Taylor Swift Chai Cookies recipe/review
By: Addison Strack & Sophie Johnson
Recipe:
Ingredients:
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- ½ cup of vegetable oil, such as candle, sunflower, or almond oil
- ½ cup granulated of sugar, plus additional sugar for topping
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 packet chai tea
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, or the seeds of 1 vanilla bean
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350º f and line a baking sheet with parchment paper, or grease generously with baking spray
- Using a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter at medium speed for about 1 minute, or until smooth
- Add the vegetable oil (may not fully incorporate with the butter, some separation is okay)
- Add the granulated sugar, powdered sugar, egg and vanilla, beating on medium speed until all ingredients are fully incorporated
- Cut 1 chai tea packet and empty the crushed tea leaves into the batter
- Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt, or beat on low speed until the flour is fully mixed in
- For large cookies add two tablespoons of dough to the baking sheet, and for small cookies add one tablespoon to the sheet
- Press the dough evenly onto the baking sheet until it is about ¼ of an inch thick
- Sprinkle some sugar on the top of the cookies
- Bake for 12-14 minutes for larger cookies and 8-10 minutes for smaller cookies, or until they reach a golden brown color
- Let the cookies cool and set on the baking sheet for about ten minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack
Icing (optional):
- Combine 1 cup of powdered sugar, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, and 3 tablespoons of milk or eggnog (you can add more or less milk/eggnog to change the consistency of the icing)
Review:
If you enjoy fall and winter recipes, then you may want to try Taylor Swift’s famous chai cookie recipe. This recipe screams cooler weather with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and overall chai flavor. It is a spin off of Wilson’s sugar cookies, and it tastes like a more flavorful snickerdoodle cookie. In this article we will cover how these cookies came to be, and give a more in depth review of these delicious cookies.
Before we review these cookies, we want to give a bit of background about their origin. These cookies were first made by Taylor Swift in 2014, when she baked a version of Wilson’s sugar cookies. She has enjoyed baking, and wanted to try out this recipe, as she loves fall, and it is the perfect fall cookie. Fans begged her to release the recipe for the cookies, and eventually she obliged, posting the instructions on tumblr.
Her cookies began to gain more and more popularity when she made these cookies for her 1989 secret sessions listening party. During this listening party, she invited hundreds of fans into her homes across the world. She baked tons of these cookies for her fans, and they were able to meet her cats, hear the new album a month before everyone else, and get a tour of her home.
These cookies are not only a great fall and winter recipe, but they are also a reminder of Taylor Swift’s generosity.
Overall, these cookies were good, but there were a couple of things that could have helped to improve the recipe.
When we tried these cookies, we noticed that they were less flavorful than we had initially predicted. We agreed that adding two or even three packets of chai could have helped to amp up the flavor. We also agreed that adding cinnamon to either the dough, or the top of the cookies before baking could also help to add more flavor to the cookies.
Adding the icing on top is a must. By itself, the cookie is good, but with the icing it is even better. The icing adds more flavor and sweetness to the cookies, and also helps it to have a smoother texture when you eat it. We made the icing with milk, because we couldn’t find eggnog. We both think that with eggnog, the icing might be even better and more flavorful.
Another issue that we ran into with these cookies was with the vegetable oil. We couldn’t find canola oil, so instead we ended up using a little bit of olive oil instead. We couldn’t taste the olive oil in the cookies, but we wanted to mention this to make sure our review is one hundred percent honest. We weren’t sure if the olive oil could have masked some of the flavors in the cookies, or affected the texture of the cookies, so we wanted to bring this up to have a fair rating. Eventually, we are planning on trying the cookies with canola oil and more chai tea packets to see if we can improve the flavor of the cookie.
After reviewing our errors when making the cookies, and thinking of ways to improve the flavor, we have decided to rate the cookies a 4 out of 5.
We agreed that our use of olive oil could have been a big contributor to the flavor of the cookies, and could have affected the flavor without us realizing. We docked one point because we think that the chai flavor was a bit less strong than we hoped. Overall though, these cookies were good, and we would both make them again.

Tips for studying
By: Aliana Romo
Using time wisely during school is hard for many students, myself included. Although there’s many ways to work around pocrationation and bad work habits.
One of my favorite ways to avoid procrastinating is to study somewhere besides my house. This is especially for homework and outside school assignments. It’s easier to get distracted by phones and other objects around. Some of my favorite places to go and study are the library, outdoors or a local coffee shop. Some of these places can get a little loud, for example a coffee shop or studying outside at a park can be busy at times. Although with headphones and concentration it can be easy to stay on task. Picking a good study location is key to learning more about yourself and your learning qualities.
Another way to stay focused is to eliminate distractions. This can easily be to remove electronics such as phones, headphones, shows, etc. Many people get distracted by cell phones and it’s one of the worst distractions there is. It’s easy to lose focus quickly whether it’s by a notification or just wanting to be on your phone. Some ways to eliminate electronics from the area is to power off your phone, leave it in another room or to put it on do not disturb.
Taking out headphones or pausing any background noise like a movie or music can also help, even though for some people having music helps them concentrate. ‘Medical News Today’ says that “Music may help reduce stress, improve some aspects of memory, and improve cognitive function, which may all help with concentration and focus when studying.” The article also says that it can suggest the opposite too, causing distractions and getting lost in thought.
An additional way to stay on task is not to overwork yourself. It’s important to take breaks at points and revisit the subject later. Ways to take breaks is to go on a short walk or give yourself 10-15 minutes of relaxing. This can be hard to do if after the end of the break you’re feeling unproductive, although it’s important to remember that the main goal is to finish the work.
Setting goals often helps people finish homework and assignments more quickly. This is by setting achievable goals and focusing on finishing. This helps to concentrate on the work and getting it done, which helps to get motivation to finish.
Lastly, besides assignments outside of school it’s important to use time wisely in school and get work done then. Many times students are more distracted in school because of friends, being tired, and many other things. It’s also important to utilize help when needed; teachers are there to help you understand things. It’s good to ask questions when confused to make sure that you understand the assignment and topic. This can make things a lot less stressful and easier. To get rid of distractions while at school, the other tips still come into place. This means to stop talking with friends, avoid going on your phone and concentrating on the work.
Studying is about being able to figure out what tips help yourself more. What works for other people may not work for you.
The impact of ‘808s and Heartbreak’ by Kanye West
By: Ricky Perez Cardoza
‘808s and Heartbreak’, Kanye West’s 4th studio album, was released in 2008 and is regarded as one of the most, or the most, influential albums for hip hop ever made.
To start, we’ll get the story of the album out of the way and also its history. This album by Kanye was never planned at all and the original album he was going to release was an album finishing off the now trilogy of his college albums, making it a quadrilogy, and was an album that would’ve sounded like ‘The College Dropout’ and ‘Late Registration’. Things changed for Kanye when his then perfect life went into shambles by him losing his mother.
Donda West was announced dead on November 10, 2007, when she was 58 years old after a post plastic surgery procedure went wrong. She had liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast reduction. It was found after her passing that her death was caused by heart failure due to multiple post operative factors. During this time, Kanye also lost his girlfriend at the time, Alexis Phifer, who ended things with him.
Kanye had to stop working on his next album and completely scraped it all together to start working on ‘808s and Heartbreak’. This time Kanye had to completely change his sound from egotistical, narcissistic, bars with sped-up soul samples, and completely hip-hop-focused rap songs, to something that he could portray the emotions he was feeling in a way that would come across as hurt, guilt, and tribute to his mother.
Kanye West then went completely south and gave us his 12-song album that would completely change the way new rappers would make music. Kanye ditches the soul samples and makes original beats with a focus on the heavy-hitting electro and dark 808s with pop singing filtered auto-tune. Also, using mostly pianos and humming from him, to make a melodic feel to the instrumentals was something that people in hip-hop had never seen before.
He also doesn’t rap on this album, or at least not like he did on his other previous albums. He sings throughout most of the album. He shows us emotional singing. It’s one of Kanye’s saddest listens for a lot of people who knew what happened to him. But fans of Kanye West didn’t like this album at the time.
The people who did like him were the kids and teenagers who loved his emotional singing and hard-hitting 808s combined with hip-hop. This is what most people regard as the start of the influence this single album had. By getting attention from the younger generation it would go on to influence any young artists during this time to make music just like this.
The influence wasn’t instant either; it was something that took time and it started to show with the come-up of rappers such as Lil Uzi Vert, Juice Wrld, XXXTENTACION, Trippie Red, Post Malone, Future, Drake, and Kid Cudi. It’s hard to think of these rappers without the influence that 808s has on them. We got tracks like Lil Uzi verts 2018 hit: “XO TOUR LIFE” where we see the hardest influence of ‘808s and Heartbreak’. We see the same in Juice Wrld’s hit “Lucid Dreams”. Lil Uzi Vert and Juice Wrld both regard this album that “saved their life” as one of their favorite albums ever.
Listening to songs like “Heartless” and “Street Lights” of ‘808s and Heartbreak’ we can hear the clear influence these songs and the album have on songs like “XO TOUR LIFE” and on rappers as a whole. No other album has ever had an impact on the sound of future generations like ‘808s and Heartbreak’ and that is why most people regard it as “The most influential album ever”.

A lot of opinions people have on this new iPhone 15 is that there are not a lot of new features that make it different from the iPhone 14.
Some people even compare it to a Porsche saying they’re just making small changes, and making the car too expensive for every little change that won’t make a difference. But after a certain amount, they started to give the Porsche more respect, and have seen how far they’ve gotten.
At the end, what they’re trying to say is even the little progress can lead up to big things.

Movie review ‘The Black Phone’
By: Beverly Stinson
*Warning: This review contains spoilers
‘The Black Phone’ is a thriller-drama movie released on June 24th, 2022. It’s about a 13-year-old boy who gets kidnapped by a serial kidnapper and communicates with the ghosts of the kidnapper’s past victims to help him escape. This film is rated ‘R’ for violence, bloody images, profanity, and drug use.
The main charecter in this movie is a 13-year-old boy named Finney Blake. He lives in a small town with his sister and father. He and his sister have a troubled home life with their father being an alcoholic and violent. Finney often gets bullied at school but receives help from Robin Arellano his best friend.
During the first part of the movie multiple kids go missing, most of which are kids Finney knows in some way. It then leads up to Finney’s kidnapping, where after he’s been taken, he wakes up in a small room in a basement. Inside the basement is a bed, toilet, and a black phone. The kidnapper (known as “The Grabber”) continuously speaks to Finney, seemingly trying to make small talk. The Grabber mentions the phone and how it doesn’t work.
Even though The Grabber states that the phone doesn’t work, it eventually starts ringing, and when Finney picks it up, the voice of a kid speaks through the phone; the kid being one of The Grabbers victims. After that, The Grabber’s other victims start calling him, with all of them giving him tips on how to escape.
Finney’s sister Gwen is a major character in this movie. When Finney goes missing, she tries to find him with some new senses that she has.
‘My review’
When I first saw the trailers for ‘The Black Phone’, I didn’t think I’d watch it. I’m not so big on thriller or horror, especially movies that have to do with kidnapping. But after a year of it being out, I decided to watch it (mostly because of edits of characters I saw). But before watching it, I had done so much research that I spoiled everything for myself, which isn’t the first time I’ve done that.
I do wanna say even though it’s already mentioned in the R rating that this movie does have a lot of violent scenes, some of which are of Finney and Gwen’s father. So, if that’s a hard topic for you then take caution when reading.
So, even though I was skeptical about watching it at first, I will honestly say that it’s a great movie. There’s always so much suspense and the storyline of not just Finney’s story but also Gwen’s and the ghost boys is so thought out. I love how they mix a realistic scenario with the supernatural; when movies or shows do that it makes it more interesting and original.
I like how they touch on bad households with both the siblings and The Grabber. It is said that The Grabber ends up the way he is because of how his father treated him. He started kidnapping 13-14-year-old boys who he deemed bad, to punish them like his father did to him. Which ya-know, does not justify his actions in any way. Actually, as I’m getting into the fandom, I’m noticing that no one really likes him, and that’s actually pretty surprising to me as I am also in fandoms like ‘Scream’ and ‘IT’ and even though the villains in those movies did bad things, the fandom still seems to like them (myself included).
And other than the siblings and The Grabber, one other character apparently had a troubled home life as well, this character being Vance Hopper, who is actually my favorite character. Vance doesn’t have a lot of scenes but based off of his character, and what the actors have said, you can kinda guess how his life is.
A lot of people might say that this is a lot for one movie, but seeing as how it’s based in the late 70s it’s sorta realistic. Since back then it was more acceptable to treat your kids that way, or at least people didn’t talk about it as much.
I really think it’s great that they talk about it, because tons of movies try to dodge topics like that instead of facing them.
So, this next thing I like about it does include some spoilers so take caution!
My favorite part of the entire movie was the ghost boys; in total there are 5. In order they are:
- Griffin Stagg
- Billy Showalter
- Vance Hopper
- Bruce Yamada
- Robin Arellano
There would’ve been 6 but the ghost boys wanted to make sure there wasn’t.
There were all different reasons why the grabber took them but all of them are summed up to them being “bad boys”, at least in his eyes. For example, Vance Hopper AKA Pinball Vance, was an extremely violent person, and was a bully. In one scene, he beats up two kids after one of them bumped into him while he was playing pinball, which caused him to lose. He is said to be a borderline sociopath (I don’t believe that but I’m biased).
I would also like to mention the cast as I really love the cast. I really think they couldn’t have done better with the cast; the actors fit the roles so well. My favorite actors are definitely Brady Hepner (Vance), Mason Thames (Finney), and Tristan Pravong (Bruce).
Ever since I got into the fandom I’ve been watching their Instagram lives and watching interviews and they are so awesome. Sadly, they aren’t in a lot of movies or shows, which is so funny because it always seems like the actors I love aren’t in a lot of things.
If you like suspenseful movies, I’d recommend you watch this movie. It does have a little comedy in it if you don’t only like plain thrillers. Remember that it is rated R and that you should be cautious when watching with children or if you are sensitive to blood or violence.
Thank you for reading my review and I hope you enjoy the movie if you decide to watch it. Hopefully my review makes you want to watch it ❤
You can watch ‘The Black Phone’ on Peacock.
‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ series preview
By: Abisola Dosunmu
‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ by Holly Jackson, is coming to the big screen as a television series soon. As of October 2023, there is still no set premiere date. It will be set to air on BBC Three.
So, what do we know so far? Well, the cast has been released. Emma Myers and Zain Iqbal are set to be playing the main characters, Pip and Ravi. The author of the series, Holly Jackson, is well aware of the casting choices for the characters, and has been enthusiastic about it, even speaking out on it, saying, “I am so unbelievably excited that Emma is our Pip. She is phenomenal and this role was truly always meant to be hers. And we found our perfect Ravi in Zain. I can’t wait for us all to be able to watch their scenes. I smile every time I see them together, because I know that we’ve pulled off the impossible, and Emma and Zain are the only two people I would trust to bring these characters to life. Everyone’s going to be just as thrilled as I am.”
So, what’s the book about? Pippa Fitz-Amobi is the 17-year-old protagonist in the book, reinvestigating the death of a beautiful teenage girl named Andie Bell, who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend Sal Singh five years ago in her quiet hometown. Ravi Singh is the younger brother of Sal, a member of a family still broken by their elder son’s death and presumed murder. Together, Pippa and Ravi, working together over a long cold case, work to solve the mystery that has divided their town, and with that, finally put Sal and Andies’ lives to rest. But secrets are too interwoven with each other in their tiny town, and time is running out. The mystery the readers must figure out is, are things really as they seem?
Some other details about the upcoming series is that it’s being filmed in the South West of England, and ‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ is the first in a trilogy, featuring two other books named, ‘Good Girl, Bad Blood’ and ‘As Good as Dead’.
“JewBelong”
By: Mira Kaufman
Antisemitism is a reality in the world and has been progressively getting worse in the United States. Antisemitism is defined as prejudice against Jews, and according to Vanessa Romo, on NPR news, antisemitic incidents in the US worsened by 26% in 2022 alone. This article revealed that in 2022, there were 3,697 acts of harassment, vandalism, and/or assault to Jews and Jewish communities in the US which has been the highest recorded number since they started in 1997.
Targeted shootings, bomb threats, and vandalism have become far too regular leading to synagogues and Jewish communities being forced into hiring police officers for events in order to increase safety.
Antisemitism may be very present today but it is not new. The Holocaust is the most well known and largest act of antisemitism. It took place in the 1930s into the 40s with the result of over 6 million Jews murdered.
Not only is antisemitism a physical act but can also be shown through Jewish stereotypes and “nicknames”. Many Jewish people are working to fight these stereotypes and to educate society on Judaism and the wrongs that are being consciously and unconsciously committed.
An evolving nonprofit organization called “JewBelong” is stepping up to fight antisemitism, to open American society’s eyes, and to help Jewish people in their everyday lives. The leaders of JewBelong are a group of Jewish people who originally started and became registered in Montclair, New Jersey, during the year of 2017. They have since spread across the US. Their current fight is to place vibrant pink billboards around the US with short sayings intending to make one stop, think, and feel. Their boards speak of harsh, true subjects. One says, “Can a billboard end antisemitism? No. But you’re not a billboard.” Another says, “We’re just 78 years since the gas chambers. So no, a billboard calling out Jew hate isn’t an overreaction.” These are just two examples out of many more.
JewBelong has recently come to the Twin Cities too. On University Avenue, the pink billboard has made an appearance. This one states, “Judaism: Come for the girlfriend. Stay for the lack of Hell.” This billboard is extremely hard to miss with that exact goal in mind.
JewBelong’s website: https://www.jewbelong.com/ has the same intentions. It’s pink, vibrant, and uses words going straight to the point. Their website offers guidance on how to celebrate Jewish holidays, weddings, Bris’s, and B’nai Mitzvah. They have links to news articles on their billboards, an educational page, a team page, and so much more. On their team page, they use pictures of themselves, but as children, again with the purpose of making the viewer feel.
JewBelong has the goal of educating people about antisemitism and to ensure that no act is forgotten, including the Holocaust. It is very common for people to forget the worries of the past, but the murder of over 6 million Jews is not something to forget. JewBelong fights to never let this history repeat itself again. So, if you see the vibrant pink billboard, take a look. Pause, think, feel, and educate yourself on the message being shown to you.

Did Pixar fumble with ‘Elemental’?
By M. Ahmadad
“Stunning animation sparks this cross-cultural, high-concept ‘Romeo & Juliet’ romantic comedy, inspired by the periodic chart of elements that one recalls from science class.” (Critic Susan Granger on ‘Elemental’)
‘Elemental’ is one of the most recent Pixar films, released in June 2023. Despite receiving a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes and being generally seen by the media as a cute, likable, and enjoyable film with a nice plot, the movie suffered an unfortunate flop.
The first opening weekend for ‘Elemental’ only made $29 million, and over the span of two months grossed $425 million worldwide. The budget for the movie’s creation was $200 million dollars, so the profit made was much smaller than other Pixar films opening weekend, like ‘Inside Out’ or ‘Coco’.
Prior to the movie’s release, people were skeptical about ‘Elemental’ and didn’t have high hopes. Now that the movie is released, a lot of people are actually quite satisfied with it; the movie having a 4.2 star rating.
The problem likely stems from the promotional marketing strategy for ‘Elemental’. Fans were already skeptical about newer animated children’s films from Disney/Pixar, so seeing the first teaser for ‘Elemental’ made already wary people form assumptions about how the film would go.
The trailers and ads on social media, like TikTok, did not attempt to showcase the two main characters and the chemistry between them, which was the highlight of the actual film. Instead, they tried to go the comedy route and advertise a minor side character, in hopes that he would be endearing to viewers.
However, Clod has less than 3 minutes of screen time in the actual movie, so the amount of time they spent promoting this character lead to people finding it misleading. There was even a short-lived meme where people made sarcastic comments behaving like they cared about Clod, saying that they screamed when he came on screen and cried.
It is generally agreed that the marketing of this movie was not up to par, considering that the trailers decided not to promote much of anything about the two main characters and their relationship, which was the highlight of the actual film.
So, while ‘Elemental’ may not have been given the chance to shine, many people think it’s a touching and beautifully animated film. If you’re considering watching it, it’s recommended to not keep the ads in mind.
You can watch ‘Elemental’ on Disney+.
