Where did Saint Valentine’s Day come from?

By: Ella Tabor

Saint Valentine’s Day occurs on February 14th every year. On this day we celebrate love around the world by gifting our love interests chocolates, candies, teddy bears, flowers and more. Many have wondered “Where did this romantic tradition begin?”

My apologies to the romantics, however, the origins of Valentine’s Day have hardly anything to do with romance. Then why do we connect February the 14th with love?

Well, The legend roots itself in Christian and ancient Roman history. There are 2 versions of the story of Saint Valentine that are mainly told, the only real difference being their position in the church.

The legend depict Saint Valentine as a priest (or a bishop in the 2nd version) of Terni, who performed secret marriages to young lovers after the Roman emperor Claudius outlawed marriage for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers.

When Claudius caught wind of this, he ordered him to death. According to legend, while Valentine was imprisoned, he healed his captor’s blind daughter. He fell in love with her and before his beheading on February 14th, he sent her a letter.

This letter is believed to be the first Valentine’s greeting ever sent. He signed the letter with, “From your Valentine”. An expression still used to this day.

The validity of this story is argued. Historians have not decided between the 2, or if there is truth in either of them. “The two stories that everyone talks about, the bishop and the priest, they’re both so similar that it makes me suspicious”. Says Bruce Forbes, a professor of religious studies at Morningside college in Iowa.

Even though the story of Valentine was around, Valentine’s Day only started becoming a celebration of love starting in the Middle Ages, mainly thanks to English poet, Geoffrey Chaucer.

Around the 1370s, Chaucer wrote “Parliament of Fowls,” in this poem he said, “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day when every bird comes to choose its mate”. Inspired by Chaucer, soon others started writing their own poems of love called “Valentines” for their lovers.

Thus connecting February the 14th with love.

Joe “Brrr” Burrow & Cincinnati Bengal’s phenomenal season

By: Salman Said

Joe “Brrr” Burrow has had an outstanding postseason this year. His path to the Super Bowl has been remarkable, from defeating the Las Vegas Raiders to battling to remain alive against the AFC South’s top seed, Tennessee Titans. Joe Burrow led his team to its first AFC North title since 1988.

During the AFC Championship game, the Kansas City Chiefs, the team lead by 2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes, seemed invincible. DraftKing, the popular sports betting app, had the Kansas City Chiefs as the favorites to win by a large margin, and over 58% of all game bets were on the Chiefs to win.

The game appeared to be over before it even started, and the odds against the Bengals further grew when the Chiefs took a commanding 21-3 lead in the second quarter. During halftime, though, something sparked in the now-nicknamed Joe “Brrr” Burrow.

In what some might say was his greatest performance, Joe threw 2 touchdowns in the second half and battled through the pressure. He then led his Bengals to an upset win in overtime against the Chiefs.

Joe has been dubbed Joe “Brrr” Burrow for wearing a fur coat and a brand new JP9 diamond pendant to the stadium for AFC Championship game. When questioned if the diamonds were real, Joe said, “They’re definitely real. I think I make too much money to have fake ones.” His moniker “Brrr” is derived from the new slang term “ice”, which means diamonds. His diamonds are “icy”, therefore the onomatopoeia “Brrr” has a double-meaning to it, as it also refers to his “cool” demeanor when playing.

Joe’s incredible postseason will come to a storybook ending on Sunday, February 13th. He’ll be facing the 2019 Super Bowl runner-ups, and NFC West first seed, LA Rams in this now, so-called, legendary Super Bowl match-up. The star-studded Rams, led by Matthew Stafford, and ostracized wide-receiver Odel Beckham Jr, will be going against Joe “Brrr” Burrow and Super-Star Rookie, Ja’Marr Chase.

Chinese New Year traditions

By: Ava Bleifuss

Chinese New Year started on February 1st this year, and it is a festival that celebrates the lunar new year. Here are some of the traditions that are connected to the New Year celebrations.

The Lion and Dragon dances:

The Lion and Dragon dances during Chinese New Year have a special meaning.

The lion represents strength and superiority. The dragon represents power, excellences, and boldness.

These dances are meant to scare off the evil spirits and monsters, while also bringing in good luck and prosperity.

Food:

One tradition for Chinese New Year is to have a big dinner with the whole family. China is really big in size, so depending on where you live the food for Chinese New Year can vary. Some foods that are common to eat are longevity noodles, whole steamed fish, and sticky rice balls.

Longevity noodles (长寿面 chángshòumiàn)are long noodles where their length means to have a wish for a long life full of happiness.

When it comes to whole steamed fish(清蒸鱼 qīngzhēngyú)half of it is eaten for dinner, and the other half is eaten the next day, because people want to prolong the fish. The meaning of this is to have abundance in the new year, and live prosperously with the hope of a harmonious life.

Sticky rice balls(汤圆 tāngyuán)are sticky which makes them stick to each other. This symbolizes unity, family togetherness, and spending time with your beloved family members during Chinese New Year.

Red envelopes:

Giving out red envelopes(红包 hóngbāo) to those around you is a very important tradition for Chinese New Year.

Normally, red envelopes are given to children or those of the younger generations. This is to show you wish for them to have good fortune, prosperity, and good blessings for the year ahead of them.

Firecrackers and fireworks:

One reason for using firecrackers and fireworks is to celebrate the new year. However, there is a reason that people started doing this that isn’t just for celebrating the new year.

There was a story that during Chinese New Year a monster came to the villages and destroyed everything. The villagers tried everything to scare it away, but the only thing that worked were firecrackers and fireworks.

Every year people use firecrackers and fireworks to scare away any evil spirits that may be near, to then allow them to have a good new year.

Can yoga improve your mental health?

By: Grace Blumer-Lamotte

Yoga is the practice of your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is a physical form of exercise moving your body through various positions. Yoga comes in many different forms. Yoga can be physical exercises, such as vinyasa classes, which boost your heart rate with movement. It can also be mindfulness practice. Another form of yoga is breathing exercises.

Yoga can benefit your mental health. If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, or other psychiatric disorders, yoga could help improve it.

The connection between yoga and your mental health is this: It creates a safe, quiet, and still place for your body and mind. It can also create a space for you to express yourself.

According to Dai Manuel, a fitness speaker, these are 7 effective ways to improve your mental health with regular yoga practice: Increase your self-confidence, improve your level of concentration, make you physically fit, avoid stress, good posture, peaceful mind, and increase the quality of your sleep.

The way yoga increases your self confidence is by giving you a peaceful and private space for yourself to heal and learn from past mistakes.

Yoga can improve your level of concentration by focusing on an object or staring at a long distance view. This can enhance your level of concentration. Each pose takes concentration on what you are doing and where it is going on.

Yoga can also make you physically fit by practicing exercise regularly and putting in the effort.

It can help you avoid stress by having good yoga postures. According to Dai Manuel, “When you practice yoga 2 times a day (it’s enough at least you spare half an hour a day) it makes you feel relaxed and puts you away from your level of stress and helps you to become more healthy and successful in life.”

Good posture can also come from practicing yoga. Yoga can help your body maintain its position and relieve stress and inner pains.

When you first start yoga, it is difficult to find the inner peaceful mind. When you practice yoga more and more you will soon feel and achieve what a peaceful mind feels like. Yoga is poses and breathing practice. Focusing on your breathing can help your brain find your inner peace.

Everyone knows that increasing your quality of sleep is difficult. Again, Dai Manuel has some thoughts on this: “At the end of your day try to spare around 15 minutes for you to recollect all your day memories and sit in your yoga position, try to concentrate on your breathing, which helps you to enter into a state of relaxation, overcoming your day’s hurdle.”

Health benefits to drinking more water

By: Liv MIller

We all know that water is one of the most beneficial contributions to all living things. Plants need water to grow, animals need water to survive, and as humans, so do we.

Not only does water help grow plants that provide food for us to eat, and in turn help us survive, but the human body also needs water to survive as well. I’m sure everyone knows the importance of water and how it keeps us alive, so I don’t need to go into great detail about that. But the amount of water a person drinks significantly affects that person’s health.

Growing up, everyone’s parents told us that we need to drink lots and lots of water if we wanted to be healthy. And even now, doctors and health professionals are constantly advising us to drink more water daily. But why does this help us? If I’m drinking enough water to keep me alive I shouldn’t need more right? Well, this is what most people struggle to understand.

There are many health benefits that occur by drinking as much water as one can during the day. Even drinking just a little bit more water than usual can benefit you, because according to Healthline.com, “Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content”. Why is this so important? Well, the effects that dehydration has on your body are not fun. As Healthline.com also states, “Your brain is strongly influenced by your hydration status. Studies show that even mild dehydration, such as the loss of 1–3% of body weight, can impair many aspects of brain function”. What can happen is that it can impair your mood and concentration; it can also cause you to be more prone to headaches.

Maybe the risks of not drinking enough water won’t convince you to stay hydrated, so let’s talk about how it can improve your way of life. Again, according to Healthline.com, drinking water can help with weight loss. This happens because drinking water improves your metabolism, which increases the number of calories you burn in a day.

Drinking water can also improve your physical performance. If you are an athlete, staying hydrated is very important if you want to stay at the top of your game. When you sweat you lose 6-10% of your water weight which causes serious dehydration, which as we talked about before, isn’t good.

Some other benefits drinking water can have on your body is that it can prevent constipation and even treat kidney stones.

The benefits that drinking water has on your body is endless. So, why not take the extra effort to make sure your getting the proper hydration you need?

‘Don’t Look Up’ movie review

By: Eva Olson

‘Don’t Look Up’ is a comedy/disaster film about a Michigan State grad student, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), who makes a discovery with the help of an astronomy professor, Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio), of a comet that is heading straight towards earth that will hit and destroy the planet in just over six months. They must try and convince the world that this comet is real and that they need to do something about it before they are out of time.

This movie had a lot of hints/references to real life politics. It was frustrating to watch how even when the world was ending there were still fights about politics. A lot of hard topics were present but there was also a good amount of comedy which made it a little easier to watch.

A big theme in this movie was social media and how it was used to spread news and how so many people were sharing their own opinions about the comet which I thought was very realistic. Another big concept in this movie was how people with a lot of power and money act and how they use that.

There were a lot of big names in this movie, almost to the point where it seemed forced, but I think overall they pulled it off well. All of the actors played their characters very well. They were all so different from each other which made it really entertaining to see how they interacted and teamed up to attempt to stop the comet. The antagonists of the movie did a great job getting you frustrated and annoyed with them.

I really enjoyed this movie and thought it was very engaging and compelling. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a movie that will get you thinking. Overall, I would give this movie a 9.5/10 rating. This movie is only available on Netflix.

Worlds most popular sports

By: Mila Hart

Based on where you live, or where you’re from, some sports may be more popular than others. Particular parts of the world care more about specific sports. Here we’ll look at the overall most popular sports in the world.

To be able to determine which sports are most popular I considered: the amount of fan engagement, money in the sport, number and types of players, and overall relevancy.

The fifth most popular sport is tennis. This sport’s popularity is generally consistent around the world with an estimated one billion fans. It is popular in America, Europe, and Asia. Fans tune in to watch tennis matches. There are four major competitions called the Grand Slams. These competitions are watched by over four million fans. A lot of the money in the sport comes from sponsorship deals.

The fourth most popular sports are field hockey and ice hockey. This sport is estimated to have over two billion fans around the world. By including both field and ice hockey, this sport has one of the best global fan bases and audiences. This sport struggles with consistent cash flow however.

The third most popular sport in the world is basketball. This sport is estimated to have nearly two and half billion fans. This sport is trying to grow more internationally but its general popularity still comes from the United States. Because of the NBA, there is a constant flow of cash. The NBA agreed on a TV rights deal worth 24 billion dollars over nine years, and the average salary for an NBA player is over three million dollars.

The second most popular sport may come as a surprise to Americans. Cricket is primarily played in Asia, Australia, and the United Kingdom with an estimated two and a half billion fans. This sport does well in viewership on tv and tv rights deals

The most popular sport in the world is soccer or futbol. This sport dominates nearly every single one of the criteria used for ranking. Soccer has an estimated three and a half billion fans worldwide and is played and followed almost all over the world. Because soccer has so many fans, it brings in more money than any other sport.
