was quoted as saying, “Let’s just say, she’s (Beyoncé) on the approach of shocking the world.”

One month later, I can confirm that Killah B was right. ‘Cowboy Carter’ is currently occupying the top 27 slots on the Apple Music Country Charts, all the songs are charting on Global Spotify, became the most streamed album in a single day in 2024, occupies the top spot on Billboard Country Albums, and is headed for a third week at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 at press time.

In her announcement post, Beyoncé writes that the album “[W]as born out of an experience that (she) had years ago where (she) did not feel welcomed… and it was very clear that (she) wasn’t.” This is in reference to when the Country Music Association Awards invited Beyoncé and The Chicks to perform “Daddy Lessons” from her sixth studio album, ‘Lemonade’. While the performance was acclaimed by critics and also gave the CMAs their highest viewership, many country music fans and audience members criticized Beyoncé’s attendance claiming she wasn’t country enough. As a result of this, CMAA deleted all promotional material and footage of Beyoncé’s performance, succumbing to the hate.

Unlike the Country Music Association, Beyoncé did NOT succumb to the hate, and researched the history of Western culture and country music and its African-American roots. And from that, we were blessed with ‘Cowboy Carter.’

I’d argue that despite having the blessings of country legends, including Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Linda Martell, Reba McEntire, just to name a few, this is much more than just a country album. This is not ‘country’, this is a rebirth. For so long, so many music listeners have been blind to the history of country music and the songs that define it. Beyoncé has opened eyes and exposed things that many listeners never knew. For example, Beyoncé covers The Beatles’ “Blackbird” on the album. She features 4 up-and-coming black women in country music: Tanner Adell, Reyna Roberts, Tiera Kennedy, and Brittany Spencer. When people heard the original version, it was said that the song was inspired by the call of a blackbird in India. Paul McCartney, the writer of the song, revealed in 2022 that the “Black bird” of the song should be “interpreted as ‘black girl’” as the song was intended to be a waking call in the Civil Rights movement. It is poetic that Beyoncé is choosing to spotlight black women in an environment that doesn’t always welcome them for this song, considering that is exactly what McCartney was going for.

In the opening track, “Ameriican Requiem,” Beyoncé declares that “there’s a lot of talking going on, while I (Beyoncé) sing my song” and that “there’s a lotta chatter in here, but let me make myself clear.” This sets the perfect tone for the album. It’s a tone of pride and relentlessness. It’s a tone that says “say what you want, but I’m not gonna listen.” We hear songs like “16 Carriages,” “My Rose,” and “Protector,” which affirm Beyoncé’s love of her family, and how she balances her family life. We hear interludes from Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Linda Martell, who give their blessings and introduce some of the album’s more fun tracks, like “Texas Hold ‘Em,” “Jolene,” and “Ya Ya.” We also get a speculated sequel to “Jolene” in “Daughter,” which as of right now, is my favorite song off the album. We hear genre-bending tracks like “Bodyguard,” “Spaghettii,” “Riiverdance,” and “Tyrant,” that playfully explore different genres and mash them together. The album also includes features from industry stars such as Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, Shaboozey, and Willie Jones.

Lots more could be said about the lyrical depth of this album and the deep meaning and thought behind each track, and I think it’s all a very worthy and necessary conversation. I also think this is just really good music. Whether you are a casual Beyoncé fan, or a casual country music fan, you can listen to this album and acknowledge the work and genius behind it, while also acknowledging the beautifully catchy music right in front of you.

‘Cowboy Carter’ serves as a melodious homage to home, to welcoming, and to origin. It’s a perfect 10/10 for me, maybe even an 11/10. I hold the controversial belief that this might just be Beyoncé’s magnum opus. Not because all of the songs are perfect, but because she stepped into an environment where she knew she wouldn’t be fully welcomed, and made room for herself, all while making music that can appeal to everyone.

My favorite tracks as of current are: “Ameriican Requiem,” “Daughter,” “16 Carriages,” and “Tyrant.” If those tracks are all tied for first, all the others are tied for second. Even the interludes aren’t worth the skip. That’s how you know there’s no one in the game quite like Beyoncé.

More features added to the ‘Minecraft’ 1.21 update

By: Daniel Kendle

Since my last article on this subject, Mojang (the company that heads ‘Minecraft’) has continued adding features to the 1.21 update, of which is still unnamed. I was originally going to post a comment under my first review explaining the new additions, but there were enough that they warranted an entire follow-up all together.

This recent batch of features have been said to be the last major components of 1.21, so I probably won’t have to make a 3rd article. Once we get a name drop alongside some possible smaller features I’ll then post a comment under this article reviewing the new stuff. Until then, however, let’s begin!

Beginning with changes to existing gameplay, let’s talk about Wolf Armor and wolves in general. The former has had some neat additions, such as being able to be dyed by the player for further customization. The armor also works differently now; instead of reducing the damage taken by the wolf, it now absorbs all damage that would have normally been taken by the hound until it breaks. This means that, if your dog “accidentally” falls off a 1,000 meter drop, it’ll survive (but probably without any armor now).

We’ve also gotten 8 new wolf variants, each spawning in its respective biome. This is a feature that players have been asking for since cats got new coats in the game a few years ago, so this and the armor change make for great additions.

There’s also an updated way to get Wind Charges from the Breeze mob. Instead of dropping them plainly, the slain monster will now drop a Breeze Rod, which can be crafted into a few things. One of those are Wind Charges, and placing a single rod into your crafting grid interface nets you 4 charges. They function identically to how they did before.

That’s a good segway into the new stuff added. Probably my new favorite feature added in this update is a new weapon: the Mace. Crafted with a Breeze Rod under a new block called the Heavy Core (which doesn’t have a big use right now), it’s unique because of how you fight with it. The weapon’s main quirk is that it scales in damage dealt to an enemy depending on how high you fall with it. From my research there’s no cap to the scale, so you can rack up obscene amounts of damage from a tall fall.

Maces also come with 3 new enchantments, special buffs that can be applied using Lapis Lazuli at the dedicated Enchanting Table. The first is Density, which heightens damage dealt when falling, making it even stronger. The enchantment ranges from level 1 (I) to level 5 (V). The second is Breach, which bypasses the armor protection of an opponent by 15% each level (I – IV). Finally, there’s an enchantment that you can’t obtain from the table, being exclusive to the Trial Chambers: Wind Burst. The enchantment spawns a Wind Charge under your feet every time you hit a foe with the Mace, launching you in the air and allowing for combos.

The Mace is one of my new favorite features from this update, maybe even my favorite. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a new weapon in the game, the last being the Crossbow from 2019.

5 new paintings have been added to the game: “Unpacked,” “Prairie Ride,” “Meditative,” “Humble,” and “Baroque.” The 5 paintings all look pretty great; it’s been over a decade since new variations were added to the game. There’s not a lot to say about them, however. While a lot more different from past paintings, they fit into the game’s aesthetic well.

2 new Armor Trims have been added. Armor Trims are items that can be applied to your armor with a gemstone or ore to give it a colorful trim. There’s upwards of a dozen different trims, found in structures throughout the world. The new pair are found in the Trial Chambers, and are called the “Bolt” and “Flow” templates. The former looks like sheets of metal with screws built in, and the latter spirals of wind. I prefer “Bolt,” personally.

There’s also 3 new sherds. Pottery Sherds (“sherds” being a term in archeology for a piece of ancient pottery) are normally found through brushing Suspicious Sand and Suspicious Gravel in structures in the game. These new sherds vary, since you can only find them already-built into pots found inside the Trial Chambers. The sherds depict a Breeze, a spiral, and an ax.

2 banner patterns have been added, which, when used, imprint a specific picture onto banners. The patterns depict a Breeze and a spiral, the same as the sherd designs.

The last part of this “New Additions to Older Features” section are 4 new potions. Potions can be drunk or thrown, and grant specific effects to those with the drinks. The Potion of Infestation has a chance to spawn a Silverfish every time the affected entity is hit. The Potion of Oozing causes 2 Slime mobs to spawn after the entity dies. The Potion of Weaving makes cobwebs appear after an entity dies. Finally, the Potion of Wind Charging lets loose a Wind Charge after the entity dies.

Each of these effects has a splash variant (letting you throw the potion at others), a lingering variant (the same as the splash variant, but leaves behind a cloud of the effect) and an arrow tipped with the potion.

The final major feature is Ominous Trials. These events can be triggered in a Trial Chamber by drinking an Ominous Bottle, and cause nearby Trial Spawners to spawn beefier, stronger mobs with better armor and weapons. Some of the potions from earlier will routinely spawn above you or opponents, causing more havoc. These new trials will give much better loot, however, including the Heavy Core. This is the only way to get the item, and therefore the Mace.

Ominous Trials have a new type of vaults, too: Ominous Vaults. These contain the core, as well as the Flow Armor Trim, Flow Banner Pattern, Wind Burst enchantments and some valuable older items, like blocks of diamonds and Golden Apples.

Also, just as I’m writing this part, it’s been revealed that new music is coming to the game. None has been released yet, but I’m excited to hear the new tracks.

While ‘Minecraft’ 1.21 isn’t out yet, it’s likely to come within the next couple months, and I’m still very excited.

‘Found Heaven’ album review

By: Sophia Elmstrom

‘Found Heaven’ by Conan Gray is Conan’s third album and most recent one. This album came out April 5th, 2024 and is brand new. This album has 13 songs and is a total of 36 minutes long.

This new album is very out of Conan Gray’s comfort zone, most of his music is slow paced whereas these songs are more funky and amped up. Many of the songs on this new album are inspired by popular 80’s and 90’s music. For example, a song on this album is called
“Eye of the Night” inspired by “Eye of the Tiger”.

The song titles are:

  • Found Heaven
  • Never Ending Song
  • Fainted Love
  • Lonely Dancers
  • Alley Rose
  • The Final Flight
  • Miss You
  • Bourgeoisieses
  • Forever With Me
  • Eye Of The Night
  • Boys & Girls
  • Killing Me
  • Winner

My top three songs on this album are “Alley Rose”, “Bourgeoisieses”, and “Lonely Dancers”. Both “Alley Rose” and “Lonely Dancers” were released as singles before this album came out on April 5th.

“Alley Rose” is inspired by the album ‘Abbey Road’ which was by the Beatles. Conan wrote this while he was on his way home from London after getting his heart broken there. “Alley Rose” is one of my favorites on the album because the lyricism is truly beautiful as well as the music. 10/10

“Bourgeoisieses” is a very upbeat song about the rich. This song is unlike anything Conan has written and I like it very much for that reason. This song is intentionally misspelled and is the “plural” of bourgeoisie. ‘Bourgeoisieses’ makes fun of rich people and Conan says that this whole song is just supposed to be funny. I really enjoy it and it is very very catchy. 7/10

“Lonely Dancers” was a single off of this album and is about getting ghosted and being confused. I like “Lonely Dancers” because of its upbeat and catchy music. I believe that this is the best song off of the album with the best music while “Alley Rose” has the best lyrics. 10/10

Overall, I give this album an 8/10 because it took me a while to get used to the new style of music. If you enjoy 80’s music I would definitely recommend this album because it is a modernized version of 80s music.

Why some people don’t have an internal monologue

By: Hermekay Dehaney

Image created with Wonder

The human brain is very complex and fascinating, it is capable of numerous cognitive processes that shape how we think and how we act. One fascinating thing about our mental function is the inner monologue, also known as the “voice inside your head,” or “inner voice, ” it’s where we can hear our thoughts and have conversations within our mind with ourselves.

We might see a lot of depictions of inner monologues when reading first-perspective books, or when a show/movie shows a character thinking to themselves.

However, some reports show that about  30 – 50% of people don’t have an internal monologue. The absence of an inner monologue, known as “aphantasia”  can lead to various questions surrounding the complexity of the human mind, and why some people don’t have an inner monologue.

While the exact reasons are not fully known, research has found many factors that may contribute to it. A potential factor  could be a correlation between the dorsal stream and the ventral stream, The dorsal and ventral are two language tracks that help form sounds. A research conducted in 2019, shows that the development of inner speech is based on how your dorsal stream is developed.

Cultural and environmental factors can influence how your brain processes different information in your early years. People who don’t develop a strong inner monologue in childhood may simply never get it later in life.

Genetics also play a role in the lack of an inner monologue. Research found that aphantasia can run in a family. This implies that there are some hereditary factors that lead to the lack of an inner monologue.

Having no internal monologue doesn’t indicate a person having mental challenges.  People with aphantasia have no issues with their memory, nor do they have trouble thinking and problem solving, they simply just view the world differently.

Even though the reasons for not having an inner monologue are not fully understood yet, factors such as the brain cognitive function, environmental factors, and genetics appear to play a role.

The Arcerium Rising Exclusion Zone: ARCERIUM RISING 2

By: Hoaseng Thao

Note: This story goes over the themes of war and crisis in a different world

THE ZONE

The Arcerium Rising Exclusion Zone is a designated exclusion zone established by the Organization of Nations, or the ON, and is located on the Arcerian continent, dividing the habitable zones from areas contaminated by Arcerium and Arsoulium. The Arcerium Rising Exclusion Zone is commonly referred to as “The Zone”.

The Zone is a highly contested region that is mainly contested within the borders of the Federal States of Arcasia, with many factions fighting for control over specific regions.

ARCERIUM AND ARSOULIUM

Arcerium is a natural element that is used to power mega structures such as mega cities, ships, and spacecraft. Arcerium also acts as a propellent to its sister element, Arsoulium, which has side effects that can rapidly heal dead cells and is commonly used as an opioid to treat cancer, however it can place users into a rabies like state in prolonged exposure.

BACKGROUND

The cause of the exclusion zone was due to the rapid eruptions of multiple Arcerium pockets across the continent, which resulted in Arcerium and Arsoulium contaminating the majority of the continent. The nations of Arceria, The Republic of Krinia, The Federal States of Arcasia, and The United Republic of Alakis, were all affected heavily by this event, with an estimated 1.5 billion people being left in the zones. This event is commonly dubbed as the “Arcerium Rising” event.

KRINIA

“Flag of the Republic of Krinia”

Before the Arcerium Rising Event, Krinia had engaged in a war against its neighbor, Alakis, after their invasion into Krinian territory, with both nations calling upon their allies to join the war, resulting in the start of the Second Continentals War. This war would be forced to a ceasefire after the Arcerium Rising Event occurred, and with the presence of Krinia’s allies, The Polaris Alliance Treaty Organization or PATO, was able to quickly respond to the crisis, and evacuate millions of refugees to safe zones.

ALAKIS

“Flag of The United Republic of Alakis”

Having started the Second Continentals War, Alakis was unprepared to fight a defensive war as they had poured all their resources to their Krinian offensive, which left large populated areas to be contaminated by Arcerium and Arsoulium. Alakis’ allies, the Croatoke Defensive Pact or CDP, did little to help with the contaminated areas as they were mainly focused on keeping PATO forces at bay, resulting in millions perishing as a result.

ARCASIA

“Flag of the Federal States of Arcasia”

Arcasia, having not involved itself in the war, had other issues at hand. A month earlier, Arcasia’s government brutally suppressed protests against State Controlled Arcerium refinery plants, and on the onset of the Arcerium Rising Event, the people of Arcasia began calling for independence against the government, and started the Arcasian Civil War.

This civil war was kept under wraps by the federal government, as they had installed a nationwide firewall and lockdown to prevent information from getting out. For ten years, Arcasia had kept everything under wraps until a coup led by General Tomia Lukoskiv, overthrew the government and called for an immediate intervention by the Organization of Nations (ON), to which they accepted.

ARCASIAN CIVIL WAR

The civil war is still waging on, with the Arcasian government being supported by the ON to fight a brutal campaign against rebelling groups, such as the Independent States of Arceria Organization, a collective of rebelling states joined in a combined effort to gain independence from Arcasia.

It is unclear if there will be resolution to the civil war, but it is clear that it will continue for the foreseeable future.

Top 3 phones of 2024

By: Hyde Moua

Image created with Imagine

As of right now, these are the best phones of 2024 and I think they are worth their prices, especially with all of their unique features and specs they have within their slim design of a device, I think that these phones deserve to be the best phones of 2024. I personally feel that Android phones and Samsung phones are better than iPhones due to more benefits but overall these are amazing phones that everyone should try if they have the chance to use them.

Coming in at the number one spot is the “Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra”. The “Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra” takes the number one spot due to a better overall performance in design, display, performance, and battery life compared to other Samsungs and iPhones. The “Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra’s” main advantage is its longer battery life which can last 56 hours when used normally, and 15.5 hours under heavy usage.

In the number two spot is the “iPhone 15”. The “iPhone 15” takes the second place spot because of its similar performance to the “Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra” and its better camera quality compared to other phones. The “iPhone 15” also has a long software support system, which means it will be supported with updates, bug fixes, and security patches over longer periods of time.

Lastly, the number three spot for best phones of 2024 as of right now is the “iPhone 15 Pro Max”. The “iPhone 15 Pro Max” takes the third place because of its similar features to the “iPhone 15”, but isn’t as good because of its slightly slower features. The “iPhone 15 Pro Max” has a slower screen and slightly less battery life compared to the first two phones. In my opinion, this phone is just as good as the “iPhone 15”.

Benefits of composting

By: Trump Vang

In our world today, trash is a substantial part of our lives. Just in the United States alone, according to Trashcansunlimited.com, there is 146.1 million tons of waste in landfills, which is equivalent to the weight of 24 Great Pyramids of Giza. It’s an enormous problem in our lives, as it continues to pollute and spread into our environments and systems.

There are a few ways that trash can be mitigated. You’ve most definitely heard of recycling before, which is the process of converting waste and garbage into new materials and objects. One other common method is composting.

What is Composting?

If you didn’t know, composting is the process of recycling organic matter into a nutrient-rich soil or mulch through decomposition. You may see it in your school or at a local dump but its ability to turn food waste into compost is unmatched and integral in diminishing waste.

What Can I Compost?

Just like recycling, you can compost at home too! Though it’s important to know what you can compost. Put simply, try to only compost fruit and vegetable scraps. This can be anything from fresh, cooked, or moldy. Alongside this, it also accounts for leaves, coffee grounds, and grass cuttings.

There are other things that you can compost, but it’s often not recommended to do so. These items include meat and dairy products, which can spoil and attract pests, as well as lawn trimmings which may contain pesticides.

How Can I Compost?

You can either place your compost at a drop off center, or you can compost yourself in a compost bin. To compost, there are four different things that you need to create, and you need a proper combination of these elements to create a good compost: nitrogen, carbon, air, and water.

To achieve these individual elements you need specific things: Greens for Nitrogen, Browns for Carbon, and Oxygen and Water. Often greens, such as grass clippings and food scraps have proper nitrogen for the mix. Browns such as dead leaves, twigs and paper can be added to achieve a proper amount of carbon. For those last two elements, it’s integral to keep proper aeration and moisture within the environment.

Placing all of the materials in a compost bin, you would always want 3 parts brown to 2 parts green to get a proper combination. Make sure to place your compost bin within a dry area for the best growth.

It can often take 2 weeks to a few months for the compost to be ready. When ready, you can use compost for your garden and properly give your plants a nutritious start in their soils.

Going out of your way to compost your waste can go a long way in the big scheme of things. If everyone just decided to limit their trash going into landfills, we all could have a healthier lifestyle on Earth, saving the planet one piece of trash at a time.
